After lots of users started adopting our little widget, one of the first comments was “can I customize it?” The answer is now yes.
We’ve just released our second push of the meebo me widget and after going through a fancy makeover, we allow you to create widgets of all colors and sizes! Also since we now know all sorts of ways people are embedding meebo me, we’ve added the ability to change the title and your display username on the widget. This way you won’t have to reveal your meebo username and can happily be “Snoopy” on your myspace meebo embed and “Woodstock” on your xanga meebo embed. Either visit meebome.com or check out the “Modify” button on the widget pane in your mymeebo dialog…
Our first release of the widget was much like the first release of meebo.com — it rides on the principle of letting the users guide feature development. We’re ecstatic that so many of you like being involved in the process. One of the requests we’ve gotten is to integrate search into the meebo experience so that you can quickly search on topics you’re chatting about. Search is a neat feature and it has the added bonus of being revenue generating; so per your request, we’re trying it out!
Some of you may have noticed a search bar either on the top of the page, the bottom, in the buddylist, or an in-context selection popup menu. We’ve sprinkled the different search types across our servers and are tracking which ones people like, dislike, use, don’t use, or ignore altogether. So give search a try and let us know what you think! In the next few weeks we’ll be compiling our results and figuring out how we want to ultimately put search into meebo, hope you guys can help us out.
We’ll definitely let you know how it all turns out.
Also, we’ll announce the meebo me contest winners soon, so stay tuned!
cheers,
sandy

Updated version is Cooooool…Ability to define colors and customize themes, very useful.
But some more suggestions.
• Change Font, Font size etc. of Title, Display Name & Chat Text.
• Ability to upload a small thumbnail as Avatar.

Mine is located at the buddy list. I like it where it is =)

Hello!
I saw your newest blog, and the part about the integrated search option! You requested comments from users…
I personally dont like search on my screen. It distracts me. Not to mention that it opens a NEW WINDOW and I use tabs.
I have search in my mozilla window. I would like to have an option of not seeing it there.
[Ive also put similar topic on the forum as soon as I saw search function]
I really dont like it.
And another thing. Can I turn off blog somehow? Yes – I think its a good idea to see whats new about meebo, but in some other, shorter form.
Hope I helped with my opinion.

Guess what, I have added that new feature to my blog
Looks cool!
September 8th, 2006 at 1:52 am
I have the search at the top part of the screen, and I kinda like it. It’s collapsable (a MUST) and not distracting. I don’t see myself getting much, if any, use out of it because I’m far too used to using the search at the top right of my Firefox. But, it could be really helpful for those using IE or somethin’. Just my $0.02.
September 8th, 2006 at 2:24 am
Wow to all the new features added every week, cool!
First had the search bar at the bottom, all right, but the buddy list placement is certainly the neatest way to go
-not that i’ll use it much (firefox rocks!) but for those still at the dark side…
September 8th, 2006 at 2:41 am
I like the new customized design idea..
Also I been on meebo when I get disconnected and come back to see your little Search integration testing going on. I like what you had on it so far. the Google, Yahoo, and Wikiepedia search choices. I also recommend you add http://www.goodsearch.com, and http://www.goodtree.com. So Not only while they are surfing, they can also donate to charities while searching…
September 8th, 2006 at 3:32 am
the search is unnecessary and bothersome. it adds un-needed clutter to the meebo simplicity and makes yet another thing the page has to load and animate. plus if your using meebo youre by default already using software capable of searching the web and even easier so if your browser happens to support a search box built in. i understand the revenue benefits of including the search but feel it should be much more inconspicuous and even turn-offable(as well as the blog window that pops up every time much like the aim today window that use to pop up when i used aim). in anycase meebo is a great service and is definatly top of its class, and im not trying to stiffel progress, just make the program more customizable. after all having a meebo account doesnt exactly have all that many perks as it stands.
September 8th, 2006 at 3:40 am
I kinda agree with Greg : Most of us already have a search bar in their browsers, so we don’t need to have another one in meebo. It just results in having twice the same search bar in your browser window !
BUT it is true that this search function can help financing meebo, so if the benefits are significant, then it’s cool.
As far as where it should be, I much prefer it at the bottom of the contact list, like MSN and ICQ.
Anyway, keep up the good work guys, you rock ^^
September 8th, 2006 at 4:28 am
I find the use of cheers very unsettling. Its like a faux european thing. Look at me, I’m worldly, I use a word that mostly european people use… I use it cause I’m soooo different and waaay more cultured than you.

