During the course of the past several weeks, the meebo team has pulled crazy marathon coding sessions to create a fabulous Firefox add-on with visual notifications and sidebar buddylist. As someone on meebo’s design team, I felt it fitting to tell the add-on creation story my own way – enjoy! – Christian

Cool, Thanks MEEBO
Great Mission, and I love this Extension
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:13 pm
I was very excited to see this extension when I read this blog post. I immediately installed it and unfortunately there is one key thing that I thought it would solve but it does not…. You still have to have the main meebo.com website open. If you can make it so ONLY the sidebar needs to remain open, then I’ll give ya mad props.
A list of other features for it would be the following:
- ability to collapse offline buddies
- ability to select small version of buddy list (smaller rows, no icons, etc.)
- right click ability in the sidebar
- when you click to message someone, a new firefox window will “pop-out” instead of opening in the main meebo.com window (the thing we want to go away)
I’m only so picky because I like the idea of it and meebo in general and really want it to be everything it can be. My goal is to not have to have any custom software on my machines… OS and Firefox only.
Thanks!
DJ

again this is all fine and dandy but where the freaky deaky dutch is the ps3 browser support?!?!!!?!?!?!?!!?!?
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:35 pm
haha thats awesome
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:41 pm
Cooooooooooooooooooool! Thanks!
Lets test it…
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:49 pm
I agree with everything that DJ said. I do like that you can deactivate the browser window blink! Great job meebo team!
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:51 pm
I agree with DJ. I was super excited about this untill I saw it still left us with the main big meebo window in firefox. I thought this woudl get rid of a tab for me…
Also the fact that I can’t use it in ubuntu which is my main os really upset me to….
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:52 pm
Paul you rock! Zeppelin rules, man — rock on! \m/
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:53 pm
ahhhhhh, let us close the meebo window and stay logged in.. that’d be greatt.
OH. and i really, really like how if you make it small enough the font gets smaller.. that’s really awesomee!
October 22nd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
hmmm, for some reason when I sign on with my meebo user id, it only brings up my AIM account…. weird.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:00 pm
Gonna give it a try. Nice comic though. Hahaha.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:01 pm
Woweee!
I do agree with DJ though, it would be nice to have one tab less…
Im sure a small area at the bottom for the ads wouldn’t be minded…
Cheers. Meebo FTW!!!
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:05 pm
I installed it, and signed in, but it seems that if I sign in with the ext, most of my contacts appear as offline, when in fact, they aren’t. o.O If I just go straight to meebo.com and sign in there, all is fine and dandy.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:32 pm
What’s the point of having a sidebar, if you have to keep the Meebo window open in a separate tab?
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:49 pm
When I saw this I was excited that I could finally get rid of a meebo tab, but if I try to close the tab it logs me out of the sidebar! You gotta make it so all you need is the sidebar.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:51 pm
My first thought was YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
However, reading DJ’s comments gave me pause. I’m planning to install this on my home computer, so having it as a sidebar would be great rather than having the main meebo open. I wouldn’t mind an add here and there if it would help bring this vision about.
October 22nd, 2007 at 6:53 pm
I tried this extension, doesn’t seem to log me in. I’m using FX 2 and each time I login it just takes me back the initial screen asking me to login ?? any help here?
October 22nd, 2007 at 7:02 pm
swan:
It isn’t Win32 only, it works like a charm on my OS X machine, so maybe its a bug with Linux/Firefox for Linux, I haven’t had a chance to try it myself on a Linux machine.
October 22nd, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Linux returns this “unsupported” error:
“meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
October 22nd, 2007 at 7:55 pm
AWSOME EXTENSION! Just what I was waiting for, with notifications and all…
Just add support for messaging in the side bar, icons for AIM users in meebo, and have it lose connection less often, and it will be perfect!
October 22nd, 2007 at 7:59 pm
no news on any fix for the firefox/gutsy build??? im eagerly waiting to test this.
October 22nd, 2007 at 8:40 pm
yeah.. it doesn’t work with linux_x86 :’(
i’m using gutsy gibbon.
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:26 pm
I still have to keep the meebo tab opened….what is the big deal?
October 22nd, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Installed, Signed in, Saw Meebo.com being required to be open, UNINSTALLED. Better luck next time..

too cool. such a good idea.
October 22nd, 2007 at 10:17 pm
Very impressive work! This is a great set of features to start with. I’m sure the next release will have even greater features. Man, I can’t wait!
October 22nd, 2007 at 10:56 pm
Yeay!!! Firefox and meebo united!
This is great direction to go! Keep it on!
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm
Hi meebos,
what a great extension – thanks a lot and all the best wishes for the future!
Thomas
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:05 pm
I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m really excited, and it sounds really awesome. Congratulations to everyone on Meebo anyway. I don’t use Firefox, but now that you got this extension up, I think I’ll start using.
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:09 pm
You guys just give and give and give…I can’t see Sandy as being that threatening though… she’s too sweet…
Thank you for another cool feature. Rock on!
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Another firefox extension which doesn’t work on firefox… on linux that is. Sux. Firefox is cross platform. If you can’t code a cross platform extension, please use an .exe instead.
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:48 pm
What’s so different about Gran Paradiso that no extensions work for it?
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:48 pm
It does not work on my brand new linux box, this make me so sad! And reading that this plugin also work on macOSX makes me damn crazy! I hope this problem will be fixed.
Anyway also “classic” meebo is great so, keep it up!
Thanks
The error is :
“meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:50 pm
This extension is awesome….. Meebo is becoming better day by day… Kudos to the team.
Just one crib being that the parent tab has to be open irrespective of using the sidebar,,which kinda makes the Meebo sidebar redundant. But i see in the first run Login window that you’re working on it. Looking forward to the tab-less sidebar usage…
once again,,,,,,Great Work…
October 22nd, 2007 at 11:52 pm
I loved the post comic presentation, kudos for distilling all that caffeine into code. From posts above it appears the sidebar is meant more to serve in addition to the main window {\tab} enabling to work while keeping an eye on the sidebar. I am very excited about this and looking forward to install iton my return home. Many thanks for all of your efforts.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:04 am
Dear Meebo,
May the force be with you.
I think this extension is cool. I have been a fan of Firefox for a long time now.
This extension makes both of you more dear to me than before.
I wish to congratulate all the Meebo Jedi Knights who have made this possible.
Cheers.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:07 am
Awesome extension…
Can see lot of improvements in meebo… I always love meebo…
Working fine with my vista. But not in my linux mandriva 2008.
Obviously meebo is better than gaim and so…
Hope very soon will get meebo sidebar in linux_x86..
All the best…!
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 am
Nice first release of the firefox extension. I echo many of the above suggestions, namely being able to just have the sidebar. Also really important is hiding offline buddies for sure. If I have my Meebo widget on my myspace page, does it now alert me when someone (anyone, not a buddy) lands on my page? Or is that still in the works?
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:22 am
woooohooooo!!
*
awesome guys!! I’m a bit of a firefox-extension-addict, so naturally I installed the Meebo one right away, but I think it’s great already! I’m always amazed by all the things you guys keep popping up, and still taking time to listen to users. keep it up!
for the future, I agree with what has been said already:
- collapsing offline contacts would be quite a plus,
- also being able to make each contact line smaller in the sidebar
about the main meebo tab, well it’s one tab in the 20 that I keep open, and I’m used to it so it’s less important to me ^^
congrats again, for the cool drawing skills too: that was a nice idea
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:29 am
nice work!
i guess you already got plenty of suggestions, but what about having a small (ff)window for every mesage box? this would only make sense if all those windows dont eat up too much memory, since i love meebo for being instantly there!
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:30 am
… sorry. It’s only the half … don’t work with LINUX. Why there is only a windows version?
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 am
Ditto to everything DJ said.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:55 am
Installed and deinstalled it again. Nice try, but useless if the meebo site still needs to be on. (Is there any purpose to the extension?)
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:00 am
ok, to be fair, it does actually make signing in a little bit easier. But that’s about it. And the notifications are a nice thing, however not what I want since I like the “non-obtrusive way” of meebo to handle “popping-up notifications” – well hid inside of a tab.
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:05 am
Hi,
i’ve got this error:
“meebo” couldt not be installed, because it is not compatible with
Firefox-Build Typ (Linux_x86-gcc3). …
Is this add-on not to use for Linux (Ubuntu 7.10)
Dietmar Mittner
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:16 am
Very nice extension … but pls. make it possible to close the tab with the next version
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:25 am
I felt very excited about this extension, but I got the same error about Linux_x86-gcc3
…would there be a Linux version anytime?
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:33 am
Same error here, too bad…
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:35 am
At first I was disappointed that it doesn’t work on Linux, but after reading the comments here I can’t really see the point of installing it anyway if you have to sign on in the main tab as well. However I’m sure that it is only a matter of time before that is addressed.
I’m getting a different error to others. I get
XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: chrome://mozapps/content/xpinstall/xpinstallConfirm.xul
Line Number 1, Column 1:
=”updateStrings” src=”chrome://mozapps/locale/extensions/update.properties”/>
^
I run Firefox 2.0.0.8 on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10.
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:46 am
It’s cool but lacks a number of necessary improvements:
-buddy list too large
-no way to hide offline buddies
-still needs a meebo tab. it should work directly inside the tab for a perfect meebo experience. that … gives me the idea to look for other firefox IM extensions….
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:13 am
thank you from all people messaging at work… like myself heheheheh
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:24 am
This is neat, but it does not work for me in the office as I can only access over https.
Not sure if anyone already asked for but can there be a switch that allows this (i.e. a secure connection over https).
Thanks!
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:29 am
Definitely a great concept, but as other’s said, not very useful until we can get rid of the Meebo tab.
LOVE the added alert at the bottom of the browser, as well as the bubbles that come up. Sometimes I completely miss that people have said something, and this should take care of that problem completely.
Right click support FTW!
When you ‘hide’ the extension, can there be a small bar on the left side of the browser that lets you show it again? I know you can click the icon at the bottom of the browser, but it feels more natural to click something near where you clicked to hide it. Not a big deal either way.
Also, for Meebo in general, PS3/PSP/BlackBerry support would be very, very appreciated!
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:34 am
Hi everyone… great extension, but i can’t use it @ work because of restrictions on the address http://www.meebo.com... I usually choose www31.meebo.com as a workaround
Can you add the feature to choose the address to call to use meebo with the add-on?
Tnx
Marco
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:51 am
Very cool!! Blackberry version and you have the market covered!
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:54 am
I love you. I really mean it.
Greatest features of meebo so far:
- Skins (Onyx for my taste, could be a little more Vista-style. I dislike Vista but i like the style.)
- I don’t get drown in ads.
Thanks for your great work.
Baumbart
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:55 am
It kinda works well. One thing i’ve noticed is that every time another site tries to show a popup window, Meebo grabs the focus back. Grrr!
Also agree with other commenters – surely there’s no real need for the Meebo site to be open at all if there’s a plug-in to handle it all?
I give it 7 out of 10 ;o)
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:58 am
I just want to echo Musmarc’s comment, I can’t access http://www.meebo.com
Being able to use an alternative address – or protocol (I normally use https://wwwl.meebo.com).
Cheers

