*Meebo Update* We are planning some maintenance that will take place sometime this Saturday, August 23, between 16:00-18:00 PDT ( 23:00-01:00 UTC). If all those numbers make your brain hurt, that’s 4-6PM California time! We are hoping to avoid any outage, but Meebo *might* be down for up to half an hour. Have a great weekend! *End Update*
I recently took a trip to Thailand with some friends, and I gotta say that it’s a freaking awesome place! From amazing jungles, to beautiful Wats (temples), to friendly people, Thailand is a great place to visit.
After spending two days in crazy-hectic Bangkok, which was fantastic, we headed out to more-mellow-but-still-somewhat-hectic Chiang Mai. One of the more interesting stories: we took a trek into the jungle with a guide named Batman who was totally hilarious and charismatic. After a sweaty, dehydrating day of hiking, we spent the night at the Long Neck village, eating great food, meeting wonderful people from across the globe, and buying supplies from a makeshift 7-Eleven! The next day, we went river rafting and spent as much time stuck on rocks as we did rafting down the river (ouch!).
After Chiang Mai, we headed out to Koh Phangan and spent a week in one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Honestly, while most of that week was spent lying on beaches, we did spend some time exploring the island, on foot and on ATV. We went to a Shiva moon party, which aas far as I can tell is a rave in the jungle, and had lunch at the Garden of Eden restaurant which is perched on some rocks, overlooking the Had Yuan beach.
After Koh Phangan, we returned to Bangkok to catch our connecting flight back to California. All in all, it was an eye-opening experience, and I would highly recommend y’all check out Thailand if you get the chance!

Nice narrative. I’ve been to Thailand last year when I visited my cousins but I missed going to those beautiful parts you’ve mentioned. What I remember is we’ve gone to floating market, samphran elephant ground and king’s place. You’re right, Thailand is a wonderful place to visit. I’ll take note of those places you’ve mentioned when I get the chance to visit Thailand next time. Thanks for the info.

August 19th, 2008 at 1:40 am
Please stop spamming me with irrelevant stuff. If it’s to do with the Meebo service, fair enough, but I really don’t care what you do on your holidays.
August 19th, 2008 at 1:46 am
Glad you enjoyed your trip to Thailand. I’ve been there twice for almost a year total and love it very much. I’m currently back in Chiang Mai and making the most of it. I’m not sure when I’ll get to come back. Check out my travel blog if you want, I’ve been working hard to document some of the more mundane, but unseen scenes wandering around the neighborhood.

August 19th, 2008 at 4:13 am
thailand is a cool place indeed. just came back fm bangkok few weeks back. took the local tour, chaophraya river cruise and stopped over by the temple to feed the fish n to floating market. i’ve been to southern thai and some of the islands before. amazing, pure n non commercial places are my choice. have u experienced shower with sea water? well we experienced it in koh phi phi. weird at first but what an experience. had a small fishing boat hitch-hiked with the fisherman who was kind enough to take us along for his fishing trip
. marvellous!

yeah thats really great. i’ve always wanted to go to thailand. will someday
August 19th, 2008 at 5:07 am
I liked Thailand so much that after a 4 month work related visit in 2001, I’ve been going back every year since. Chiang Mai is a great place to visit to get out of the bustle of Bangkok. Samui is also nice, but it’s a bit more expensive and too many tourists
August 19th, 2008 at 5:27 am
That trip sounds fun. My friend recently went with his church and they helped out in an orphanage and then went sight seeing the next week. He said the people were very kind. I would like to go someday, but I’m wanting to go to Germany someday more then anything to see the Anne Frank Mueseum.
Thanks for sharing your travels with us!

Well, why didn’t you go to Hatyai, it lies on the southern part of thailand. I am an Indonesian, but have been 8.5 months living here for studying.
Hatyai is a small city with great culinary. if someday, you go back for trip to thailand..i suggest you to visit Hatyai..take a connecting plane from bangkok to hatyai. it takes about an hour by plane.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:39 am
Shiva moon party! u went to a psychedelic trance nature party? thats very fortunate as you really need to be in the know to find such things. The ones here stateside are very underground.. well they are above ground just in the middle of nowhere.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:43 am
i was born in thailand! have you been to the island of phuket? if u havent then you havent seen the half of thailand. to say hi in thai, i hope u know,is (Sawa-dee). glad you went there. where did u stay, like a hotel?
August 19th, 2008 at 6:45 am
All I can say is, who cares? Spend your time developing more features compatible with the other im services. You are not our friends, your intern’s lunch choices are boring if not out right stupid. Who cares that you are working on new wall paper, who isn’t.
Use this space to educate your consumers, not to pat yourselves on your collective backs saying how grand you are, you’re not.
August 19th, 2008 at 6:48 am
Sounds like some fun when you leave out the bugs part of the jungle hike, would also be interested to know if and how much it rained while you were there?
Go adventure!
August 19th, 2008 at 7:13 am
This is for the user who posted above, under the name Edmund. I find this section very interesting to read. Everything about a company does not need to be boring, hard work. Meebo is showing us that it can be fun too.
This sounded like a lot of fun! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
August 19th, 2008 at 7:38 am
who are you???????//????????????????/
August 19th, 2008 at 7:39 am
nice to meet you
i am from VN
August 19th, 2008 at 7:41 am
Woow, you sounded like you had a REALLY good time! Lucky you.
I live in London and this summer I went around Asia and am in Prague now…
Firstly, I think YOU would REALLY enjoy Langkawi, Malaysia (if you haven’t already been in Malaysia). There’s so much to do… similar to the stuff you did. We went like kayaking, parasailing, went to beaches, walked around a lot in jungle places with a waterfall. Anyway, I had so much fun I feel that I should enlighten the world about it! So go to Langkawi!!!
Secondly, I also went to Bangkok. Did you not find it really upsetting… I mean the amount of poverty and how sad it was to see so many beggars that were mutilated? (unless you didn’t see any). I wasn’t expecting it but there were loads and unfortunatly I got so upset that we ended up staying in the hotel. But I wish I had done as much as you did.

