Good news!
Facebook Chat is back.
In my last blog post, I told you we were removing Facebook for a little while in order to incorporate a new way of connecting to their network.
After some hard work from the folks here at Meebo and help from a whole host of people at Facebook, we now have Facebook back in Meebo.
Plus, Meebo is now the first launch partner of the “alpha” version of the Facebook Connect + Chat integration. That’s pretty cool.
The method for connecting is slightly different than the other networks on Meebo, but it works basically the same way. You can login to Facebook from the front page or, if you have a Meebo account, login with your Meebo username and add Facebook as a network account from inside Meebo.
Thanks for your patience while we were getting Facebook up and running again.
We hope this helps you keep in touch with all your Facebook friends!
Seth

When will those of us who login with a Meebo ID be able to add it to our list of accounts?
Logging in individually via the homepage is annoying.
February 5th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Sweet! It’s a bit confusing at first, but workin great so far!
Nice job!
February 5th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
@Jamie: I use a MeeboId, and I just added it no problem.. I had to logout & back into Meebo before it was an option, however.

Awesome– glad to see you guys moving forward

Great work team meebo! It would even appear that meebo connects better to facebook chat than facebook, the friends online status change quicker. I love how easy it is and flawless to connect using your facebook account. The auto login of my facebook account because I was already logged into facebook is awesome.

Dear Meebo, could you try working next not on Skype funtionality but maybe better Meebo-Linux relations? because frankly on my Windows based computer meebo and my connection are best buddies! but on my Linux(Crunch_Bang to be exact) based computer (and yes i am sure there is no difference that might impead the connection it is under the same circumstances as the Windows PC) and meebo WILL-NOT-LOAD-ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!-AT-ALL!!!!!!!!!!! its very frustrating
February 5th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
hey meebo team, its great that you guys put facebook back up
but i was wondering if you guys could get back to working on
the chat history so we could delete our selected messages instead
of deleting our whole chat history.
thnx a bunch

February 5th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
Meebo is already fantastic. I have been using meebo for almost one year. So lots of chat history. Could you please work on how to delete selected chat history so we could delete our selected messages instead of deleting our whole chat history?
Could you try working next not on Skype? Therefore, I can let alone skype software. lol. Hope you can make it soon. Thanks a looooooooooot.

February 5th, 2009 at 5:40 pm

February 5th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
@Jamie Martin – just log in, click add account, select Facebook in the drop down menu, and follow the Facebook Connect steps.
It works like a charm!

Great work on this, and I certainly appreciate the time it’s taken to re-code it in a facebook-approved way.
However, all my Facebook contacts are stuck under one group: “Facebook”… could we have the ability to move them between our regular Meebo groups?
February 5th, 2009 at 8:39 pm
cool
February 5th, 2009 at 9:06 pm
I’ve been eagerly anticipating facebook chat coming back!!! Thanks for all the hard work!
February 5th, 2009 at 9:43 pm
Yay!
I am so glad that y’all could connect with Facebook, because it’s so much more useful.
But what will happen if facebook is having difficulties with their chat?
Will it affect Meebo at all? :/

I logged out of facebook and now I can’t get back into the chat with Meebo.
Also, is there a way you can make it so that if you are having a conversation in Meebo it doesn’t pop up on your facebook page or at least pops up minimized?
February 6th, 2009 at 1:29 am
It work earlier but its having problems now.
Please check it.
Thanks

February 6th, 2009 at 2:36 am
Hello, couldn’t initiate the process on firefox 3.0.5. I had to use Internet Explorer then come back to Firefox to use it.
It was stuck to the authorization step, telling me “you have to be logged in to do that”…
Thanks for the functionnality though, appart from that it’s great!
Keep up the good work in 2009. Please improve video and file transfer, doesn’t work all the time…