Hi,
in french we say :
“ombritude est en ligne” not “ombritude devient en ligne”
Whatever, your extension is perfect, very good job !!!!
(if you need french help, i’m developper…)
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:02 am
Great job! But totally agree with DJ in comment #3 about the additional features.
Especially it would be great not to have the main meebo window open together with the sidebar.
Cheers!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:21 am
hm Firefox addons tells me meebo plugin is not compatible with version 2.0.0.8
How can I help it?
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:23 am
well…i’ve always ignored the meebo blogs when i log-in, but this one caught my eye, as a firefox user i thought i’d have a read of it & now i’ve installed the add-on, & i like it
keep up the good work!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:32 am
I was excited by the extension and installed it. Other than some issues already mentioned I liked it, especially the little message notifications on the bottom left. When I signed in afterwards the info box in the meebo tab said something about being able to pop out conversation windows and have them float over the Mozilla window. This turned out to just be the regular popping-out that creates a new window with the conversation. I think it would be awfully convenient if the sidebar allowed us to pop the conversations out of the meebo tab, but keep them in the same Firefox window. That way we could browse other websites and not have to go back to another tab or another window to continue our conversations.
Just an idea.
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:41 am
It’d be nice if the contacts in the sidebar appeared exactly as they do on the Buddy list.
Or rather, if the side bar *was* the Buddy list (with all its functionalities, buttons, groups, etc.).
Still, this addon simply rocks!!
Thanks!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:41 am
I’d like to be able to close the main meebo window and collapse offline buddies though.
Otherwise, good job!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:45 am
I agree with DJ wholeheartedly but would like to add that I’d like the sidebar to expand back out if you hover your mouse over the left of the browser!
Personally I use meebo at work, so anything that helps hide it the better
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:17 am
YOU GUYS ARE SOOOO AWESOME.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:50 am
Rocks.
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:01 am
Yesterday when i read about this plug in i immediately thought in install it on my pc at work, but i found this won’t work on LINUX, this is a great shame, because for what I’ve read many Meebo users are on Linux. And after reading the comments of DJ i think I’ll wait till the plug is more mature.
But it’s excellent that you guys made this great improvement, meebo for me is the great way to stay connected with all my friends at work. So thank you a lot for the great effort and keep going you all are in the right path.

YES!
The Jedi have returned!
As a LOOONG time practitioner of software support and maintenance (no, I’m not going to tell you how long) I am very impressed with this first release. I don’t believe I have seen such a flawless software release…ever.
For a second release this would be AWESOME!
For a first release this is INCREDIBLE!
I assume you will take the excellent suggestions above and merge them with the Meebo-force to produce an even awesomer lightsaber…add-on in the near future.
The only suggestion I have is to make the side bar behave list the buddy list in the Meebo page…but I expect that is already on your list.
Live long and prosper! (Peace and Long Life)

I too got a message saying the add-on is not compatible with Firefox 2.0.0.8.
Can you please look into this?

