Wallpaper is supposed to be making a comeback. But the wallpaper in my bathroom has been up since the last time wallpaper was cool, so I don’t think it qualifies. Think Where the Wild Things Are meets The Jungle Book (1967 animated film version). Spooky.
What does that have to do with Meebo? Not much. But our latest release is bringing wallpapers back to the Meebo console, and fortunately none of these backgrounds will make you wish you had a brighter night light.
First, a note about the IM History notification message: we aren’t including that in this release, and we are very appreciative of all the user feedback we received. Thanks to everyone who wrote in!
Now a quick summary of Meebo wallpapers for you:
- Back in June we updated the look and feel of Meebo, and our old wallpaper picker, which was getting bloated and impossible to navigate, had to go.
- So we got some designs together and asked you to throw in your two cents. You obliged. Like, a lot.
- Take a bunch of input from users, throw in lots of people’s thoughts, prototypes, designs, and implementations, add just a little sprinkle of fairy dust, and out comes the Appearance Panel!
It’s a new link at the top of your Meebo console, and we think you should give it a try. [A QUICK UI NOTE - to clear your wallpaper, click on the "preferences" link at the top of the Meebo console and find the "Appearance" section. We'll definitely be adding that to the Appearance Panel soon...]
And it’s not just the picker that’s better! We now have re-sizable wallpapers on Firefox 3, Safari 3, and Opera 9! Don’t like tiling wallpapers? Get on a standards-supporting browser, and enjoy your very own auto-scaling background.
But hold on to your socks, there’s more to come! Keep on the lookout for our next blog post, which will further elucidate the joys of gussying up your Meebo console… (Why do I feel like Ron Popeil right now?)

Great option. I do think that the option to clear the wallpaper would also be available on the appearance pane, not just on the preferences one. It might make it easier for those who tried a wallpaper but didn’t find one they liked.

Actually, I think another tab as settings/meebo me would have been better, or at least a consitant design for the windows.
And I think you should decrease the links,… I don’t need a link “accounts”, when I can access the accounts setup through settings. (Also in Desktopclients you manage your accounts in settings)

i’m used to google, where everything’s searchable. however, your interface for searching in the buddy list is so superior to google that i’ve nearly abandoned gtalk! you disappoint me however in not including a search button in the wallpaper selection. i really can’t believe you did actually, lol.
i do like that when i pick a background it doesn’t automoatically go back to the beginning, an annoying “feature” that a lot of selection things tend to have.
however, long band names just get cut off! they should scroll when i mouse past them.
can you have something like in ms word or powerpoint, where the most recently used backgrounds are shown somewhere?
also that’s a pretty small selection you got there. the sorting system is kinda crappy…maybe it should open to a seperate tab? that was always annoying but well it might be less annoying than having to dodge around my chat windows.

None of the categories does it for me. Can we also get some nice nature scenery or animal wallpaper .. maybe some art .. just something besides making my screen look like a commercial for somebody.

And once again, the people guiding Meebo prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that they are losing their way. It’s really depressing, because the basic concept is SO VALID, yet they are running it into the ground by their focus on frivolity instead of and at the expense of functionality.

The problem is that it appears they are not much interested in making things work. And it may be their downfall as soon as someone who IS interested in making things work comes out with a competing system that does work. I made a suggestion in a prior blog here for running a daily blog that would help enormously make things work, and so far it has been totally ignored, no one even commented on the suggestion.

Of COURSE they think virtually all their users are teenagers (and even pre-teens), because in large measure that’s true…even many of their users who aren’t still technically and chronologically teenies have not yet quite managed to get past adolescence in their behavior and approach to reality. And everyone knows that the world of Internet marketing, and especially IM marketing, sees its target market as consisting primarily of teens and especially teenage FEMALES. Which is one of the reasons so much time/energy/attention are invested in cosmetics as opposed to substance. They are trying to grab the attention of the generation that is growing up knowing almost nothing besides gadgetry and video images in terms of diversion and entertainment.

Personally I think that adding a Wallpaper pane is a great idea, but there are a few problems with it/I have a few suggestions. First of all as multiple people have said, there are very few non-commercial backgrounds. I think that beyond those people’s tastes are radically different, so if it where possible to add a section that contains images hosted elsewhere, i.e. drop it in a photobucket and hotlink it inside meebo. Second of all, The inability to clear the background is troubling. Third, I think there are many people unhappy with sacrifices of functionality and speed for glamour. Quite likely many of them could be satisfied if you could put meebo in a functionality mode, stripping away all themes, and other nifty though sometimes unimportant features. Just my two cents.

