We have a really exciting piece of news to share with all of you today. meebo and AOL have crafted an official partnership!

AOL came to us a little while ago and told us that they were going to be releasing Open AIM 2.0. The goal of the program is to create many new ways for developers to build really cool applications on top of the AOL IM platform, and they asked if we’d sign on as an official partner. Of course!

This will let us do a bunch of cool things here at meebo. You’ll see improvements like richer buddy info available for all you AIM users in meebo and we’ll be able to pull in more of your AIM profile information. I’m sure you’ll be seeing a few other neat little tricks AOL and meebo will pull off together, too! And don’t worry, if you use meebo on any other network, everything’s business as usual.

This is also a fantastic thing for developers, who will undoubtedly build some really cool applications. Even more important, this is awesome for all of you…our users. There will be a lot of neat, innovative products both at meebo and elsewhere that will let you communicate with your friends in all sorts of fun ways!

Finally, a big shout out to the meebo and AOL teams that worked so hard to make this happen. Martin, Sharon, Chris, Natalie and Danny were hugely helpful on the meebo crew. Over in Virginia (where AOL’s based) huge props to David, Tom, Ron, Doug, Stephen and Greg.

I’m sure it’s pretty obvious, but we’re insanely excited to work with AOL to help bring a big leap forward for IM users. We’ll be working with AOL quite closely and hope to bring you all some really fun stuff down the line.

Seth

This is exciting opportunity to really open up the communities to vast new ways of using the messaging network. Looking forward to see what Meebo does in this space with AOL

Thanks for the props Seth. We can’t wait to work with Meebo to add to the already great experience for all the Meebo users out there. If you are interested in more details about Open AIM, just check out my blog at http://www.gregsmind.com or the developer website at http://dev.aol.com/openaim.

  4. Sonja Says:

    Hi guys,
I just found meebo and, whoa! I’m anticipating that it’ll be a godsend. The company I work for blocks all external “native” IM applications, so that connecting with external contacts happens very slowly. I can’t wait to see how meebo will help solve this problem.

  5. Pavel Says:

    Hi guys,
does it mens that ICQ network will be able to use those new features and more importantly open protocol as well?
I know it’s not really the AIM network but it’s owned by the AOL so maybe it could …
    Thanks again

    Pavel

  6. Steph Says:

heyy. I liike that i guess since i have to be always on that. But if you guys could it would be good to get pictures for when using msn and not having a meebo account. I would like to also see my friends pics cuz my friends will say something about their pic and i can’t see it. Well yea. That’s it.

  7. Ben Says:

thats pretty sweet so we can hook everything up. im gonna like this

  8. summer Says:

omg that is soo cool i wish i could do that but i cant soo if u can write me back

  9. RobS Says:

Well, congratulations, Seth…I guess. You will excuse me if I don’t fully share your enthusiasm, because from your somewhat vague descriptions it seems not at all clear where this will lead. I would much have preferred to hear that you had “partnered” with Mozilla and the Open Source movement, which does seem more in keeping with the spirit you try to convey in your corporate culture.

Of course I have prejudices toward verbal, as opposed to visual, audio, or animated communication, and it seems to me that the basic lifeblood of Meebo has been getting neglected for some time, that is, the ability to connect people VERBALLY across distance and despite the obstacles posed by distance and a number of other factors.

So naturally I am a bit wary, and concerned that this “partnership” with AOL, which seems mostly interested in power and control, can lead only to further neglect of your basic “mission”.

By the way, I would appreciate it if someone could tell me what has recently happened to the “sign up” functionality from the Meebo homepage? It seems we are going backwards: since Meebo started there was always a link to the “sign up” algorithm for each of the IM systems accessible thru Meebo, but suddenly, and without fanfare or even announcement, all those “sign up” links were DISAPPEARED from the homepage. When I get a minute I will see if anyone has posted in the forum about it, meantime, anyone here know anything? (I’ll bet a cookie Seth does…but ain’t talkin’!)

  10. Studius Says:

What did meebo have to give up to sell their souls to satan?

  11. DocXango Says:

I still wont touch AIM with a ten foot stick, unless it is to beat someone at AOL, but hopefully this will drive even more traffic to the site, increasing your revenue, increasing the chances of you being here for me in years to come.

