In five days, I’ll be crammed in a coach seat, 30,000 feet in the air, on my way to Japan for a week and a half. Velcroed to my body, will be a cell phone (because Seth freaks out a lot), a laptop (I am a nervous wreck if I can’t check on the servers), and a camera (any meebo users in Japan?).
Six months ago, when this trip was planned, meebo was just an idea. Funny how things turned out… When I said I wanted a vacation back then, what I really meant was no salary, a 24-7 work schedule, lots of pizza, and loads of fun
Upon the realization that this trip was coming up quickly (and Seth finished freaking out), meebo went into power-up mode (like when Mario gets the invincibility star and goes nuts). We’re pushing new scalability features to help ease the growing pains of the service, as well as stability tweaks so that Elaine can handle any emergencies while I’m gawking at the electronics district in Tokyo.
We’re still planning for a release when I am gone, chock full of goodies for our users and I plan on making full use of my laptop in my hotel room. In the meantime, I should get back to work

meebo is great, since it allows me to waste time at work more effectively! While you’re in Tokyo you should definitely check out this restaurant.

Are you going anywhere else in Japan? Let me know if you need some good recommendations.
October 19th, 2005 at 7:32 am
Wow…It is making me and feeling like stunned to see your work. It is really a great work actually I have to say.
It may not ne known to others but especially our college students are using this much. Because in our college nothing can be installed and chatting is not allowed. Meebo is rocking I have to say.
Well, I congradulate all. I am daily using meebo. It is always making me smile and helps me to stay connected with my GF. Praise the Lord. God bless.

Sandy:
Take care in Japan. I hope you can show some photos of your travel. You know, nothing too fancy, you can take pictures from one of those little parks at night, Ok, whatever, just take care. And please taste one of those delicious “tempura” or “teriyaki” over there.
Salute!
October 19th, 2005 at 1:08 pm
And now that I’ve found meeboo I do not need to hack the corporate firewall to meet friend (hush, nobody knows about it
)
Keep going guys (and gals)!
Web 2.0 needs innovation and creativity.
Be distinct, be different.
I wish you all good luck in your endavours.
October 19th, 2005 at 3:03 pm
thanks for all the recommendations everyone. i also got a helpful tip that my cell phone won’t work in japan… yup, i’m aware of this and plan on renting a phone at the airport
i’ll definitely post pics while i’m there!
October 19th, 2005 at 4:15 pm
Good luck with the trip. I live in Japan and I can say that you will have a lot of fun.
Indeed, your US cell will not work here in Japan with the funky networks we have here. Your best bet is to buy a cheap prepaid cell from Vodaphone or AU.
Lastly, if you need any questions answered then feel free to hit me up.

Pretty much the entire International section of Kansai Gaidai University near Osaka has been enjoying Meebo–AIM express cuts out every five minutes it seems, but Meebo is rock steady. So if you see a whole bunch of IPs from Osaka in your stats… it’s us. ^_^
Enjoy your time here–I know I am!! ^_^
October 20th, 2005 at 1:46 am
its cool….really superb…..Amazing
October 20th, 2005 at 4:20 am
Why does meebo not really add a new contact for keeps, is it just for a session or what.
October 20th, 2005 at 4:41 am

Dude. For Serious, I really like this website alot. I think the real thing I can point out is that it’s never been blocked at my school. I’ve showed everyone of my friends this site and they cannot stop using it now. I can access every single instant messenger I have with ease and thats what I really like about it. One thing I can suggest though is if you could maybe show the different messengers in their own windows. That would be very nice. But overall, an A+. I can’t wait to see what new features are added next *ponders file transfering*haha. hopefully.