I like the overall concept, but I wish there was a way to clear the wallpaper if we click on one but don’t find any I like. I think I’m part of your so-called target market but I don’t really like any of your choices- most of them seem too commercial and not that all appealing unless you happen to find your favorite music group. Even then… I like one of the groups that is offered but the wallpaper was not very…erm…easy on the eyes.

The pane works fine for me, except, when I click on a color, all the windows (the buddy list, chat windows, the collapsable window at the bottom of the screen) all revert to the pale grey-almost-white instead of the color I clock on. Since I currently have the Chris Brown wallpaper, the only color that works is the dark grey. Is that supposed to happen? I’m confused. Sorry for my lack of intelligence, lol, but I’m hoping you can explain this to me? Thanks! And thank you for taking the time to read/answer me! Also, take your time with the new wallpapers! Don’t worry about what others pressure you to do–we can wait for them. I mean, the world won’t end if we don’t have the new ones RIGHT AWAY, lol. So, thanks again, and bye!

Also, someone, I think Rob suggested putting Meebo in a “functionality mode”…honestly, I’m not sure I like the idea. Maybe there could be a way to have a setting that puts Meebo into a “functionality mode”, that runs faster and cleaner? Sort of like putting game graphics on a low setting to make the game run faster and more efficiently. Because I want my Meebo to look nice, and I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one…
Thats my opinion, though. It’d probably be pretty hard to make an entirely different Meebo that is a functionality one.

I realized I made a typo in my comment.
Rob’s suggestion sounded like we should get rid of things like wallpapers that make Meebo run more smoothly and quickly as a oermanent sort of thing, and I meant to suggest a feature that could implement that, so that we could have a choice, but my wording made it sound I like I was suggesting the same thing. “Someone said we should have pie for desert. I think this is a bad idea. Instead, we should have pie.”

When I click on “Appearance”, I get a black window saying “One moment please”, and then I get a popup – “Oops! Meebo detected a problem in network connection.” However, chatting still works fine, and there are no network problems. When I click on “OK”, the black “Appearance” window remains as it is, without any change.
What can be causing this problem at my side? Please feel free to email me if you need to discuss this issue further

I seem to be having trouble just changing my background since the last update….. at that – it doesn’t seem like meebo will let me change it at all! How can I do this????
Also- when is a PSP version going to be released?????? If the iPhone/iTouch version was reformatted to have minimum memory usage then all you’d have to do was figure out the code that the PSP’s broadcast on/through.

i like the wallpapers a lot, espacially the ones of the lego game *g* but is there any possibility to get the “one-color”- (it wasnt only one color, i know) background from before? these wallpapers are all to colorful for me.
id also appreciate a possibility to include his own image, maybe from a foreign server.

This feature is great conceptually, but let me list the things mentioned above along with the biggest issue:
1) DIVERSITY – Almost everything is a band’s picture. Right now I’ve got mine set to Serj Tankian, but I was really hoping for a shot of a park… or the ocean… or something more nature oriented. Abstract wallpapers (ala Bryce or another 3D modeling program) would also be fantastic.
2) SCALABILITY – Here’s something that hasn’t been mentioned yet. These wallpapers don’t scale for those of us with one of those futuristic, high-tech wide screen monitors. We just get to see the top two-thirds of the image. I understand you guys are busy playing four-square, but can you PLEASE upgrade your monitors in-office so you can pick up on these things? A great change would be either adding wide screen versions of the existing wallpapers or pillar boxing the image on the browser (easily done by telling the image to only stretch with the browser vertically).
3) RESOLUTION – All of these images are like… 1024×768. Can we get something a bit higher in resolution for those of us not running Meebo on an Eee PC (which is also wide screen) or our grandma’s computer?
Don’t let the mood of this comment get you guys down. This is a great feature conceptually, but I don’t feel that it was ready for a public release. Aside from this, Meebo has been great. Keep up the good work! Play more four square! ;D

1. The Tudors and Dexter are not music. The sorting kinda sucks.
2. I can get over the advertisement wallpapers, since it’s what keeps Meebo free, but can we get some patterns and/or abstract wallpapers too?
3. I should be able to specify the URL of a wallpaper to use as an alternative. Meebo doesn’t have to host it this way and I get to pick for the multitude that the Internet has to offer.
4. The clear wallpaper option should be part of the appearance pane.
5. The appearance pane should be a tab in preferences.