August 19th, 2008 at 10:25 am
been there done that – almost the same itinerary as you! loved it – it was back in 1989 but – loved it and will do it again soon!
August 19th, 2008 at 10:51 am
To comment on Edmund above, I think this section was somewhat interesting, if you don’t like it don’t read it. I’m sure this is far more entertaining to most then the usual Meebo blogs about the system and new programs, etc.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:00 am
sounds nice
August 19th, 2008 at 11:18 am
First I wanted to say I’d love to go.
How was getting around without speaking the language? (assuming)
That’s what’d I’d worry about missing out on.
Second, I think as another poster commented, it has nothing to do with the meebo service. If we wanted to get to know them personally which the last two entries have been personal, we could go to the blog. It doesn’t make me like the company more if I know the people.
I’d like to see a setting in preferences whether we get that pop-up or not upon log in.
Maybe also specifying that if the content is about meebo services, we’d allow it/not allow.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:22 am
i really really miss being in thailandddd…………
August 19th, 2008 at 11:49 am
Omg please forward that itenerary along to me next! I would love to have an experience like that! I recently came from Tokyo but it wasnt really that kind of experience. Tokyo is too much like New York! Thailand sounds like the place to be! Please share the info if you can!
Thanks
)
August 19th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Edmund stop being a hater. I like their travel stories! It gives ME ideas for places to go and things to see! Furthermore MEEBO IS AWESOME! So if they want to pat themselves on the back for being great. LET THEM! Why dont you go develop something awesome, or just be quiet and let them be them. You have a lot of nerve being so demanding about a FREE SERVICE! get over YOURSELF!
August 19th, 2008 at 11:59 am
Sounds like a truly cool experience. Thanks for sharing . I have to ask, where are you from because the “ya’ll” at the end has me curious. (-:
August 19th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
Oh and BTW…ditto on Mona’s comment to Edmund. Edmund’s working for the man…and the man is not so fun. Marketing has changed, get with it. This is likely one of the best marketing tools I’ve seen. Build the relationship first and then you might get someone to listen to your features and the boring stuff Edmund likes.
August 19th, 2008 at 12:18 pm
Awsome. I sooo wanna g there. Iheard it is 1 of the most beautiful places in teh world
August 19th, 2008 at 12:25 pm

Look I am glad you had a good time but you should do some research into what really goes on in thailand not what you see remember your eyes can lie because people can make things look beautiful when terrible things are actually happening to other people you just don’t see it.
August 19th, 2008 at 2:55 pm

August 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
Hi Bro,
Excellent! Nice place to visit this year. Thank you for sharing your wonderful journey in Thailand. I wish to visit that place this year but am still thinking of some other ways to earn & save money for my trip.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
AWESOME!!!
August 19th, 2008 at 3:41 pm
What the crap? Did everyone decide to go to Thailand this summer? Like half of my boyfriend’s friends and coworkers went and got back this week. Crazy irony there.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I just returned from Thailand! I was in Phang-nga with a group of student journalists from the University of North Carolina. We were documenting life after the tsunami and just general southern Thailand culture. Our website, andamanrising.org, will be public very soon.
August 19th, 2008 at 4:08 pm
hejhej,
I’m going of to thailand in november for 3 months… I’m a student architecture, not rich and looking for some nice thailand places to visit, by which I mean: the non-super-tourist things.
So if you have some ‘you-realy-have-to-go/eat/go hiking/take a boat/drink/lay down/wathever…-there’ it would be super if you could let me know!
greets! sofie

