When Matt, our server intern, joined us this summer we talked about a lot potential projects he could tackle. Here at meebo we like to give the interns free reign to try out a bunch of stuff but at the same time, incorporate as much as we can into the main product.
Matt, being the enthusiastic guy he is, picked the meatiest project we could throw at him for the summer. Ever since meebo launched almost 2 years ago, there’s been a front-runner of feature requests that has always made our lists. On almost every release, it manages to sneak into a comment, a blog comment, a forum post, and many an email… hence why it made the intern project list. With Vijay’s help, Matt has been working hard to bring you all one of the most highly requested features in meebo’s history… drum roll please… file transfer!
You’re thinking, “no way!!!” Way!
You’ll notice that there’s a new bright and shiny button on the IM window toolbar (the white square with the swanky green arrow). We’ve tried to make the whole transfer process as easy as we could, so all you have to do is click a button and upload a file. The receiver on the other end will get a link to click on (similar to a meebo rooms invite) and all they have to do is click and accept. We’re only allowing meebo account holders to send files, but anyone can receive… even your friends who are not on meebo (but should be =p). We’re not quite supporting this feature in Safari yet, but hopefully soon!
In addition we’ve thrown in a few more animated emoticons (check out “hug” in particular) and a few bug fixes as well. We’re super excited to see what you all think so please send us feedback and suggestions.
Matt and Vijay have already started cooking up a blog entry with more technical details if you all are interested, so expect that soon. Otherwise, enjoy!
cheers,
sandy

Fantastic! Keep up the great work everyone!
September 10th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
This feature of file file transfer would literally want me to abolish the use of messengers.
I think the only feature I would want as of now is that of a web camera so that video chat is also possible.
Cheers!!!!

at least. Nice!!! *hug*
September 10th, 2007 at 9:33 pm
Congratulations! This is one small step for IMers, one giant leap for web-based instant messaging!
Matt and Vijay: So what’s going on in the back-end? Amazon S3, right? How long are files stored? Are you placing upload restrictions?
Just an idea… how about a software solution to let users ‘direct connect’ machines with one another, where file transfers are sent/received bit-by-bit in real time, as opposed to having to wait for one user to upload before the receiving user can download a file?
Again, congrats!
September 10th, 2007 at 9:34 pm
Excellent! I have been waiting for this! I will definitely be putting this feature to use.
Like the other poster said, it would be awesome to have webcam support too, but I would guess that webcam support is even a more hairy feature than file transfer.
Keep up the awesome work! Meebo FTW!
September 10th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
Yay!!!!!!!!!!!! Me = stoked 4 U (and me)
September 10th, 2007 at 10:16 pm
I’m a help desk analyst. I am a definate promoter of MEEBO!! I was turned on by a techie and I promote it everywhere at every job I have and more. Meebo is the BOMB!! Excuse my Bronxisms but Meebo has cured that addition when I need to IM and couldn’t.
You came through for me and I am sooooooo Meebo!!!!! Yo, people keep up the excellent work!!!!
September 10th, 2007 at 10:32 pm
Yay, Matt! Way to be awesome. File transfer is key. Once again you’ve proved that you’re my most genius friend.
September 10th, 2007 at 10:37 pm
YAY!!! Now, if only meebo had a webcam feature… but I’m not holding out for that one. You guys rock! Thanks for meebo!!

First congrats to whole team specially to guys(Matt and Vijay& those who have helped them),Finally a long awaiting request has come ou,but i need put it under ruggred test to know its true working potential. But still its a small step to a big leap & meebo has changed the way of IM with its feature & new dimension, ideas.
SUGGESTION TO MEEBO TEAM:-
There are many enthusiastic techies meebo users out here across the globe who are willling to put there minds out help you in developing new things, why dont you put your feature request list on blog like you give it to ur interns & some might team up & develop new features or fix a bug, with the inputs you can give out & give you back which you might test.
guys give a thought on this long awating request. This might change the dimension
Users:-
Those who like this idea can support this & also do write to me.
Cheers!!!

Is that a real button or you just want some publicity???
Anyway, I think mebo is below messenger. Just use meebo because mess is banned at my work…
Well…wish you all best in the world!!!
September 10th, 2007 at 11:45 pm

September 11th, 2007 at 12:07 am
Next step: API!
I have a million and one ideas (ok, maybe not that many) that I want to get to grips with
Bloody awesome feature though… Been waiting for this for some time, my e-mail was getting far too abused.