Now please tell me this is a partnership as in “we shall work together to make sure our apps play well together” and not a “we own your soul now biatch” partnership.

  12. Sohrab Says:

    Hi ! Very Good ;) – My web : http://www.bia2dige.ir

  13. thep0cketr0cket Says:

The reason I opened a Meebo account is because of my disgust with AOL. When I updated Mozilla and AIM together AOL embedded its own search engine into Mozilla and nothing that AOL told me was accurate in getting rid of the _horrible_ search engine. I finally found help on a Mozilla forum. My fear is that AOL as its megaconglomerate self will impose open meebo and its users. I agree that this opens a lot of possibilities, and may increase traffic and revenue. However, such im programs as these stand as competitors to AOL and it is in their best interest fiscally to overrun you.

  14. mdmadph Says:

WTF? Seriously, considering AOL’s previous experiences with releasing our personal data to anyone who wants it, I don’t see how anyone could think this is a good idea. Now I have to find a new chat client. :(

  15. .Tha.Wattx. Says:

  17. DrYak Says:

On the other hand, AOL is behind the suits that forced the Gaim->Pidgin renaming, i.e.: against the very one company that developed the library which enabled nice applications like Meebo (formely libgaim, now libpurple), so it sounds a little bit like AOL suddenly changing mind.

  18. Eastwood Says:

I understand all the benefits to the partnership..

but… ive always seen my self as kind of a maverick. so..

  19. sabra Says:

hi i’am new to this page. so i hope to meet some wounderful people here

  20. ColaKills Says:

AOL is not interested in anything but profit, and this goes quite against Meebo’s projected image. I’m afraid you’ve lost a user.

  21. abhijit Says:

    whoa!

    this sounds great!

    looking forward to it!

i just hope meebo doesn’t go the AOL way altogether.

    cheers!

  22. Paul Says:

AOL is all about making money…top priority!

    :’(

    Please keep everything free!!!!!!!!!!
(AND NO ADS!! Promise no ads!)

  23. mwarden Says:

Congratulations to AOL, who has finally realized that it is in their best interest to open their protocol. Too bad they waited until after it was IRRELEVANT.

What I find a little interesting is that Meebo would not be possible without the previously-named GAIM (now pidgin, thanks to AOL’s lawsuits). I’m not sure how I feel about meebo now helping AOL’s IM team in their desperate attempt to remain remotely relevant.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pidgin_%28software%29#Naming_dispute

You really want to be supporting the people who retarded the progress of the library behind meebo?

  24. Nicole Says:

I am sorry but I can no longer use meebo once it partners with AOL. I use meebo to not have to use AIM which loads so much crap on my computer along with a myriad of other AOL issues. Whyd you have to do this meebo?! WHY?!!

  25. kmkl Says:

    @ Nicole & everyone else

u don’t have to use AIM, its just an option

    gr8 news!
    meebo rocks!!!!

  26. rdog Says:

AOL merger? no thanks. the cool thing about meebo is that they WERE solo fliers.

    back to pidgin i go…

  27. unique meebo user 14356815 Says:

I read the first line and I thought it meant you guys were bought by AOL, I yelled “NOOOOOOO” out loud.

Mildly relieved that doesn’t appear to be the case, but what RobS said. Ditto

    > I would much have preferred to hear that you had “partnered” with Mozilla and the Open Source movement, which does seem more in keeping with the spirit you try to convey in your corporate culture.

So naturally I am a bit wary, and concerned that this “partnership” with AOL, which seems mostly interested in power and control, can lead only to further neglect of your basic “mission”.

    RobS, word up.

  28. Steve Phelps Says:

One of the joys of using meebo has been the ability to escape from the offensively intrusive, computer-crippling, lowest-common-denominator-pandering marketing ploys of AOL. I hope that you all make your nut on this deal, but it’s not something that your serious, businessperson users can look to with much enthuisiasm.

  29. Ty Says:

    This is GREEEEAAATTT!!! Thanks Meebo!

  30. Sanders Says:

All I want is to be able to transfer files with nonMeebo users! If you can do that I’ll be so happy.

