A friend of mine who’s a senior executive at a very large entertainment company told me that because his company sells through retailers, cable, and other channels, they don’t directly talk to or hear from their customers, and it’s a problem they’re actively trying to change.
It’s really different here at meebo, and that’s one of the reasons I joined.
We are very fortunate to enjoy that dialog with you, through the blog, forums, feedback, and surveys like the one we put out last week.
The number of responses we received was overwhelming and we’d like to share some of the results…
11,194 people completed the survey and of those people, roughly half were female, half were male.
74% of people said they found out about meebo from a friend or co-worker.
79% said you use IM every day, 80% IM for an hour or more a day. 21% said they IM for 10 hours or more. Wow!
We asked what else you do while on meebo.
78% said email, although 63% said they IM more than email. Other popular activities done while meeboing include: playing games 32%, sharing/listening to music, 50%, surfing the web 62%, doing work 70%, and 23% said they watch TV and use meebo at the same time.
79% said they prefer IM to text messaging (whew!)
In terms of advertising categories, we’ve received very positive feedback on our bubble ad that is on the left of the screen. Respondents said they’d like to continue to see music there, and also see ads for movies, tech toys, and some other stuff. Very few said they’d like to see political advertising. Got it!
We had 6,663 comments on features you’d like to see on meebo – which is awesome. We’re going through those each week and I’d imagine that you’ll see them show up in our product development.
Thanks to all who responded. Knowing more helps us build better products, fix bugs, and it’s great to come to work feeling like I know a little bit more about the people who use the products we build.

That’s all admirably agile-ish of you… trying to touch base with your customers and all. But isn’t it kind of preaching to the choir to ask people on Meebo a survey question like “Do you prefer IM or text messaging?” How can the answer be at all a surprise??? Your entire survey base is IMers. I’m sure if you sent out a text message question to all regular text messagers, then it’d be the same percentages but a reverse outcome.
As for the advertising… of course the 20 -> 40 somethings on here that have generally NEVER been interested in politics aren’t interested in seeing political ads. It doesn’t mean it’s not good for them to see, however.
But I know, your objective is to make some money, not rustle up interest in politics or any other social cause. So in a way I understand… but still, in a way, I wish you weren’t just pandering to the audience.
BTW… anyone want to bet on the response you’d get if you asked “Advertising or no advertising??”

October 15th, 2007 at 6:23 pm
@Josh, for advertising or no advertising, i personally would answer the first. That’s the best way to keep a great app free, and the guys at meebo try doing it in a really non-annoying way.
Martin, we’re waiting for the rest results – pirates vs ninja, coke vs pepsi – we need to know that!
October 15th, 2007 at 6:29 pm
my apologies heh heh.
here are a few more:
pirates.. 48% ninjas 52% – sorry ninjas – it was recently pirate day after all.
punk marginally beat out prep 51% to 49%.
apple 35% vs pc 65% – those ads work!
H&M 56% vs abercrombie and fitch at 44%
coke 66% vs pepsi 34%. wow.

MEEBO! heysan is trying to beat you in the mobile world. They are unsuccessful as of yet, but you must not let them catch up! WAR!
October 16th, 2007 at 6:21 am
It would be nice if we could opt out of the blog pop-up. Meebo takes a while to load and freezes up Firefox temporarily as it is.
October 16th, 2007 at 6:58 am
Another feature would potentialy be some kind of cam feature that works like/with Yahoo… i have friends that have cams and when i use Meebo elsewhere than home (about 80-90% of my time on Meebo) I have no access to these images. and i agree with Aaron, allow us to remove the blog. PLEASE…
October 16th, 2007 at 7:06 am
I gotta agree with Aaron. The blog pop-up belies the minimalist approach that meebo seems to take(rock the lighttpd!). That being said, I wouldn’t opt-out of it….it’s nice to know there’s a friendly face behind meebo.
For features I’d like to see, at the top of the list would be a “work-friendly” skin. It would be even cooler if you could make everything look like an openoffice spreadsheet or something. When people see my machine from across the office, they know right away that I’m using IM and it can be embarrassing at times.
I recently installed Beryl on my machine, and I gotta say it rocks. As a web-dev myself, I’m fairly confident that the same eye-candy would be impossible on Meebo, but a boy can dream…
Back to reality, it would be nice if your ads were a bit more targeted. I don’t know if it’s possible given your privacy policy, but I actually like well-targeted ads(i.e: letting me know that there’s a Zero 7 concert in my area). I *really* want you guys to make money so you can continue to provide the service, but ads for stuff I don’t *want* are really annoying to me. How do you figure out what people want? hire me! haha
October 16th, 2007 at 7:11 am
I almost forgot! Mobile messaging would be HUGE! I think it would be wise to put out a call for testers on the meebo blog. I see people with smartphones all over the place. This is really a big growth market, hit it hard.
October 16th, 2007 at 7:21 am

Wow that great and all but what the F**k for? Okey-Dokey!!
October 16th, 2007 at 7:32 am
I think the skin is simple and easy. I like it. It isnt too busy, and i think its the simplest way to go.
Plus, i think the whole advertising thing is a good idea, or we’d be paying for meebo. Im glad it isnt political advertising because that would in turn, cause problems with users. The music adds are cool because i live my life by music so i like it. Tech adds would be pretty cool too since the generation mainy using meebo is constantly changing with technology.
Thanks for all the survey results!
October 16th, 2007 at 9:46 am
I’m curious as to the percentages to the Pepsi vs Coke question. BTW, I’m with the No Advertising (good point Josh) but I understand someone’s gotta make moola!

