*UPDATE* Thanks to all our super-cool users who have given us some leads on office space! We have discussed a bit and think we could actually do anything from 10,000 sq ft up to 20,000 sq ft. So if you know of something that might be awesome for us in the Mountain View area, let us know!
I’m sure a lot of you have heard of the concept of a “hack day” at various other companies, a day where people can hack up really neat projects that might be outside the scope of their normal day-to-day jobs. At Meebo, we’ve implemented a similar concept but we’ve expanded it to include non-technical hacks as well. We try to hold one every month or so, and we’ve had creative projects like small plane flybys over the Meebo rooftop, workout day, and my personal (and biased) favorite: the bathroom occupancy detector. (I, along with 2 others, worked all weekend to get the sensors working properly =p)
Here at Meebo’s Mountain View office, the ladies’ restroom is just 1 stall. Back when there weren’t as many ladies at the office, this wasn’t such a big deal. However, now that the contingent has grown quite a bit, there’s often what I like to call “bathroom deadlock.” The restroom is located in a small hallway near the back of the office, and if it’s occupied, you end up wasting an interruption in your work zen.
To solve this problem, we installed a motion sensor and hooked it up to a handy internal web page where you can check to see if the restroom is occupied or vacant. Let me tell you, it’s pretty awesome (it’s splashed with the Charmin bears to add the extra bathroom atmosphere).
However, recently the sensor broke, and now that we have even more nice ladies here at Meebo, deadlock is becoming more and more of a common occurrence. This is yet another sign to us that we really have to move.
Meebo’s almost 50 employees now and it’s amazing to see us reach this stage in our company life cycle. Unfortunately, the current office (as awesome as it is) is becoming a bit cramped (the kitchen regularly turns into a bike rack garage). The last 2 times we’ve had to move, I’ve written blog posts to ask for your help and we’ve gotten a lot of great leads from that.
So, I’m asking for your help again. We’d love to stay in the Mountain View area, and we’re looking for a space 16,000-20,000 square feet large. We love wide, open spaces and if you know of any, please let us know! If you find us a new office, we promise to take you out to lunch and give you a t-shirt.
And then maybe I can finally go to the bathroom when I need to =p.
cheers,
sandy

Ok, you’re looking for real estate but would San Joaquin County (Stockton) be too far for you? It’d be a relief from the bay’s rental rates (at least until the bay area people start expanding to here). I’m doing a website for California American Realty, Inc. and they primarily are in my area of Stockton and such and I don’t know about 10k feet space but there’s for certain 5k space available on 630 Weber Ave. by S. Ranchhod Properties, one of the family’s businesses, they sure might have bigger ones, if you ask they would either have space available somewhere or they’d know who would have that much space for you, they’re really friendly. If you move here I might like to work for you, whatever opportunities as an intern you have. Tell the realtor Bali that I sent you (I’m Donald R. Anderson) his contact info is California American Realty, Inc. 4225 E. Hammer Lane, Stockton CA 95212 E-mail AmericanHomes @ Comcast.net | T. 209 952 6911 | F. 209 952 0232 and my contact info is poetsespresso @ gmail.com

One restroom only? Maybe a good reason not to work for Meebo.
September 28th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
love your product. my wife works for a commercial real estate firm in the bay and may have what you’re looking for in Mountain View (7,000 to 14,000 SF near Google). My email should attach to this, drop a line if you’re interested or post another way to reach you. Cheers.

Hi Sandy,
I like the motion sensor idea.. but maybe you can take it further. I notice that offices here in France already have motion sensors but they use it for the lights.. which is a good way to conserve energy: when no one’s there the lights will be automatically off and as soon as somebody enters it’s lights on.
Do pass my regards to Elaine, I haven’t had the chance to take pictures of the Meebo t-shirt she sent last year!

I meant motion sensors in the bathroom!
September 29th, 2008 at 5:35 am
Maybe you should put cameras in addition to the sensors in the bathroom as well.
September 29th, 2008 at 5:40 am
wicked cool idea. do you have that project documented somewhere? are you willing to sell it or something? it would be very very useful in the office I work at
September 29th, 2008 at 5:59 am
In addition to the web page showing status of the ladies room, I would think that Meebo would additionally have an IM bot that would show status.
September 29th, 2008 at 6:12 am

OSHA has specific guidelines for the number of toilets that must be available for particulars numbers of workers at a company. If meebo is not providing enough toilets, they’re breaking the law.