  31. Makenshi Says:

Will part of this initiative include full support for XMPP? That is the only thing that /might/ convince me to continue using AIM.

  32. ginny Says:

I should have known this was too good to last. I tried the web-based aol IM and it totally, totally sucked. It would say I was logged on when i wasnt, say I wasnt when i was, it was worse than trying to communicate with a couple of cans and some string. And I wont even get into how evil aol is in general; others already have. I am afraid. Very afraid. But let me say here how much i’ve appreciated meebo and its wonderful free virtually bug-free service! until now…

  37. Esteban Says:

I have some serious concerns over this “partnership,” however, I am going to exercise some patience and see where this goes before I think too hard into this. It’s really easy to come to some negative conclusions quite quickly.

  38. occsafmedic Says:

You’ve fallen into the overdeveopment trap– the whole purpose for using meebo was a simple & uncluttered interface– now, you’re adding all the crap we don’t want– if I wanted bells & whistles, I would just install aim or ym. I’ve noticed you STILL haven’t gotten rid of the nagware– YES

  39. weslley Says:

meebo, if you care, you just lost a user, I loved meebo and I enjoyed it, but now that your going to sell us down the river, goodbye

sure it means a large chunk of money from aol, and further invasion of my privacy by aol, and here i thought i gave aol the heave ho a long time ago.

all i can do is vote by stop using and promoting meebo and start convincing friends to stop using meebo as well, since they dislike aol as much as i do, it will be easy to do.

“meebo you have now lost users, but do you care?”

  55. Rich Says:

I’ve had many years experience as a tech rep with various companies and AOL was pretty much considered a VIRUS. I worked for an ISP also, the AOL platform was a mess and so many customers asked us to help remove it from there systems. The only thing that came out of AOL is WinAmp. I really like Meebo and hope this works because of all the hardwork yall have put into it. Don’t let these AOL peeps ruin your good business. Good Luck! Rich

Congrats Guys, you been doing a pretty amazing job.

    Keep going on.

  61. Mike Verinder Says:

this is actually a VERY good comment. from an above poster.

The fact is guys.. you are growing and becomming much larger.. your footprint is getting much bigger. You also have a VERY trendy and unique clientel. Your partnerships have a great and big impact on your business. Obviously by reading this blog you can see the value in getting your clients opinion before you agree to something like this. I agree totally with the above comment.. Meebo has its place in the market.. but as soon as you start trying to become everything to everyone. You lose the niche that you once had. Its a very risky gamble.

all that being said… what do i know… im just a IT QA Manager

Meebo was introduced to me by my friend after knowing that I couldn’t get online at my workplace. and once used, it’s so hard to switch to other online messengers! =)

  65. Justin T. Says:

I (like others, apparently) have a love-hate relationship with AOL. Almost all of my friends use AIM exclusively, and I am therefore forced to use their protocol to keep in tough with those friends. That’s why I love meebo. It allows me to get as far away from AOL as possible while still keeping in touch with my (sometimes ignorant, less technically inclined) friends.

This new “partnership” with AOL makes me nervous. I’ve purposefully given AOL the absolute minimum amount of personal information possible. I like it that way. Will meebo now force me to provide the very information I’ve been trying to keep away from AOL’s big-brother-ish habits?

Also, that mention of AOL’s new “embedded ad system” sends up all kinds of red flags. Embedded ads within my conversations (or even in annoying places in the meebo client) would be the fastest way to lose me (and many others, I suspect) as a customer.

In short, you might need to do some more convincing before I believe this is a good thing.

  66. Jonathan Says:

okay so i realized there are already buddy chatrooms but i mean like on the itouch. but that would mean you would have to pair up with apple right iono. but yeah try! cause id use it all day if i could have chatrooms on it

  67. Jan Says:

    FORCED ADS?

    From the Open AIM page:

“you must pick 2 of the 5 options listed below and incorporate them into your Developer Applications. These options include

    * Advertising
    * Buddy Info
    * Expressions and Buddy Icons
    * AIM Start Page
    * AIM Toolbar

Just to be clear, these requirements don’t apply to Plugins, Bots or the use of the Presence Indicators. Please note that if your application exceeds 100,000 peak simultaneous users, you must implement Advertising as described below as one of your two options.”

