As you might already know, the Meebo office is located right on Castro Street in downtown Mountain View, CA, less than an hour south of San Francisco by car or train. The eclectic mix of restaurants lining the streets serves as the cafeteria for many workers in the area. During lunch hours, you will often see employees of local companies enjoying a meal at these dining establishments. It’s notable that Meebo employees often choose to eat at the restaurants that are within a two to three block radius of the office. Could it be mere coincidence that all the good restaurants are in close vicinity to our office? I am certain it’s not due to anyone’s aversion to walking long distances for a meal, so that must be the case. Definitely. (That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.)
This week and in future posts, I will cover some of our favorite eateries in the neighborhood. I’m going to start off with three great places to eat good Thai food for those on a budget. You won’t see any reviews of the actual food because you can read the Yelp postings for that information, and tastes can be subjective. Instead, I would like to share why I find the restaurants interesting and fun.
Only one street down from Meebo is a place that Lil Jon would love if he were to visit Castro street. That is King of Krung. Yeah! The restaurant is split into two parts on the inside. Judging from the architecture, it used to be two store fronts. In one of the rooms, the walls are lined with mirrors, which always reminds me of the scene from Game of Death for some reason. It’s worth checking out. A few doors down is Amarin. Amarin is consistently packed during lunch and dinner hours and offers several seating options. You can go shoeless and sit on the floor at one of their traditional tables or eat at the outside tables where you can people-watch as pedestrians walk past. They also have the standard tables and chairs inside that most of us are used to, if you aren’t feeling adventurous. Not far from Amarin and King of Krung, you will find Bangkok Spoon. It is located off of Castro so they get less traffic. The staff there were incredibly friendly and great the times I’ve been there. If you plan to try this place out, do it soon, because “For Sale” signs have started adorning the store windows. I found the fare served at each of these restaurants comparable though many Meebo employees have a slight leaning towards Amarin.
If you see us at any of these places, please come by and say hi. We are a friendly bunch, and I want to remind everyone that Meebo welcomes any of our users to come by the office for a tour of the place. You can plan a lunch trip to one of the restaurants I mentioned here and drop by the office afterwards.
Before I conclude, I want to do something new and give a shout out to Meebo users Anna, Ha, and also Sherily, who just started at her new job. I will be writing another blog post soon. If you want a shout mention then, shoot me an email at ted@meebo.com with what city you are from and a short message about why you want silly old me to mention you on the blog. If you want, send a picture of yourself using a Meebo product, with a fun caption. If you give me permission, and if they’re worthy, I’ll post the most interesting pictures on the bulletin board located at the Meebo front entrance, making you eternally famous. Or at least until we take them down.

So where in the world would I get a Meebo product at anyway? I have to admit the line about being famous until you took the pictures down made me chuckle. Hardy har har!!

I live in Miami….why do I want to read a column about food 1 hour south of San Francisco? I’m just saying….

Hey, there are a lot of great places around Castro. One of my favorites was “Lucy’s Teahouse”, which used to be tucked in a little alleyway over by Rwoya Noodle House. Lucy’s was sort of quirky but it had nice little lunch plates.
Ryowa is great for authentic ramen, gyoza, and they have nifty jars of kimchee interspersed between the diners (who sit diner-style at counters) that is “all you can eat”. I always eat WAY too much of it. It used to be cash only so take $$ before you head there.
Love your product…but my company just blocked you guys not three days ago. I wish you’d come out with a mobile product that I could run off of my phone (HTC 8525).
*Hint, hint!*

nothing ….
July 30th, 2008 at 6:59 am
There are a ton of fantastic restaurants on Castro – reading your post makes me miss the Bay Area so much (although, I suppose I can’t really complain about lack of food options in London…) My mom works just downstairs from your office so I luckily get to sample the local best-ofs whenever I go home. After your reviews I’m sure we’ll have some more places to add to the list!

Ted…
“If you want a shout mention then, shoot me an email at ted@meebo.com with what city you are from…”
1. Why do we have to send you an email? Why can’t you just check HERE?
2. What if we’re not from a city? What if we live in the country? In a small town? On the beach?

July 30th, 2008 at 9:27 am
I enjoy reading all of the meebo postings, but that was completely worthless, and I’m from the bay. Did a fourth grader write that, or was it just lost in translation?
July 30th, 2008 at 9:36 am
I think the thoughts are cool
July 30th, 2008 at 9:59 am
less than an hour south of san francisco? man you make it sound so easy……people it’s like the worst commute ever on a car….on 101 and it takes usually longer than an hour on 280…..
July 30th, 2008 at 10:50 am
The ramen places are super good.
July 30th, 2008 at 10:59 am
I agree with Alex, I love the ramen over there. I really go there for Tea Era, best boba place I know in the bay area.

I really like to read meeno post….n i really njoy
July 30th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Why are all the meebo blogs so pointless? No one really cares about your favorite restaurants, what your dog did on it’s walk today, or who in the Meebo office has the highest score on Wii Bowling (which is really really boring, by the way.) Enough with the blogs. They are silly and completely unentertaining.
July 30th, 2008 at 11:49 am

Neato. I’ll have to come visit sometime! I’m a local actor and I’ve auditioned at the Dragon Productions Theatre and TheatreWorks. Meebo has been a savior to the online socialites at work. Thanks for all the hard work and all the fantastic features! Feel free to visit my blog at:
http://kreenpananas.blogspot.com
I’ve been meaning to post a blog about the joys of Meebo! So stay tuned.

I was in San Jose a few years ago on Remedy training and had dinner at the Pot Sticker in San Fran’s China town. It was fab. I know it’s abit out of the way for a Meebo lunch but dinner some time is worth the trip. I recommend the Walnut Chicken

i agree — this post is worthless and the writer looks like he ran the post through Microsoft Word’s thesaurus to make him sound smarter. Drop the blogs unless you talk about your product.

@Jamie (aka evil troll)
It gives them something to talk about when there are not any updates
It would be much worse without a blog because it would be boring
and you must be real fun at parties, complaining about silliniess and such.

This is actually the first time I read a blog here in meebo. I really don’t entertain blogs because I have this preoccupation that reading it will waste my time. In short, I avoid “long” stories. However, it was fun reading yours not because I can relate or even have visited the places you mentioned. It’s just that I like the way you “tell story.” hehe. Am looking forward for your new blogs. I think I will also spend time reading it
Thank you.

I don’t know how you missed the Tied House Café & Brewery. While it is not technically on Castro Street, it is just a block down Villa Street. Their brewed on site beer is pretty amazing. Even if you don’t like beer or are under 21, their Salmon Fish and Chips are amazing. Cheers!
