Another week, another release of new enhancements / bug fixes / and rooms improvements for you all to play with! Thanks again to everyone who has helped us in tracking down bugs and suggesting enhancements since launch…we seriously appreciate it! Here’s a list of the stuff you can look for:
- Trouble connecting to meebo? With all of your help, we found lots of interesting little edge cases in getting, and staying connected to meebo.
- What was the #1 feature request when we launched meebo? Emoticons! So now there are a bunch of new ones! Check ‘em out. You might wanna try some stuff like :-#, (pacman), (panda), (so) and (r)
- Sending private messages between you and other people in a room? – You guys love it – the curtain rises on its return.
- Trouble reading long long long tooltips in AIM? – no more!
- Everyone wants a speedy meebo… so we focused on reducing memory use and snappier overall performance.
- Embed a room on your web site? Now your guests’ nicknames will be remembered each time they come back.
- On a bit of a flaky connection causing some disconnects? The reconnect button should work ever better!
- Your IMs and private messages will no longer appear under a meebo room. Yay!
- Someone behaving badly in a room? We’ve enabled a mechanism to help others in the room self-moderate if the moderator isn’t around!
Geez that was a long list for one week’s worth of work. There’s actually more, but we wouldn’t want to bore you with the details.
Friday was hack day at meebo, so we’re all working on some fun, personal projects. Keep an eye out for the results right here!

There is a bug – I try to logon to Google Talk, and when I enter the information, then it attaches a Jabber Icon, and thinks it’s a Jabber connection, so I cannot enter Google talk info.

Is there any way to remove a shared video in a room? I accidentally added one I didn’t want to add, and now there’s no way for me to get rid of it (that I can find) other than to flag it over and over again as inappropriate, which it’s not–I just don’t want that particular video in the room. Can you guys design a way for users to remove videos they’ve added? Thanks!

Have I ever mentioned that all of you guys at Meebo are awesome? I can’t even begin to thank you enough for making such a great application. I really like the new self-moderating feature for the Meebo rooms. Now, if only you could fix the problem where I have to refresh the Meebo front page before it’ll let me connect.

hi…meebo has been so awesome, i love the idea of logging on to 2 or more accounts on different messenger at the same time. but for an addition, could you aggregate meebo with skype too? it’d be great! well, at least that’s what i think…
anyway, could u fix the feature when we chat, mayb after we search the rooms we might wanna join several rooms at once, not by starting the search all over again. it’s small requirements, really, but i’d love to join my preferred rooms with just one click away

I am having trouble signing up. I get error message saying Network was unable to connect. When I click on Reconnect button, nothing happens. Also I got message giving several words as my new password, one of which was “arugula.”

Hi Seth and everyone…
Last time I tried to post in these blogs I got “moderated”, that was months ago and no one has yet told me WHY. So hoping for the best here.
It does seem as though the addition of Meebo rooms, salutary as that might be, has wreaked havoc on certain prior functionality. The biggest problem we are having right now is that it seems that the room namelists for NON-Meebo rooms, or at least for AIM rooms, which are the only kind we use right now, have COMPLETELY DISAPPEARED, so no one who comes into our AIM chatroom via Meebo can see the list of people in the room!
So we hope this problem is being worked on because it is so annoying to our visitors that if it doesn’t fix itself soon, we will have to stop recommending Meebo as a method of choice for AIM access!
And we would JUST HATE THAT! 
The other major problem is that we seem to be getting disconnected two zillion times more than we were before the rooms were implemented. Seth acknowledged this in his blog and yes, perhaps (we’re not sure) the reconnect functionality is working a little better, but that sure doesn’t compensate us for the extra times we get clobbered!
Beyond that, an assortment of annoying but not tragic headaches have seemed to arise as a result of the new functionality, e.g., we find we can’t CLOSE certain Meebo windows inside the main window, like especially windows which open for us when someone comes on a Meebo widget window on our website, when it comes time to terminate the chat we click on the X box in the upper right hand corner and…NOTHING HAPPENS! All we can do to get rid of it is to MINIMIZE it to down below! Annoying, not tragic, but WHY WOULD THAT BE???
Anyway, if there’s anything we can do to help, with any of this stuff, the Meebo staff (we hope) knows “all they gotta do is call”!

I’d use the new version of Meebo (not classic) if I could just disable Rooms.