I’m pretty sure that Meebo passes the 100k peak users.. which would mean that meebo is going force AOL adds down our throats? Thanks, but no thanks.

  68. Chuck Says:

    OMG! DONT DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
AIM features are great sure :) .
    but its AOL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

I HOPE THE HUGE CORPORATION DOESN’T GO TO MEEBOS HEAD!!!! that would be sad!

I love meebo and dont know what i would do if i had to stop using it!!!!

    AOL=EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. roof_top_eagle Says:

That’s great!!! Personally Meebo has been a godsend because I have an old computer (soon to be upgraded yahoooooo!) and if I want to keep the music I listen to regularly on my computer I can’t have all the apps like AIM, MSN and Yahoo. However I don’t think now that I’ve found meebo I will even bother downloading the IM apps to keep room for other good stuff :)

  71. Casey Says:

AOL sucks as a company. Their Internet is horrible.

AIM on the other hand was once a great program before they turned it into a big bloatware package.

They are also doing this Open AIM thing way too late… if they would’ve done this maybe 5 years ago it could be somewhat relevant, but they are way behind on that one.

Best of luck to the Meebo team on working with such a “great” company.

  72. ryan Says:

I switched to Meebo because I was sick of all the ads and secret programs that AIM kept downloading to my computer. I hope that this partnership doesn’t mean that Meebo is heading down the same path. I was very disappointed to hear that you guys essentially sold out.

  75. Christian Uhl Says:

Be careful with partnerships and don t let them take your freedom!

But some improvements for non-official ICQ-Clients would be really cool….
( last protocol change which made status messages only avaible to authorised people on the server-side contact list )

How is this great? AOL gives away everyone’s information. How is this a good thing? Where is the good that you speak of? Maybe good for AOL so they have more information to give away. I came to meebo so I didn’t have to see AOL crap if I didn’t want it.
It seems more like YOU all want AOL, not so much the users. Sounds kinda selfish.
Thanks for ruinning my week. I’ll be looking for a new im place now.

  80. Eastwood Says:

man i really dont want to go back to trillian..

  81. Leslie Anders Says:

I’m not keen on the idea at all. What drew me to meebo in the first place (aside from being able to communicate whilst behind firewalls), was… I hate AIM. The ads are so irritating…
Meebo was a way for me to communicate with my contacts spanning many IM clients in a simple, elegant interface. With all of the add-ons and now this partnership, meebo will become just like all the others.

  82. The Guru Says:

I agree many are dissatisfied with AOL. I myself am in the same boat.
However, here I see an opportunity for allowing AOL to move itself out of the hate box.
The meebo community as a whole should inform AOL what it should do to make AOL “more” acceptable to the general public at large, that it is now.

If AOL wants to see more happy users, then it will change, else, we know what.

I suggest meebo make it an important point in the agreement for AOL to change, else we may see meebo having more dissatisfied users, similar to AOL.

May The Creator bless meebo on its quest to partner with AOL.

    http://TheGurusViews.blogspot.com

  83. Nikolaos Chivkas Says:

If meebo does NOT change, then this will be a great opportunity to open up new doors. Any chance that Facebook, Myspace, or even Skype IM will be added to Meebo? :-)

  84. Vince E Says:

so does that mean that meebo will be included in those annoying AOL free trial cd’s that we are still finding everywhere around america even though they haven’t been printed in years…

hehe jk. but those CD’s were like everywhere in ‘97- ‘00

That great will there be a meebo mobile? Maybe a java program with a rich GUI and a all in one appcation?

  88. Jimmy Says:

Looks like AOL has already hired a clan of poorly educated knuckle heads to avenge the death of Meebo. Cheers to you Vince and good luck on your mission to “protect meebo”, but I assure you a million “stfu”s and “gtfo”s won’t do a big of good with what’s coming.

  89. Vince E Says:

meebo is pretty awesome man and i see good things in the future for them. if you are bright, have a good idea and work hard at it, then you will succeed. i see all these things in the meebo team, unless they are going total ENRON on us.

but its cool, i understand there has to be haters everywhere.