October 23rd, 2007 at 5:33 am
Good idea, but doesn’t cleanly install with Linux (because of Firefox build, same as people posted above). Linux and other OSs (other than Windoze) should be a significant concern, and hopefully you can get this resolved.
One word of advice from me would be to fix existing bugs in file transfers and such before investing money on new functionality that most won’t use anyway. Sure a new idea is always fun to expand on, but you might consider making existing code bulletproof before starting new projects. Reminds me of something Microsoft would do. Don’t get me wrong, you guys have something really good going here, keep it up.
If I want new bugs showing up to replace older bugs, and something that just doesn’t stay consistent and bug-free, I’d go back to Pidgin. Some use Meebo because they can get away with it at work (because it is a purely web-based client); I use Meebo because it works better than most open sourced MSN clients on the Linux platform, so keep finding those bugs and squashin’ ‘em!
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:38 am
works great. agree about the offline buddy collapse and will be better once can hide the open tab. otherwise. rawk. and great cartoon too
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:00 am
So I installed it and used it for a day or so. I wasn’t really happy with it because I still had to have meebo.com open to conduct my chit chats. It would’ve been better not to have the meebo.com open and just chat through your addon.
That’s just my two cents!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:01 am
Hey everyone, what a great idea I love it, and it’s working great so far. One minor issue that I’m noticing is that when I’m on another tab and that web page opens a pop-up window, I go right to the meebo page. Specifically, I’m using WebCT and reading student email and discussion posts. When I read one, WebCT opens another window (pop-up) and when that happens instead of being in the WebCT tab, I’m taken to the meebo tab, it seems that the app thinks any pop-up is a meebo IM, at least thats what I’m guessing.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:05 am
Great improvement, but this new innovation does not include multiple IM services. The software only allows sign on through one medium at a time. Still needs improvement.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:12 am
*gasp!* Nice!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:13 am
Some proxys in order to stop the messengers even deny the words meebo. So any conection using this word will be refused inmediatly. BUT, using the IP directions we can acces to meebo anyway, so it’s there a way to change the conection configuration in a way we can use the IP directions instead of the http://www.meebo.com directions??
thanks.. I hope you work on this..
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:13 am
I love this! I have been using meebo and firefox for quite a while, and this really rocks!!! Thanks guys!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:17 am
No linux support? Do people still do that?
Lame…
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:31 am
Same incompatibility message as others: ‘the add-on is not compatible with Firefox 2.0.0.8.’
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:33 am
How do we disbale these blogs? I’d be happy if we could just disable the lame blogs. Perhaps you tag blogs like this with lame.
Actually, that’s not much of a taxonomy. They’d all be tagged lame.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:35 am
Kudos to the dev team for this, I think it’s a great start! Ideally I’d like to be able to navigate away from the meebo page and still have the side bar. It would also be nice to hide offline contacts. You’re headed in the right direction…keep it up!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:37 am
Looks really great!
But how can I set it to target a different meebo server, say www38.meebo.com? I’m behind a firewall and the default meebo server is being blocked.
Thanks!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:37 am
Crashed twice right after I installed it. I still have to have the main window open, so no benefit for me right now. I may try again another time.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:37 am
YAY! I begin my dance! I am SO happy that I have been patient as I have been with you guys. This is what I needed! Thank you SO MUCH!
One little request. Can you exclude certain buddies that you don’t IM as much (unless they message you?) I have a bots list and I don’t often use them, but I keep them on hand. They have jumped to the top of my list, (rather obnoxiously) and I would like to not see the giant remnants of them there.
Thanks! FOR EVERYTHING You guys are SO my heroes! HOLLAR!
-teknikool
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:38 am
I also need to keep the main window open to make it work…
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:41 am
i like it but like many others have said i dont want to keep the main window open to use it. kinda defeats the purpose. great job anyway.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:43 am
Same comments as DJ. I immediately un installed it. I will wait until meebo gets it right!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:50 am
This sounded cool. However, I quickly found many of the issues mentioned by DJ earlier.
I’m not sure the point of the extension if the tab is also required, which I believe has also been mentioned several times.
One thing I do want to point out that I believe has not really been discussed is that when I log in with my Meebo account I only see 2 users from gmail and 1 from AIM. I was initially logged in normally via Meebo, so I knew this to be way low. I opened the Meebo tab that was created and still only saw the 3 people and no accounts listed for MSN or Yahoo. I closed the tab, which logged me off of the sidebar. I tried again… no go. I logged off the side bar, closed the tab, then logged in via Meebo normally in a new tab. This not only logged me in to all accounts and shows all my contacts online (there are many), but also logged me into the sidebar with the correct number of contacts.
The only “benefit” I see so far is that now I get a little notification window in the bottom right every time someone comes online, offline, or leaves a msg. Maybe that’s the point, but I’m not sure I’m all that thrilled about the multitude of notifications.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:53 am
Like kreedah said, (and maybe others)
It would be great to get all the fuctionnalities (groups, buttons…) that appear in the main Buddy List.
Anyway, this extension is amazing !
Go on with this FANTASTIC work you do.
We will never thank you enough
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:54 am
good job guys!
lookin fresh..
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:06 am
“meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3)
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:11 am
Its not working in Gutsy Gibbon ;-(
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:14 am
Caffiene is bad mmmkay.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:19 am
Awesome! I am so happy to have popup notifications at last! I have no sound card at work, and I have more than once found a message that had been waiting literally for hours…that won’t happen much anymore, I think.
I’ll add my voice to the clamor for a more compact and functional buddylist for the sidebar, and linux support (I haven’t tried this at home yet, but I am running Kubuntu there) for future releases.
I also noted that the notification popups I’m getting don’t come up cleanly; they’re hard to read until/unless I mouse over them. This may be a bad interaction with the Gtalk program, which I also use.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:24 am
Great, can’t find my word’s, sound very good, with some improvements, it will be great,
Always good work meebo team. !
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:28 am
ya know linux users are people too
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:31 am
Thanks for this cool feature! Its amazing!!!
But i dont wanna see my offline contacts!
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:33 am
mcgufbd Says:
The only “benefit” I see so far is that now I get a little notification window in the bottom right every time someone comes online, offline, or leaves a msg. Maybe that’s the point, but I’m not sure I’m all that thrilled about the multitude of notifications.
mcgufbd: Right-click on the meebo icon on the status bar and choose “Options…” Then uncheck all the things you don’t want notifications for.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:35 am
Is it possible to make the sidebar that loads on the left hand side moveable to the right hand side? Otherwise, I think it is coming along. You may consider adding the chat window within each screen name bar – it will pop open and closed when click or interacted with.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:38 am
Soooo….why not give the ability to have a Chat window inside the “buddy” list…and to minimize them inside that side frame in a super cool way…..kinda lame about the whole brings you to the tab…
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:39 am
Great idea guys, unfortunately when I log in using the add-on it doesn’t recognize my password. The original window works fine as usual.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:41 am
OH…btw this works in v 2.0.0.3 in Mac OS X with no problemo.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:44 am
Broken on my Firefox.
It says something about not working on “firefox_x86-gcc3″
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:44 am
Now how about something linux-x386 compatible
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:45 am
No sound either, w/ XP Pro. Bummer.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 am
Kinda agree with Mushmark,
I also have to use wwwm.meebo.com to connect.. and the extension works as long as I am on that location, but when I deselect the page, the extension visits the http://www.meebo.com site and that is smartfiltered:)
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:50 am
I am only downloading this because of the cartoon. *grin*
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:01 am
Due to this add on I’m now a meebo user. good job!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:05 am
Meebo and Firefox Rock! Great Work!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:08 am
The complete review about this excellent add-on is here on this blog post:
http://bokinfo.blogspot.com/2007/10/review-meebo-firefox-add-on.html
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:09 am
Sorry guys, but I uninstalled it. Not sure what the benefit is really. Also, it doesn’t support secure connections (https://wwwm.meebo.com/)
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:13 am
nice feature, but when I will finally get rid of my meebo-tab?
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:14 am
For those of you wanting a more traditional style while using meebo, there is a way. It will require the main window/tab to remain open, but if you have one window dedicated for meebo and another to browse in, no problems.
Grab the program called “4t Tray Minimizer Free” (search google). Then pop the buddy list out from the main window/tab. Using the minimizer, you can then throw meebo into the system tray, and then completely hide the main window (no task bar or system tray icon). It works well enough. You won’t get a flashing systray, but new message windows will open popped out similar to most other clients.
It’s quite handy. I used it while working for Best Western’s internet support.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:14 am
I am loving it, it was good before to just sit in a tab, but now it’s nice to see it at all times in my left sidebar, so I can better see who is on and not. Well done folks, always a wonderful product. I rave about it to everyone. Thanks meebo for another fine way to use your app.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:18 am
I was excited to see it, but like the others, I was disappointed that it didn’t run entirely in the sidebar. I also wish that it kept people sorted into their groups.
Nice start — I look forward to v1.1 . . .
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:18 am
I appreciate the effort, as I use Meebo for all of my IM needs. But it seems superfluous to have a side window for Meebo when I still have to dedicated a Firefox tab to the meebo app as well. When this is consolidated all down to simply just an Addon and I don’t have to dedicated any Firefox tabs to it I’ll be more inclined to use it. Thanks for the effort though, Meebo is very useful.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:23 am
Please add support for ubuntu gutsy =)
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:28 am
What you’re doing is GREAT!!. Keep up the good work, and thanks for make our lifes easier.. .
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:33 am
……ummm….random
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:37 am
this is so the r0x!
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:38 am
I agree with Dj, as well as the others who concurred with him – having the addon as nothing more than a buddy list frontend, rather than a full management system for meebo, is quite shoddy and useless – in fact, it even overwrites my current tab, overwriting what I’m currently looking at. -_-
The idea is promising, but it needs refining. I’m sure you guys can do it, though.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:41 am
Lol found the pics rather funny. Good job Meebo
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:45 am
This is bad:
“meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3)
Sorry guys, but you should consider that a lot of people use Meebo+Firefox under Linux… how is it possible that this extension isn’t cross-platform?
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:45 am
Alas, I too missed the Win32 only and got VERY excited.. then VERY disappointed… We don’t do windows….
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:46 am
Am I beating a dead horse?
“Meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
(I’m using Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy)
AWESOME idea though. The meebo dev team rocks. Rock the Zep, Paul.
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:58 am
Not compatible wiht Firefox 2.0.0.8
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:59 am
hola me gusta meebo
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:15 am
That was the greatest idea ever. Thank you guys for this.
Now it just needs to allow us to close the meebo webpage tab without having to go offline on messengers.
Congratulations! Meebo is the best
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:32 am
Linux support please!
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:34 am
Did someone say “awesome”?
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:35 am
Thank you so much for doing this! This will make life a lot easier
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:37 am
Another request for linux support
. And we can be the second most annoying group on the planet when it comes to bugging developers to support us. (Mac users still have us beat there)
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:45 am
Umm. Installed it, loved it until…. I noticed no 443 support.
uninstall time.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 am
Yeah, so … I’d like to use this in linux please? I read through the comments, and none of the authors have commented … but I know you guys love linux! Probably, you were just getting it out to the masses first.
My thoughts are in concert with everyone else – please incorporate the whole thing into the sidebar, and from what I heard, make the text tinier. But it sounds great, and I’ll use it when I can (when it works for linux)!
Title: Incompatible Extension
! “meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86_64-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:04 am
Other than that, thanks for being so awesome, meebo!
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:08 am
I love the alert box! But I find the actual sidebar kinda of useless as the main tab still must be running. Also need that linux support so I can use it at home.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:11 am
Suuuuuuuppeeeerrr!!! Didn’t check how it works yet, hope everything will be as fine as usual for meebo
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:15 am
This whole meebo idea was totally awsome!
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:20 am
Is there going to be a meebo facebook app soon?
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:23 am
Yes! This is what I’ve been looking for!
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:39 am
Would it be possible to keep the sidebar open when I close the meebo tab?
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:48 am
Good extension I think. Won’t install on linux (Ubuntu). Don’t know if it will work with ff3. You need to recompile and make installable on linux (see XPCOM ABI)
Mike.
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:56 am
Um…when I click “Install the meebo extension” absolutely nothing happens. Like not even an error message. Nothing. So sad!
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:08 am
Great job!
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:09 am
It would be great if the notification pop up stayed up until you saw it. It you step away from your computer a moment and come back, that would let you know that you got a message!
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:12 am
OPERA FTW, HOW ABOUT SOME DECENT COMPATIBILITY FIRST? Especially for the proven best browser, just cuz there’s a bigger following on FF doesn’t mean it’s better, majority of browsers still use IE, but we all know it’s the farthest behind.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:17 am
the popup notifications don’t work well.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:42 am
Tried it at work on Win XP. Thought it was fantastic. Rushed home to try it here … only to find it doesn’t work on Linux! Why didn’t you say it was Windows only?! I was expecting that the FF extension would make me switch to Meebo for my home IM, but… ho-hum, carry on using Kopete I suppose.
(Almost as important as getting it working for Linux: get it working without the need to keep the Meebo tab open. That would be heaven.)
Steve (on Kubuntu 7.10, seeing as you ask).
xx
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:44 am
Sigh.
Ubuntu cannot use such an extension.
The Linux penguin is sad.
I know these things.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:45 am
Have you guys thought about creating a desktop application with Adobe AIR? I think this would somewhat defeat the purpose of having meebo, but then also give it’s users more options. I would most likely use the desktop version of meebo more than the web version. Just thought I’d pass on the idea.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:49 am
I hate how much I love you.
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:51 am
No linux
That stinks. I’m left out in the cold…
Oh well.
October 23rd, 2007 at 12:41 pm
lol great!!!!!:) thanks meebo!! hahahah sooo i was reading this and it was soooo koool okay sooo like awesome byi keep up the goood work meebo…….caria
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:01 pm
Why come up with an extension that does not work with the latest release of Firefox?!!?!
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Why come up with an extension that does not work with the latest version of Firefox?!?!?
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:07 pm
The first comment says it all. as does the third to last.
Linux support!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:16 pm
awsome but i have some irony for you
i clicked on it and my firefox puzzle piece popped up to say “firefox will not allow you this site to install” hahaha of course i changed settings but .. funny none the less haha
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:20 pm
It makes me very sad that this is Win32 only. :[
I agree with all of the other people saddened by no linux support. :[
October 23rd, 2007 at 1:33 pm
Love it though alas is there a way to have it not auto sigh on to were you have to log in all the time I need some security. When I know that then I will install it otherwise I guess I try it and if it dont do all i want I’ll just remove it later. it is a great move with the first atempt either way.