I’m guessing that if I don’t have access to facebook, due to firewall/proxy restriction, I cannot access facebook chat either.
Bummer.
That’s what I wanted facebook within meebo in the first place.
February 6th, 2009 at 3:31 am
thank you sir for facebook
we were waiting for last month for facebook
February 6th, 2009 at 4:30 am
Hi – I was just wondering – i use Firefox and have meebo in the sidebar. But why do i have to also have at tab open ? Isn´t there a funktion where only the side bare is on ?
Sincerely
Julie
February 6th, 2009 at 4:41 am
this is awome now ya have facebook back i love to be in this great website thxs alot
February 6th, 2009 at 5:01 am
Hi, tried getting on to FB but keep saying my username/password is incorrect. If i log out of Meebo and log back and try and add facebook, it is no longer in the drop down box…
Any ideas??
February 6th, 2009 at 5:07 am
Who cares about getting on from facebook? The real issue with meebo right now is that you cannot block other meebo users. And NO ONE at meebo seems to acknowledge this problem. I don’t even like using it anymore because I can’t block people who harass me.
February 6th, 2009 at 5:11 am
I wanted to ask how does this chat protocol works in Meebo ?
Does it run through the libpurple back-end, like the other protocols ?
Or does the facebook chat directly rely on facebook’s javascript API and Meebo access it directly from the AJAX client running in the browser ?
If runs on the libpurple backend, do you plan to publish your plugin so that other purple-based applications (Pidgin, Adium, …) can take advantage of it ?
Thank you very much for you work on this wonderful chat tool.
February 6th, 2009 at 5:20 am
It doesn’t work now (“username/password are wrong or you are already connected”) but it works perfectly yesterday…
February 6th, 2009 at 5:40 am
So glad that FB is back, much easier to deal with IM’s through Meebo. I know FB-connect is in alpha stage and all. Is the lowerbar notification ‘xxxx is typing’ not showing up, on a list of things to address already?
February 6th, 2009 at 5:55 am
I was able to add Facebook to meebo but how can i add the meebo widget to facebook. I try to add the meebo application but it doesn’t work. Any suggestions?
thanks.
February 6th, 2009 at 6:33 am
I know what Facebook Connect is but what is the Alpha version of it? Is this Connect on steroids? haha

Thank you a lot for your efforts to make meebo more and more useful !
February 6th, 2009 at 7:27 am
Thanx for all the hard work..glad it is back!!
February 6th, 2009 at 7:39 am
It works but you have to log into just facebook from the main page. Go to accounts and click on the link in the bottom right that says Already a user and just sign into meebo from there. At that point I’m able to access all IMs and facebook simultaneously.
February 6th, 2009 at 8:03 am
thanks fala. but that really shouldn’t work that way. :-\
February 6th, 2009 at 8:34 am
actually nope, that did let me sign in, but it will not maintain connection.
February 6th, 2009 at 8:39 am
This is awesome. You guys rock. Meebo just kills the other IM programs.
Is there anyway you all would work with yuuguu or yugma/do screensharing?
February 6th, 2009 at 8:49 am
GREAT job meebo team!!! next project – meebo app for Blackberry?????
February 6th, 2009 at 8:50 am
Thanks! However, I can’t get it to consistently work. I get this a lot:
Meebo could not create a connection with these IM services.
These names and passwords may be incorrect or you may have signed into the services from somewhere else.
(MY_NAME_HERE)
Eventually, after a few more attempts, I got on, but I still got this pop-up:
“You connected as a different user!”
Also, what is off-line access and why would Meebo need this?
Thanks again.
Esteban
February 6th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Another thing, why does being invisible make the icon the same gray color as when you are signed off? Isn’t the (invisible) status enough? When it’s gray, I sometimes try to reconnect because it looks disconnected…

this is a really good development. Also my congratulations for a fine job in keeping poeple in touch with the world and each other. keep up the good works.

February 6th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Sadly, fbook chat was working for me earlier this morning (EST) ; however, seems to be broken on my end…
February 6th, 2009 at 9:22 am
okay I am on skype you can make a serach name on esperando.fleurine so we can chat oka
February 6th, 2009 at 9:25 am
I need a friand to cheat with
February 6th, 2009 at 9:38 am
To elaborate on my comment (it’s now working, but the workaround was to login/logout): Using Google Chrome v. 0; I enabled offline access in Facebook. Enabling fbook chat from my meebo account logged me in to facebook; however, an hour after chatting with someone through facebook I got the error message that meebo couldn’t connect due to incorrect user/pass.
I logged out of facebook, tried logging in to fbook chat through meebo, got the same error message about incorrect user/pass. Logged out of meebo, signed back in to my meebo account, and manually selected to log in to facebook; then I was presented with the original “type in your user/pass” for facebook (with blank fields) and it now appears to be working again.
February 6th, 2009 at 9:43 am
This is not much use to me…because I use meebo behind a firewall (at work) and facebook is blocked
February 6th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I actually meant proxy…not firewall.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Yeah… hours later and I can’t maintain a connection. All well. I guess it was the thought that counts.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:29 am
What is a friend? She looks out for you, inspires you, laughs with you, cries with you, understands you, guides you and walks with you. I would like to know the defference btwen a friend and girlfriend me; I need a girlfriend
February 6th, 2009 at 10:32 am
Facebook is down again. What’s up guys?
February 6th, 2009 at 10:39 am
I cannot seem to set up Facebook within Meebo. It requests a username and password, but gives me no place to add them. And, when I click Connect to Facebook, nothing happens at all. I’ve tried several times, but cannot get connected to my facebook account.
February 6th, 2009 at 10:48 am
I removed the account. Cleared cache. Started over. “Connect connect to facebook” link doesn’t work now…

great facebook is back..meebo trully is my favo..well done
February 6th, 2009 at 11:33 am
I was able to login once, and chat for a few minutes. Now it says it cannot connect. Removing the account, rebooting, etc. Nothing works.
Booo
February 6th, 2009 at 11:59 am
ok two things, 1. why the hell did meebo take away the ability to block people- this is completely ludicrous and 2. why the hell did meebo take away the ability to sign on as invisible. you guys need to seriously rethink your approach and bring back these features or else youre going to lose a lot of business.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I use AIM/MSN/ICQ/Facebook(when it works) and you can log on invisible with all of them. Check your account settings.
February 6th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Hey glad to hear Facebook is back but we can’t connect to it!!! it just says, “connecting” the whole day…. and im still trying to connect as i’m writing this to you….
it was easier the other way, there were no issues.
PS i say “we” becasue it’s afew others here at the office that can’t get on either… same issues