There is a really nice campus on 379 N. Whisman Rd in Mountain View that is currently not occupied. It was formally Mercury Interactive before it was bought out by HP, and also the other tenant – Reliant Technology – in the same compound was just bought out recently and they are moving in Jan 09. It’s got a beach valleyball court, basketball court, and hockey court.
You may want to double check there.
Btw, I would love a free Meebo tshirt. Large please.
Thanks,
Allan
September 29th, 2008 at 8:00 am
Perhaps you can try a magnetic sensor instead of the motion detector?
These are really inexpensive sensors used to determine the state of windows and doors in home and business security sensors, and can be purchased from a local Radio Shack for a few dollars. Hookup to the existing two-wire system should be a snap.
Cheers!
September 29th, 2008 at 8:39 am
I used to date a girl in Mountain View and find, no offense to the kind people who live there, that it is absolutely boring there. I live and work in Santa Cruz and it is heavenly.
Here is why MEEBO should consider moving to Santa Cruz:
1) Santa Cruz is awesome and MEEBO is awesome
2) You can take your lunch break on the cliffs overlooking the Monterey Bay featuring sea lions, pelicans, sea anenomies, star fish and sea otters
3) You can take your lunch break in the redwood forest amongst trees that are over 300+ feet tall and many centuries old
4) You drive against traffic on Hwy 17 on your commute — piece of cake
5) MEEBO is weird (in a good way) and we should keep Santa Cruz weird.
6) You could hire me as a writer and I don’t want to commute. I used to live in L.A. — no more commuting for Marvo
Think about it? Awesome!

A bathroom occupancy sensor…a perfect comment on the beautiful problem-solving power of technology and its Big Brother pause-inducing watcher qualities: Yea!, I know when the bathroom is free so I can go…Boo! The possibility of everyone knows how much time one spends in the bathroom.
Cool doings on the project overall and for introducing me to the Hack Day term. Thanks and good luck & humor with the move.

The bathroom webpage project sounds cool to do. I have read the other replies. You cannot put cameras in a public/shared bathroom. That is illegal and not to mention distasteful. You could rig it up to generate an auto email stating that the bathroom is occupied. Oh and of course the classic “occupied” light (wire it up with a light bright).
September 29th, 2008 at 10:28 am
I think a motion sensor is overbuilding and inefficient for bathroom occupancy. What is the delay after motion for which you continue to show “occupied”? What if someone is, um, sitting pretty still, for a little time? Anyway, I used to design airplanes for Boeing, mostly the outside of them (Aerodynamics), but for a brief period in the 90’s, I hid from layoffs by working on the interior. An airplane’s occupancy sensor just works on the state of the door lock. Decidedly low tech, but also pretty foolproof (as long as no-one crawls under or climbs over the stall walls to get out
. Good luck on space. I still mean to stop by and say hello at some lunch, but never is there time!
September 29th, 2008 at 10:33 am
Hi there,
nice smart idea the sensor..what about a little program to handle the lines in case you see that the bathroom is busy? Just like what you do at the grocery store with numbers..
Anyway if you would like to move to Tuscany I have a place where you could stay with a breathtaking view.. let me know..

My company located in Foster City/San Mateo moved recently and now, the entire building we moved from is vacant (3 full floors). The office is located at 1800 Gateway Drive, San Mateo, CA 94404, easily accessible from the 92 and 101. It’s a great office space and it’s across the freeway from the Bridgepointe Plaza shopping center! My company has over 150 employees and a full floor and a half fit us quite nicely.
The property management company is Equity Offices and you can find contact information at http://www.equityoffice.com.
Good luck!

I like sensor idea, but I’m a little dissappointed that a company that does IM software, which is the utimate presense/aware model you can have for something like this, would not incorporate it into there IM app. That way you could have something called bathroom that would tell you if it is online or not. If online, bathroom in use, not online, bathroom not in use.
September 30th, 2008 at 7:12 am
Good luck on your search. In the meantime, why dont you use the Men’s room!? Thats what I do when I have to go bad. Its not occupied half the time as a women’s restroom. Hopefully its clean. The Meebo men dont strike me as dirty derelicts who leave the bathroom disgusting. So yeah, mens room here we come! hahaha
September 30th, 2008 at 7:18 am
Troy its a motion detector, not a camera. Pay attention. A lot of bathrooms have motion detectors. The one where i work has one to save energy. When theres no motion in there for a certain amount of time, the lights go off, and come back on when someone enters.