When someone sends me an offline message, either through my meebome widgets or their IM clients, the timestamp on the message is always the time I log into the current meebo session. Were I to log into the equivalent IM client the timestamp would be the time the message was originally sent. Is it possible for Meebo to record this timestamp properly as well?

i’ve been using meebo for a few months now, and thanks guys for the great service. it certainly works better than aim express!
i could be missing something, but is there a way to turn the meebo chats off? they’re always blinking at the bottom of my browser, which would be fine except whenever the “featured chat” changes, my browser slows significantly for a few minutes and i can’t send ims. i’ve looked for a way to turn them off, but have only succeeded in minimizing them- which didn’t help with my problem. maybe i’m blind but… help?

I don’t know if this is a bug or my uni computers are crap but whenever I try to use the group chat function in aim, when I open the chat room, I can’t see the list of people currently in the chat room, is there anyway this can be fixed?

Someone pasting code fragments (from computerlanguages), the result will end up distorted on the other side. Line-Ends are removed and there will be smileys inside. Maybe there is a chance of a “code-paste” ?

Another bug
.
I cant see the cursor while i am typing. So if i have to place a smiley in between two previously typed words, i have tough time finding the spot.
If you can, that will be great. I use Firefox at 1440*900 pixels.
Enhancement:
Some way to upload our old archives from yahoo (which get stored locally) so it helps us keep all the old messages online and we can access it from anywhere (thats the whole point of meebo right?).

Congradulations from Italy. Meebo has kept me intouch with my family for almost two years now. The new features are great and I am glad you have added these. I have put your Meebo me on my site and people message me when I am working on my sites asking all about your MEEBO. It’s being passed on and on and on. Hi there, at first, thanks for your great work.
There is an issue in using meebo that has not been adressed by any bugfixings or enhancements yet: it is not possible to read any status-informations (ICQ away-messages etc.) after personal information of a contact has been gathered. Example: contact A is away – if I hover the mouse over his entry in the contact list, the status-message is displayed – but after a second, the additional information (Birthday, Age, Home Adress) is gathered and displayed instead of the status message. I guess it would be an easy task to add the status (and maybe the “Idle”-information) to the tooltip – but obviously no one ever noticed.
Another solution would be to implement a “Read Status-Message”-feature as it exists in ICQ and most other IM-clients: I right-click on a user, the context-menu opens and in addition to “show profile” there is the option to “show status” or something like that.
Hope you can implement / fix this in a future release.

Rob (the other one): NO ONE CAN. We have literally hundreds of ppl Airhitching whom we have referred to Meebo for access to our AIM chatroom, which we use to guide people onto airplanes crossing oceans, and they ALL report — UNANIMOUSLY — that they can, no longer since the advent of the new Meebo chats, see the AIM chatroom namelist!
Seth, if I didn’t love you guys and everything you do and know that your intentions are pure, honestly, I would suspect SABOTAGE if you don’t address this problem soon!

hey all – thanks for the catch on the AIM list bug for AIM group chat. it’s been submitted to everyone to look into and we’ll try to get that one fixed for one of the upcoming releases.
on skype – we’d love to implement skype in meebo, but the architecture that skype uses is much harder to implement than the other IM networks. unfortunately, that makes skype integration further out than we’d like. sorry about that!

Bug Report: I couldnt warn someone getting in through embedded console from my meembo console. Nothing happens when I initiate a warning.
Advanced Feature Request: When I send a private IM to an embedded user, it pops up for him, but closes immediately after he has replied. But works fine for me. This issue loses track of the private chat my recipient was having.

I am really happy to use Meebo. Not as just because of the tool itself that is great, but by the company´s philosophy. The willingness to evolve something, to do it right and do it fun. I would really appreciate to participate on one of the meetings, like the Guitar Heroes u did… but I am not even close to you (I´m in Brazil!!).
Anyways, appreciated the new icons, but as somebody said above, the thing that I really miss if we compare Meebo and MSN is the ability to send files and most of all, to show the emoticons another person have and we don´t. I think that would be msn killer!!… hehe

On msn messanger there is somethin called a nudge which means if ur geting a little impatient u can give the person ur talkinto a nudge and it will shake there screen!!

Wow, I really don’t like the meebo rooms. It’s fulll of guests joining and leaving all the time. The rest of the people are talking about hooking up, ASL, etc. I can’t believe you guys wasted 5 month of work to bring us chatrooms. Would it be possible to add a font / background color global override feature in the Preferences page? Since Meebo doesn’t pick up background colors, someone with white text and a colored background on another chat client (such as AIM) has their text appear invisible (white on white) in Meebo. If the override option isn’t available, could you at least write functionality to test whether the font color is white (or close to white) and adjust it to grey if so? That would prevent the invisible text problem. AIM and other chat clients have this functionality already.