October 23rd, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Apparently you guys are too busy drawing comics to develop a PASSWORD CHANGE feature…
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:01 pm
It’d be good to support firefox for linux too
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:23 pm
Awsome!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Please, please listen to DJ’s suggestions, with those it will make this extension MUCH MUCH better!
October 23rd, 2007 at 2:59 pm
hehehe…very good news and awesome way to explain it…..thanks!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Belllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!
or better: wonderffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuulllllllllllllll!
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:18 pm
hi,
guess what , i installed the add on a day even before the blog was posted. was just doing a random search on firefox addons and found this.. for me there was no need for the blog to get hook up to this addon.. as i was already hooked..:). this is quite innovative approach, keep creating the magic..
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Hi all. Appreciate all the support for my suggestions. I just wanted mention that I believe the extension might have a memory leak as well. I’ve had FF open for approx. 24 hours with minimal surfing (went out last night and worked all day today), and it’s up to almost 500MB. I normally don’t see that kind of memory usage until FF has been open for over a week.
Is anybody else seeing that behavior?
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Great! But I can’t use also
Yeah… another Linux user here…
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:33 pm
’tis a sad sad day when so many folk get so excited over something so unimpressive, infabulous and just shoddily put together… ’specially knowing that it took “crazy marathon coding sessions” over “weeks”; meaning the opportunity cost of this extension is *still not getting actually useful features long-ago and repeatedly requested*.
meebo is getting more obnoxious and dissappointing all the time, catering to the clueless… much like that old “M” company up in Redmond (are they still operating [pun intended] up there??!!)
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
listen to me know and believe me later…
Open it up. Open it up. Open it up. Give us an API and the community will do things you haven’t imagined, and won’t.
October 23rd, 2007 at 3:52 pm
Hey, thanks for the ff extension! It is my main browser for personal tasks on my laptop. Keep up the good work!
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:01 pm
**wipes tear from face** Wont work with **sniff** Swiftfox in Linux **cries**
Oh well I have evil XP at work. Will test it out tomorrow.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:16 pm
The Forest Park Public Library loves this new extension! Thanks for your continual hard work and innovative ideas.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:27 pm
do the opera browswer next.
October 23rd, 2007 at 4:52 pm
@GnuOwned
Still doesnt work for me on ubuntu gutsy…..
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:03 pm
When i first saw it was like…. YES!
but then you still need to keep the main page open
i thought u could launch a separate im window
but no u still have to have a tab with meebo
PLEASE WORK ON HAVING ALL THE FEATURES OF THE MEEBO PAGE PACKED INTO THE SIDEBAR, AND DON’T MAKE USERS HAVE TO KEEP THE MAIN PAGE OPEN AND LAUNCH SEPARATE IM WINDOWS OUTSIDE OF THE BROWSER for convenience!
i know u can…..
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:19 pm
Well, that was different … rather entertaining … downright creative. I like to see that.
Carnegie Mellon University Libraries may adopt this soon.
October 23rd, 2007 at 5:57 pm
for some reason i’m having issues with firefox trying to block all of the new messages i receive. i have the settings set to allow popups from wwwl.meebo.com/# but they still keep getting lost in popup blocker land. any hints?
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:01 pm
Hi There! I love the notification, but the sidebar seems difficult for me to manage without my groups. I have one request, can we please change “im_handle came online” and “im_handle went offline” to im_handle “IS” ?
Great job Meebo team, I love your product!!
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:09 pm
“What’s the point of having a sidebar, if you have to keep the Meebo window open in a separate tab?”
Quoted for truth.
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:21 pm
This is an excellent start. Can’t wait for your next release. My wish list:
- The aforementioned meebo.com tab issue.
- Setting skins, as on the meebo console page.
- Organizing contacts into groups, with collapsible controls (including offline users).
- Add / Remove / Group Chat controls.
- Pop out of sidebar into new window (I like the floating contact list).
Great first release! Can’t wait to check out your next release!
Cheers
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:30 pm
doesn’t work on linux
October 23rd, 2007 at 6:36 pm
Hello, Firefox is telling me that it’s not working for Firefox version 2.0.0.8. What needs to be done? Thanks for your time!