You can remove the wall paper by going into the preferences pane by clicking on it at the top of the window for those who haven’t figured it out. I agree with #s 4 and 5 of missa above. I’ve never heard of the bands in #1 and think that you should have some of the cool artwork Sony has up on Bob Dylan’s site. I really don’t care if you get artwork or not, cause i rarely see my background…

Hi guys, I just wanna say that the Appearance panel does not work in mine: when I click on it, a clear, transparent panel appears along with the “Check your connection” panel. But maybe the problem is on my side
Next thing: when I click on the ad panel below, it tryes to open the ad in the Meebo window – luckily Firefox asked me before performacing

Please put a way to clear the wallpaper on the Appearance menu. If I’m going to manage the wallpaper from the Appearance menu, I should be able to fully manage it instead of having to find it in the Preferences menu.

I wouldn’t be so sure. Meebo is gaining ground in the corporate world as an alternative where installing IM clients is usually strictly forbidden.
I’m with ccmandrill in that my choice of wallpaper never has words on it, never is a band, movie or TV show and almost always is abstract art; often 3D.
And as someone who works in the industry, I can assure you that the world of internet marketing does not revolve around teenage girls…

The layout looks pretty good, not hard to navigate once you figure out the dropdown menu.
Suggestions:
I would like to see a “none” or “no wallpaper” option on the Appearance screen rather than having to go into the Preferences box to clear the wallpaper. The “recently used” history is nice tho’.
Where is the “custom” option so you can load your own. The current selection of wallpapers is just sad. I agree with the other comments about needing some wallpapers that are just artwork or basic graphics, especially if we can’t load our own. The wallpapers feel too commercialized and don’t come close to representing all the folks who use Meebo.

Hi Greg! It’s really good news, but I can’t use the Appearance Panel. It doesn’t work on my profile. I tried in different machines (Mac and PC). Even tried cleaninig the cache. It shows a message claiming an interruption in the connection. Need some assistant over here. And one bizzare fact: most of the ads shown on the Google Ads are either from Skype or MSN. It seems a bit contraditory to me. Thanks.

Wallpaper chooser is great – but would love more options. As another person mentioned, your audience is much more broad than the ones choosing the different music options. I would love to be able to link my Webshots desktop to this one – I like pretty and that would be stupendously pretty!

I agree that it would be nice to upload your own images. I am a Mt View resident and love meebo and the connection you guys have with multiple communities (residential and online). I traveled for work to the East Coast over a year ago and people were starting to find out about Meebo and use it. I was very proud that you guys were from Mt View and that I regularly pass your office on walks through downtown. But Tom, why do you think it is that the posts on these blogs are by and large from kids who have no responsibilities, and are basically using Meebo as a playtoy, as opposed to using it for serious purposes? You can count the posts on one hand that come from people who have something serious to say or ask, as compared to an avalanche coming clearly from kiddies just venting their hormones (who probably don’t even understand what you and I are talking about here).

It’d be cool to have an interface where I can upload my own wallpaper designs to my meebo account with an option to share them with other users. The wallpapers you offer are all somewhat commercial, too commercial for my taste. If you depend on advertising revenues though feel free to discard my suggestion

When I click on Appearance I get the transparent layer which has underneath it a window that tells me there’s a problem with my connection (which there isn’t btw). If you would like screen grabs let me know. I’m using IE6.

thank you finnally for giving us, more backgrounds! i ♥ how you can click on it and see it right there, instead of you having o click on it, then have to exit oput of it, just to see the picture in the background. its much better than how it was before! thanx a bunch!!

Your lack of response to meebo users, time and time again, has shown that you do not care enough about your feedback to make minor changes.
After not giving us the option to change our wallpapers for months, you take away wallpapers that aren’t commercialized at all… (solid, one color wallpapers) Nor do you give us the option of uploading our own (though I could understand the reason behind that one) or give us a half-decent array of wallpapers. Why must all of them be commercial? Do you feel that having non-commercial wallpapers would be undercutting meebo’s sponsors? So you would ignore the feedback of hundreds of meebo users for the sake of your sponsors?

meebo is the best msn program on-line
