One of my favorite events at Meebo is Hack Day. If you’ve been following our blog for a while then you know what I’m talking about. About once every two months or so, we take a break to work on whatever we want, as long as it’s related to Meebo in some way.
Right before Thanksgiving we had another Meebo Hack Day. Hack Days sure have come a long way. Today I wanted to give you an inside look at how we run our Hack Day.
Hack Day kicks off at 10am on a Thursday and finishes at 4pm on Friday—so folks actually get a little bit more than 24 hours. People are allowed to work in teams, and they often do—it’s also a great way to work with someone you don’t work with under normal circumstances.
To make things a bit more interesting we also have Hack Day awards. Meebo folks can submit their hack day projects for consideration in one of three categories:
At the end of Hack Day, we all get together and present our projects. This past Hack Day, practically everyone participated and we had 17 different projects! There were 5 product hacks, 5 business hacks, and 7 culture hacks. The projects ranged from exploring new ways to share to Adobe AIR to a new fabulous new T-Shirt design to personalized holiday ornaments everyone at Meebo. After presentations we vote for the best hacks in each category. After that, we vote for the best overall hack among the category winners.

Keep an eye on our blog and we’ll let you know when one of these Hack Projects makes it out into a release.
Our next Hack Day is in February. What hack projects would you work on if you were here at Meebo? Maybe you could suggest some ideas for our next Hack Day!
Chris

#1 Saving chat logs (single and the whole lot!)
#2 Firefox addon for linux (Preferably without browser window… and have ads at bottom of convos instead)
i {heart} meebo… it rocks!
December 9th, 2008 at 3:50 am
I’d love to know what all those projects were
December 9th, 2008 at 3:58 am
hello
December 9th, 2008 at 5:01 am
I’d like to see some of the Product hacks you’ve come up with
December 9th, 2008 at 5:45 am
I agree with the being able to save your chat logs
and also how yahoo has a BUZZ where you can get someones immediate attention would be great too
Sincerely,
Raelin
December 9th, 2008 at 5:46 am
I’d certainly love to see a WinMo client
December 9th, 2008 at 6:12 am
I ‘d also like to know what the project were. I would like to see integration in blackboard for online classes. what else could be produced to make class discussions more vibrant. How can I get groups to collaborate more?
December 9th, 2008 at 6:25 am
A way to use Meebo for less cool folks like myself that don’t have an iPhone or BlackBerry… Maybe see if you can have an App in Verizon’s sad little store? They have an IM thing… but it doesn’t do Google Talk or more than one sign-in at once. It bums me out!
December 9th, 2008 at 7:30 am
A couple of things I’d love to see from a daily Meebo user (great distraction at work!)
- Linking screen names. I’m not sure if the new versions of AIM had this but the old versions did and this was useful for signing onto multiple screen names using the same program.
- Application for Blackberry. The current IM applications for Blackberry lag and bog down my Blackberry.
Keep up the great work!
December 9th, 2008 at 7:35 am
That sounds interesting. I wish the company I worked for did things like this. Could you list some of the top hacks?
December 9th, 2008 at 7:41 am
The one hack I’ve been waiting for since it’s inception, would be the ability for users to create their own color schemes for Meebo. All the fancy colored schemes, and all the Pop Culture artist schemes are well and good, but I would like something a little subdued and polished, like silver or grey tone, to make using Meebo at my place of business a little more ‘professional’.
December 9th, 2008 at 7:44 am
iPhone App. Its ridiculous to release an Android App and not a real native iPhone one.
December 9th, 2008 at 7:48 am
Dude. They have a black/professional looking theme already.. unless you’re talking about literally changing the round corners into something sharp and professional.
What I’d really like to see improved (in small note) is the ability to change Yahoo sns on meebo and have it stick. It’ll change it, and if i re-sign in, will revert to whatever it was before (not a problem with MSN or AIM).
And the big hack I’d like to see is meebo on Air so I can download meebo and have it minimize to the tray. That way I won’t get distracted unless I click the little button down there to see my “messages”/conversations. That.. would be awesome!
Ohh! and I know this was discussed before, but facebook chat anyone? I’d love to have that on meebo too. That would be prime! Wish they’d share their info so you guys could do it..

