I’m a night person. When everyone else is turning out the lights, I get excited thinking about the day and what’s going to happen next. However, when I need to fall asleep and my mind is still stirring, I turn to puzzles (books and books of them) to give my mind something to focus on and gradually wind down.
It’s been a while since we’ve posted a JavaScript puzzler and we’re long overdue. For any other JavaScript insomniacs out there, I offer one of my favorite JavaScript puzzles that goes something like this:
Write a function that takes any number of arguments and returns the arguments sorted. For instance, if given myFunction(’dog’, ‘cat’, ‘guinea pig’), the function returns the arguments alphabetized: ‘cat’, ‘dog’, ‘guinea pig.’
Sound easy enough? Now try to do it in one line.
Please don’t spoil the fun by posting your answers here. We’ll post the first response and the names of everyone who got the correct answer at the end of this week. To toss your JavaScript hat into the ring, email puzzlers@meebo-inc.com with your answer.

What version of JavaScript in what version of what browser? For all I know, there’s a function somewhere in some obscure build of Opera 7 which does this in one line.

I think this is a fairly easy task, though don’t hold me to it, since I haven’t actually created it yet. Just pass an array as an argument and a number to a variable (to determine how many values the array is holding). From there, it is only a matter of sorting. This might be done by converting the characters in the values of the array to another format, such as ASCII, Unicode, hexadecimal or even binary. Then use the numbers to determine greater/less than’s, and take it from there.

I started with:
function sortme() { var a=arguments,l=a.length,i,j,t;for(i=0;i<l-1;i++)for(j=i+1;ja[j]){t=a[i];a[i]=a[j];a[j]=t} return a }
Then discovered there is a sort() function (from http://www.w3schools.com/jsref/tryit.asp?filename=tryjsref_sort) and tried:
function sortme() { var a=arguments; return a.sort(); }
but it didn’t work; apparently, the built in variable “arguments” acts like an array but is not. So I tried this:
function sortme() { var l=arguments.length,arr=new Array(l),i;for(i=0;i<l;i++)arr[i]=arguments[i]; return arr.sort(); }
Which works and is pretty short
To test this, create a file called sortme.html with:
function sortme() { var l=arguments.length,arr=new Array(l),i;for(i=0;i<l;i++)arr[i]=arguments[i]; return arr.sort(); }
var x = sortme(’jeff’,’sally’,'brenda’,'adam’);
for (var y=0; y<x.length; y++) alert(x[y]);

I’m an night and day person, usually sleep only about 4 or 5 hours a night 1 – 6.
I can not for the life of me figure out though why would you want to do this function in one line. I mean you can, but unless I am missing something, the transformation of turning the object into a array requires a for loop. Once you have that, it’s just a poorly formatted line of code putting what should be two lines in one…
Just my thoughts, and what now sounds like trolling.

Simply put, recursion is when a function calls itself. That is, in the course of the function definition there is a call to that very same function. At first this may seem like a never ending loop, or like a dog chasing its tail. It can never catch it. So too it seems our method will never finish. This might be true is some cases, but in practise we can check to see if a certain condition is true and in that case exit (return from) our method. The case in which we end our recursion is called a base case…

Sorry for my ignorance …. but I have no idea what you are talking about ?? I am Canadian and the last time I heard … we were not considered stupid ? Maybe when you cannot sleep you could explain the process and any rules etc … for us Canadians ?