You can look up some offices in San Bruno. There’s a very nice office park with Class A office buildings between El Camino Real & Cherry Ave, which houses the likes of Youtube and Gap.
It’s not too far from Mountain View, has some great places for lunch nearby, and is in the part of San Bruno that doesn’t have weather that’s as bad as San Francisco or Daly City (though it’s not far, hehe).
September 30th, 2008 at 10:18 am
Hey there, Sandy!
I don’t live in the States (and I’ve only been to Cali, specifically LA, once) so I can’t help you with the new office, unfortunately.
However, I love Meebo and I’d love a shirt to broadcast it. Can I buy one somewhere? (Yes, I am willing to pay for it!)
Thanks much from Canada…
September 30th, 2008 at 10:29 am
Sandy,
What you and others on your team wrote about Meebo is a very important part of the company history. When Bill Gates and his team moved from New Mexico, to Seattle thirty years ago, no one knew Microsoft would, one day, become “Number one” (or two or three…). Keep writing and build your company history. Besides, the stories are interesting.

The bathroom problem reminds me of the situation at a CMU dorm. The Coke machine was down in the lobby, and some did not want to trek down there only to find it out product (they go through a lot of pop!). So, a former colegue of mine (from Adobe) implemented a ‘finger’ daemon in the machine and wired it to the internet. Now, before leaving the comfort of one’s dormitory room for a refreshing beverage, one can check on the availability of sodas in the machine with “finger coke@cmua”.

does the sensors detect methane levels?
September 30th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Why don’t you just fix the sensor. It can’t be too difficult or maybe you could find some computer engineer from SJSU to do it for you. I graduated last fall and did some projects like automated window blinds and a sonar obstacle avoidance RC car. I bet there are other SJSU students that like to play with little projects like that bathroom one. It sounds fun to work where you are
I am a bit jealous…

There is plenty of office space in Madison, Wisconsin for rent. We’re one of the top cities in the nation for liveability, the area is quite recession-proof, we have more than one season, have lots of bike paths, two beautiful lakes, and good skiing is only 30 minutes away. If you’re open to Palo Alto, check out HP’s southern buildings off Page Mill Road and Peter Coutts. Great location close to Mountain View, near the CalTrain station at California Avenue and lots of huge, sunny space … and I work for HP in Cupertion but heard the Palo Alto real estate group is looking to rent it out in the next few months.
Good luck!

Hello Meebo, i was wondering on your time-stamp system does it do individual timezones or is it Universal 24-Hour time…because if it ran on individual timetamps it would make it difficult to tell when something is from a Past date or falsified in a manner to make up a random time-stamp. Because during a stay in my susual RolePlay roost i wa sin an argument about someone saying BRB and acording to my chat logs it was 20:07 and she reposted her “brb” post and teh timestamp was 16:??

If your bathroom is really busy then also you can make an application for reservation!!! Oh..and by that way one can also tell who is more alarming smell detector.

Come to OHIO! Commercial real estate is DIRT CHEAP and there are tons of out-of-work IT professionals! Look at Google. They opened an office in Pittsburgh. I heard the manager there was politely told to stop putting up dirt cheap housing slides in his presentations because too many people were defecting to Pittsburgh from the other locations. No traffic problems either in Cleveland near where I live. My commute is almost relaxing. And centralized servers = better performance for everyone. So when you decide to come here, I’ll be sending you my resume!

While checking office space be sure to also check how you would like it setup/arranged/configured, after all your people is your most valuable asset, right?; you may already be familiar with the following article but, hey, just in case: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/BionicOffice.html

There are plenty of open office buildings in the area around Old Middlefield Road and Ellis St. It’s a convenient location, close to Hwys 237, 85, 101 as well as to Central Expwy, El Camino.
There are older, lower-priced buildings available, as well as some upscale newer ones. (E.g., the old Netscape site.)
Symantec may have space available in their site, since they’ve been downsizing recently. They have a gymnasium and cafeteria, as well.

You know where they have LOTS!! of office space……. Manhattan!!!! C’mon Meebo, move over to the East Coast already! If Manhattan is too pricy, there is always Brooklyn, Long Island, and Westchester. Technically, New Jersey is there too, but no one wants to be in Jersey!
White Plains has some great office space really cheap, and it is a short express train from Grand Central to downtown White Plains.
Think about it….

I gave this information to my Mom, who only works with limited clients. However, she just closed a phenomenal, unheard-of deal with a top surgeon, who is recognized in the United States and Europe. She even went to get the wavers and everything else that he needed so that the closing was effortless. I passed this on to her because the deal isn’t about making money to her. It’s about finding the best deal for her clients.
Anyway, her email is: jennymcneal@aol.com So, feel free to write her for whatever you need. Hopefully she can find a building for you guys. She’ll do her best to get you guys a top deal. =)