September 11th, 2007 at 1:21 am
when does meebo can have comments(or message for friends, I don’t remember what it called) for msn…? just like the one when we use msn messenger… messages on the right of nickname…
September 11th, 2007 at 1:34 am
Wonderful! congrats!
Can meebo users now also receive files?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:47 am
hey, good job guys.
still not satisfied with the proprietary meebo smilies…. they only show up as a smiley for meebo users. If i was chatting to someone else on say, Live Messenger, all they’d see is the character symbol for it. Worse still, it would be a combination of Live Messenger’s own smiley characters plus a random character… (like meebo’s pig faced smiley). 90% of my contacts are not meebo users (i’m working on it tho
), and as a result, I’ve never been able to make use of meebo smilies because they wouldn’t make sense to the other users.
why not make the smilies such that it’s actually a custom smiley image (not just keyboard character shortcuts) that would come up as a custom smiley for the IM user who isn’t on meebo? I know that’s possible with Live Messenger, but I’m guessing it’s difficult to implement for all the different IM protocols……still…worth a try.
September 11th, 2007 at 2:08 am
If Yahoo/MSN Messenger users attempt to send us files via their official client softwares, will we be able to receive them?
September 11th, 2007 at 2:08 am
Nice work! I’m totally dependent on meebo especially at the office and I’m happy that file transfers are now available! All we need now is web cam capabilities (hint hint) hehe. Thanks!
September 11th, 2007 at 2:36 am
this is sooo cool!!! meebo rocks!!! great job guys!!!
September 11th, 2007 at 2:48 am
this sendfile feature was definetely needed, and as other have said, with this new feature we can finally uninstall and throw away all local IM clients
September 11th, 2007 at 2:52 am
maybe I am stupid, but I don’t see the icon for file transfer????
September 11th, 2007 at 2:56 am

September 11th, 2007 at 3:42 am

anytime soon ?….
Is there a particular problem with integrating Skype? cuz it sure is one of the biggest networks out there. It would be reaaaaally gooooooood to… OK, you know what I’m trying to say, right?

September 11th, 2007 at 5:33 am
The file transfer does not go over HTTPS! Security is a major concern for me, since I use meebo a lot from work or at public places. If the meebo session is running over secure HTTP, then please try and make the file transfer work over HTTPS as well.
September 11th, 2007 at 5:34 am
Awesome – I teach librarians how to use IM – and this is absolutely going to thrill them. Thanks for all of the hard work on this!
September 11th, 2007 at 5:41 am
Great, but can’t find button.. and can’t receive files from other msn clients.
I’m using only the msn feature of meebo :O
September 11th, 2007 at 5:58 am
at the risk of spoiling the party, i have to point out that this wonderful button is not visible on my browser (firefox 2.0.0.6), on vista. absolutely nothing. i opened a message window and found nothing like that. it seems a problem in firefox only because it is there when using IE7
September 11th, 2007 at 6:15 am
I don’t see either the FT button or the hug icon using IE6 on XP Pro SP2.
September 11th, 2007 at 6:23 am
Thank you all so much for your hard work! I’m looking forward to using meebo more and more. I noticed that it only allows traffic from my end. My friends can’t send me files… is this correct?
September 11th, 2007 at 6:35 am
wow, that works beautifully!
a progress bar for the upload might be nice, but I wouldn’t consider it a necessity.
My bud said it downloads way quick – always a plus!
curious, does meebo do any virus scanning and whatnot on the files?
September 11th, 2007 at 6:35 am
Speaking of the direct-file-transfer; how about adding or integrating a seamless copilot.com like product?

Thanks a lot guys! Congratulations on a perfect file transfer method! I love it! One request though. Eventually, could you make so that we could also accept file transfer requests from Meebo?
Again, Congratulations!

Your friend can log into her IM service from the Meebo front page. She doesn’t need to set up a separate Meebo account. Once she’s logged in, the file download begins. Great feature!
More users! More users! How can this still be free?