December 9th, 2008 at 9:05 am
1. Facebook chat
2. WebOS Framework so others can create apps to use inside meebo. You already use a web desktop.
3. Ability to add gadgets from google or netvibes on meebo’s desktop.
December 9th, 2008 at 9:15 am
hi how I would love to have meebo with cam.So my family in other places can see me.so we wont be missing each other. that much..thanks

thx for the info since i am new at using meebo it is nice to know that i think it is a really good idea
December 9th, 2008 at 10:08 am
I’m a nerd (nerd) (sad) so I don’t count for the majority of users here, but anyways here’s my personal wishlist for meebo:
* IRC
* make more use of the Jabber protocol (XMPP) features
* merge the native protocol with Jabber since it’s practically the same
* make fileupload work with SSL on browsers which block non-SSL content embedded in SSL pages
* make fileupload fully NoScript-compatible
* (save the text entered into the text box, also when the window is closed)
* (make meebo xhtml-tastic by making it XHTML1.0 and sending it as application/xhtml+xml for non-IE browsers)
Thank you and keep the great work up!
December 9th, 2008 at 10:25 am
I’ve used meebo for quite a while and would like to see:
1) RSS Display – when i’m chatting i like instant updates on various things
2) Phone Directory….i use an AIM client to load phone numbers, so when (not if) i lose my phone i have a backup, any chance we could have a phone directory w/ an export feature?
Love your work!
December 9th, 2008 at 10:29 am
how about a way we could send a message to a phone through way of text messaging from your meebo account.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:30 am
Anything that would make meebo more reliable. It seems to loose connection very frequently when I’m talking to my friends. Any way to make the connection better?
THANKS!
December 9th, 2008 at 10:36 am
The ability to render LaTex in the chat window. This would allow mathematically rich conversations between students, researchers, professors, and the like. This would bring Meebo into the Math/CS academic env. as tool for collaboration.
Thanks.

Another vote for windows mobile ! It would be amazing to have meebo on windows mobile explorer or even opera compatible.
Also re latex, that would be very useful.
Other then that, keep on as you are, its a great site!
December 9th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I would like to especially the times that users tried to send a message during the offline times. Working in a small college library, that would really help me know when the greatest demand might be. Also saving chat logs would be helpful. Love this product!
December 9th, 2008 at 11:10 am

December 9th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Hej, I also would love the Firefox addon for Linux. Please! It always makes me sad to see a new feature come up that I as a Linux user am unable to even try out.
I also would like to have a more custom appearance. If it is to complicated to have each user load up his own, you could set up a competition. Everyone can send in his or her favourite and the whole community is allowed to vote for the ones that should be implemented.
Keep up the great work!
December 9th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Halo I’m christyne and best is ICQ6 bay I live in czech rep. bay
December 9th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Just various applications possible with downloading the official applications without the beta-like glitches. (saving convos, pics, no connection errors) But other than that Meebo is ftw.
December 9th, 2008 at 11:56 am
its a good thing to do .. but this should be transformed into brainstorming sessions so that ideas that come in cud be noted down and cud be utilized to enhance existing work or ideas ..
i think ending the Hack Day with a brainstorming would be the best option. and also rather than people doing things they like … if their is at the start of the Hack day a 2 hr session where people share their ideas .. it would help them to better develop or add new things which they wont have thought before !!
but all in all a good idea .. kudos to Meebo team !

December 9th, 2008 at 12:26 pm
Hi
I use meebo on a regular bases and have even introduced it to my friends that use Msn and Yahoo programs an they love it has they can use it at work in there break times or at home.
But one of the frustating things is not being able to use meebo msn offline, many of my friends are on msn and use there msn in offline mode. They can talke to me offline but i can’t talke to them using meebo in offline mode unless they contacted me first. I can on Yahoo with meebo n leave offline messages 4 them to pick up when they come back online.
And i would love to see more different smily icons with different facial features.
December 9th, 2008 at 12:27 pm