October 23rd, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Another linux user here, perhaps you should put a note on the firefox page about being windows only, before I bother to try and install it.
You arent making toolbars for Internet Explorer here, firefox implies open architecture.
I have never ever gotten that error ever before on firefox, and I run loads of extensions.
October 23rd, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Linux support ASAP please. i understand it’s not the first thing on your mind but it should be the third…
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:42 pm
Agree…more useful features that go beyond what the webpage does would be nice.
Is this extension also the reason why I keep getting logged out of Meebo since Monday?
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:46 pm
First FF plugin I have ever used out of many that works on Win, Mac but not linux… I do understand this is a free service but the point provided about leading us to the water just to realize its not safe for everyone to drink is a waste of our time, your bandwidth and leaves a frustrated feeling with the user… Just annotate (sadly and embarrassingly) Meebo can only understand/support Windows and Mac, Linux rebels use pidgin instead…. /S
October 23rd, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Haha, nice comic. Your four are AWESOME!! I’m lovin’ the new plugin! ^_^
October 23rd, 2007 at 9:56 pm
Hi it doesn’t work for solaris x86. I use the solaris nevada on my laptop. Any ports in the near future?
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:07 pm
ok so…. I concur with seanhar…. add linux biotch =)…
October 23rd, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Mmmmmmmhhhh….. :-w
Waiting to enjoy it on my computer, Linux…
Anyway, Great improvement, team!
but still, other TODOs are waiting…
keep the pace on..
October 23rd, 2007 at 11:08 pm
Nice idea.
All-in-one sidebar compatibility will be welcome. I use tiny menu, so do not have the navigation toolbar visible. Even when I unhide it, I can’t see any meebo icon added to it. Bug? Statusbar icon is visible, though.
It’ll be nice if I can get an icon which I can drag to my AiOS and have meebo with rest of my sidebars.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:16 am
tks guys, this add on it is very handy, keep working, you’re doing a great job, i’m waiting for meebo mobile
October 24th, 2007 at 1:08 am
At first I thought what’s the point? And then I saw the toast when someone logged off and OK, that’s cool.
October 24th, 2007 at 1:16 am
Can’t wait for the linux version.
Ruckus
Fedora 7 (8 on 08NOV)
October 24th, 2007 at 1:19 am
I get a “Access denied” and “File not found or access denied” message on the page http://wwwl.meebo.com/firefox/
What’s wrong?
October 24th, 2007 at 1:26 am
I found a way to change the meebo site referred by the plugin!
Just type about:config and change the parameter meebo.domain to your preferred address!
The problem, however, still remains for me: i need to access meebo in https, to avoid firewall rules
Let me know if you can make the upgrade
tnx
October 24th, 2007 at 1:40 am
Ok, this is one of the neatest first-release apps EVER!!! It lets me monitor who’s online while continuing my work.
I would love to see collapsible groups.
I would also love to see Linux support as that is my main desktop.
Just my 2 cents.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:36 am
Great job but can´t sign in from the sidebar- only from main window.
October 24th, 2007 at 2:49 am
Guys,
Kickass extension. Awesome coding job. Hate to do this to u guys but this is a problem. Can’t be invisible after you install the extension on Yahoo and AOL. The biggest USP of meebo, to me, was the ability to get offline on AOL. I hated each moment of the uninstall process but I had no other go.
Guys, help!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:26 am
That was GREAT!!! Thank you for sharing more of your personalities with us. Being that you are so personal with us, you will have more loyal fans.
Take care!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:26 am
Sweet!
October 24th, 2007 at 3:53 am
This is great. And the comic is the nerdiest thing I’ve read all week. congrats :p
October 24th, 2007 at 4:40 am
Though, personally, I would like to have something like this….but then the immediate reaction is, why don’t we close the meebo main tab ?
That is what the rest of the folks are saying….
On the other hand, something like this is *not good* (in the long run) for meebo. For e.g. now your users are going to expect …that hey you can do this..why dont you close that main window and just do it via sidebar…
so you end up *losing* a lot of real-estate !!! earlier you had the whole window space and you could have used it effectively for ads/more content…but with the side-bar you would give up all the real-estate on the users screen…
how did seth allow something like this ? or maybe your plans are bigger than what I can imagine…..
October 24th, 2007 at 5:40 am
I totally agree with DJ. I really thought, and was hoping for, it is a (real) firefox add-in. So, i dont need to have the browser window open. That would be awesome!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:44 am
Just a pointless post saying Nice work!
October 24th, 2007 at 7:03 am
Same problem here…does not work on Kubuntu 6.10…..got it working in the office with Win XP….but not at home where i m using linux…..expecting some more effort from u guys….
October 24th, 2007 at 7:14 am
Per the second comment on this thread (http://blog.meebo.com/?p=368#comment-174608) – all those requests and carry over the grouping functionality available in the main window buddy list. Good stuff overall though. Not many tweaks needed to really blow it out.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:21 am
While I agree with some of the bigger concerns expressed on here, I’d like to point out [and sorry if someone else already did, I didn't read through everything posted] that when I get the pop ups, I can only SEE them clearly if I hover my mouse over them. Mabe it’s just my computer, though, lol.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:28 am
Very cool…although for some reason, it keep ‘forgetting’ my password. I’ve had to reset it unnecessarily twice now in the 36 hours I’ve had this installed….annoying. I like having it though…it beats the other self-put-together solution I had.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:40 am
Here’s one more request for Linux (ubuntu 7.04) support.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:48 am
When do you plan a Linux version (Ubuntu feisty-fawn/Debian)?
Also, can you have it run ONLY as a sidebar?
Just asking :0
Looks nice tho
October 24th, 2007 at 7:57 am
sweeeeeet
October 24th, 2007 at 8:07 am
Very cool but very heavy!
Yes ok I have a lot of extensions and I’m behind a strong proxy/firewall.
But switch from from one tab to others is very slow.
Good work!
October 24th, 2007 at 8:18 am

October 24th, 2007 at 8:18 am
eai maluco
October 24th, 2007 at 8:25 am
im very dissapointed
firefox 2.0.0.8 which just got installed along with the meebo extension is not letting this work, it says it isnt supported !! guys pleaseeeeeeeeee update it asap !!! i want to try it !!
October 24th, 2007 at 8:26 am
Great idea, but the execution (at least on my machine) is clunky. Mac OSX 10.3.9, Firefox 2.0.0.7. It takes a long time to sign-in, for one thing.
Biggest gripe: with this plug-in, incoming messages no longer give sound notifications. The tab still flashes, but the sound is off. (yes, my system sound is on.)
So I uninstalled it. The main Meebo browser window just works better for me.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:44 am
I like the new add-on. I hope that in future versions that my sidebar list of offline friends/buddies, etc can be hidden in some fashion as it can from the main site. Thanks for all that you done and keep up the great work!
October 24th, 2007 at 9:06 am
Just curiously, how can you remove this add-on? The notifications are WAY too much. WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY too much.
October 24th, 2007 at 9:07 am
Here one more Linux User say…
Please, Linux support…
Do not ignore us.

October 24th, 2007 at 9:33 am
Excellent work as usual guys! thanks
October 24th, 2007 at 9:49 am
Great job guys, but like DJ said, if I need the main website open, that’s almost like the same…
I thought i would be free of the main site, just like the real msn, that would be cool.
Hope to see this coming true real soon.
Keep it up
October 24th, 2007 at 9:55 am
With tabbed browsing and the inability to close the meebo browser window, this all seems a bit pointless.. why not just leave meebo open in a seperate tab?
I always thought releasing a product that is fundamentally flawed was stupid, and i’d say having no point is a fundamental flaw.
Why not wait until you had a version where you don’t need the meebo browser window open?!
October 24th, 2007 at 10:43 am
It seems like the developers are on the right track with this, but I agree with DJ and everyone else who wondered what’s the point w/o losing the Meebo tab, being able to collapse the list of those not signed in, etc. I’m going to uninstall as well until/if this functionality is added.
October 24th, 2007 at 10:53 am
Great idea – we were looking forward to rolling it out to our staff! One minor problem – it wont work under Ubuntu and Firefox. We have no windows boxes – we ONLY use FOSS products so its a pity to see that we will have to wait for you to make it linux compatible.
October 24th, 2007 at 11:38 am
Thanks. You’re doing a damned good job.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:05 pm
Hey all, (esp. those using linux) You can have meebo in your side bar only (no extra tab) by doin the following: 1. Open the meebo page in a normal tab 2. Bookmark the page 3. Right click on the bookmark and then click on properties. 4. At the bottom of the properties window there is a check box that says “Load this bookmark in the sidebar.” After following these steps, clicking on the bookmark will open Meebo in the sidebar.
October 24th, 2007 at 12:10 pm
I love the extension it adds so much more to meebo and is nice to have it on firefox!
Thanks for the amazing work =]
October 24th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
I’m loving the extension, thanks guys!
October 24th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
I will add my voice to the throngs that need this to work in linux. With 2 suse machines, a redhat server and a mint linux I use Meebo for everything. I would love for this extension to work. As is, the phat man is just sad

sweet comic!
i just wish that the Meebo tab didn’t have to be open for this amazing add-on to work.

Awesome plugin!
October 24th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
downloaded it, took one look at my buddy list and how it’s alphabetized and how the groups are lost and hated it. HOW DO I UNINSTALL????????????????
October 24th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
Genius? Wow . . ….
Thank you guys
October 24th, 2007 at 3:47 pm
I dont get it !?!?
October 24th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
What DJ said.. plus it would be nice if I could say logged on with the main window closed and the meebo sidebar hidden… that way I can surf at full screen until I’m chatting with someone…. even cooler if the chat screens could be a tab in firefox.. turning firefox into a cross-service, web-based chat client..
October 24th, 2007 at 4:17 pm
Nice concept, but it isn’t compatible with SeaMonkey. Makes it difficult to use when I won’t use Firefox because of … limitations in capabilities.
October 24th, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Add-on idea is just great, but here are a few enhancements (other the ones mentioned by DJ right at the start) that I want to suggest:-
1] Reduce the size of the meebo icon right on top in the sidebar
2] When users come online or go offline insted of showing “XXX has come online” or “XXX went offline” it would be better is there are appropriate icons in it’s place. That way we don’t need to read it to figure out what the message means.
3] Display contact details and other info on placing cursor over the contact id, this is present in the normal meebo site and needs to be added to the extension too.
4] The contact name/id repeats in the bottom popup window. Get rid of one of them.
5] Display contacts groupwise as in actual meebo.
Great job guys…
October 24th, 2007 at 4:32 pm
For those on Linux wanting the extension. Here’s my modified xpi that I’m using with no problems. I haven’t tried all the features and I did run into one bug (I left clicked the icon in the status bar and it froze firefox), but for the most part it’s great! Developers please let me know if this is a problem and I will take down the link.
Just download the file, then drag it onto a firefox window.

