At meebo we keep a wall of post-notes where we track of all of the requested features from the blog, forum, and comments@meebo.com. When a feature is requested, it is moved up the queue. Today, you’ll probably notice a half dozen new features that we’re excited to release based upon everyone’s recent feedback.
1) Sound! A few weeks ago, Jennifer J emailed, “… it’s hard to know if someone is chatting with me if I don’t have the window in focus… are there any plans to implement notifier sounds? A little beep or even the system beep would really help.” Fortunately, Jian is a former DJ and one day he toted in his headphones, sound mixing board, and got to work. However, if you think silence is golden, you’ll notice a small audio button for disabling sound when you need to be discreet.
2) Mobile indicator This is one of those features that we would have never predicted would be so essential. However, the mobile request kept cropping up again and again. Most of the time Sandy is optimizing the backend but every once in a while she likes to dip her toes in the JavaScript too. The mobile indicator feature is all Sandy’s doing. If any of your buddies has forwarded their IMs to their mobile phones, you’ll notice a small mobile icon to the left of their names. If it weren’t for the forums we would have never realized how much-needed this feature really is!
3) IM anyone Check out the third icon from the left on the buddy list. Meebo users can message friends not included on their buddy lists or use this feature as a shortcut to pull up an IM window without searching through the buddy list and double-clicking on a name.
4) Emoticons We also posted an official emoticon page which will get linked to the wiki shortly. We’re planning on adding more in the future, so if you have any suggestions for ones you’d like to see, please feel free to let us know.
5) Navigate away prompt We know how frustrating it is to unintentionally lose your IM history because you clicked on the wrong link or hit the wrong key while messaging. Hari wrote, “If we sign out, ideally it should ask for confirmation and close window.” Now when someone navigates away from meebo, they’ll be asked to confirm that they want to leave meebo before closing their IM session if they have not already logged out. No more lost messages!
6) Lots of bug fixes I’m probably the most proud of all of the bug fixes that went into this release that might be harder to spot. First off, we fixed the IE5.5 issue (thanks so much zys and grebe who originally isolated the problem to IE5.x!), fixed a Firefox cursor issues, enabled right clicks in the IM window, and enabled more linking from the textarea.
We’re really proud of this release and we hope that everyone will enjoy the new features. A special thanks to Trina from Kansas City for all of the words of encouragement and to all of those who have taken time to give us feedback through the forum, the blog, and email. Let us know what you’d like to see next!
-Elaine

March 20th, 2006 at 2:50 am
Hello, the sound are cool but its annoying to hear a sound every time I write. My sugestion is to hear the sound only when a buddy types… not when I type
March 20th, 2006 at 6:23 am
I am very happy about the Firefox cursor bug fix!
March 20th, 2006 at 6:55 am
Hey, awesome new features, but I’d like to suggest that you should be able to click the links in the profile of your buddies.
Thanks, again, for the awesome browser-based chatting system.
March 20th, 2006 at 6:57 am
And also, I’d like to be able to have the ability to change and save my MSN display name. Thanks!
March 20th, 2006 at 7:56 am
Hi, I’m behind a proxy and only with your work I can go out !!!.
The sounds is very useful, but I can’t hear when somebody write me, just when I write.
March 20th, 2006 at 8:03 am
It just keeps getting better and better! Thanks!
March 20th, 2006 at 8:23 am
Excellent work! I’m really delighted to see the mobile indicator–that’s always been a problem for me, but now that you have it, meebo’s got everything I could want from an IM client (PLUS not having to download anything)!
Very impressive, folks–keep up the good work!
March 20th, 2006 at 8:57 am
Thanks for all the hard work to make meebo better. It is a great success, and keeps on improving all the time.
As for requests for emoticons that we would like, I would like to see the left hand and right hand hugs from MSN, ({) and (}).
March 20th, 2006 at 9:29 am
Hi i figured the sound was to notify me when someone was talking to me or online or something, but i can’t hear any sounds. I’m sure my volume is allll the way up and the icon is clicked showing the bars. Is it because I’m in firefox? maybe i’ll try something else

Great update and keep up the great work Team, Meebo is almost as good as my gaim in my opinion. I’m starting to love meebo ALOT, great work again and just remember when your up drinking x amount of coffee or caffinated drinks that there are members who love your work. Meebo is a great product and service and I cant wait to see the “finished” product. Also meebo has inspired me to learn ajax with my php. Once again, this is a great spot on the net and I enjoy it.
March 20th, 2006 at 11:29 am
Great Job guys! i’ve been telling all my friends about the site.. especially the ones who have to use the school’s computer lab and it takes forever to DL aim, yim, or start up msn messenger..

