With all of the recent text customization improvements, we recently wondered, “How many meebo users out there really use lime green Cursive text?” When the numbers rolled in, we saw that well north of 75% of users stick with the traditional size 10 black Arial text. However, when users want a change, we were surprised to see everyone’s very distinctive tastes!
Our jaws dropped when we realized that hot pink soars over all other customized color option picks and is chosen about 20% of the time. Second and third place go to red and blue which represent about 14% and 12%. Interesting, meebo users are twice as likely to change their text color than either the size or the font type. Here’s the tally:

Next, we looked at text sizes. When meebo users want a change, it looks like they just bump it up a notch or two (size 12, 14, or 16) and every once in a while there’s a special occasion for an all-out, ridiculously large, super-size 48. Size 48 is pretty much unreadable so we think this is probably just a fun way of shouting out to some hopefully understanding friends.

Finally, we examined font types. Those who change their font are most likely to prefer Comic and appear to switch back to Arial frequently. Here’s the breakdown:

In the end, hot pink Comic text is far and away more popular than lime green Cursive text. Looks like there’s an opportunity to replace some colors like yellow and sky blue (let us know if you have any color suggestions). And based upon the popularity of hot pink, we’d like to know how many of you would be interested in a hot pink skin. We’d love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!

Two Things.
1. In the colors percentages.. the last percentage is a negative..
I woul dbe hard pressed to find out how that happened.
2. Second is a feature I would like to have. Would it be possible to set up an away message, So that when away is set, And a person messages me wither from the widget OR the accounts he/she gets a preset message (Customised)
Second Thing. Meebo is great we are going to start putting your Widget as a helpline in all the sites we make.

As much as I love pink, I would not like to see it every day when I sign on Meebo, especially hot pink. Often times I sign on at night when I get home and the blue is soothing and hot pink would be traumatizing.

i wish that we could have a default font and style for ourselves rather than having to change it each time we talk to someone. it would also be nice to have away messages that we can say and just use when ever rather than retyping it. that way if i eat ice cream all the time i can just click on the away message saying “ICE CREAM!! =]!!” just to make life a little bit easier

I think that Meebo should have different shades of pink, since the hot pink is a bit intimidating…. Perhaps a rosy pink would work.

Wow! Whats intresting, is that not too long ago i started using Hot Pink as my font. I must be one of those 21%. I would enjoy being able to change the skin from the usual Blue and Grey, to something different like Pink and Green *wink wink*. You guys should keep up the good work because me and my friends extremely enjoy using Meebo, instead of a client like AIM or YIM. It saves us alot of space on our hard drives, and a lot of hassle with using those clients. Keep up the good work.

I’d really like it if I could boldify or italicize or underline just ONE word in a line of text — the current system has it that if I click bold, the entire line will go bold.

i’m a big fan of orange, either georgia or verdana and sometimes italics depeding on my mood. but since for a while there i would have to reset the font every time, i didn’t bother. now that that’s not an issue i’m thrilled! however i must say i’d gone so long w/ the default even once i knew i could, i don’t think i changed it right away. anyway, all that to say, give it time, people will likely move from the default soon enough. *grin*
on another note: even if meebo gets super huge, if nothing else, keep the blogs, they are very cool, whether they’re about releases or your travels or whatever else. good stuff!!

I would like to give some feedback from what I observe…
Font:
I would like to select a portion of text and apply a different font-face/size/underline/bold/italic to it… but right now if I select say, bold.. the whole text in the text-area becomes bold.
Status:
If I login as a meebo user and if in the settings I enabled my IM’s profile as “online” but I wish to login as invisible.. is this possible now? because I login and then change the status.. can I control this at the time of login? This is perfect when I login as some IM user directly.. but if I login as a meebo user then?
File Transfer:
File transfer will help us a lot.. can you please include that soon.
General:
If my browser window is minimized and a message comes, the text is displayed in the title bar of the window as a prompt, which is great but can you just display the alert as from whom the message came from and not the text along with it please.. because the message might catch the wrong eye even after window is minimized!
Bringing IM to the web is a very novel concept.. thanks for making our lives a little easier. You have done a wonderful job by displaying the historical chat logs; the web services you are using display that text very quickly. Hats off to all of you! Hope you keep up your good work.

