Download the new Meebo Notifier
(Currently Windows Only…)
We have a surprise for you.
We know you’re excited (it’s like waiting for the UPS man to drop off a package)… What is it, what is it you ask?!?
We’re proud to announce the release of the Meebo Notifier! (Download it here)
What’s it do? The Meebo Notifier connects you to Meebo and gives you visual notifications for new messages in your Windows taskbar, without having to keep a browser open! (You’ll have to wait a bit longer, Mac folks…)
You can log into Meebo automatically when your computer starts up and—with a single click—open a browser directly to your Meebo session. How awesome is that?
Lots of you have been asking for a notifier for a long time, and we’re really happy to finally give it to you. Try it out and let us know what you think! It’s a small Windows download that will install in only a few seconds.
Want a demo (of course you do)? See one here.
Enjoy!

I have a suggestion for the meebo notifier. I would love to be able to change my status and my status message through the notifier without having to open the browser window. I love meebo and will continue to use it thx for this awesome service.
March 24th, 2009 at 4:19 pm
Awesome!
I hope to see this feature (not having meebo.com open 24/7) in the Firefox extension
My wish is that you can have a stand-alone buddy list (that has all of the features meebo.com does) and you can switch from the desktop to a tab in meebo.com :p
It may be a bit far-fetched, but would be awesome

Not tested the meebo notifier but it seems pretty cool ! I have been using Meebo regularly for several years now and I love it
And now I find out there is even a Frenchman in the team !
Meebo is user-friendly and reliable and I just wanted to say thank you to all the team.

My main attraction to meebo is the fact that I don’t have to install anything in any of the computers I use to access all my IM accounts, so this feature is not as exciting for me.
One feature that I’ve been waiting to finally uninstall the last of the IM Mohicans is the ability to connect to my Skype account. Ok, maybe I won’t uninstall it bc of its video calls. But I’d definitly won’t have to run skype on a daily basis anymore (required for work).
In any event! Still love Meebo. Meebo still rocks! Long live Meebo!

I love this application! I did get it to work in Ubuntu 8.04 using WINE 1.0 . Seems to work flawlessly. I am excited to see the possibility of a fully functional application along with the ability to use the web interface. I have been busy switching my friends over to you guys. Keep up the good work!

March 25th, 2009 at 5:18 am
Are there going to be any future improvements to the Firefox extension? It would be nice to be able to log in to Meebo with the extension w/o having a tab open!
<– anxiously awaiting the Mac & Tux versions…
March 25th, 2009 at 5:39 am
No offense, but you seem to be missing the point of using meebo. The point is that you DON’T have to install a desktop client. There are tons of clients out there that will do everything meebo does and more. (Adium on Mac and Pidgin on *nix are my personal favorites). For me, meebo is a way to connect to messengers when using a shared machine, or a machine where I cannot install programs. I’ll bet 80% of your userbase uses it for the same thing. Spend the coding effort improving the existing service, not duplicating something that’s been done by others for years.
March 25th, 2009 at 5:56 am
Once again, us Mac users, on the wait… But, happy to hear new improvements!

You guys complaining about not wanting anything to install: just dont use it and you’re fine. Its perfect for others that need a very slim solution without admin-rights to install, without 1000 options to configure each time…
Suggestion: zero-install notifier to carry around on my USB-Stick…
Thx meebo-team, great work!
March 25th, 2009 at 6:54 am
This is so cool. Thank you Meebo team.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:43 am
Awesome! Can you guys make it open a https:// connection to meebo?
March 25th, 2009 at 7:49 am
Personally, I love meebo as an im client that can go through any firewalls, primarily, so this is fabulous.
If I can add a feature wishlist, though, auto-detection of away status would make my meebo life complete.
March 25th, 2009 at 7:51 am
I’ve installed it, but I can’t get it to open up a window to meebo.com. It doesn’t work when I click an incoming message or right click the icon and do it that way. Ideas??
March 25th, 2009 at 8:10 am
What I’d like to see is that the notifier opens up a no-frills browser window, rather than the full up window. I’ve been using meebo in a Chrome app window and it’s nice since it allows me a clutter free window for meebo. Maybe a configurable option would be nice.
March 25th, 2009 at 8:29 am
Perfect timing! I was working on an implementation of the Meebo widgets for a website to contact office workers via a website on Monday. They said they liked Meebo and was going to use it, but wished for a way to not have to have the Meebo page up all the time. Next day, BAM, you release exactly what they wanted! Your psychic powers amazing me. Keep up the great work.
Also, the idea of being able to set your status from the notifier should be the next upgrade to it.
March 25th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Yeah, what about Linux? Would love to have that thing, too
March 25th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Nice work! I’d switch from Adium to Meebo with a Mac version of the notifier. Would love to keep my chat history in the cloud and be able to be ’signed in’ from multiple machines without getting duplicated messages.
March 25th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Yes, that is a neat idea. I would love to keep being logged on without having to have the browser open. Firefox still sucks up a lot of memory after a while.
But for me the HTTPS support is critical. I don’t want my IM password fly around naked…
March 25th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Actually, they’re not selling out, they never said they wouldn’t give you anything to install. You are the one who forced that idea into your own heads. On top of that this is a great, small, application that makes it easier to use meebo as your primary messaging “application”, thereby propagating the use of their program further, which is an intended purpose of software, to be the “one you use”.
SIDE NOTE: I would like to see it look for an .ini in the directory it is run from, to store options in (as well as a command line argument allowing it to dump the current preferences to the .ini file) so that the app can be used portably!