  90. Steven Says:

AOL has always, and still is, been for internet newbies. AOL is a hellish software to get removed from a computer, if you’ve ben …..let’s say……..unfortunate enough to have installed it. (Their installation CD’s are best used for coasters…..or tree decorations if you live in a trailer park)

Keep meebo the way it is. Pair up with AOL and you’ll have to change your name from MEEBO to FUBAR!!!!

  91. Jeff Says:

“Vince E”. You are a tool my friend. Who protects a website application?

  92. Brent Says:

  95. ChasedCarrot Says:

What people forgot to read is that, if one of the services have more than 100.000 it HAVE TO use the AOL ad program, and embed them into the service. I believe Meebo have +100.000 users, so as soon as this become a reality, I’ll leave.

  96. UnknownPerson Says:

Stop whining like a crybaby…meebo works very hard to build their service and provide to you all guys and gals. It’s free to use, right (haha you gotta pay for the internet so you can use it)?

After reading all the comments for this blog, EVEN NO ONE HAS THANKED MEEBO FOR THEIR HARD AND DELICATE WORK!

    People you all are sad.

    Thank you meebo for everything!

  98. Jon Says:

Sounds good to me! Thanks for the hard work.

I hope this works as well as it sounds like it will…I switched from AIM to meebo to get away from the bugs and problems of AIM.

Whoever writes long comments àbout aol are obviously nerds. who gives a crap. and i don`t know anything about that stuff but i know that aol sucks.
i don`t know anything about this stuff and when the comment board appears when you open meebo, well it`s really annoying.

  100. DJ Ares Says:

    Awesome – Congrats!

  101. lifelikeneek Says:

I have loved Meebo since the day I first was introduced to it (several years ago). One of the things I love about Meebo is the small town business feeling that you guys have. Heck, I have Meebo automatically load every time I load Firefox. As a fellow programmer and web developer I can appreciate your hard work. I am honestly disappointed in this move by you. You haven’t lost a user just yet but, I will be keeping a close eye on how this partnership will turn out. I have more than 13 years of computer experience and have personally seen what AOL can do to systems, networks, and the hearts of its users. The only reason I continue to use AIM is because that is what everyone in my area uses.

It’s a sad, sad day for the open source movement.

  102. Black_Vapor Says:

Congrats for being recognized by a corporation. It shows that your team out there is doing a good job.
But knowing AOLs goals and mistakes in the past is what made me stray away from their products and use MSN and Yahoo.

Finding Meebo was great, I was actually able to use my old AIM name without the cons of having AIM or AOL on my computer. It would change permissions and list inquires about being the default of everything. It was horrible… and with the huge data leakage they had? Embarrassing.

Just watch yourselves… This place is so great. Don’t let AOL ruin it for all of us.
…and no freakin’ ADs… I’ll donate to help keep this place alive… im sure a lot of us would…. just no ADs.

Be careful guys! AOL isn’t always the nicest kid on the block.

“Vince E”. You are a tool my friend. Who protects a website application?
    by “Jeff”

What kind of person comes on a dev blog and posts flame? Seriously? Can’t someone be slightly protective of something they use everyday… especially when guys swoop in try to rain on someone elses parade?

Dunno, but it doesn’t sound like much a tool thing to do to me… sounds like flaming has always had more “tool” connotation than trying to protect your dev blogs from other wackjobs.

Hey! im new to meebo and thought i’d get started with a blog comment.

    IN RESPONSE TO:
    Vince E.

People will have their opinions and sometimes they can be rude or displeasing. Although I do agree with you, Vince E. , that people are “allowed” to be a little protective over something. Honestly, im totally overprotective over my website application and other items i use everday…. so Jeff….. come on and respect other people

Which you don’t even see if you just close the window and click the alert box that says your logging out
Aol has recently done a lot of good things
So while some of you complain that making money is a bad thing Aol is as evil as it once was.
    Now meebo
where’s that OpenID support so we can use yahoo and aol (and blogspot and typekey and quite a few others)to login to all of our accounts

  109. Katie T. Says:

if you guys are teamming up with AOL, can we also add photos and pictures in our profiles for aim?
My friends who use downloaded aim, were able to post pictures in their profile, but i won’t be able to see it. And when i try to put pictures in my profile, it won’t let me. So i was just wondering if you guys could do a little something to allow people to post pictures! THX!
