Elaine, Sandy and I spent the first part of yesterday deciding on which features to roll out in our next release. We’re going to work hardest on the features that are being most requested in the forum. Our goal is to push the release within a week.
In the middle of the features discussion, we went off on a tangent (totally unusual, I assure you) that I thought was worth mentioning. We basically got into how cool it was that, by the nature of developing applications for the web, we are able to push new features and releases without most of the versioning control and propagation issues inherent in client-side software. For users, it’s as easy as hitting the refresh button. That we’re even able to think in terms of one release per week is just incredible, and says a lot about the power of the model and the potential for innovation across the application spectrum using Ajax.
We’ve been taking things a bit easier now that things are starting to settle down. So far we’ve been hearing that the Google Talk & Jabber functionality is working without major bugs (our first major post-launch release!). We were a bit worried that the password encryption would cause log-in times to become too slow, but it looks like folks aren’t experiencing too much of a hiccup there. We are, however working to optimize this further and hope to push a fix within the week. Don’t forget to submit your emoticons for the design challenge to emoticon@meebo.com by Sept. 25th! Finally, we’ve brought yet another server online.
Finally, a quick round-up on some neat stuff we’ve seen in the Blogosphere about meebo. Eric Rice wants meebo on his PSP. Meanwhile, abunchofrandom seems to have sparked a small trend in setting meebo as his active desktop. Shiv-Prasad posted instructions on how to do this as did uneasysilence. Want to see meebo in Chinese? Now that is highly cool!

Re: shipping software, check out Mark Lucovsky’s essay about how shipping software has changed. Awesome insight from a former Microsoft Distinguished Engineer (1 of only 16 in the entire company)