Just a quick note about https: even if you connect to meebo using http, meebo opens up an https connection when sending your password over to our servers. So your password is always safe, even when using http.
It’s the same for the Meebo notifier: your password is sent over https as well.
March 25th, 2009 at 10:49 am
Just downloaded now and about to install – looks good on the demo though!
OK, just finished installing – very quick I must say!
Looks very good – polished interface, quick connection as well.
Can’t wait to try it properly!

I thought Meebo was cool before, but now with the Notifier I am practically giddy. I have just a few suggestions, which are probably being worked on, but here they are nonetheless: AFK timer; a way to change status using the notifier; run from flash drive; Ubuntu support.

Wow,
Seriously people, if you do not want to install it, don’t install it.
The main reason that I use it rather than an all in one chat software is that it is not blocked at work.
I would love a desktop version of the software, if only to keep my open program bar clean, as it is, I have one for every person I am chatting with….
Thank you so much Meebo team, you all rock the hardest.

This is great! I use meebo as a Customer Service chat on my website. I installed the notifier and it notified me right away when someone accessed my customer service page, without them needing to initiate the chat. That gives me so many new opportunities to work with.

Don’t know if anyone has made this suggestion yet (don’t want to read all the comments), but the only thing that is stopping me from using it is a simple change: I would love it to no show the incoming message on the screen.
As is, it’s perfect for home, but at work I would like it to not show the message. I have a lot of people looking over my shoulder for code reviews, questions, etc. and wouldn’t want them to see my personal messages.
Other than that, it’s something I been waiting for. Keep up the good work.

Honestly, my addiction to meebo has grown so much that this new feature is very helpful to me. =D
It’s gotten to the point where I haven’t been on the real AIM in…who knows how long?…and I probably have no idea how to use it anymore. =D
I love meebo and the amazing people who run it. They put their users first, which I totally lovelovelove =D
Like the person above me suggested, I think that it would be a good idea to let the user set what notifications show up and which dont. :]
March 30th, 2009 at 11:18 pm
shame that the notifier seems to be blocked by my employer’s firewall. Does it use a different way to connect to the account(s) than the web interface?

The point of the notifier is not to act as a messenger, if you have your browser open it can use quite a bit of memory, and just for meebo it takes a lot more then alternative clients, so the notifier is a way to waylay the need to have a browser open using 3x the amount of the notifier. All in all, it’s a great addition to meebo’s repertoire.
My only suggestion would be the display of the status and the ability to set it to a preset.
April 5th, 2009 at 3:37 am
I come from Germany and i use meebo since 2007 (?!) and I would be happy if it meebo a program would like ICQ or MSN, so for people who take only one of several programs used. (Sorry for my bad englisch, it was the Google Translator

It would be great if we could change the status from the notifier and see our current status.

I have been using Meebo from a long time and have asked my friends to also use meebo. It is one of the best site in my view. Good Work.
Also I wish I had all the features which we get after opening meebo window in browser in the Meebo Notifier. Also I wish I could change my status without using browser.

I have tested the notifier on Linux with WINE, and it DOES in fact work. Running it on the WINE, there’s only one incompatability bug that I see: right click > “open meebo.com” doesn’t work properly. (I just hope the devs don’t take this as an excuse to not make a true native version, creating deja vu.)
@otman
GNU/Linux is not a second-class OS. It just has a small market share, making production of the Windows version a higher priority.