December 9th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
A Blackberry app, the Curve and Pearl are quite popular, but do not handle javascript well so there is no way to use the native browser.
December 9th, 2008 at 1:04 pm
hey this is cool i think what is that sendy thing never mind yeah happy thanks givig right
December 9th, 2008 at 1:34 pm
;D
On your next hack day, I think you should make an emoticon maker, that way the people who use meebo for AIM, and other things, will be able to have their very own emoticons.
Also, I thinnk you should have an icon thing, so we can have pictures in our IM windows.
December 9th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
Hack day sounds soooooooooo stupid! No offense to the people that like it though but it sounds just plain weird!
December 9th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Hello…im hoping someone found a way to stop all these random Meebo black outs…i hate when it says :’meebo is having trouble…blah blah blah’ and then it take sme 10-45 minutes to reconnect fullya nd be able to chat -_-
December 9th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
audio and video support!!! that doesn’t require anything more than flash player (i hate having to install new stuff for every website i use–thanks google). i’d also like the ability to save my audio/video conversations once they’re done.
December 9th, 2008 at 4:28 pm
wow…WOW..WoW…oWo….wOw…im sick off all thes enoobish guests causing trouble in teh chats and IMing you about chatslista nd yoouvill and like myminicity and crap like that…and when people get banned that are guests…they just rejoin instabntlya nd keep spamminga nd ruining the fun

December 9th, 2008 at 7:39 pm
How about a lil sumthing for at&t. a meebo with at&t, but no surcharge or costs to use it at certain times of the day. i would so love tht.
Also, can you make it so we can make our own designs, like stripes, dots, stars, animals or watever and we can add our own color them, like 3 different colors. Is there some way to put up a background with a picture we find on the net? if not, then theres one heck of a thing to do on hack day^^.
Hope you guys are doing fine *waves*
Till then
~M
December 9th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
@Will Robertson
You’re not missing much. The native Android Meebo app is super buggy and constantly disconnects. There’s a reason it’s rated 2.5 out of 5 stars on the Android Market (Android’s AppStore). I’d hope that the Meebo team considers fixing the issues in the half-done Android app before tackling parallel development on an iPhone one. I imagine getting one working perfectly can only aid the robustness of the other.
December 9th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
Can you guys fix the font editing (ex. bold, italics, font colors, etc.) so that if we click blue or bold, not all the text will turn that way? Because sometimes I like to make my sentences multi-colored.
December 9th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

December 9th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Do you folks have to finish the hack project in one day? Do you know if any other businesses do this and if there is a site about such days elsewhere? I’d like to pitch this idea to some of my co-workers in the journalism field.
December 10th, 2008 at 12:56 am
hello,how do you do??????
December 10th, 2008 at 12:59 am

Va multumesc!
December 10th, 2008 at 1:45 am
Twitter support would be cool. Also, an update to the Firefox plug-in that would allow Meebo to be completely contained within a sidebar (as opposed to a sidebar and a tab). That way I wouldn’t have to tab away from the page I’m currently viewing while I’m chatting.
Cheers!

December 10th, 2008 at 6:44 am
i know someones prolly already said it but i realy want meebo 2 make a desktop application with a more stable webcam solution being my meebo webcaming experiance is bad being it never works XD
December 10th, 2008 at 6:47 am
I would love to see a IRC Client for Meedbo. I hate having to jump back and forth between apps just so I can follow my IRC Convo’s as well as my Meebo Convos.
December 10th, 2008 at 6:51 am
I don’t see why Meebo would even NEED an iPhone app as it scales perfectly using Safari, i just saved the page as an Icon on my desktop and it launches perfectly wherever I am. As most of the people I know use some sort of chat client Meebo is the perfect answer for mobile apps. I even discontinued my SMS Service as it was not worth the extra fees.
December 10th, 2008 at 7:06 am
keep working on the g1 app!!
December 10th, 2008 at 8:02 am
Marketing Hack: Send a Meebo Tee to users who refer some number of their friends and bussiness associates to use Meebo. Marketing both ways, direct referrals and placing tees on people who will likely give favorable reviews and provide good information when asked on the street.

