I roller-skate. I’ve been skating and competing for 23 years and most days I think I actually skate better than I walk (I trip all the time!). When I tell people that I roller-skate, the most common reaction I get is “like, roller derby?” “No! I’m not tough enough for that,” I tell them.
It’s like ice-skating, but on wheels.
I’m not sure what drives me to skate, but there’s just something about putting my skates on and getting lost in my figures that I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of. It’s so meditative at times. Unfortunately I’ve never been able to pursue the “Olympic dream” since roller-skating has never been an Olympic sport. But I have been able to do a lot of cool things in the sport. I got to train at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. I have traveled all over the continental US to compete. And I managed to get three national medals and one national title.

Looking back on the last 23 years, I never thought that my Saturday morning ritual of going to the STAR classes at my local roller rink with my mom would have turned into the journey it has become. This very well may be my last competitive year in the sport, so I’m more determined than ever to make it my best. Fingers crossed for one more National title!
If you have never roller-skated before, or if it’s just been a while, you should go to your local rink this weekend. You’ll have a blast, I promise!

You can get more info at:

Is this post somehow related to Meebo ? I don’t see any relation … so please, put those stuff in your personal blog, not here. I’m not interested in reading someones personal blog posts on Meebo blog or any blog for Internet services/sites/communities.
Btw, post is excellent and i’m glad about you, but this is wrong place to post.

I understand your passion for quad skating. I’ve been skating for 30 years and it’s amazing to me every time I hit the floor how my body remembers all those moves developed since I started skating at around 12. I’ve never competed as my style has been more ‘urban’ – think 70s funk type skating. With my daughters (10+11) I have passed on the passion and we skate together ever weekend and it’s great to see that they too have become some of the best skaters in the rink. Its terrific exercise and a family night activity for us and we love it. Thanks for bringing this terrific sport to light! SR

November 5th, 2009 at 5:40 am
I read about doing the sport what you really like! I am not a skater – I am a athelete and I swim ( not the sports medal kind ,by the way… ) and play some football. The new age schedules – I don’t know but have not been able to do anything in the past year
It feels soon I would have the belly which can be used as a punching bag
guess it will sure stop a bullet! Went to a doctor – says you are perfect – i am so grossly out of shape
November 5th, 2009 at 5:47 am
Brittany, my daughter and I have enjoyed roller skating just for fun together. Sadly, here in New England, many roller rinks have closed. I hope we can get something restarted in Massachusetts. I miss skating a lot. Good luck with your National title we Meebo users are rooting for ya! Margaret

November 5th, 2009 at 6:07 am
Aw, I used to do figures and dance way way back in the day – used to spend more time at the roller rink than I did at home! Now my skates only get dusted off to take my kiddos skating for school parties. I miss it – don’t stop!!
November 5th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Hey Brittony,
I’ve skated my whole life and identify with you completely. I started on quads and branched out to inlines and now am competing internationally in Freestyle Slalom. I am so grateful for the life my skates have given me.

November 5th, 2009 at 6:47 am
Between your article and the comments … wow, I had no idea roller skating is thriving so well these days! This really opened my eyes. Roller skating to me is something I did back when I was in grade school in the 80s. We’d have roller skating parties with our class. I will never forget those days; that is truly among my happiest childhood memories. There was nothing better than zipping along the wooden floor with the disco lights flashing and those hits from the 80s that I love so much blaring overhead. I remember taking lessons, but I never stuck with them. Now, I’m wishing I had so I could count myself among the very cool professionals here.

I’m 27 and been skating since I was 2. I can relate completely! Growing up it helped keep me out of trouble. I was such a common face at my local rink, they hired me the day I turned 16…coolest first job ever!…Someone paid me to do what I loved – Skate! I was on a speed team (only because I’m a uni-turner when it comes to circles) so fast is how I love to go and JAM-Skating is my other thrill!…some of my life long friends where made at a skating rink…happiest injuries I’ve ever had have happened at a rink!…I’m soo happy to see someone else has fond memories like I do!
November 5th, 2009 at 7:37 am
i love skaters and u are hot
November 5th, 2009 at 8:32 am
That is awesome! My mom used to be a roller skater from about 8 to her early twenties….she also competed and was one of the best in her league. She went pro and was teaching around the time she met my father. I’ve never seen anyone else that did it. It’s cool to see that the sport is still going on today.
November 5th, 2009 at 8:36 am