Iv noticed that meebo works well within Mozilla, but IE however, it tends to lock up for like 5 min, until the whole buddy list is loaded, and the welcome dialog box is closed. This isnt much of a big deal, cause i use Firefox, but when im at work, and i dont want to boss sein me usin AIM, (he doesnt know about meebo) i have to use IE, and it sux…

May sound juvenile but I work in a place where your service is absolutely priceless in that it’s the only way I can get online. However, management frown on chat during business hours as of last week. Sadness. I pout.
Is there any way you can add functionality that will enable users to rename the browser window so that, when minimized, it doesn’t scream out “MEEBOFIREME!!”? Hahaha I’d really like that. If I could minimize it and have the taskbar button called DPMS Database (which means nothing) or something that would be HIGHLY titilating.

In conversations, I don’t always get the responses through from whoever I’m chatting to….one minute it says “My Friend is Typing” then nothing appears on the screen….it’s fine their end and can be highly confusing when the conversation doesn’t make sense to me but is fine for whoever I’m chatting to! It seems to be intermittent and isn’t followed by a netwrok connection message or anything….
Is this a meebo problem?

Hi,
I get the following message when logging in to Meebo in IE.
“Are you sure you want to navigate away from this page? If you leave, your meebo IM sessions will not be preserved! Press OK to continue, or cancel to stay on the current page”.
Clicking “ok” or “cancel” closes my meebo page but I remain logged in. However, I’m unable to see the meebo page.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It is not uncommon for me to not see the emoticons in your blog post that shows up automagically when I sign in to meebo.

I am unable to see these new emoticons even in your blog post. They come up as broken images.
I would also like to see you come up with emoticons that match those of the other IM services so that when someone from IM’s me with an emoticon, I can see the image rather than the code (i.e.

I dont’ know what you’ve done, but since a few days, meebo has much more bugs…
When I try to sign up, it often freezes… I dont know if this because of my internet 56kbps connection but it’s worse than before. Also, we never see the emoticons in the news blogs. You should fix this annoying problem when we enter and nobody appears in the contact list. Finally, the group conversations function doesn’t work well if we resize it : a part of the text is hidden. And where are the names of the speaking people at the right side ?
P.S. it would be better to show full nicknames like before than to show only the enging when they are long. I prefered it…
So, continue to work ’cause this release disappointed me.

Meebo freakin’ sucks. it can’t stay on any internet connection whatsoever. I get kicked off more than I can actually have a freakin’ conversation. I never thought I could be so frustrated with an instant messenger service in my entire life. Good god. Make it better or something.

i just wanted to say that whenever i use meebo in firefox, after i close the window i get a “firefox has encountered a problem and needs to close” error meesage that asks to send a report to windows. this onyl happens after i close the window, so it doesnt actually affect me at all. The weird thing is it only happens when i use multiple tabs within firefox. if i just use meebo then close i dont get the error, but if i use it in a tab while doing something else in another tab, ill get the message.

Reducing memory use? Whatever… I just restarted my PC, opened one single IE window for meebo (this is now the second) and your POS web site takes up 60MB of memory. The whole reason I started using meebo in the first place was because I was sick of my old multi-IM application growing (odd, those developers thought IM was the most important application in the world too…) into a supposed-to-be-used-for-everything beast.
I am starting to dislike meebo now.

Good job you guys. But i noticed that anytime i get connected to my yahoo messenger using Meebo, i wudn’t be able to receive files sent to me. This doesn’t happen when i get connected directly.
Is there something i’m not doing right?

I hadn’t used Meebo in a while, and I tell you what, coming back now the site is far more peppy and responsive, the reconnect functionality works 10x button, your redesigns show great examples of cross-browser compatibility and user-friendliness and your innovations are fantastic. You deserve all the acclaim you get! Thankyou so much for your time, energy and passion into such a fantastic (and still free!!) product.
If only all of us software developers could be like you guys! ‘Christian’ got it right: I want to be like you if I ever grow up! *grin*

I couldn’t figure out how to moderate… we had an annoyance in the Lily Allen room, and all I could do was Warn, then Mute the offender. Is that how you do it? Also, I couldn’t become a “member”… what does that do?

I´ve been using Opera 9.20 with Meebo, and when I receive a message, the meebo window makes the Opera process up to 100% processor.