I made a post on the forum asking about developer documentation and expressing interest in porting OTR ( http://cypherpunks.ca/otr/ ) to Meebo. My post wasn’t even noticed for weeks, there is no documentation to speak of, and no one from Meebo even seemed to notice.
I want to like Meebo, but you guys seem to put more effort into the appearance of friendliness than actually being friendly.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:44 pm
Wow. I’d never expect that there are roughly half males and half females.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
meebo is just a fad if that, and will quickly die out. you have no firm product offering, and to be honest, not a lot of people give a sht about meebo. marketing and consumer research are good when you have a product to differentiate or design but that’s not the case here. i’m curious as to what your business plan is. sorry i’m so mean.
October 16th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
ummm one question why is it everytime i logg on my stuff never shows up it always says none of your things are working right now please try later or something like that
October 16th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
What about the pepsi vs. coke question? That’s the only reason why I took the survey!!!
October 16th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Umm. Someone said how they think a way to get webcams working on here would be good. I definately agree with that (:. Yknow, if theres any way to connect it to yahoo, msn, or aim? And, when i add people on here, it doesnt add them to my usual aim base. (I use trillian basic.) Is it a problem with trillian or meebo?
Thanks (;
October 16th, 2007 at 1:46 pm
This doesn’t have anything to do with this blog, but I think font colors should have like 53795 choices.
October 16th, 2007 at 3:11 pm
How do you find out and get all of the peoples answers like do you email every single person. I would like to try something like you did but first i need to know how. Please tell me how by emailing me at jaden@wilkinsdigital.com.
Thanks

You know, I didn’t say this on the quiz, but what would be nice would be to have a feature that I can talk to people using my microphone. I know that would take a lot of work, but it would soooo be worth it so I don’t have to go back to my AIM or Yahoo or something of my own just to talk to people.
October 16th, 2007 at 3:53 pm
I like Meebo because it is the only social site that our internet filter has yet to block.

Well I can tell you for a fact that at my school when we’re in school we go to the computer labs a lot. && its wicked boring to just do work so we listen to music & check email and facebook. Only because they blocked myspace from us.They also blocked any form of instant messaging. But meebo isnt blocked at our school. So thats wicked lucky. Especially for me since I use AIM,MSN & Yahoo.
October 16th, 2007 at 7:04 pm
I love meebo. it is so much fun. Who ever made it good job.

Hey team, love you guys. any thought to ever including IRC on here? Then it’d be perfect
some of these sites like connectiontube and ircatwork are so overload and it really sucks. Just wondering if that was in the works. Thanks

cool stats but what I really care is MOVIE stats!! I want to know who else loves The Big Lebowski
October 16th, 2007 at 8:03 pm
I think the bubble ad is a great tool, not obtrusive but enough to gather attention. I’d really like to see you make that available to smaller companies, start-ups, etc., and perhaps rotate through to give the smaller businesses out there some additional exposure.
Either way, Meebo is an awesome tool, something we use every day. As soon as it’s available on mobile devices (blackberry specifically) we’ll use meebo on our site directly to keep in contact with visitors to our website.
Keep up the great work!

I have to say I found out about meebo from a friend and I am planing on using it more and more since I use computers both at school and at home, and keeping my buddy list around for a good social break is great.
2 suggestions I have is:
Could you make it so that the user can select there own picture for a wall paper?
Could the widgets be made for off site code? sort of like what igoogle.com, myspace and other 2.0 sites have done?
Thanks a lot for all your hard work on putting this great tool together!

Hey guys and gals and what not down there in the bowels of Meebodom. I’ve officially uninstalled all my first party IM client softwares and I’m going 100% meebo at home and at work! (yeah bask in it.)
One request! I need to be able to italicize/bold/underline parts of a message within the whole. How am I supposed to add emphasis if I can only do italics with the whole message that way? Any way, thanks for the kickin tool, and go Ninjas!
October 17th, 2007 at 9:35 am

October 17th, 2007 at 10:25 am
I didn’t have time to do the survey, but please add me to the pile of people who *hate* the bubble ads…otherwise meebo is really cool!
October 17th, 2007 at 11:20 am
I think its sad that so few people wanted political info displayed in the bubble. People are so caught up in what new toy comes out next month they have no clue if we will be around to enjoy it or if its going to cost twice as much because of a new tax code or what not. Wake up people and take active role in the future of your country and world.
October 17th, 2007 at 11:44 am
79% said you use IM every day, 80% IM for an hour or more a day. 21% said they IM for 10 hours or more. Wow!
If only 79% use IM every day
How can 80% use IM every day for more then an hour….. L2MATH!
October 17th, 2007 at 12:00 pm
I know meebo.com from my friend
It’s great, we can sign in to our messenger without installing the client
two thumbs up for meebo

MEEBO GETS SO BORING WHEN NOBODYS ON
October 17th, 2007 at 3:49 pm
The webcam feature would definitely be appreciated. Can the developers give a rough time frame of when the webcam feature (perhaps voice too) will be available on meebo? Thanks.

October 18th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Yes, altering the Meebo to a work-style preference is a great idea, as well as other enviorment-similar skins, too. A lot of people use IMing for work purposes, or convenience to communicate with after-work plans/home, but it can be a hassle having to explain yourself to your stingy boss that you use an IMing service for these particular reasons. Some sort of a plain, mild colour Excell sort of spreadsheet should be used to enhance and encourage the use for employees and professional communication. Most people wouldn’t be attracted to something that may be child like or mostly used by children and teens unless there is a sort of way that Meebo can reach out to the workforce.