December 10th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I like having Meebo be one of my Firefox home pages (along with Gmail), but everytime I load http://www.meebo.com I have to re-click the “Sign On” button – even if I’ve turned on the “Remember Me” checkbox.
Can you “hack” a way for it to automatically log me in to my Meebo account, similar to the way Gmail remembers me and automatically opens my email?
Thanks!
December 10th, 2008 at 9:38 am
By the way, did I mention I love meebo?
December 10th, 2008 at 10:50 am

December 10th, 2008 at 10:54 am
I wanted to know why when someone adds your messenger name and you accept the inviation, why they’re name isn’t added to your meebo list… I accepted them shouldn’t their name be on my meebo list of contacts then just my name on their list?
December 10th, 2008 at 11:27 am

December 10th, 2008 at 11:41 am
I would also like to see some compatibility with course software such as blackboard. It would be cool if we could log into multiple accounts at once. I have a personal meebo account for my webpage, but would like to sign in simultaneously at our library so that I don’t miss anyone who might want to ask me a question via chat. It would be a valuable feature!

i love the sound that
i have not been on meebo for a few days, but used it today and noticed you have added a fetaure so now when i see my contacts i can see there ‘private message’ thing that you have on MSN messenger, and i was just curious, if there would be any chance if you would be able to add a private message box to bebo, as sometimes i write alot on my name, and sometimes tells me its to long, LOL, so was just curiouos if we could have that so we have two spaces to write our messages, if you get me.
thanks, meebo is excellent
December 10th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
sorry, mistake in my last comment, not add it to bebo, i ment meebo obviously LOL

Could you guys work on the colors and bolding?
I really don’t like it all that much when I try to bold one word and my entire sentence turns bold.
It bugs me.
If you could work on it I’d be appreciative!!!!
Thank you!!!

Heya, don’t usually read the meebo blog popups but that sounds really fricken awesome – i’m sure hack thursdays run well into the night.
I’d be delighted to know what all of the hacks were! That kind of thing pays great dividends – employee satisfaction and commitment as well as future directions.
long live (well-managed) tech startups!
December 11th, 2008 at 3:45 am
An Audio / Video control that handles all the camera / mic inputs for a chat window would be nice. Unsure if the protocols that support videoconferencing accept FLV’s or only licensed or even license-free video codecs.
Sound codecs are fairly standardized these days, but would require research as to what each videoconferencing IM applications would support what audio codecs.
I’d like more information as to how the protocols are done, but am unsure as to how to look these IM protocols themselves.
Additionally, the migration to HTML5 will allow Meebo to have the logfiles in the browser’s cache, as local cached databases will be ready to use. Google Gears, Safari, and FF3’s nightly releases are trying to follow HTML5’s changes as they are made, so the browsers will be as current with the HTML5’s current revision.

Hey there! Thanks to all for your comments and hack day suggestions! I wanted to clarify what we mean when we say “Hack Day.” Hack Day is a day in which our employees can work on whatever projects they want. So for example: the previous hack day, a couple of our engineers worked on Meebo for Android as their hack day project. They were really curious about Android and saw it as an opportunity to learn something new and make Meebo available to more users. A working version was made in about 24 hours! Another hack day project was a new Meebo t-shirt design celebrating the launch of Meebo on Android. Want to see it? I’ll ask Andrew to do a blog post. His project won best culture hack. I would tell you more about other projects, but I’d rather you see for yourselves. Keep checking back and we’ll be sure to point out if any new features are a result of Hack Day. Also, keep the suggestions coming – this will make the next hack day even more interesting.

I would say looking to see if you can add Myspace messenger to meebo
December 11th, 2008 at 10:15 am
I’d like someone to A: give chatroom moderators more power (me and my friends connect via jabber clients because it’s the only way to get mod tools that actually work!) B: find a way to kill all the ad-bots running rampant in meebo rooms C: allow chatroom administrators to block guest accounts and/or D: fix meebo on the opera browser.

I would love to know how to hack meebo to disable the automatic blog that pops up everyday.
December 11th, 2008 at 11:17 am
enable meebo users to set up conference chats with other users on different mail clients. For example, my wife uses Yahoo and my friend is on aim, and each can only install that one chat client at their office (meebo is blocked!). I would like to be able to start a three way chat with both of them.

CHAT WINDOWS LAYOUT – GRID, CASCADE, SIDE-BY-SIDE, GROUP, etc
what about a way to group or grid the chat windows…. sometimes it becomes quite messy with multiple windows.

OK, so what was the nett outcome of this hack day? You tell us about it and tease us, but don’t give us the solutions the winners came up with? Stop keeping us in suspenders man!