White text. I know people are probably confused now, but here’s why. I use Meebo at work for both work and personal conversations. Sometimes I need to show chats to other co-workers and at that time I usually have both personal and work related conversations open. It would be nice to send/receive white text messages for “inappropriate” talk. This way the text is only visible when the user high lights/selects the text…making it an almost hidden message. I know I could minimize the conversation (and hope they don’t send me another message until the co-worker or boss is gone) or not have “inappropriate” conversations at work…but what fun is that?

This is off-topic, but it would be fantastic if you guys could come up with a way to support file transfer over Meebo. My friends and I like to send songs back and forth, and Yahoo\’s file transfer feature is really handy for this, but sadly, it doesn\’t work when I\’m using Meebo.

So we’ve got all kinds of stats on custom font colors, when will we get custom background colors? I personally don’t care for color changes too much, but one of my friends whom I often converse with has a penchant for white text on a light blue background. I get the white text, but unfortunately, I’m stuck with the default white background, so I have to highlight everything he says to be able to read it. Custom background colors (separate for sender & receiver) sure would be nice.

“Courier” isn’t working. It has to be “Courier New”, since Ubuntu/Linux for example doesn’t recognize “Courier” for there is no font that’s named this way.
Besides, I get really, reaaaally ugly fallback-to-user’s-default-fonts when there is no “serif”, “sans-serif” or something like that set. Courier and Cursive can’t be found, then Firefox “falls back” to Arial as my preferred font and renders huge letter spacing which just doesn’t work. So pleeeease provide fixed CSS

Would love to be able to go to my preferences and set the type of Font and Size once, so that i don’t have to do it in every window every time I write. As I use this for work and have turned all my coworkers onto it as well; we are opening and closing windows ALL THE TIME. My preference is Tahoma in Red and I would love to only have to set it once. I personally don’t change my font and color much because I haven’t found that you can change it for all windows so that you can have a the same color and font change for all windows and you don’t have to do it for every chat window each time. This is available as a preference setting in most other IM tools. Is this available in Meebo and I am just not finding it?

The hot pink skin would be cute, but so would emerald green, turquoise, sunshine yellow, etc. What I mean is, if you’re gonna make one skin, make em all!
Also, themes skins would be pretty cool, e.g. Harry Potter, college football teams, music, and so on.

I think HOT PINK is more likely used because of your skin color, it contrast perfectly with it…and if you open more options to change the skin color, which by the way sounds terrific, the polls will change. Any way, nice article.

I’ve been meaning to tell you all that the opportunity to use web-based instant messaging is most excellent for those of use who are restricted from P2P software on corporate (read government) systems. Instead of thinking about “replacing” colors, why don’t you simply “add” more? I’m thinking hexadecimal RGB colors in addition to the presets, so everyone could have their own shades of pink.
Also, about that skin, I think you should just let us set our own CSS style sheet and let us do the job ^_^ Somebody (like me, possibly) would be bound to develop and distribute a pink CSS theme. Having several CSS style sheets associated with the account and swapping between them would also be nice.
To conclude, have my vote for the Fixedsys font, and all my thanks and congratulations for this awesome IM service.
(I wonder how pink got to be such a special and controversial color…)

Well, I’ve tried to comment on this blog twice now, and for some odd reason it keeps closing the window. Well, like they say, third times the charm.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind a hot pink skin, but /please/ make it an option. I’m notorious for getting online during class, and I must say that the hot pink does call a lot of attention. The blue is more common and doesn’t attract attention near as easy. I’m one of those who can’t stand to have people watching their computer screen. I’m also frequently on in the middle of the night. When I sign on, the blue is calm and soothing. I do believe that the hot pink would be quite traumatizing. I can just imagine myself getting scared to death and falling out of my chair. Ha! So, if you /must/ have a hot pink skin, please don’t make it default for us night owls that would die of a heart attack thanks to the hot pink surprise. =P
Also, I do believe this has been mentioned above once or twice above. Would it be possible to just bold (italics and/or underline as well) a word or phrase in a message? The setting right now makes the entire message bold. Is this something that you could make happen??

