We’ve got exciting news! Many of you probably already know that there are a bunch of aspects to Meebo that aren’t readily noticeable from meebo.com. First among them is probably the Meebo Bar. We started work on the Meebo Bar back in early 2008. The goal was to bring the capabilities that all of you enjoy at Meebo.com to other people’s web sites as well. Folks who run their own web sites have literally been asking for “Meebo in their web sites” since Meebo first launched, and the Meebo Bar is the third product we’ve launched to satisfy that particular request.
Today’s a very big day for us… we’re releasing the Meebo Bar for content sites, and our first launch partner is TechCrunch! How cool is that?!?
For those of you not familiar with TechCrunch, it’s one of the main startup industry blogs. They cover new startups that have just launched plus news about more established companies.
So what’s different about this version of the Meebo Bar versus the version that’s been around since January? Previously, a web site could only display the Meebo Bar to registered users who were logged into the partner site. Now, the Meebo Bar can display to all users, logged in or not.
The Bar has also picked up a bunch of new functionality. Like before, it lets you chat live with your friends on the site you’re visiting, from FanPop to Justin.TV. It also lets you bring in your friends from other places who you may want to chat with, like from Facebook or AIM.
New, though, are some pretty nifty features. My favorite is drag and drop sharing (yes, you can head over to TechCrunch to try it out, right now). How does this work? When the Meebo Bar is integrated into a partner’s site, it automatically recognizes content on the site, like photos and videos, and makes them drag and drop shareable to your friends anywhere. You can post a picture to all your friends on Facebook, Twitter, or Email, or you can IM a video to any friend, in real-time, on your buddy list. Our goal is to make it unbelievably easy to share interesting content around the web with your friends wherever they may be.
Even more exciting for all of us is that a bunch of fantastic partners will be launching within the next day or so as well. They range from gaming sites to wedding sites, hip hop blogs to a pets site. They are:
AujourdHui, AllHipHop.com, BabyNames, BasilMarket, Batanga, CafeMom, CrispyGamer, DailyStrength, Decayenne, Dhingana, Dogster, eBaum’s World, Fanpop, Flixster, GirlsAskGuys, ibeatYou, iHispano, ImageChef, IndianElement, JacketFlap, JamLegend, Justin.tv, MixPod, OperationSports, OrangeShark, OutSpark, Paste Magazine, Played Online, Project PlayList, QuePasa, SOHH.com, and WeddingWire.
Now, a final disclosure. In a way, this feels a lot like the original launch of Meebo.com. It was the first version of an early product. We got some of the features really right, some of them wrong, and missed a bunch of others. More important than anything: all of you helped us with what features you wanted to see to make the product work better for you. We all look forward to everyone’s feedback – just like before, we’ll work very fast to incorporate it into the product. Thanks!
Seth

Its wonderful that Meebo is getting more recognition!!! I think next they need to find a partner (maybe even do this by themselves) to make an application for the iphone. It would be amazing to have it! I just searched for it and couldnt find it.

Hey,
Great job guys. Couple comments. I noticed in normal Meebo, when you want to add a new account and you select a network, it shows u the huge list of all your new partners (this may be intended behavior, but its a little distracting from the core networks). Also I understand why this is difficult but its a little annoying that when I went to TechCrunch and signed it (it was great that it recognized who I am) I got signed out of all the networks in regular Meebo except for AIM. But ye otherwise great job,
Leo.

good morning seth – i don’t quite understand it all YET. Thanks for the info!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:46 am
It’s nice to see this feature launched! I earned myself a Meebo t-shirt taking a look at this a while back.
I am very excited to see some of the functionality I felt was missing included on the official launch. I love the integration between my existing Meebo session and my new TechCrunch session.
Go Meebo!
August 26th, 2009 at 6:55 am
I think this has already been mentioned, but I noticed that if I’m already using meebo (and logged in) in another tab, when I log in to the meebo bar on TechCrunch, it signs me out of several of the services in my original meebo tab. It would be much better if it was aware of my current session and just hijacked it rather than creating a new one.
This is a small problem, though. Generally, it’s a really good idea to embed yourself in other people’s web sites ala UserVoice and Facebook Connect. Kudos!
August 26th, 2009 at 7:02 am
hey chris / abbakar – thanks for bringing that bug to our attention. we’re aware of it – it’s a surprising amount of work to get fixed believe it or not, but it’s definitely on the roadmap. until it’s fully fixed, when moving between techcrunch and meebo you’ll need to hit the reconnect buttons. sorry about that! seth

August 26th, 2009 at 11:45 am
I like it except what it does to my existing Meebo login. Please fix. When are we going to be able to drag and drop stuff from other sites into standard meebo chat?
August 26th, 2009 at 12:02 pm
I want to say that i was on line today
August 26th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
i’ve voiced an idea a while back, and just now realized something. most of my messengers have the name of the person just logging in that appears in the lower right-hand corner. i’m a frequent meebo user, but i also have other browser tabs open, so i don’t always see people signing in. is there any possibility of this feature appearing sometime soon?
August 26th, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Hey Seth,
Just listened to the TWiST podcast you guested on – loved it. Great info, great insights, highly entertaining. Anyway, I’d never actually checked out Meebo until I heard the podcast and am now having all kinds of fun exploring.
Keep up the good work!

I really like the look of the Meebo bar, especially drag and drop sharing. One thing tho – do you think you could use a URL shortener (esp when sharing via Twitter), rather than your rather long go.meebo etc?
Anyways, great product.
August 27th, 2009 at 1:49 am
looks nice
BUT
it only makes sense for me, if this bar is integrated in the web browser, so you could leave the curent page and go to another and share stuff of this page. (it mustn’t be addited by one page, so, if you leave this page, you shouldnt be logged out)
also it should be compatible with the meebo notifier and, as best with the real meebo.com.
hope, that you read this and share my mind, cause I really like meebo and the bar is a good & innovative Idea, but only really usabe, if it would be enlarged to the whole internet!
greetings, jacob

This new feature is interesting. I like meebo on the whole. New updates keeps you hooked to meebo.
August 27th, 2009 at 4:41 am
It’s definitely interesting, but does it show me my friends that are actually reading techcrunch at that moment? also what about connecting to the community of users that i don’t have personal connection with that are reading techcrunch this morning? if i’m reading an article on TC i might be more interested in talking with people who are digesting the same stuff than my normal chat contacts. That said, the sharing features of this are sick.

August 27th, 2009 at 11:54 am
wat up did u creat meebo?
August 27th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
IT would be sick to have this implemented into firefox all the time as a add on or something…or allow me to place this on my personal page and browse other sites at the same time…
August 27th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
It’s not connecting anymore! Possible server problems? Anyone else experiencing the same problem?
August 27th, 2009 at 8:53 pm
You guys should make it so that it doesn’t sign me off everyone on my meebo window when I sign in on TechCrunch. Another suggestion is that you have sent messages update across all open meebo windows (Kind of like the native facebook chat on the facebook website).
Otherwise, nice update. Looking forward to more features!

Been using Meebo for quite a while. Something in the past that I always wanted to ask about. Was there ever any explanation given for the switch from right to left of the logon screen? Not that it makes any difference NOW… just always wondered why it was done, never asked before. I am sure some explanation must have been given but I didn’t catch it.