would be nice to move the google search bar to anywhere in meebo page, not only dissappear!!! well, my meebome looks like doesn’t work (http://freakyfingers.hi5.com). Im using IE 6. Looks like it only work with Firefox (i saw the widget on my home pc.)…
try this searching “topic”: Venezuela (plz, dont click on political links, that is boring)

http://www.meebome.com/?id=ZGQcJzMVSP&cbu=http%3A%2F%2Fwww15.meebo.com%2Fmodify.html
How can I modify my widget? I think a lot of ppl are modifying their own widgets and the website is full..
September 8th, 2006 at 6:30 am
What would make the meebo widget usefull is if it was slightly intelligent. How about a combined google/meebo logs/meebo contacts search, which extends itself into the browser window. Opening into a new window is just plain annoying in every way. Open it into a tab, like the blog does, at the very least.
I still need a way to find out if the owner of a meebome widget is online from a php script. How about guest.meebome.com/online?121212121212, the number being the id of the widget?

Loving it ^^;;
Just to let you know, asking people to “a few dollars or cents to your revenue pot” is against the AdSense TOS. I guess you’re a premium account though, so I’m not sure of your TOS, but on a normal account it is. Google might moan at you for saying that ^^;;
September 8th, 2006 at 7:46 am
meebo is amazing! its versitility has been great in the office and it’s wonderful to see how much it improves week by week. you guys keep making it better when i can’t even think of ways to make it better =)
September 8th, 2006 at 7:52 am
I personally don’t want a search thing in Meebo.
I like the clean single-purpose Meebo.
I understand your need for some revenue, so I have to stop short of asking you remove the feature.
Although the search gadget is not enough of a turn-off to drive me away from Meebo, it is certainly one step in that direction.
I suggest you provide a user-preference option to turn it on or off. You might get a better idea of how many users actually want it by tracking how many people actualy turn it on.
Further, I would approve of it being “on” by default, so that new users have a chance to see it and try it out. Those who dislike it enough, will be motivated to find the “off” setting in the preferences.
Regarding MeeboMe, I have one on my (low-traffic) blog, and I like it. I will probably customize sometime also.
Lastly, MEEBO ROCKS. Keep up the great work, and I am a grateful user and avid promoter.

Nice Work
I wonder why you did not offer a pop-up version of meebome.
Most CMS are not based on complete asynchron modules yet.
Therefore must be many people having problems with reconnecting
trials on each page change (refresh) of the website.
September 8th, 2006 at 8:23 am
Don’t really like the Google search. It just adds overhead to a site that’s already pretty clean. Also, I already have a google search box on my main homepage, along with a stack of other searches that I use regularly. So for me, it’s redundant.
But keep up the work on Meebo, I like the colour customizing and am waiting patiently for the ability to group contacts into “meta-contacts” like in Gaim and others.
September 8th, 2006 at 8:38 am
Is there anyway to send files like pictures?
September 8th, 2006 at 8:51 am
re: the widget customizations
Once again, very cool. The first comment to this post also has some good suggestions, but I’m guessing you’re already working on those. Keep up the fantastic work.
September 8th, 2006 at 9:19 am
I like the search bar. If there is any possibility to add a wikipedia search as well as a way to concatonate all searches into mindmaps it would help me out a lot. It might also be cool to have an “embed hotlink” button (like smileys which we could turn into Wiki Like entries in our own personal info) Hell while we are brainstorming, it would be cool to add publish functionality to those as well although you can set it up to maintain world viewable, friend viewable, or self viewable info extending the meebo me widget into a “MeeboMind” Widget.

