Hi everyone,
meebo is finally out! Our AJAX IM client is hopefully something you’ll find fun and useful.
We’ve been working really hard to get the alpha out to everyone. We’ve been staying up late furiously fixing bugs and tweaking things — we hope you like what you see (and use!).
We’re compatible with AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, and MSN and we’re pretty well tested on IE and Firefox. We’re mainly a Windows and Linux bunch, so we don’t have a lot of Mac access… If anyone wants to help out, shoot us an email
We were a bit surprised when we heard about another AJAX IM client through the blogs but we’ve got a different take on it. Check meebo out and let us know what you think at the forum. We’ve only got one server up so be gentle…
cheers!

Cool product, ever considered to release the serverside source too ?
September 14th, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Hey guys! Congratulations! I just tested it on Safari and it seems to work at a basic level! This is going to be very useful when travelling or at the airport.
If you want a Mac loaner, lemme know, I’ll be glad to hook you up. We have a store in Palo Alto.

Meebo
This might not be much of a problem for you all, but for me whenever I am not at home, such as at my Dad’s or at school, it’s hard to keep up to date with my friends on AIM. There is now a good solution for this. I first saw an online AJAX…
September 14th, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Very cool.
September 14th, 2005 at 11:44 pm
Guys, Great job. However, I would appreciate it if you added a privacy statement on the site somewhere.
September 15th, 2005 at 12:15 am
I didn’t try your alpha because it worries me that my username and password are getting logged (even if inadvertantly) somewhere. Although there a lot of people out there that don’t know any better (evidenced by the success of phishing scams), I’m sure that a lot of potential customers out there aren’t going to be willing to enter their username and password on a third party site.
I might in theory trust (say) Vanguard with my passwords since I already trust them with my money. But it doesn’t go much beyond that.
I’m still planning to create a new account to test your product out though, since I made a javascript chat recently, from which I was referred to your site.
September 15th, 2005 at 1:10 am
I’m just waiting for it being Free Software and for Jabber support too…

Meebo is great! I have a 5 hour wait between classes once a week, I thought that that would be a great time to arrange appointments or work out details with models or other photorgaphers. Sadly, however, my school blocks the use of IM’s. Meebo is the answer to my prayers! Thanks for keeping my productive!
September 15th, 2005 at 12:50 pm
When will other features be integrated… like… sign in invisible mode on Yahoo and etc.
September 15th, 2005 at 4:06 pm
Invisible mode signin would be wonderful, and if you had the capacity to have a user account so we could all signup and auto login in one click.
September 15th, 2005 at 9:04 pm
keep it feature-light to preserve speed and clean look, have it perform core functions well, and add features slowly. oh, and get bought by google, not microsoft
September 16th, 2005 at 6:24 pm
Hey Abbi – We’d love to grab a Mac loaner if you could spare one. Would def like to get full functionality on Safari if we can. Can you shoot an email to comments@meebo.com with your contact details?
Thanks!
Seth

Hey guys,
Love what you did with UI: Very User friendly, simple and clean design. I hope you do not add too many features that would clutter up the interface. It would be nice as they said if you had some way of knowing for sure that there is no physical or logical storage of passwords on ure servers
.
But cheers, and Best of luck on your venture !!
Thanks,
J

Very nice work !
What is your objective ? Are you planning meebo as a business ?
In that case, I am interesting in having some details…for Business Garden.
Thanks,
Ronan / Business Garden
September 19th, 2005 at 4:33 pm
“Thanks” to have deleted my previous comment…
But why ?
Because I find your site and service great ?
or because I asked is you are planning a business with Meebo ?