August 19th, 2008 at 5:45 pm
cool, i have the experience of doing some what of that stuff. like i went to thailand and i had so much fun!! looking at temples and meeting new people everyone was so kind but a lil boy that was kinda grumpy
i went up there with my dad and 2 friends i barely saw my dad though me and meh friends where way to busy having fun. we went river rafting in the same place you did and we bumped into alot of rocks too it does hurt i scraped my arm on one.. i was being stupid.. my arm was hurting!!! be carefull when yuo do that stuff it gets kinda scary if you never did it before exspecially on rough waters not mellow waters where you can go on and go threw slowly. thats what i did my first time cause we where camping my family is so fun to be with
during the summers mainly..but sept the bills are going up..and we kinda stopped having that much fun.
but other than that i suggest you go river rafting its so cool!!
2 days of vacation it was so fun it actuallly sadly was my first time the other times my parents said we are going and then we couldnt.. cause a delay popped up or they didnt want to. but when i went it was so awesome~~
i also went to six flags
August 19th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

August 20th, 2008 at 3:34 am
Thailand is a great country. I’m visiting some (Thai) friends there next week and I can’t wait to meet them after 4 years. Thai people are fantastic, always in good mood, always smiling. Such a pity it’s 12 long hours from Paris.
August 20th, 2008 at 3:54 am
Ha, i’m in thailand right now, volunteering a the WFFT animal rehabilitation center. Spending 6 weeks here for just about $1000, all food and accomdation taken care of. The animals are amazing and you meet tons of people as they are always coming and going. THanks meebo for making it possible to stay in touch at home!
If you do end up doing something like volunteering, make sure you schedule in time to travel!

cool.. i think i’ll visit Thailand next.
August 20th, 2008 at 5:08 am
hey thats cool for you, but what does your story have to do w/ meebo????????
kinda seems like ya’ll are starting to take advantage of your mass audience with ads and stuff – which makes sense, dont get me wrong – but it dont make sense to use your update/welcome message to talk about non-meebo things cuz whats to stop you from promoting brands/products next if you get the right asking price???????
August 20th, 2008 at 5:10 am

Gah, every day I come into work, sit in my little worker-fattening pen (cubicle) and fire up Meebo, only to be confronted by yet another fabulous travelog. I wish you guys would write more about working 70 hour weeks, eating ramen for lunch at your desk and being all stressed out from the burden of making meebo more awesome for us. Harumph.
August 20th, 2008 at 10:43 am
Hey man:
I had a great time in Bangkok too, and wouldn’t trade any part of my life for the experience that i had. I was there in April 2008.
I like there so much, and i even have a second thought about living there a few months out of the year. I know, i know, that probably is just a dream for me, hehe
Thanks for the blog.

Yes Thailand is awesome. I did almost three months there 2 years ago. I have to say this is not the best time of the year to go. It is the rainy season. Best time to go is Jan-March. There is a lot more to do than Chaing Mai and Ko Pahnh Yan. The south islands like Ko Pi Pi, Ko Lanta.. and beyond.. I plan to go back in Jan for 2-3 weeks.. I know the place like the back of my hand now.. and never can get enough
August 20th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
Cool summer trip!!!
Would invite you to visit Philippines in your next trip.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Then I suggest u try Vietnam. Especially Saigon at night. I’ve been there regularly and theres always things to do, and pretty unexpensive too, which is a bonus!!!!
August 20th, 2008 at 7:18 pm
Philippines are better.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:27 pm
maybe you can stop by the philippines sometime, it’s a lot like thailand here only better
August 20th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
South East Asia is a great place to visit and relax. Maybe you can try visiting Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines. We have nice beaches and jungles. And you can also visit the Rainforest Music Festival (just ended last month). It was in Sarawak of Malaysia (Borneo Island) and it was held every year.
Don’t forget to try the variety of foods while you are here because we Asian really love to eat! You can try the tasty n smelly Durian (the thorny fruit and we called it the King of fruit) or even the hot sambal belacan (chilli mix with prawn paste).
If you want to relax, there are lot’s of islands around here, the Sipadan Island in Sabah (borneo island) is the best place currently.
August 20th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

August 22nd, 2008 at 2:42 am
I’m planning to go backpacking in Thailand early next year. Any tips?
August 22nd, 2008 at 3:47 am
Hey, I’m honestly extremely interested in this trip you took.
I’ve taken previous travels to Italy and Belize. I’m an anthropology major and very interested in the temples, ruins, forest caves etc heh.
I was wondering whether you had a more comprehensive blog or travel logue of this trip anywhere? I’d really like to know more details on the specific places you went so I might be able to plan a trip out there and maybe hit some of these interesting places that are away from the normal tourist traps.
Also what’s this rave party? Sounds fun.

hey, yeah, thailand is really a great place to visit..
August 22nd, 2008 at 6:35 am
Hey! I’m in thailand now, in Pattaya Beach. It’s really a hot place to vist. Today it was about 95 and humid as he11. Went to Bangkok but it’s too crowded there. Get away from Bangkok as fast as you can if you come to Thailand.
I’m going to Germany and Russian when I leave here. I don’t think it will be as hot there. BTW Ann Frank Museum is in Amsterdam Netherlands. I was there last fall. I’m going back as soon as I can. It’s a great place to waste a week or two.