Just something about changes in general: I didn’t know about the search bar until I closed and reopened Meebo today, and then it appeared at the bottom of my contact list. Because of the nature of the web application, people don’t get to see changes until they reload the whole page. I believe there might be a large number of users like me who just ALWAYS have Meebo open, so I basically never close it unless I have to (reboot etc.). What I would like to see is some kind of notification, let’s say a pop-up that says “A newer version of Meebo is available, please reload the page and login again to see our new and exciting features”.
Just something to think about!
This is now the third time or so that I read about some feature in the blog, and then I’m thinking hey how come I don’t see that, so I reload the page and voila, there is it.
September 8th, 2006 at 10:39 am
Possible glitch, or not, I dunno – I implemented a new widget today with colors that match the website, and a fake name for the interface. I’m being told that it keeps saying it’s trying to check the status of the fake name, even though I’m chatting with the person through it. And the widget isn’t showing up on my friends list, even though someone is chatting with me through it. Is this user error, or something that needs tweaking?
September 8th, 2006 at 10:39 am
you should make CLUSTY your default search engine. i hate google.
September 8th, 2006 at 10:41 am
Follow-up, just after I posted the above comment, the user chatting with me refreshed her screen, and the issue resolved itself. Interesting!
September 8th, 2006 at 11:02 am
SO, I have a question.. I just found the my meebo.. btw it’s very cool!
My question is this…if I add a new widget with a differenet name.. and put it on one of my other websites.. then wil it whos me , when a user vistis that site. which site it camme from? ie. if I use barbsorensen at y http://www.b arbsorensen.com and use Barbsmyspace at http://www.myspace.com/barbsorensen, then when the guest visit each site will I be able to see which site they are coming from?
Will experiement with it either way but not sure what time guests show up so thought I”d get a jump on this. by asking here
thanks
regards
Barb

Dear Meebo Staff… I trust you’re not getting revenue from Google searches and ads. If so, asking people to perform searches in order for you to “add a few dollars and cents to meebo’s revenue pot” is a violation of Google’s TOS. Pretty standard for any online advertising.

September 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pm
and the new widget customization is fantastic. now they match my site layouts!
September 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pm
could you add an optional notification to the widgets that plays a sound or something when someone’s visiting the page? I would like to be able to send a message to the person, and I never notice when someone’s on there unless they type a message to me.
September 8th, 2006 at 12:20 pm
I’d still like to see the bar flash a different color like Gmail’s integrated chat. You are changing the text, and blinking that with js, but why not change the color? I’m thinking about moving away from Meebo because the desktop integration for notifications is not as strong as other clients. If not a pop-up alert (because that would be very tough with current JS), then please change the color. Google is already doing this and I’m sure Meebo web devs are technically competent. Thanks.
September 8th, 2006 at 1:03 pm
I like the direction you’re going in with the customizable colors, would like to be able to change the font … and the color of the “status checking message” … orange, blech, in my world, which is pink
LOVE the search thingy … want the ability to add other search engines, namely the custom one we made for our own library catalog, like we can on Mozilla. Mine showed up at the top center to begin with, which is where I noticed it and LIKED it, exactly for the IE use, but also ’cause firefox on one of my machines got buggy and I can’t get my search engines back … grr to mozilla. I liked the collapsible feature, too.
September 8th, 2006 at 1:31 pm
This is an answer to Barb’s question about multiple widgets:
If you name them two different things on different pages, the name of each will show up as two different Groups on your buddy list, so you will see who is on what page by which Group they show up as a guest under…
Hope that helps!
September 8th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
Meebo Team,
Thanks alot, guys! The new customizations make the widget much easier to see and use on a white background, such as our page. Plus it’s just cool…
As for the search, every webpage should have it.
Great Job!

September 8th, 2006 at 1:41 pm
Wow, great job on the graphic update. The dark theme could use a minor tweaking so that the writing and the sound icon are easier to see though.
Keep up the good work!

Great the new feature to customize color.
Suugestion : Could you propose an option to notify when somebody is visiting the page ?
Thanks a lot !

I like the new search option.
I use it all the time with FF and this just saves me time from moving the mouse across the screen.
Mine is at the top of the meebo page, i like it there.
I think if it were in the buddy list, i wouldn’t use it as much. I think the buddy list should just be kept as simple as possible, one major reason to use meebo instead of all the programs as idividuals.