Hi! Thank you for the new function! This will be very helpful.
Just one question. I tried testing the file transfer today with a friend who is using Yahoo! Messenger. He receives the link to the file, but when he clicks on it he gets an error:
file no longer available.
And this is within the minute he receives the link. So I’m not sure if my upload actually went through or it is deleted too soon?
For your checking please? Thanks!

Thanks.

Wow! I honestly never thought I’d see the day!
Man, there have been some great evolutionary steps made in meebo history, but this is going to have to be one of the bigger milestones.
I can see voice chat & webcam being implemented next, then all we would need is something like instant email notification, and every other chat program/client out there will have become obsolete!
I am SOOOO looking forward to that day!
Kudos, guys.
September 11th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
wow..good job guys… hope more projects will come here in meebo.. Meebo Rocks!!!!
thanks for sharing this thing…

September 12th, 2007 at 6:04 am
Awesome!
Thanks for that and keep up the great work, guys!
September 12th, 2007 at 6:06 am
That’s great news, thanks for the development… However I couldn’t use it… Let me explain a bit:
when you launched meebo rooms there were a couple of bugs that led you to rapidly roll back to the classic.meebo.com . I started using classic since then. And this feature is not available in classic mode.
I changed (again) to meebo.com and, after login, my IE shows an alert asking me to stop running scripts, so my computer won’t be unresponsive. If I click Yes, it stops running the scripts, but meebo won’t launch / connect properly. If I choose No it goes unresponsibly.
Maybe the scripts are still associated w/ the meebo rooms. I dunno. You could probably check it. Feel free to ask me for more specific details.
Best regards from Brazil
September 12th, 2007 at 6:13 am
I’m disappointed that your privacy policy doesn’t address file transfer. Do you store all files transferred through Meebo? Imagine the snooping you can do.
September 12th, 2007 at 6:32 am
[...] desktop counterpart do. Meebo has once again proved that they are the greatest among all web IMs by adding this feature. All you have to do is click on the icon, and locate your file in the next dialogue [...]

This is a great feature! Thanks for listening to your user community!
September 12th, 2007 at 6:48 am
Thanks for listening to the user community! Great job with Meebo!
September 12th, 2007 at 7:00 am
Awesome – this is a great improvement. Is it possible to have the URL “live” on the widget end? At this point, widget users have to copy and paste the URL to a new browser window – would be really, really cool if they could just click on the link to open a new window with the file transfer ready to go!
September 12th, 2007 at 8:00 am
It’s kind of amazing the innovation and talent you guys are acquiring.
Make me a little hopeful not all of our talent is being sourced from india. Heee.

I was just debating the merits of meebo with a friend the other day. The one thing I couldn’t seem to win on was file transfer – when I saw the new button, I was very excited and put it to the test immediately.
Incredibly happy.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:21 pm

Greetings from HK! Meebo certainly plays a big role in my daily routine,
especially when it’s my only way out of my pressured work.
Thanks for all the hard work guys!
I do have one question for you great fellows though…
where can I find the codes for the new emoticons?
I remember there was once you guys mentioned adding rose and star,
but now I don’t remember the codes and surely have no idea about the hug icon.
Hope to see them soon and cheers to you all! =)

It’s probably just me, but the Send File icon looks too close to the Chat Logs icon… in a spatial relativity kinda way.
Send file is great though… thanks!
September 12th, 2007 at 7:09 pm
really surprise! it works perfectly, thanks matt and vijay, they are great technicians!

September 12th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
hi, hopefully next time, you can work on broadcasting a web cam here as well…now that would so so neat
September 12th, 2007 at 8:01 pm
that’s great but how about a way to change your meebo password?
September 12th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Why can’t we sign in to the meebo.com account while “Appear Invisible” is checked?
September 12th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
This could indeed be a useful feature…but one of my major concerns are viruses. Does this compromise the security of meebo? if so, to me it’s not acceptable. what about even having a “file transfer” enable/disable option? (off by default).
Webcam and voip would be great additions…as well as QQ support. and if i’m not asking too much, Translator support (in the light of QQ). That would really enable global communication and connection!
September 12th, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Thanks for adding the sendfile feature.. gr8 job.. btw, small comment.. for other icons on the message window the pointer becomes a hand when I hover my mouse over it.. but it remains a pointer when I hover my mouse over send file icon.. but the tool tip works now.. so that is cool.. on a different note.. how about letting me change my status on different messengers separately without I having to log out and log in each time I wanna go invisible on one of my accounts..
Keep up the good work.. I love using meebo .. that is all I use now on my computer ..