Hi Sandy,
Meebo is awesome and so well done! Welcome to Tokyo. While you are here make sure you check out 1) Meiji Shrine 2) Harauku Girls and shops and 3)eat takoyaki (octopus balls, well it`s just in ball shape really). Your two most useful words, “sumimasen” (excuse me) and “chikan! yamate kudasai” (Train pervert! Stop that!). Tokyo rocks, I`m sure you`ll have a wonderful time.
October 20th, 2005 at 6:16 pm
First I’d like to say thanks for this kickin’ service. I just learned about it a few days ago and its already proving invaluable at the office. Really a tremendous site, I can see its popularity exploding in the very near future and I hope it all goes over well for you guys. Second, welcome to Japan. I’ve been living here for almost 2 years now. Akihabara (Electric Town) is definately a place to see for the… technologically inclined
I’d also recommend the temples of Kamakura or the Minato Mirai district of Yokohama (my personal favorite place) all good stuff. Good luck with your trip and if you need help with directions or anything, I’d be happy to do what I can.
Cheers

Hiya Sandy, Thanks to you guys….and gal for coming up with this service
As for your question, yes you do have meebo users in Japan.
Well like Ginger said, make sure you hit the Meiji Jingu, Shibuya and Harajuku. They’re all walking distance from each other anywho, so you’ll have no problem finding them. Try to hit Harajuku on a Sunday though so you’ll see gothic lolitas.
Are you gonna be staying right in Tokyo? Well Have fun!
October 21st, 2005 at 10:08 am

wow, you guys are awesome, thanks again for all the info. i’ll post from japan and let everyone know where i am…
October 21st, 2005 at 4:01 pm
NO CLIENT! Meebo rocks. I can now access IM from the road without a laptop! Nice job you guys.
On a side note, I’ve noticed you got the killer user community buzz going. Take a note from Google and Mercury Interactive and get your logo on a t-shirt and give it out to your champions for suggesting good ideas ASAP. They will brag about Meebo like a proud parent and help you transition from “mysterious company name” to “that IM thingy”. If you do it early, you run a 2-3x higher chance of becoming a verb (ie, to Google something…let’s Meebo?).
Seth knows all this stuff. But you guys are clearly deep in the code (cause it rocks) where t-shirts and logos are not top of mind. But give it an hour on CafePress or iPrint, give out 50 or so, and people will buy them from there. I kid you not – Mercury Interactive t-shirts are a profit center now. ;oP
Cheers,
SD
October 21st, 2005 at 4:38 pm
BTW, you say Meebo in Japanese like “mibo” or “miboru”, whichever you prefer.
Heh, an “ohayou~!” is the most sunny greeting
October 21st, 2005 at 7:58 pm
Hey guys,
I agree it is a great service, but you know what, the more meebo is going to be famous, the more places it will blocked. The site is blocked in Accenture India already. Thanks to all the publicity.
October 22nd, 2005 at 12:46 am
I live in Japan and use meebo at work…its great….
October 22nd, 2005 at 11:49 am
Hey, well I’m in the Navy and I live near Tokyo Japan on NAF Atsugi!
MEEBO ROCKS! it even works on Govt. computers with no problem!! Yeah Akihabara is GREAT… if you go to any of the little karaoke bars anywhere in japan… 1. drinks are really expensive $5-$8 minimum…. 2. girls who say “buy me drink?” work for the bar and most likely wont come home with you.. and most likely wont even get REAL drinks… just a heads up… if you have any questions… feel free to email me napstertraffic@yahoo.com OR MEEBO ME YIM blink_182_bassist
thanks for this great service!

Yeah, the Seattle School District also blocked Meebo too, I mean, IMO that sucks.
October 25th, 2005 at 1:35 am
[...] So today is the first day that my Meebo partner in crime isn’t coding beside me. Sandy’s in Japan on a well-deserved, preplanned vacation. For the last week or so, we’ve been polishing the back-end so the servers would need less maintenance while she’s treking through Tokyo. In the upcoming 7 – 10 days, you’ll probably see more javascript improvements while I keep a watchful eye on the servers. Though Sandy is toting an emergency laptop and cell phone around Japan, she probably won’t respond to the forums or email as frequently as normal. I thought Theo would rejoice in having Sandy’s office chair all to himself, but actually, I think he misses Sandy too (there’s a rumor circulating on Flickr that Theo’s a toy, here’s a pic to the contrary). Sandy’s pretty liberal with the cat treats and pets, so that might have something to do with it. [...]

Hi,
Just want to let you know that meebo profile seems low. Among my friends, we have various accounts but no one seems to consolidate under meebo.
Another point – is there a risk of virus infection across the board if my MSN gets hit, which happened recently.
Cheers!