I don’t really like the comic lol ik its about the firefox thing but the characters look pretty stupid no effence just sayin I LOVEEEE Meebo Im addicted pretty much though
(plz no bad comments about this one)
October 24th, 2007 at 4:59 pm
Hello, I think this is a great add-on on firefox, but I would like to see the email of the contact when i place the cursor above a contact in the side bar. It’s the only comment I have, beside that is really cool.
Keep the Great Work!!
October 24th, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Also,
What is wrong?
When I log onto my AIM and i look at my profile when I move ontop of my name on buddy list it says the wrong time and my computer doesnt have the incorrect time on it!!
thanx!!
October 24th, 2007 at 6:11 pm
What?…no linux support? VERY disappointing Meebo. I believed in you, and you’ve crushed me.
… You haven’t even responded to the comments wondering why there isn’t any support. Feeling a bit kicked to the curb guys. At least shed some light for us.
Other than this, much love for Meebo, Keep up the good work, but try and remember the open community.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:14 pm
Great!!!!!!, just Great….. you are like my heroes of coding!!!!!…. my respect for you and your great project…. what DJ says it would be great, a know that some of us can be so annoying and picky with your work, but is because we like what you are doing!!!, and some of us would like to be more involve. But anyway keep the good job!!!!!!
October 24th, 2007 at 7:13 pm
it would be even greater if you guys could let us get rid of the mandatory meebo tab in firefox when i use this add-on. but anyway it’s really cool~~~!
thanks~
October 24th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
To: Brad Pitcher
Commenting your XPI modification on http://www.divshare.com/direct/2483175-d56.xpi. It is a good job, meebo had been opened on my sidebar successfully, BUT my firefox crashed 2 seconds later and the uptime of my firefox never reached 2 seconds for the following startups. It reported: Program Exception”. I’m using Linux CentOS 5.
Above all, I appreciate your concern to us, the open community, and of course your skill. That’s why I’ll be waiting for your next update.
October 24th, 2007 at 7:44 pm
This is too cool…I agree with Alec about the mandatory Meebo tab, but other than that, this is spot on! Well DONE Meebo-heads!
October 24th, 2007 at 8:35 pm
I like it, but it gave me problems trying to sign on after installation. It would just flash and do nothing. I ended up closing the add-on and opening it up again. It works now.
October 24th, 2007 at 9:23 pm
HAHA NO Linux support. I’ll stick to Pigdin It’s faster and has MyspaceIM
October 24th, 2007 at 11:31 pm
Am not sure if this is part of this new feature, but i really loved the pop ups. Now I know the status of my friends and whenever i get a message.
Congratulations to the Meebo Team!
October 25th, 2007 at 2:34 am
hi meebo team..
it was a great pleasure for all of us who is the fan of meebo 2 use mozilla wit meebo..
but thr is still some sort is missing..
like if u can make the side bar in mozilla 2 restrict 2 chatting..so that thr is no need of adding extra tab in mozilla…r u can also add the feature of mail box in the various network..
like wat the yahoo n gmail did in the past days..
well watever be…all the very best 4 ur new extension…
hope it will definately meet all user demand..!!
October 25th, 2007 at 4:45 am
Hey there,
it’s not working with Solaris 10 on X86 Systems !
please add it soon.
Thanks for such a great tool.
October 25th, 2007 at 5:54 am
I use meebo at work where most IM clients are blocked, and this is the best thing that could happen for me! I really like the alert windows that appear now. Thanks Meebo!
October 25th, 2007 at 6:10 am
Another who is disappointed by lack of Linux support (Also my main OS)..
..but the win32 version does work fine, so props for that, now code some more
October 25th, 2007 at 6:18 am
I found several problems with this new extension. First, there is no option to enable https. Next, when you enable ‘Show my windows and tabs from last time’ in Startup under the Main tab in Options, it opens a new meebo tab causing a hanging sign on. Finally, it would be nice if the extension worked in Linux or at least some warning that it is only compatible with Windows.
October 25th, 2007 at 6:25 am
Linux support would be really cool..
October 25th, 2007 at 6:35 am
Yeahh… this rules!!!
but, the great thing in Meebo is yours singularity,
i mean, hes very easy to hyde when we want to…
and this new add-on loose this capacity…
but, anyway, its a greaT job guys…
thnx
October 25th, 2007 at 6:38 am
I have no problem with requiring meebo to be open in one of the tabs (what’s one more when I have twenty open already?), although more functionality in the buddy list would be nice.
In particular, I would like to have the list of contacts back in the folders… I like the folders and I use them a lot… I miss them. *sniff* lol
Also, perhaps the pop-up messages could be a little longer, or even better, if I could set how long they would stay up for…
And, as I’ve said before, I wish I could manage my folders a little better. For example, I can move a contract that’s at the bottom of my offline list into another folder. I wish I could choose to have no offline folder and instead see all my contacts in their appropriate folder. Maybe you could solve that problem within this extension?
Excellent work though… This solves a lot of my issues and makes me like meebo even more! Keep it up!
October 25th, 2007 at 7:36 am
LOL… very nice story about the creation of this glorious Firefox Extension. Just a few observation:
If for some reason I have a blocked contact, the extension always show me the advice that this blocked contact is “caming online” or “going offline”. So I think, that if the contact is blocked maybe the extension shouldn’t show me any advice.
Another observation: I would like to filter the list of contacts, like “show only online contacts”.
Anyway, the extension is here to stay… it is very useful, Excellent Work. Thanks!!!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:12 am
A couple suggestions (didn’t read through all the others, but I’m guessing they’ve already been mentioned)
1. I’d like to see the “toolbar” on the right side of the firefox window. It’d be nice to be able to move it from side-to-side to meet user preference.
2. I’m curious as to why it still requires the tab to be open w/ meebo on it? It’s nice that I can hide/unhide the toolbar when I have other firefox windows open when not using tabbed browsing, but it doesn’t seem like there’s much benefit to have a meebo tab open with the toolbar on the left and the regular meebo contact list in the window on the right.
3. Groupings are lost? This isn’t a major issue, but given the number of contacts some may have, this could be a point of concern.
Beyond that, I think it’s a great idea. I’m glad to see it built and to be using it.
Thanks for the hard work everyone!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:22 am
i think thats really stupid.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:38 am
That’s some nice comics you have there!
October 25th, 2007 at 8:51 am
Awesome.
I agree with those above:
– need groups, ability to hide offline contacts
– would like not to have meebo tab
And then sprinkle some more awesome on top of it all.
October 25th, 2007 at 8:55 am

had to uninstall.
after the automatic sign-in happened today, every time I clicked on a link that opened a new window, it would minimize the new window and take me to the regular meebo tab. odd.
it’s a neat idea though.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:26 am
Guys seriously, you have to cut the Meebo team some slack. How much do you pay to have this service? NOTHING! So just shut up and stop complaining how it doesn’t support Linux or how the tab needs to stay open. Have patience.
October 25th, 2007 at 9:35 am
Cmon add linux support , the operating system list in the data tree in the xpi does not include linux i added it and tried to compile it but it gave me an unsigned error , linux support can be difficult ? can it
October 25th, 2007 at 10:35 am
Having some issues on Mac OS 10.4.10 with FF 2.0.0.8. The popup notifications take focus away from the browser (unlike WinXP). Meaning I have to switch apps back to FF for me to respond or do anything else in FF. Additionally, one time someone sent me an IM and the FF window hid itself. Tried to hide and show again but wouldn’t work. I tried to force-quit but then I got the confirmation message and viola browser window showed. But clicking either Okay or Cancel hid the browser window again :/.
FWIW, I also run Camino when running FF. Not sure if that could cause a conflict.
Works great on XP though, but needs some polishing for Mac OS X.
October 25th, 2007 at 11:07 am
Until recently I used meebo as a back up to Pidgin or Trillian. Now that you’ve created the FireFox extension I will use meebo as my “first choice” multiprotocol IM client. Keep up the great work and great communication!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:31 am
Since having it installed Firefox opens clicked additional windows in background and brings the meebo tab a selected top one. Apart from that a really great idea to have it working like this. Thanks for the extra work!

Yeah, same x86 Linux error. I’d love to be able to use this without having to run Firefox in WINE, Win4Lin or VMWare.
Please keep me updated.

I am using openSUSE 10.3 with Firefox 2.0.0.8. I agree with all the linux users out there. It would be REALLY AWESOME if you made the Add-On Linux friendly
October 25th, 2007 at 9:54 pm
The extension looks awesome, although I’m a linux user so only have screenshots to go from.
Please please please can we get linux support?!
October 25th, 2007 at 9:58 pm
Great job guys! I definitely like where you are going with this. I’m not sure if this is an issue caused by the extension or by firefox itself, but when I have the extension running with firefox my memory usage for the program goes through the roof. With about a half dozen tabs open, including meebo, firefox was using about 120,000K or more. Can’t wait to see what will happen with future revisions! Keep up the great work guys. I don’t even use the chat clients anymore because of your site!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
Brilliant work, and brilliantly presented…the comic strip…loved it..
I agree with DJ, its not a good thing to have the mainpage open…try to make it limited to sidebar itself….that ‘d be fantabulous!
October 25th, 2007 at 11:20 pm
ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!!
Ok, caps off now.
I love this add-on. I haven’t had the memory problems listed, so far it has had no performance effects on me. Can’t wait ’til you get it adjusted so we don’t have to have a tab open. Not that I’m opposed to having a meebo tab open, but ever less tab I have to keep open, the better for me aesthetically.