As a 41 year old life long Roller Skater (NOT ROLLERBLADES!) I can only tell you to never stop going even if you stop competing. I have had a love for skating as long as I can remember, hockey, jam skating and a little freestyle in my day. The skates I use today are about 7 years older than you are.
I still go every couple of weeks to a Sunday, adult night here in Phoenix and of all of my past girlfriends the roller figure skaters were my favorite. Good luck – Keep Skating!
November 5th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Growing up there were 2 roller skating rinks near where I lived. My mom used to take me skating every weekend. It was the best times ever. A few years ago I heard about a roller skating rink about 45 min away and I started going. Before long I joined a roller skating league and it was awesome!!! I also have been figure skating since I was 4, so I understand the urge to skate and how it makes you feel. I think that its great that you have this incredible love for roller skating and have gotten medals and traveled the country just for doing something that you love to do!!! Good luck and I hope this year is your best ever!!
November 5th, 2009 at 11:09 am

i’ve never skate but i think that it is a good activity and if yu love it yu must continue it ok girl trust in your self ,all the best
November 5th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
I’ve been rollerblading for about 13 years now, I wish i had kept up with it, I’d be as smooth as that makes me sound, but I’m still very awkward and don’t have the mastery I once did. I still love the feeling and go whenever I can. I’m especially happy that I found someone special recently that likes to do it , too. Keep it up, this sport is not popular enough in the states even though there are acres of parking lots and sidewalks just begging for some urethane rain. I’m trying to get some people together to do an informal skate at UCF on Saturday nights, so anyone from the 407/321 area codes interested should send me an email.

You honestly are my role model at this point in time. In my area, many people distain the sport of rollerskating, and mock me for that love. When I read of stories such as yours. By the way, I’m 15 and I’ve been rollerskating for 5 years and still going strong. I hope that someday I can be as good a rollerskater as you and I will strive to achieve that goal.

you are DEFINITELY tough enough for roller derby!!!! You should go check out your local league! You’d be surprised at how much your experience would make you an AMAZING derby skater! Some of the best players were figure skaters first!
Go check it out!!

November 6th, 2009 at 8:03 am
I know what you mean about figures, it’s an amazing way to calm yourself and hone your concentration. As for stopping as a competitor you shouldn’t have to. I didn’t start figure skating until I was 33 and competed many times in adult competitions. Good luck with this year’s nationals and hope you get a chance to continue.
November 6th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Good luck Brittony, I”m sure you’ll have a great year.
My love was ice skating, so I can understand the thrill.
Enjoy the Season………….

November 6th, 2009 at 10:07 am
Haven’t been roller skating almost forever. As a kid, I skated on frozen ponds every winter, until the ice got so thin I fell through more than a couples. Unfortunately, the local rink doesn’t have adult night.

Wow, sweet stuff. I can’t skate; my balance is all wrong for it – every time I’ve tried has met with miserable failure. :/
November 6th, 2009 at 11:54 am
Hey there! A fellow roller skating queen! Way to go girl!! I learned to rollerskate at the ripe old age of 14, then was a roller queen from 14-27. I learned to do figures and learned to waltz from a retired professional roller skating coaching couple. I spent hours and hours learning how to do figure 8’s and the bane of my existance, the 3 point turn!! I never did completely master it then, but hey, I still roller skate up at Odas Park in Orillia. I also sometimes will visit the Roller Palace in Mississauga which incredibly is still open!
All the best to you as you compete for Gold!

I used to speed skate, and I got the same reaction. People couldn’t picture a roller skater speed skating. There isn’t anywhere around me that lets me skate outdoors without destroying my wheels. I never could get used to the length of the inline units, they were hard on my ankles, plus I’m so used to flipping around to stop.

Thanks for writing this post.
I love rollerblading too. But more like for distance rollerblading. It’s a great exercise and you can really fill the speed. I never tried figure rollerblading, but i think i would love it too. It’s just a bit scary to try any figures by myself.