September 19th, 2005 at 11:24 pm
Hey Ronan -
Sorry that your initial posting didn’t get up immediately. We have the software set to allow all posts to go straight to the forum, but apparently because you had multiple links in your posting, the software flagged it as potential spam. We’re definitely not censoring anyone, rest assured.
As to your question on meebo as a business:
Our top goal is to create a really useful IM client for people. We’re still working hard at that. meebo isn’t yet nearly as feature rich as we’d like it to be, so we’re listening to everyone in the forum and on the blog to figure out which features to add. However, we’ve also got some ideas on how we could turn meebo into a business once it’s truly full featured and highly useful. The ideas range from allowing third parties to integrate meebo into their webware / web content (a request we’ve seen a lot of through email) to charging for a premium version of meebo to ads (though very likely not contextual ads as we don’t want to make people uncomfortable!). The net is we’re not sure exactly how we’re going to turn meebo into a business, particularly while we focus on building the core product, but we’ll likely take the path most requested by users.

Meebo is brilliant. As a programmer and designer, I can honestly admit to work well done. There are however alot of skeptics and worried users who think their aim or other login info will be compromised by your service. To all those users, you have to realize that Meebo “HAS” to store your login infos, how else can it auto-login your accounts all at once. But realize, they encrypt it in their database beyond decyphering by those who don’t have Meebo’s “keys”. So on the SLIM chance that our login info is compromised from Meebo’s database server, it will be in an encrypted form… there’s no way for anyone to get your password in “plain text” since the encryption/decryption takes place on their servers which are firewalled and secure… they wouldn’t risk their entire Project by even risking letting our accounts get compromised… Think of it like an loan agency having access to your credit score and social security number and bank account info… you have to trust them… I trust Meebo more than that. Honestly, Meebo is actually MORE secure than your AIM client… why? 80% of computers have spyware installed on their computer… You most likely… Most of these spyware applications steal passwords.. AIM passwords are stored in the registry and are EASILY decyphered… I’ve done it myself… Meebo’s passwords are encrypted and stored on a firewalled database server with “more than nessacary” encryption, 1024bit is beyond any supercomputer’s reach anytime soom… you really have nothing to worry about… But that’s from me, i could list all my credentials but that’s silly. Anyway, thanks Meebo. You’re making life alot easier. ™
March 31st, 2006 at 10:40 am
I forgot to mention, when you login to your aim, msn, etc accounts from the main page and not your Meebo account, your password isn’t stored. If you click “save” checkbox, it stores your password into a Cookie locally on your computer so if your scared to store your passwords on Meebos servers, use that instead.

April 5th, 2006 at 8:28 pm
Nice. But I have some serious concerns about using this service. In your Terms of Service you say you are not affiliated or endorsed by yahoo,AOL,google, microsoft or jabber, my question is then without their blessings how will you stop them from blocking you guys from their servers ?
I would somewhat presume from a corporate culture perspective that perhaps google, yahoo and jabber may not block you but I am skeptical about AOL and microsoft especially since they tend to be “propreitary” and “less tolerant” of acess from clients that are not branded from them.
Can you post some clarifications on your site about how this is being handled ?
Without a clear written clarification this wonderful tool might end up being just another internet “cool hack” application that died its natural death. THe internet community is getting smarter and your users may not want to pledge their loyalty with this site without any indication of what your long term strategy is in dealing with the “big kahunas” who control backend. I know I dont have the time and energy to participate in a new cool thing and find that its been killed by a court order or made to disappear into oblivion by a large corporate interest.
Dont get me wrong, I am not trying to dampen the product or downplay its potential just that you have to clearly indicate what the story is on the service guarantee else you will be just another blip on the radar crashing before a take off ..
Congratulations again on a wonderful product.

[...] The young team (first-time entrepreneurs) – two IT girls from Stanford and one boy, who was with IBM and is a Yale graduate – only started with meebo 13 weeks ago and did manage to attrack major attention right from the start. With over 250,000 users daily using the in Ajax programmed application in order to chat over one or multiple IMs (MSN, AIM/ICQ, Jabber/GTalk and Yahoo! Messenger) simultaneously meebo is still in “alpha mode”. All in all, quite ambitious plans Sequoia has with them in order to judge this high valuation. Will be interesting to see how their business model evolves. [...]
