When we first thought of the meebo me widget idea, we thought it was pretty neat. When it actually launched, we were really excited that people were actually using it! Scouring the web, everybody on the team grabs another team member and happily points at a site where the widget is embedded. (We still do that now and have been taking screenshots to commemorate the occasion…)
Requests are pouring in for new features, like customizing the look and feel (color schemes, themes, etc), having an alias, changing the shape and size, etc. People have put it on blogs, social networking sites, and even news stories! The nice folks at Wordpress.com have even worked with us to make it really easy for their bloggers to embed the widget!
It’s our biggest release since launch, and just like then, the goal was to make IM communication even easier and we hope that we’ve accomplished that at least a bit for many of you out there.
Back at the shop, we’re trying to optimize the service so that it remains smooth. Prior to release we did a lot of testing but as always, things are always different when put into live practice. Some of you may notice network hiccups with the widget; we’re working on getting the server side more robust. The new interface inside meebo is also up for improvement — many of you have sent in suggestions via email and the forum — keep ‘em coming.
Stay tuned for further improvements, more exciting stuff on the way…
cheers,
sandy

http://www.meebo.com is really awesome, spectacular and most importantly USEFUL. it has proved to be one of the milestone towards reaching the goal of Web2.0 i.e. ‘all the services under one hood ( the browser)’
thats cool. keep it up. hey by the way when will meebo change from alpha to beta hmmm…
August 4th, 2006 at 11:12 am
love using meebo and the widget for my blog makes blogging that much more fun! thanks for the cool invention!
August 4th, 2006 at 11:32 am
it’ll be even better if you release a full software app which can be run out of browsers as well.so ppl can just sign in to these and IM.u guys have done a great job of integrating different IMs thru browsers and now thru blogs.its the natural next step.
August 4th, 2006 at 11:51 am
yYOU GUYS ARE GENIOUSES =D KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK..
August 4th, 2006 at 11:58 am
I love the fact that it saves your username even when you leave the page, that way, visitors don’t have to constantly change their name.
This is the most amazing feature of any service I’ve ever seen… ever
It’s brought me back to meebo again, by allowing me to chat with people who don’t have screen names on any of the popular protocols or where they can’t login as usual.
You all are amazing!
August 4th, 2006 at 3:42 pm
now my relatives who don’t really know anything about downloading or installing software (or even signing up on meebo.com) can chat w/ me just by visiting my blog!
this feature surpasses any expectation i had had for you meeboers. keep it up!

I’m going ahead and removing Meemo from my websites. I attempted to file a fairly serious bug report with their team today and it was met with some rather insulting comments from their unoffical support staff. I can not support a product or company that does such a thing and I’m going to encourage others to do so likewise.
I can not support such a product that goes on about how they want and encourage community support but hold such report in so little regard.
Thank you for your time,
-drmike

Hey drmike – thanks for bringing this to our attention. AJ, our Community lead, just got to your forum thread and has responded. I’m very sorry that you had a negative experience in the forums and hope we can make it up to you! Here’s AJ’s response:
AJ
Meebo Team
First and foremost, drmike, thank you for pointing out this problem when highlighting a search term. It’s ironic that the very term you’re looking for would disappear when highlighted! We’ll take a look at our phpBB style settings and update accordingly.
From the day meebo first launched, feedback from our users has been of utmost importance. Indeed, it’s the most-requested features that we develop and implement. Bug reports submitted on the forum and over email are logged and fixed. We are always listening, through the forums and through our comments@meebo.com email address, to what users like and dislike about meebo. We never, ever, deliberately ignore suggestions and I’m sorry you felt your feedback was not being heard.
The forum itself is meant as an open place to ask questions, report bugs, request new features, etc. Forum visitors are often able to help each other out (as well as the meebo team!) by providing advice and tips and general help to each other. echo_valley has helped many people here, but it seems this thread has gotten a bit out of hand.
I’m also sorry to hear that this experience has caused you to remove meebo from your site. While it is obviously up to you, I hope that this one experience has not irreparably tainted your view of meebo. As stated before, the meebo team is very open to its users’ suggestions and feedback. We believe it this very openness of the team is one of the most important aspects that set us apart from our competitors.
Again, very sorry for the forum experience. Please do know that we all work *very* hard to take all feedback into account…it’s what has built meebo to this point!

You guys were already pretty awesome, but now you’ve really risen over expectations. The “product” is fantastic and constantly improving and becoming more valuable. Great job and congratulations.

