Did you hear?
Okay, so Elaine, Seth, and I have never been the cool, popular kids in high school, so we’re not really used to being the center of attention. Seth was the kid with asthma. Sandy had crazy bangs and braces. Elaine actually wore knickers to school one day. So imagine our reaction when the rumor mill reached us, and we hear that meebo is a popular topic around Silicon Valley. Friends-of-friends-of-friends told us that their friends-of-friends-of-friends were wondering whether A) meebo was going to stay small (could it last?), B) take funding from VCs (what’s the business model?), or C) get acquired by some company (would they really sell out?).
Being first time entrepreneurs, we’ve been asking ourselves the exact same questions, and after thinking about it long and hard, the answer is actually pretty simple: always do what’s best for meebo and meebo’s users.
We love that people like our service, and more importantly, find us useful enough to make meebo a part of their daily lives. Seth, Elaine, and I have worked very hard to keep your meebo experience the best that it can be — with our limited resources. Every day Elaine and I wish we had a few extra hours here and there to add one more requested feature. Seth wishes he had coffee in his veins! We’re growing at a fantastic pace, but the three of us are realizing that to uphold the high standard we’ve set for ourselves, we will need help. We want to see meebo flourish and based on long hours of thought and discussion, we’ve decided to take a first round of funding. As of 4pm Thursday afternoon, we’ve officially closed a financing round from Sequoia Capital. So, the answer is B.
Many of you have asked, how is meebo a business? Well, we’ve got some great ideas, some of which are crazy, but some have the potential to be really interesting. There are easy, traditional ways of making money (no worries, flashy, invasive ads aren’t our answer!) and there are many other possible paths that we’re going to explore — all of which will be subject to user feedback and critique, as usual.
Bottom line is, meebo’s all about user experience — with funding, or without, that will never change. We will always strive to build a great user product, and we hope that you’ll love what we have in store.
cheers,
sandy

Meebo receives funding from Sequoia Capital
Sooo it seems the rumors have been true: the ajax / web-based instant messenger site named meebo took external funding from Sequoia Capital to fund future growth and business development. Nice to hear keeping in mind they’ve been around the block only…

Ummm, to the meebo staff, really really thanks a lot for making meebo! Because of meebo, our whole class was able to help each other in our lab sessions since the school doesnt allow IMs installed in the PCs. It’s quite a long story, but I am happy to say that meebo has been a part of our success!
Thanks again and keep up the good work! Hope you guys won’t resort to ad bombing! lolz~

Well just to reaffirm that meebo is such a hot topic in the valley, there has been a few discussions on meebo in internal Yahoo dev mailing list. Most people have positive things to say, but the paranoid (security) people here were unhappy that we are willing to give out our password to random website. All I have to say is that meebo is not “random” anymore! It’s prettiest looking web-base cross IM client and that its poplarity is well deserved. Keep up the good work! ( But just don’t let us catch up to ya

Meebo and the Coming Battle For the Software Long Tail
I’m extremely disappointed at the lack of vision (or maybe just imagination?) here in the valley. Meebo just raised ~$3.5M at a pre-money of ~$10M from Sequoia and all we get is a collective moan and groan from the blogosphere on what the hell …
December 17th, 2005 at 8:29 pm

This kind of great news requires Coke diet deluxe, fellas =)
Congratulations!
I’m excited to see where being funded is going to take meebo.
Although i’m not much of a business person i see some possible setbacks. Competition for example. With more and more publicity, some people might want to push into the business themselves. Another is future products/applications. Will it still focus around IMs?
I trust Sandy, Elaine and Seth to turn meebo into a successful business, but that’ll take some time i fear. I am however looking forward to see if they’ll employ more people to help around and perhaps not live in poverty
December 18th, 2005 at 11:41 am
[...] For a while, the word on the street has been that Meebo, barely 13 weeks old has been out raising some cash. But did they? Apparently yes! The amount of money they have raised is $3.5 million, at about $9 million pre-money valuation from Sequoia Capital, and Roelof Botha has joined the company’s board. The company has been growing pretty rapidly, about 250,000 logins and 7 million messages as of yesterday, and the Meebo Musketeers have built a good platform. [...]

[...] Once Sandy from meebo announced the funding (BTW, Sandy looks familiar, I think I went to high school with her), both Om Malik, Paul K, and their readers (read the comments at TechCrunch too) wondered aloud why a thin client IM aggregator deserves to get funded by Sequoia of all firms. I suspect the key metric that got the partners over there excited wasnt their incredible week over week user growth but the average duration of the visits. Because IM is the stickiest of all apps, Meebo has essentially created a persistent connection/relationship with their users . . . the first requirement for becoming the third “desktop” . . . (windows and the browser were the 1st and 2nd). [...]

Hi guys…
Several propositions for you to make your message aggregator compete with Trillian and GAIM (it’s cool, but needs some additions IMHO):
Support for RSS feeds reading
Support for email notifications (MSN, Yahoo, Google Talk)
Full support for bidirectional writing (Hebrew, Arabic and othe ME languages – because neither Trillian nor GAIM have it
Release of a desktop client (if fits your business model – but I think this client should be released anyway)

Alex.