October 26th, 2007 at 4:23 am
have big issues with this one…
sounds like a great idea but has locked up my machine more than once when the popup notification is trying to open at the same time as a functional window (like browsing for files to upload) Assume this might be related to the memory usage, but not entirely convinced as the popup notifications aren’t displaying entirely correctly either.
would also make sense to me to have the sidebar change into the sidebar of the meebo window.
Would seriously advise waiting for version 1.1
October 26th, 2007 at 6:11 am
Very nice indeed… however I never get a notification when someone comes online. I only get a notification when someone goes offline… Not super practical. Otherwise, I like it!

October 26th, 2007 at 6:49 am
Excellent work. Did notice two issues when using.
1) It significantly slowed down my work PC (3ghz Windows XP w/ 2gig ram)
2) When a popup (unrelated to meebo) would open, the meebo window would come into focus (even if it was minimized and/or on a different tab). Quite annoying.
Love meebo and all that its done. I’m a software developer for web content as well, so I know you guys have an awesome job doing what you do (and you do it well).
Thanks.

I use Ubuntu Gutsy (7.10) and I don’t understand why the firefox extension does not support Linux. It is the first firefox extension I have tried which needs some specific OS. Frankly I am rather disappointed, because I always thought the greatest advantage with Meebo was it’s OS independence.

I like the idea, but there is some flakiness here and there. Want some help identifying the departures from perfection? Got that covered?
October 27th, 2007 at 6:13 pm
did manage to install it on windows and worked nice, but as A LOT of people already said it’s meaningless if we still have to open a tab for meebo’s page. i think that this is a GREAT beginning for this extension and as you always listen your users i can only wait for this to become perfect.
oh, didn’t work on linux for me either….

I second that about logging in invisible. I’d like to log in automatically on startup but be invisible.

but you guys need to get it out on internet explorer?
October 28th, 2007 at 12:23 pm
wow thats really stupid..you can do better :[
October 28th, 2007 at 12:24 pm
Happy to see it, but for some reason there is no option for sorting my contacts in groups which makes it very hard to find them. please try to fix this for the future.
October 28th, 2007 at 12:36 pm
I downloaded it then uninstalled it because I had to keep the meebo tab opened. It’s the same as having meebo opened in a tab and I’d rather not have to use a tab when i’m getting the sidebar. It just seems unnecessary. Can that be fixed?
October 28th, 2007 at 1:01 pm
why cant you make one for internet explorer??!?!??!?!?! you should make one for internet explorer becuase although alot of ppl use firefox, alot of ppl use Internet Explorer.
October 28th, 2007 at 1:58 pm
This extension is great so far but i have a complaint…
I would like it where it doesn’t require the main meebo window or tab open and the ability to message from it by itself.
October 28th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
It seems rather pointless to have to have a meebo tab open, along with the sidebar? That sort of defeats the purpose.

Congratulations to the Meebo and Firefox team. I just have a few suggestions. While this side bar helps, I think it still needs improvement. Such as:
The abillity to collapse the offline users and even have the same group divisions as in the regular IM window, ending the need of the regular window for sidebar users.
I don’t know if it has something to do with my computer, but I can’t see the buddy icon from my list. Everyone is able to see my picture, but I can’t see theirs.
Study the possibility of future webcam, microphone usage.
And perhaps, the users of the sidebar could have the option to eliminate the meebo link and open the chats with a pop-up.
Just ideas to make Meebo the definitive choice for IM. Keep on the good work!
October 29th, 2007 at 5:52 am
Nice idea on the extension, but it is very very lame. You can’t sort the buddies by group. WTF? You can’t right click on a buddy. You need to add some BASIC features to this plugin. It should be able to do everything the main buddy list window can do. You should no have released it yet, it’s so lame right now, it makes you guys look bad.
October 29th, 2007 at 6:18 am
Nice job with the new meebo firefox edition!
I agree with DJ and an other thing i saw with the new meebo is that the conference mode doesn’t work with the firefox edition which is quiet upsetting. the rest is werry good! congratulations!

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5700
Meebo has responded here stating
“We’ve run into a few issues with different builds of Firefox on Linux, look for an update in the future.”
I would only add *all builds of Firefox on Linux* as Linux is not included at all in the install.rdf of the xpi…

I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on Windows XP Professional Ver. 2002, SP 2. The Meebo add on was installed properly, but logging on to Meebo using the installed add on (which appeared as an icon in my Firefox navigation tool bar) took longer than usual and slowed down my browsing.
Is it normal?
October 30th, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Great to hear that they intend to make it work on Linux, though
I’ve been feeling a bit ashamed of my earlier post that sounded (on revisiting it) rather negative – I hadn’t meant it to be!

Love the plugin, can’t wait for a “no tab required” version.
One little thing I want to mention is the use of “came online”. I understand meebo is different and wants to stay different, but I have to admit that I cringe when I see my mom or my sister log in and it says “mom came online” or “sabrina came online” (my sister) You might think I’m perverted… but that’s what usability studies are for.

November 5th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
I have been using the extension for some time and so far I’m pretty happy with it (although I do have to say at the moment it serves as a “always-on-top buddy list” which I can see who’s online). I did wrote my own experience in my own blog, which you can check it out here:
http://digitalbluewave.blogspot.com/2007/10/meebo-firefox-extension.html
I did forget to mention a quite annoying quirk that if you use the auto sign-in feature, it’ll always open a new tab loading Meebo’s site. This is quite annoying because I personally use the auto-load previous session feature in Firefox: which make it always end up with two tabs loading Meebo and I have to take the trouble to close one of them. Hopefully that get resolved soon (but then again, if you can do away with not needing the Meebo website to send messages that’d be top priority
).
Great work and really hope to see the next version of it soon!
November 7th, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Just a request for a feature: if I click the close “X” on the pop-up, allow this to act as a “read” (i.e. the window bar does not continue to flash). Also, can I increase the size of the popup bar?
December 8th, 2007 at 12:19 pm
In the reverse of an essay I will put my killer point first. This plugin, which I love even though it doesn’t support my native OS, should be available for Linux because it will allow the “Android” phone to fully use this site. If this is as big as it sounds it would do you well to be supporting trend-setters.
Support for Debian would be great, as it would allow the Ubuntu, N700/N800/N810, and future MIDs to run Meebo well.
December 12th, 2007 at 7:03 am
Any word on getting it to work on Linux?
December 18th, 2007 at 3:15 am
Here is how I got the Meebo extension to work with Linux.
1. Download the meebo-1.0-fx.xpi
2. Unzip it into some good directory
3. Edit the install.rdf file and add the line: Linux somewhere close to the other platform definitions.
4. Copy the entire content of the “Darwin” subdirectory in the directory “platform” to a “Linux” subdirectory in the same directory (”platform”). You should get the following layout:
“platform/WINNT”
“platform/Darwin”
“platform/Linux”
5. Zip the new structure into a new .xpi file (maybe call it: meebo-1.0-linux.xpi)
6. Open the new .xpi file in firefox and allow it to get installed.
7. Restart firefox and enjoy the meebo-plugin.
Tried and tested on Ubuntu: Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) x86
December 18th, 2007 at 3:19 am
Sorry the comment didn’t get the entire definition of the targetPlatform.
Should read a little more like this:
Linux
Just remove all the whitespaces from this one….:)

How about an auto-reconnect option when meebo gets disconnected for some reason?
Thanx
February 5th, 2008 at 6:52 am
Very Clever Idea, Simple but well worked… I will be Interesting to have the ability 2 close the meebo tab!!! also a reconnect Button, and the ability of filter contacts… anyway it help me a lot!!!
February 5th, 2008 at 9:54 am
i appreciate that everyone would like to have the ability to run meebo without the window open but to simulate this, i open meebo in a new browser window of it’s own and minimize it. i don’t touch it, it doesn’t come back and i still get the notifications.
maybe i’m missing some amazing functionality that everyone else is envisioning…
February 5th, 2008 at 11:40 am
Please: anybody can translate for me please my question?
Thanks!!!!!!!!
“Gostaria de agradecer a iniciativa referente à extensão para o Firefox!!!!
Mas tem um porém: Há necessidade de se abrir uma página paralela à do Meebo? Não poderia ser apenas pop-up? Seria muito melhor do que ficar com diversas páginas abertas, uma para o meebo e outras para navegação. Espero ter sido entendido e não mal compreendido! Um grande abraço e sucesso!!!!!”
February 5th, 2008 at 4:31 pm
That’s so cool! I really like that idea!
I was thinking of getting an extension. It really is awesome.
The comic strip was hilarious. (lol)
February 6th, 2008 at 4:13 am
Nice tool.
Regarding https: It is on my wishlist too, to connect via https.
What I’m wondering:
When I connect via https using the normal webpage access, then open the sidebar, is the plugin then using the open https connection?
So this would be a workaround to use a secure connection even without a dedicated button?