August 4th, 2006 at 7:52 pm
So sad to hear of the negative experience. I hope someone sent him an E-Mail, because if his oerception of meebo was tainted, he wouldn’t visit the blog again. I know I wouldn’t…
August 4th, 2006 at 9:20 pm
Cool. I just signed up. So why do people create companies to make such nice things for us that we don’t have to pay for?
Any economics professors out there who can enlighten me, an humble blogger?
August 4th, 2006 at 9:29 pm
As far as I’m concerned drmike is a wuss and he can shove it for all we care. I read his post and talk about being a big baby. Shame too because meebome is the best software around. I have it on my website just because I want to show my support for meebo. I use meebo everyday and always have it running in Firefox. You guys know what you are doing so keep up the top notch work. You got big fans here on the east side of the US!
August 4th, 2006 at 11:09 pm
And to think… This all grown exclusivly from word of mouth…
August 4th, 2006 at 11:35 pm
This software is wonderful. Interface is great in both term internationalization and usability. No installation, Use it everywhere!!! I love it.
Some more features I want to have such as Buzz, show friendly name instead of nick name like IM.
Hope meebome the more and more improved.
August 4th, 2006 at 11:38 pm
One more thing, somebody who has MySpace, tell Carson Daly about this. I would LOVE to speak with him personally, but I’m too lazy to make a MySpace account. Truthally I don’t want one.
Here’s his website:
http://www.myspace.com/carson_daly
Also, for anybody else with a myspace on television, this would be a lovely little niche item for them as well.
August 5th, 2006 at 2:20 am
I really enjoyed the idea of meebo me, yet I think is necessary a bottom or something smaller indicating if the website owner is on-line or not, and that open the main chat screen when the user click.
In my website has not enough space to keep the meebo screen opened.
August 5th, 2006 at 5:16 am
And for those who do not wish to use the WordPress Widget plugin or don’t have a theme that supports the same, you can use the meebo me plugin to add the chat widget anywhere in your theme using a simple function.
August 5th, 2006 at 6:26 am
Excellent work, guys! I hope next time, the widget allows you to log in through the widget itself or if you log into your blog, you also log into meebo. That would be awesome.
August 5th, 2006 at 7:06 am
I have always used Meebo, and I love your service. The widget is really awsome I have it on my site (www.gamersunited.net please sign up I had to redo the forums and lost all my members)
August 5th, 2006 at 8:29 am
You should make it so people can put up away messages it would be way easier to do that then to log off then back on.
August 5th, 2006 at 10:00 am
The Meebo Me Widget is a great idea. However, I would love to have a full Meebo Client as a Yahoo! Widget that runs on my desktop. It would be great to be able to sign into my Meebo account from a Widget right on my destop. I love Meebo but don’t like having to open my browser all the time.
August 5th, 2006 at 1:43 pm
yea i think u guys suck. Even Urvi sucks so i felt lik eusing her e-mail thank her very much for that!
August 5th, 2006 at 5:01 pm
Love the ideas you guys are coming up with .. especially teaming up with wordpress for the widget idea
shows how open source is working together in an agile manner to bring the best to the users. Tried it on my blog and it works like a charm
. Have a suggestion and maybe this is asking too much .. but how about bring the power of right click to the main meebo window. E.g. you could have logout , change status , account settings etc. Just wondering is there somewhere you have documented your design or the ajax approach you are using ? ( though view source should do the trick
Anyways, absolutely fantastic work .. keep going ..
August 5th, 2006 at 6:40 pm
i love meebo me but could the wizard generate valid xhtml? that would be great. keep up the good work.
August 5th, 2006 at 6:55 pm
I really wish this feature could work with my xanga blog.
(It’s doesn’t unless one has to have Xanga Premium, which I’m not paying (and will not pay) for)

Except that Meebo never shows me online when I am. What gives
August 5th, 2006 at 10:34 pm
Hello! I love meebo widget for the wordpress. And it wasn’t even that complicated to add the widget! =) I’ve been using meebo since around December of last year (I think)–and yes, I learned about it by word of mouth. I definitely recommended it to my officemates then who, like me, had troubles with YM in our offices (our YMs kept on signing us out at the most inopportune moments that it pisses us off).
I have a question re meebo widget and a suggestion for meebo.com. Question: How can I change the name of the widget for my blog? I used “IM ninjaturtlegirl” but when I viewed my site, it only read “IM ninjaturtlegir”–yep, it’s missing the letter “l”. *pouts* You can check how it looked as I provided the URL to my site at the Website box. Hope you guys would address my question! =)
As for the suggestion… I’m using meebo.com to access my Yahoo account–most often to communicate with clients. Sometimes, I would need to archive my conversations (for paper-trailing purposes) but meebo doesn’t archive the convos. Could you add an archive option thing? Or is it something that I’ve missed already?
More power again to you guys! Meebo, by the way, is such a cute name. I think I’ve read on your blog about how you’ve come to the name.. but I forgot it already. Heh. Cheers! ~mitch (female here, by the way. I’m just guessing that since you guys are from the US, most of you don’t use “mitch” to call girls) =) Sorry for the segue. =P
August 5th, 2006 at 11:26 pm
i tried meebo me and realised that it’s not what i need. it’s cool that ppl can talk to you, but wouldn’t it be a cool option to let ppl chat between them on your website? still searching for that..
August 6th, 2006 at 1:39 am
One Doubt!
I copied the code to my page, and now I can adjust the Width & Height of the widget by simply altering the width, height attributes inside the code itself. It can be any size, and the widget is adjusting without troubles. Then why you put 3 sizes and ask the users to select anyone. You may provide the code, and can specify, one can change the size by altering the attributes inside the code. Right? Then, what’s the problem?

August 6th, 2006 at 10:04 pm
Love the thigns u guys are coming up with, its sooo great to have a fully universal chat portal to chat with all of my friends without having to download anything.. i love it, but i think you guys really should make it so the meebome thing allows users that view your page to chat with eachother, and have the ability from the main meebo window to see what was said in your meebome room.. that would be pretty cool, so u can see if someone is trash talkin to one of their friends thru your page.. lol.. anyways, that would be awesome, and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!