Congratz team…
We’re waiting for your Meebo’s next improvement..
September 12th, 2007 at 11:25 pm
Whoah! Finally, I can do file transfer! Thanks heaps.
But then, is there any chance that we can receive files sent from Yahoo Messenger or MSN? Because all I can do now is send file.
Also, for users with Meebo accounts, can you find a way for us to login as invisible?
I am using Meebo 99% of the time since I started using it last year, and I have also gotten some colleagues to switch to Meebo.
Thanks for the new feature. Looking forward to more!
Rock on Meebo peeps!

September 13th, 2007 at 2:23 pm
This is great,
As others have said, once you can receive files too, this will be the most awesome messenger system going.
All we need now is a webcam feature which will work with all the messenger protocols, and meebo.com will be so far ahead of it’s competition nobody will want to use anything else but meebo.com
Keep up the good work guys and gals, really appreciate all the hard work you put into this web based system.

Hi all,
Thanks for all of your posts! We love hearing from you and knew you would be jazzed about File Transfer! I thought I would address some of the questions that came in.
1] The File Transfer button is indeed real!! AND it works in Firefox. We don’t have it available in Safari yet, but will soon. If you don’t SEE the file transfer icon in an IM window, try reloading the meebo page and clearing your cache. You’ll find instructions for doing that at:
http://wiki.meebo.com/doku.php?id=clear-cache-cookies
If the problem persists, write to us at comments@meebo.com letting us know which browser you are using (i.e. IE6/7, Firefox 2.0, etc.), and the Operating System you are using (i.e. Windows XP, Linux, etc.) and we’ll be happy to help you!
2] As far as file transfers:
a. A meebo account is required to use meebo file sharing.
b. A meebo user can SEND files to anyone.
c. Anyone can RECEIVE a file from a MEEBO user.
d. Currently meebo users CANNOT receive files from non-meebo users, but that feature will be available soon!
e. You can only transfer a maximum of 10MB files at a time.
f. Each user’s limit for file transfers is 30MB/month.
g. We’re working on increasing your maximum file transfer limit.
3] In regards to viruses, we’re releasing an update that should help mitigate potentially harmful files. In the meantime we suggest you be careful when those types of files are shared with you.
4] If you are logged into meebo and sent someone a file, but they never see it on their end, they may have meebo.com blocked.
5] Yah, we know if you hover your mouse over the File Transfer button, it doesn’t show a hand. We’ll fix that next release
6] For those of you using Yahoo who experienced problems transferring files, if the problems persist, please write to comments@meebo.com and we’ll work with you to figure out what the issue is.
7] If you need to reset your password, or forgot it, the following link will help:
http://wiki.meebo.com/doku.php?id=troubleshooting#i_ve_lost_my_meebo_account_password
8] Emoticons
a. For the hug, type: (hug)
b. For the pacman, type: (pacman)
c. For the rose, type: (r)
d. For the star, type: (*)
9] And of course if other issues have come up, I’ve missed one of you or you have any other questions, please write to us: comments@meebo.com! We’re here to help! And of course we are constantly updating the wiki page with more information, so be sure to check that out too!

Hi there… congrats and thanks for having created Meebo, really nice!
But what about receiving files from other people? They stay in standby waiting for me accepting the file trasnfer, and nothing happens on my side.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
We can’t receive any files.
This is one thing that I don’t really care for.
I can’t send files to my friends that don’t use meebo.
I thought it would be a better alternative to the IM programs
I’m sorry but I won’t ask all my friends to switch from what they’re used to
because the other obviously works better for what we need
and need the ability to send/receive files quickly as an email alternative.
Not sure why that’s such a hard concept.
I do like the concept of them all in the same window, however there is many times that meebo will lock up my pc.. and yes I know it’s meebo as everything else is closed.
You have no help section.. when I click it, it goes to a blog.
If I wanted a blog, I would click blog.

I’d like to see file transfers from other none meebo users to meebo users plz. It does not make sense to don’t have this, was what I was looking for when I searched the web and for my surprise meebo is unable to have file transfer requests sent from other users.