February 6th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
hmmmmmmm how do i access facebook via meebo?
February 6th, 2009 at 1:32 pm
i think that this is awsome but what i dont like is that it does not matter if tyou have a profile go around please an ask everybody it ask my friends so ….. please do that because i have a new thing to trade thaat if you change your idea it…..is a private chat room for just with your friends
February 6th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
well the process was thoroughly confusing, but then that seems to be what facebook does is confuse me more and more. Worse it worked for minutes on end and then ceased to function. After a complete logout of both meebo and faceplant signing back into meebo allowed me to sign back into facebook.
Does this mean I’ll have to log in twice everytime I log into Meebo? i meebo more than facebook.
~kd
February 6th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Why does it lose connection every hour or so? Logging in from the main page is confusing as well.
February 6th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
You need to put the invisible button back on meebo.
I like to go invisible to see whose online avoiding certain conversations.
It would be very nice of you.
Thank you for all your hard work at meebo.
:]Kudos.

February 6th, 2009 at 5:11 pm
Facebook worked awesome for a while, but it stopped working last night… if you guys could get it back up that would be great! I like using meebo more then the actual facebook chat.
February 6th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
I don’t usually comment, but this is just extremely cool of both meebo and facebook! I loved it when the login first came out, and am glad it’s back. Great job!

During the setup phase it offers a []checkbox that doesn’t sound good. Something about allowing meebo to access the facebook account, even when not logged into meebo?
Or am I misunderstanding that?
Anyway, the facebook-meebo login doesn’t seem to work. Do I reallly HAVE to check that []scary-checkbox?
February 7th, 2009 at 7:06 am
I’ve been using meebo for about 2 years, and I absolutely love it! However, I’m a little disappointed with the new Facebook Chat option. I connect through a proxy that does not allow me to access facebook, and therefore I’m not able to connect to facebook chat via meebo. Anyway you guys will be able to fix this?
Also, I downloaded the facebook notifier, but it has not worked consistently for me. I’m wondering if the proxy could be interfering with that also?
Thanks for your great work!
February 7th, 2009 at 8:36 am
worked for me initially for hours after your blog post, but afterwards it stopped working and hasn’t been able to connect since. it was nice while it lasted though, much better than using fb chat on fb.

It just sits there saying connecting. It use to work with the older version… any ideas?
February 8th, 2009 at 8:20 pm
the facebook chat is great, i only have on question.
When i’m not on facebook.com, sometimes the meebo chat doesn’t work.
I went through the walkthrough, and that doesn’t really help me unfortunately.
I don’t know what to do exactly.
It works for a while, then just stops working.
any ideas? it would be greatly appreciated

The first time you released Facebook chat it worked INSTANTLY… now it doesn’t work at all… just sits there saying “connecting…” all day.
I’m assuming this is because I am firewalled from Facebook and the facebook connect requires me to connect directly. THIS COMPLETELY ANNULS THE POINT OF MEEBO.
Stick to your core principles. Give us a true remote login.

as it is myconcern ive noticed that you post a blog everyday on everyone’s account, why is that?

Hey, you really need to fix the picture on meebo, on google chrome. Basically, when ever I choose my picture it doesnt upload, and dont worry I use a meebo account im not that stupid lol
SO basicly can you fix it please? Because I love meebo and I love google chrome
It should take 2 seconds to fix?

From Cameron’s post above:
“I’m assuming this is because I am firewalled from Facebook and the facebook connect requires me to connect directly. THIS COMPLETELY ANNULS THE POINT OF MEEBO.”
I can’t argue with that. Is it not possible to authenticate on the server side with the Facebook Connect architecture?

John

Are you planning to add support for OTR? It would be really nice. I have it with Pidgin, and would like to have it here as well.

Meebo won’t connect to Facebook. It just sits there saying it’s connecting, but never completes.
Is it still working for everyone, because I can’t get it to work…

Hello, I have my meebo account so I can sing on to many of the providers you have, but when I want to add facebook as a provider i don´t find the option… It´s only at the start page, from where I can login inside facebook without any problem, but seems I cannot associate it with my meebo account to have all the providers in one same spot.