Brittony,
Good Luck!
I’m an older woman (58) I’ve been (4) wheel side by side roller skating since I could walk.
Just for fun of course! — lol
When Roller Blades came out, I tried them too, I love them also.
I also love to Ice Skate.
We had two local Roller Skating Rinks one, was in Woonsocket, RI. — Skate Palace — That’s been vacant for years, and I’m not sure if it’s been torn down or not?
We had Roller Kingdom in Milford, MA — That was transformed into a 10 Pin Bowling Alley — which I have bowled at.
But I like Candlepin bowling better!
Again Good Luck,
Thanks for sharing, very nice article!

I guess you don’t know it very well!

So this week it just happens to be a hot girl!
Get with it — stayed tuned!

November 7th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Hey Brittony,
It is good to practice this kind of sport, when I reas your message I remembered when I started skating for the first time ,I started rounding the icey circle ,suddenly a couple passed in front of me ,I losted control and fell down, my trouser was worn.
But I still like practising this kind of sport because there is no such icy yard in my country.
Being the best in any field of life is amportant.
best Regards,
Fawzi

November 7th, 2009 at 9:58 pm
I’m a roller skater too
well, actually, Inline skater, which is a fairly new addition to the roller skating world.
I did ice skating for bout 10 years and represented Australia in that, and have now been doing inline for about 4 years. I do free skating with all the technical jumps and spins, etc, by the look of it you do figures? Do you do any free skating?
I’m not doing it competitively any more, I just do it for fun. I don’t have much time to be training 3 or 4 times a week any more unfortunately now that I work, am at uni and run my own photography business!

Hey I dont rollerskate but I rollerblade! I do aggressive inline skating dealing with grinding spins air tricks and many more creative things. I feel so totally the same way. When i Strap on my rollerblades I feel like nothing can stop me and feel free. I always say I live 2 roll and I roll 2 live which is my motto. Im not as good as pros or some ppl but I think im pretty decent for what I do. I been skating for around 3-4 years and love it. I hate when I need new parts or need new wheels bcuz it stops me from my life and I hate when I get badly injured or have an injury that stops me from skating like now I have a sprained wrist which is killing me. Im a 17 year old teen turning 18 in January and feel like i wanna skate till im like 30. If any of you guys reading this have any questions IM me on AIM at Heyimalberto . I’ll be very encouraged to answer all your questions.
Roll 2 Live . Live 2 Roll
November 8th, 2009 at 7:30 am
why are you going to quit? Because if you do quit the world will be nothing without you!
November 8th, 2009 at 7:51 am
i never knew roller skating was a sport. i mean i’ve see competitions between 2 diff roller skate places but never anything like u described. if i would have just saw ur pic and not read ur story i would have guessed that u ice skated or figure skated. which ever one u wanna call it. i’ve never see anyone that dressed up for rollerskating.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:53 am
hey girl i think that its wonderful that you roller skate. you see i have a roller rink where i live and its only open on Friday and Saturday
it sucks that i can only go on Fridays because if could i would go waaaaaay more often than usual. its kind of a relaxation thing with me because it just helps me to relive all stress. but thats not the only thing… hehe you see when i really get going i start tearing through the rink like no body business. =))
well i wish you luck and hope u have fun doing what you do best .
your friend savannah.

I signed onto meebo and saw roller skating, and knew I had to read this. I too am a roller skater. I know exactly what you mean. I love it so much. I’m no competetive skater, not am I an artistic one. I’m a jam skater and roller skating is so habitual to me that it’s just assumed that my friends and I are going to go roller skating every tuesday, wednesday, friday and saturday. (yikes 20+ bucks a week.) Completely worth it.
but why are you quitting??! Or are you just quiting the competetive side of it? I can understand that much. I just hope you don’t give up for good. It’s such an amazing sport.
Skaters 4 life. (=
November 8th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I rink skated in my teens, then got away from it. I began to dance skate when I was 38, but again got away from it. I still think of dances when I hear certain songs.
I am sure you will continue to skate, even if not in competition. Good luck in your future.
November 8th, 2009 at 7:30 pm