I think more hues in darker colors of blues and purples would be used a lot in type. Also, anything in the pink zone, which is a usual choice of younger girls.

Whatever you decide to do in terms of colors, fonts, and other customizations, please consider us folk who like to keep things simple. I prefer the default font settings for clarity, so it would be nice if style options don’t clutter the window.
Most importantly, leave an option for people to remove all text formatting (both incoming and outgoing).
As for skins, a set of decent colors would be nice. Just make sure the page’s background changes accordingly, or else there will be some ugly color combination issues.
And that rainbow effect these fans are calling for might serve best as an easter egg

What could be the other reasons than popularity for the hot pink colour and comic sans font? I think other than popularity, pink colour is more brighter and well suited on white background, this could be one of the reason. And if you see comic sans font it is a bit bolder and has a human touch , I mean it\’s not that mechanical. Anyway the comments given here are interesting to read. It\’s a fun to watch and observe different websites designed using odd colours and fonts. What do you think?

he traditional sky blue color rocks. If you’ll make it hot pink it would be cause too much strain on eyes as that aint the kind of color whjich would look good on background. Try changing to any other pastel, sober colors not such hot colors.

The bright colors I\’ve used, but they\’re hard on my eyes after a while. How about added some regular (easy on the eyes) shades of pink or orangy-pink–the kind of color you would see on a rose/flower. Now THAT I would really like. That goes for the background too.

i personally dont like changing the text because you can only change it for that chat window, you cant change it as being a permanent setting. I also have a suggestion of being able for users to make AIM profiles.

Hey, I think you guys are great and all, and I love this site, otherwise I wouldn’t mention it; but… I know you like to know when there’s a problem so here we go. It’s nothing serious, really, but some of the fonts aren’t appearing in the chat windows on Meebo. I know it works on the other end, because I clicked “Cursive” and it stayed in the Italic Arial I had going on my screen, but my not-so-intelligent, drop-out friend complained immediately that he couldn’t read Cursive. I’m not sure if that’s the only one having problems, I didn’t check them all. Thanks!

I really favour purple / lilac / plum ones. I think it’s so awesome how you’re asking us what we’d like. This really makes me feel like I’m in a real chance of getting what I personally may need and want from Meebo.
I do look at my Meebo page (which I rather like keeping bound to one tab on Firefox) and think to myself, “I wish I could customise the background by putting in my own image”.
I’ll certainly be keeping a look out for news…!

Also, the one thing that makes this not better than installed messengers, in my opinion, is that it doesnt flash when you have someone talking to you.

I second the opinion of “Azure Flash”. If we were able to use our own hex values for fonts this would make it far more diverse.
I feel that this could further be overlapped to the skin side too where if you could choose the colour of the skin by typing the hex colour you wanted then you’d have less work to do on skin creation and implimentation.
Officially being able to write our own CSS would also be greatly welcomed by me, but If full CSS documents were to be uploaded to the meebo servers, I can see this having an adverse effect on logon speed. Therefore I suggest that if custom CSS is implimented, users are encouraged to upload it to an external server. Ofcourse, if the effect would be minimal then there is no reason why the CSS shouldn’t be uploaded to the meebo servers.
(yes I said “officially” because it is already possible by scripting =])

so my take on this is that i think that we should be able to pick a background color and it should be our color until we decide to change it again.I think it is a lot easier to do it that way then to have to change your color every time we sign on personally i think it is a waste of time. Also i think that when we do our profiles i think we hold be able to have more than just a hundred characters allowed that is a little to small for a profile and one more thing an a away message should be in color

Is there anyway to default your font? I don’t like having to change it every time I sign on, and I don’t see anything in preferences or account settings.

OKayy i use meebo almost everyday. my parents blocked aim.com i use meebo. All my friends use aim and they have WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYY more options. I would like to have more colors for the texts. It would be amazingly amazing!!! Also, i would love to have more font options and when we put our away messages up they should say even whenwe are offline…… also about the away msg, we should have that in color. IDK ow t use ANYTHING on meebo. I read one of the bllogs and it talks abuout skins. whats that??? then hes like to access it u go to preferences then apearence the classic skins but idk how to get that…. plz help me!!!!!