I know, is a Beta, but, meebo is nathing in this browser!
March 20th, 2006 at 12:36 pm
I think you should be able to have pictures like on msn.sarah xxx
March 20th, 2006 at 12:47 pm
I’ve got the same problem as Rachel. Don’t hear a beep, although my housemate, who’se using IE does hear beeps and boings.
When I try in IE it does give beeps and stuff, but very weak. Maybe that’s due to my sound-setup though…
March 20th, 2006 at 12:57 pm
I hear a very weak incoming beep, also. Too faint to notice!
You know what else would be super-useful? A blinking taskbar notification for incoming messages — I always miss them, it’s too hard to notice the scrolling title bar.
Keep up the good work!!
March 20th, 2006 at 1:07 pm
i’m using safari now and i still hear nothing, it won’t even load all the way in my internet explorer.

March 20th, 2006 at 2:02 pm
thanks for the updates. any chance you guys will be addressing the ‘apostrophe’ issue with gtalk. it’s the only thing that is preventing me from dropping the gtalk .exe altogether. once you’re able to correct it, i’ll complete my conversion to a full-blown meebo-head.
March 20th, 2006 at 2:04 pm
Gr8 work, im at skwl so i can finally use an msn to keep in touch with friends etc.
March 20th, 2006 at 2:10 pm
Excellent!!
I’m very thankful to those who sugested the “Navigate Away Promt” and to you Guys for implementing it to Meebo.
Most of times I open links that use the window Meebo is running. So I lost everything and have to re-login to Meebo.
Now with this feature I am able to stop those links and never loose chat history.
THANKS
March 20th, 2006 at 3:52 pm
Awesome updates! The only thing that was there and is now missing (that I liked) is that the title bar would flash when there was an incoming IM. If I’m not at my computer it was nice to see the text scrolling through to alert me that I missing an IM. Maybe turn that feature on when there’s no sound?
March 20th, 2006 at 3:53 pm
u guys r doing a realllly good job w/ all these enhancements, my fave so far is the phone feature that indicates if some one is logged on from their fone!!! i kept sending msgs to my buddy cuz i thought they were ‘online’ then i got a msg back that sed, my IM was forwarded to their cell phone, yikes…anyway , thanks!
March 20th, 2006 at 4:11 pm
This is great. I love how you guys pay attention to what the community requests. We love you guys!
March 20th, 2006 at 4:13 pm
Hey I’m uh not seeing how to turn the sound off… where is this elusive sound button?
March 20th, 2006 at 4:28 pm
Wow, I love the firefox cursor fix. The sound was the biggest thing for me, though, it’s perfect and it’s my main AIM client. Great work.
March 20th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
hey do u guys no a fake hotmail login or myspace? i need to get on asap
March 20th, 2006 at 4:59 pm
I like to use meebo very much. The new improvements are great! Kudos! More power to you!
March 20th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
WOW the new stuff is great! Meebo’s getting better and better by the moment
Only one problem yet persists, and that’s getting disconnected ever so often…. is there someway that could be put to an end? PLS
Thanks for the great site styll!
March 20th, 2006 at 5:43 pm

March 20th, 2006 at 5:52 pm

March 20th, 2006 at 6:04 pm
glad to see people are enjoying the sounds! Jess and adrienne and anyone else not seeing the sound icon, to hear the new meebo sounds, you’ll need to get the flash player plugin here: (http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer). We currently support versions 6 and on. We decided not to bother the folks at work who can’t have flash on their machines with those pesky plugin-upgrade messages.
some people are finding the receive sound hard to hear so we’ll be sure to bump that up.
Rachel and Bokkie, if you’re still having trouble hearing sounds after crankin up the volume, send us an email at comments@meebo.com and we’ll see if we can find out what’s going on.
Hi Dan, the sound icon is next to the ‘help’ link near the top of the page and can be clicked to toggle the sound on and off. If you’re using the same machine, it will remember your settings from last time too.
March 20th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
You guys have done some very outstanding work. You are truly innovators. Just so you know you help out more people than you think. I know of some Military members stationed in Iraq and elsewhere that utilize your services to talk to their spouses and family members, to keep them abreast on the members status and livlihood. Keep up the good work, you are moving in the right direction.
March 20th, 2006 at 7:04 pm
meebo is great, love it, but how about saving the messages! cause i cant! LOL
March 20th, 2006 at 7:27 pm

How i wish meebo supports ym conference..
March 20th, 2006 at 8:18 pm
I like the way you guyrs have updated the website!! I think its cool! But I have on suggestion! I think we should be able to send our buddy list to other screen names that we have *aim* and to be able to recieve other buddy lists from other screen names! That would be so great and I would love this site forever!
March 20th, 2006 at 8:29 pm
Hey thanks for the updates, but I prefer to not have a navigate away prompt? Can you offer an option to turn that off when you log into Meebo? Thanks for the updates and Meebo overall!
March 20th, 2006 at 10:18 pm
This is really becoming a polished product! Kudos!
March 20th, 2006 at 11:21 pm

Hi
I love the sound update, the sound is lovely, not too annoying (like ICQ).
I noticed that some people whanted a blinking taskbar when messages are incoming. This is one of the reasons that I’m using meebo. The blinking taskbars of MSN and ICQ disturbs me too much at work.
If you implement thing that blink more or more noise please make sure that the user can turn them of of use a alternative style.
Thanks for a great experience =)
March 21st, 2006 at 1:49 am
i have sound disabled on the computer im using, i would use this webmessenger except when someone messages me i have no idea.if the window popd up or blinked i wouyld be eternally gratefull:)

March 21st, 2006 at 6:50 am
Great upgrades.
Can u see if the following can be included:
1. At times I’m receiving buzzes. But I cannot buzz back.
Can u add a “Buzz” button to the interface.
2. If chat rooms can be accessed from Meebo.
But really guys. It’s not that we are complaining. U see, the above can make a gr8 site gr8er still.