September 8th, 2006 at 3:08 pm
The search box that I have fills the box in with “search the web” – when I drag the text “MEEBO” into it, the text lands in the middle of the “search the web” text so I end up with “Search the weMEEBOb” – I’m sure you’ll work that out on a future release though.
I’m glad to see Meebo adding a (potential) revenue stream.
Oh – also – What about a Dictionary lookup?
September 8th, 2006 at 3:44 pm
If you want to try the search bar in different spots:
Top:
www2.meebo.com (also 6, 10, 14…)
Bottom:
www3.meebo.com (also 7, etc.)
Integrated (just highlight the text):
www4.meebo.com
Buddy list:
http://www.5.meebo.com
Personally, I like the integrated feature, plus maybe a top or bottom. Don’t mess with my buddies!
I finally installed MeeboMe today, and I have only one feature request. Let us define the “guest” name like you let us define our alias. I’m fine with seeing “meeboguest28843,” but it would be more elegant for my site visitor to see “p&l guest” or “Patrick’s friend” or “me.”
September 8th, 2006 at 3:44 pm
woops… above should be http://www5.meebo.com
September 8th, 2006 at 4:01 pm
Hi,
First of all i love meebo, my pops introduced me to it as a way for me to connect to all my accounts at work without intstalling 5 different IM clients just to stay in touch. (I’m from the sf bay but live in Australia now).
Constructive Criticism:
The search is useless. Plain and simple. If it gave my results in the same window so i could chat and look at the results at the same time then MAYBE. but as it is now, popping up a new window does nothing for me as i already have the facility to search in my web browser. If it must exist in its present form, then mine is probably in the best place (absolute bottom-center of the screen, and as a bonus i can hide it — although it should probably be hidden by default).
Keep up the good work,
Jonah
September 8th, 2006 at 5:15 pm
Thanks for rolling this release out, guys. However, me having one of those black background pages, the widget doesn’t look 100% perfect – yet. One the one hand, there is some bright coloured lines in the widget title which I can’t get rid of, and on the other, the status speech bubble is not properly masked, i.e. there is some bright border (which doesn’t hurt when it’s on a bright background, but you can clearly see it on a black one…)
If you want to see for yourself, have a look at my homepage => contact.
But thanks for working on this, I really appreaciate your hard work!
Best regards,
Florian

the search is neat though i think you should add bingo into it.
September 8th, 2006 at 6:45 pm
No need to integrate search, in my opinion. In Firefox , Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer 7, we (will) have deicated browser search boxes. Plus in google i have shortcuts, like typing “g (terms)” — by default “google (terms)” in the address bar. But for the lusers on Internet Explorer 6-, it might be handy.
September 8th, 2006 at 6:54 pm
I totally agree with Alan.
Anyways, another two humble suggestions — could you make the widgets border colour adjustable aswell? And, how can I switch the language of the widget? My website runs in three different languages, it would be great if I could specify the widget language on the fly, that is with the HTML code (not the widget config), i.e. have a …&lang=de for instance…
That would be really handy, thank you!
Other than that, again, great work! Awesome idea, I have never seen anything like it before. And such great innovative ideas seem to get fewer and fewer these days on the web…

I managed in customizing the size, not the color or the name. When I press “Done” the code to be copied remains the same as before (only size is changed) and the color of the widget does not change.

i usually use https://www.meebo.com (the ssl one)
so when ever i search using the new search bar – i get a bugging security warning stating that “though the page u gview is encrypted, the info ur transmitting is unencrypted and could be read by 3rd party, u still want to continue sending it – ok,cancel”
can u guys by some means avoid this pop up for every search
September 9th, 2006 at 12:26 pm
I use Firefox on Windows XP Pro. Meebo is amazing on my system. Now I can change the names and colors of my meebome widgets, brilliant! The search feature is nice too, Thanks for putting it at the top.
Have you thought of creating a Yahoo Widget Client version? Those Yahoo widgets are just JavaScript and XML anyway. I have my Yahoo Widget engine set to start with my computer. Having a client widget that would pop up and sign me into Meebo automaticlly would rock.
Other suggestions; being able to customize the client background color or use an image. Oh and being able to use my own .wav or .mp3 files for the send and recieve sounds.
Meebo is the best so keep pushing forward!
Later,
Douglas.

Off topic: Sometimes, my internet connection goes whack and I loose my Meebo connection. When that happens I need to reload the webpage and fill in my account information again. I used to be able to reconnect, but now it seems to have disappeared. And yes, I would love an auto-reconnect function, with indication of when it will try to reconnect again… and even give me the power to reconnect.

very good idea to let us customize our meebo widgets!!
we have just two things that are problems for us (the third is our american language):

Heres my big tip of the day. When someone signs in as a guest… have a big button that says “Sign up now and manage all of your accounts under one loigin.” or something like this. It’s so hard to find the sign up button and I honestly believe your user signups would skyrocket! Not to mention user loyalty & more…