i like the add on, but i think it should be more like the buddy list in the meebo tab. i was looking through it and, even though its organized alphabetically, it would make more sense , and be more convenient, if it was organized just like the buddy list. if you guys could do that wiht the update, i would greatly appreciate it. :]

Anyways, I got Firefox beta and was wandering if you guys are planning on making one for the beta version–or at least when firefox 3 comes out. Thanks!
May 15th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
My windows is always cluttered with too many IMs open at the same time. There is also a problem of merging all my buddies into one list. Thank God we have Meebo to solve this problem. Meebo is pretty simple and works like a charm. Keep up the good work!
May 16th, 2008 at 4:25 am
Have you released the source for the plugin? I’ll be surprised and a little disappointed if not.
May 20th, 2008 at 11:04 am
Seriously.
Meebo used to be great on FF2, but we’re living in the future now and FF3 is already here.
Come on, guys. Stop toying around with your iPhone and get back to work.
June 5th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
For those that want to poke around with the source, just rename the .xpi file to .zip and extract to a folder. I’m working at getting a full grasp of how the plugin works and will attempt to get the application running on Firefox 3 Beta. So far the .xul files need to be updated to allow maxVersion to be “3″ (instead of previously being “2″). This allows the plugin to be installed on Beta 3, but I need to obviously figure out the incompatibilities. I’ve got debug mode turned on in the preferences, and the meebo icon displays properly and clicking it will open the Meebo sidebar, but nothing happens thereafter.
One thing I noticed is a reference to nsTransferrable.js, which is no longer in Firefox and has been fully incorporated into nsDragAndDrop.js, so I’ve pulled out all references. I’ll need to double-check the code more in-depth tonight, though.
June 5th, 2008 at 1:59 pm
As mentioned, the icon displays properly which opens and closes the sidebar, and I hadn’t noticed this until just now, but the bottom-right icon and notification window work correctly (i.e. when I get a message a window is displayed, and the red circle with a number corresponding to the number of missed messages displays).
So that means the only thing not working is the sidebar. It opens, but nothing appears inside of it.
June 5th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
Aha… It would appear that it’s working, however the failing component is this: http://www.meebo.com/firefox/sidebar.html
That’s what is loaded into the Meebo sidebar, and Meebo controls this. I’m guessing they have a limiter that has to do with the userAgent (limiting the browsers it can be opened with). I’ll test that URL out with FF2 to see what happens, but I’m guessing it will work on FF2. Currently on FF3 it just shows a white screen (which is what loads in the sidebar).
If you want the functionality that I’ve displayed above (which is all I really care about at this point) then you can modify install.rdf and modify “em:maxVersion” to a value like “3.*”, then zip up the contents and rename the .zip to .xpi and drag the .xpi into FireFox and install (then reboot). And Voila!
I’m not trying to break software, reveal secrets or any other action which might be perceived as malicious. I just want my meebo notifications on the latest version of Firefox!
June 12th, 2008 at 6:24 am
SoE, thanks for your efforts but the version numbering of the Meebo plugin is the least of its problems. You don’t need to change the code for it to start in FF3, all you need is install the Nightly Tester plugin.
That done, as you noticed, the real issue is the sidebar not working at all. Without the sidebar, this plugin is of course useless.
June 17th, 2008 at 9:53 am
I wouldn’t say it’s ‘useless’… I was still able to have meebo open in another tab and would receive the alerts whenever a message came in or a buddy signed on or off… Still very useful!
But either way, they’ve fixed the plugin and it works a treat! Yay! Thanks Meebo, you guys are awesome!

June 27th, 2008 at 10:41 pm
Hey Meebo fellows and ladies, I just wanted to say you’re missing a large segment of your user base by not making this extension Linux friendly. There’s over 80 comments on this page requesting a Linux friendly version, and I for one would like to see one released. Just thought I needed to add my 2 cents.
July 5th, 2008 at 12:19 am

July 5th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Please, make Meebo for Ubuntu !!!! Pease!!! we need meebo in Ubuntu!!!
July 7th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
I’ve just installed firefox extension on firefox 3… so it works ! I like to say though that I would like to use the firefox extension without having to be on the meebo web site, there is no sense using the sidebar and stay on the meebo site in the same time. Please do something about this thing. And if you created it why not doing some improvements to it, like hiding the offline contacts, group the users etc…
July 15th, 2008 at 8:08 am
simply cool!!! though there are few drawbacks which others have already mentioned, i know they will be overcome soon…
Thanks a lot!!!!

Bug/Add-on recommendation. When I have at least one window undocked if the notification window appears and I click it, it will create a new undocked conversation window on my taskbar (that’s pretty cool). I’d be great that if you’re in this “undocked” mode, the tab focus doesn’t change to the main meebo window when clickingthe notification pop-up
Thx!

August 7th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Nice in general. Would be nice to be able to remove tab. (Yes i know you’ve heard that already, but nothings been done about it…) Also, it would be nice, even if the tab was still there, to send messages from the side tab. Should be an easy bit of coding. Linux support and Possibly something for PS3 would be nice. Also it would be a lot less clutter if you could hide Offline people (Also on the Iphone) 8.5/10 (For now…. (-; )

October 7th, 2008 at 5:12 am
okay the only option missing for me is the one to take meebo *OFF* of my status bar, before FF3 I only used TidyMeebo which did everything I wanted, at this point I am fairly sure I do not want the majority of “features” here, i just like simple messaging that isn’t “in your face” and the last bit that is still in my face is the status bar.

I really like this app but with this not compatible with firefox 3.1…well, would you keep an ap on your wordpress blog that wasn’t compatible with the browser you’re using? Yeah, me either.
January 16th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Yeah, Meebo itself rules, the Firefox add-on fails. Sorry, but it just spends ram on nothing i can’t already do in the meebo tab i’m forced to keep open. Plus i’m a linux user half the time anyway, so no soup for this extension.
January 25th, 2009 at 9:26 pm
Glad to see that the meebo addon is now supported by Firefox 3.1, but really sad to see that the excessive fail & redundancy of the addon has yet to be addressed.
People want to use the addon so that they can access their meebo from the lovely sidebar that’s been created, and not have to deal with having a dedicated tab open for it.
Instead, to use the addon, you still need the dedicated tab, so it’s just extra bulk. It’s frustrating more than anything else.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:01 am
When will we finally not have to keep the meebo tab open? You have promised to fix it a long time ago, yet nothing has been done…
Other than that, it’s a great extension for a great browser or two (Firefox/Flock
).

Is meebo on Firefox broken today?
I just hit my bookmark and was met with a bunch of code.
Tried it in IE & Chrome without issue.
I notices earlier today when I was logged on changes to the meebo…
Before I closed my browser, the meebo chat window had some stupid autotext options regarding the dot on the letter I.
Also, my log off meebo button was missing.
Was there a change in the coding today?
Please, this is real annoying…

I would so much like to use this extension under Ubuntu Linux for already such a long time. My friends, too. Are you ever planning on offering this? It would really be appreciated.

Meebo firefox edition needs to have the same flexibility in showing contacts (all or just ones online); in groups, sorting, etc. A few user-interface tweaks would go a long way to making it more usable….

Tried to install Meebo Firefox add-on, but was met with an error box stating:
“meebo” could not be installed because it is not compatible with your Firefox build type (Linux_x86-gcc3). Please contact the author of this item about the problem.
I am running Firefox 3.0.13 on Ubuntu 9.04
I am liking Meebo, but am disappointed about the Firefox add-on not working.
Like len laporte said above “…Ill add my voice to the previous ones. Linux please. thnx”

LOVE the repeater… It’s working fine for me. One tiny little thing… When I use meebo.com my brower icon flashes in the taskbar when i have a new IM. But when I’m logged into my repeater URL that doesn’t happen. Any idea why? I’ve messed with it and even tried a repeater on a completely different network but same problem.
Thank you all SO much for this tool. We all love Meebo at work and when our IT shut us down, your repeater saved us!

You’d have to be a complete moron to build something for Firefox that only works in Windows. And then, to require that the web site remain open??? Are you crazy? If the website is already open in a tab, why do you need a freaking browser extension?
The point to the web is to avoid the OS centric limitations of the desktop. If you don’t “get” the web, go build silly ass VB apps for the financial services industry.
If you’re only going to build for Windows, stick with IE like all the rest of the corporate programmers who got their degree from the India School of Keyboard Pounding.
Rewrite the browser plugin using open standards so it works on all OS, and connect it to a PHP backend using CURL to simulate the connection to the web site. If you don’t know how, hire some real programmers to teach you.

over two years later and still no way to hide the tab–an oft requested feature. SMH.