March 21st, 2006 at 8:44 am
Alot of times the pics to the left of peoples sn’s do not load properly. Its not really a big deal but it is kind of annoying. It happens mostly if you click to talk to that person and not so much for people who you do not talk to. Thanks for such a great site.

Just wanted to add my voice to those saying, “Well done” – the service you guys are providing and constantly enhancing is second to none and I applaud your efforts. Thanks very much
March 21st, 2006 at 1:44 pm
Afternoon all!
Cheers for a great service – here’s a few for you to add to your wall of post-it’s:
1. A drop-down selector for sorting the buddy list in different ways, group by protocol, by status etc etc – this can be done client side, but it would be nice to have the preference saved into your account.
2. A checkbox in the sign-on account box (accessed from the bottom of the buddy list), for “Add this account to ‘My Meebo’ account” – it took me three attempts of adding accounts that way to realise that they didn’t stick unless added via the “My Meebo” menu! Alternatively you could make this the default and have a checkbox for “Do not add this account to ‘My Meebo’” – this would almost be preferable, as it’s more intuitive.
3. I just noticed that there is no obvious way to change your nickname for any accounts – It would be nice if the accounts list on the left had your current nickname next to it, and clicking on the nickname transformed it into a pre-populated textbox for editing – Clicking outside the textbox would obviously save this. This should also be saved into your “My Meebo” account.
4. Buddy aliases. Please PLEASE allow me to set an alias for any buddy! (Emo nicknames are the bane of my life…)
5. It would be awesome if you wrote a contact-management API, with support for groups etc. This would enable synchronisation of full clients with meebo, shifting contacts between groups and the like. (This obviously requires customisable buddy groups in the first place)
6. Contact grouping (Again dependent on buddy groups, as they’re subgroups) – essentially allow you to create a group for a user and place all their accounts from the different services into this group. The order that they are in the group defines the order in which the accounts are shown once the group is collapsed to show a single account. See Gaim for this concept.
Bit of a tall order all that really, but something to think about anyway!
March 21st, 2006 at 1:57 pm
Hi!
how can i change my nick?
kisses
March 21st, 2006 at 2:08 pm
How about an irc support?
March 21st, 2006 at 2:31 pm
Postit notes all over a wall? How about a bugzilla site to keep track of these requests?
March 21st, 2006 at 2:34 pm
Okay meebo is a life saver!! My boyfriend is out of country right now and talking on the phone can be expensive, my parents wont allow me to download messenger because dad thinks it tends to mess up the computer. Its really nice to be able to access this from anywhere (except school-its filtered) and is easy and fun to use. Im on everyday and this just keeps getting better with the stuff you guys add. Thank you so much!
a good thing to look into is a time recieved thing. I know you guys have it for when you log on but if someone leaves an message when your offline.. it gives you the time that you logged on and not the original sent time. ya know what i mean? well ya.. keep up the good work ya’ll !
March 21st, 2006 at 4:03 pm
Meebo seems to be getting slower and slower, both in loading the pages and in doing operations like moving a window around. Is this because of increased usage or increasing complexity of the page (or both)? If it’s the latter, could you make a visually minimal version so things will work faster?
March 21st, 2006 at 4:05 pm
id just like to say this is an amazing site ..but would be so much better if we could somehow use colors in our away messages. or make a profile.
but its really coming a long.
thanks,
ashley

I esp. love the confirmation message that pops when we have to navigate away from the page.
Great work !!

Hey guys,
Anything else is just great in this meebo!
as an everyday meebo user, I’m so glad all these updates are done so often, to make it better and better, but I just have 2 small remarks: since the sound came, my browser’s (firefox) title bar does not blink anymore to indicate incomming messages while in the middle of a conversation (it does still when someone BEGINS a conversation), and second, I believe that the sound when I type something is not really useful, since I know I typed, I don’t need to be reminded of that

Hi
March 31st, 2006 at 11:59 am
Hi, I wish if meebo would have this feature ‘Sending and Receving Files’ between users. As this feature would be very useful for us, to transfer our projects, and small files.
I know that it will take too much load on your server, if you enable file transfer services, but then you can apply an idea of p2p softwares, which connects user from user, and there is no third person(server) involved between.
