When we initially launched meebo, we crossed our fingers, gave our two little servers some encouraging pats, and sent out those first emails to friends and family. Words of encouragement started trickling in from students, office workers, soldiers, and travelers. One of our most loyal user groups was completely unexpected… librarians.
Turns out that locked-down computers, reference librarians who always want to be in touch with their patrons, and the desire to make libraries fun and friendly have given meebo and meebo me the perfect opportunity to shine.
Just recently, we smiled when reading Jessamyn’s blog where she helped a librarian post these posters advocating the use of meebo instead of download clients. Also, Aaron has been traipsing around libraries promoting meebo me as well. He explains, meebo me doesn’t require a download and the widget can be placed directly on the library’s website.
Thanks for keeping meebo in mind when you’re visiting your local library and public computer clusters. We’re happy to help out!
Take Care,
- Elaine

My question is… What will happen when meebo is discovered and also blocked, like they have done with the other instant messaging systems? I use meebo faithfully at work, because every other way of messaging has been blocked. Could this ocurr to meebo too? I really would be upset with that! I love meebo and reccommend it to everyone.

I love the meebome widget. I have added it to our library’s website and have only received positive feedback from library users so far. We are a virtual library, so the widget allows users to quickly ask for items, reference questions, website directional questions, or for renewals. The only thing that would make my life easier is if I could run meebo through a program and not have to leave the website up my whole work day.

IANAL (I am not a librarian), but I discovered Meebo at the Apple shop in Regent\’s Street, London, and now I use it all the time. One fewer client on my system and just another tab in Firefox. Wonder if some functionality could be in a Firefox addon? Anyway, keep up the good work!

December 12th, 2006 at 6:51 am
I also use Meebo at work because all instant messenging programs have been blocked!
For everyone in a similar situation you are our only option. Browser-based instant messaging, brilliant!
Thank you, Meebo!

My employer blocked all chat programs at the server, so a web-based chat program was necessary. Thanks, meebo!

Our school has started limiting access to only web based ports. As such, we can no longer use aim or similar clients. THANK YOU MEEBO!

Hi
December 12th, 2006 at 7:06 am
…i started using meebo because i work in a library & the computers here dont allow downloads. meebo is perfect for librarians, etc., because nothing special is required to use it. THANKS!!!
December 12th, 2006 at 7:11 am
My wonderful sister, a librarian, was the one that showed meebo to me. She’s got the widget on her work website, so she can be available to those that need to ask her questions. Now I’ve added it to my own websites so people can find me – when they need me. It’s wonderful! Thanks for your terrific product.
December 12th, 2006 at 7:19 am
I use Meebo everyday from the library to keep in touch with my friends and family since i dont have a PC at home anymore. I”m so glad i found your site! I was so tired of useing Yahoo’s bata version, it was terrible. Thanks again for your services!

i love meebo for the reason that i can use it on any computer! i work as a substitute teacher and at lunch, i sign on and can keep in touch with my friends… and it’s not a blocked website!
i also love it because i have meebo on my blog.. my friends who work and are blocked from im programs, can go to my blog, not a blocked site, and talk to me!
December 12th, 2006 at 8:15 am
At the Twinsburg Library, we’re using Meebo to host our Chat With a Librarian service. It’s great! The widget is wonderful, and I enjoy being able to use all my chat programs at once. And I heard about it first from Aaron… (I’m the World of Warcraft girl who was at the Shaker Library. I got a new job.)
December 12th, 2006 at 8:18 am
Hello! I just wanted to tell a little story here. My friend is stationed in the air force in Japan and I introduced meebo to him one day and he loved it. When he is working in the office, he is banned from all chat downloads. Meebo was not a blocked website, though, so he was thrilled to be able to keep in touch with us in the US (becuase when he got home for the day, we were all asleep!) Unfortunately, though, a few days later he was called into the head boss’s office (I don’t know what they’re called in the service) and he was told he had been going to “inappropriate websites” and would be disciplined if he continued. Darn! Meebo wasnt able to make it through the governments inspection, but it still works great for me when I’m stuck in the computer lab between classes! (I was too afraid to test it when I worked for the Department of Justice- those people mean business!) Thanks for all your hard work!
December 12th, 2006 at 8:18 am
I actually learned of Meebo when I was in library school and now use it at work in a library as well. It’s a great tool
December 12th, 2006 at 9:17 am
hi out there
December 12th, 2006 at 9:24 am
Meebo is great and the widget is brilliant, but we need just one more thing–archiving. Libraries must keep stats on their services and many academic librarians do research on them. Archiving would support both purposes. Thanks for adding the sound alert. You’ve been listening to us!
December 12th, 2006 at 9:36 am
I learned of Meebo from the Librarian in Black. Thanks to her and to y’all!
December 12th, 2006 at 9:40 am
I use meebo me on my class blog and it rocks. Keeps me in touch with my students and it is so simple to use…thanks for bringing easy/cool tools to librarians and their users.
December 12th, 2006 at 9:43 am
We librarians are glad to help anytime. I think secretly we’re all technology geeks! We are always glad to help our users get more access and Meebo does just that with minimal muss and fuss. By and large, librarians are always receptive to new technologies and glad to partner with anyone to make things happen for our users.
December 12th, 2006 at 9:45 am
Hi, I\’m a librarian who also uses Meebome widget and loves it. However, I wish their was a way to archive the widget conversations and other meebo conversations into a central archive. Archiving conversations is very important to libraries for statistical records, training, and research.
December 12th, 2006 at 9:58 am
I’m a librarian who uses Meebo to keep in touch with both patrons and friends/colleagues and loves it! Haven’t put the meebome widget on our library website, but we will soon. Thank you for this wonderful tool!
December 12th, 2006 at 9:59 am
We just finished a project with 21 public libraries in the netherlands. The librarians just loved the simplicity of Meebo Me! Thank you! Three things for the Meebo Team to work on: 1) better alert- system when a new call comes in (louder, different sounds), 2) Archiving and export to CSV files for usage in statistics (previous posters also mention this) and 3) sending clickable URL’s to the patron.
Keep up the good work…

Hello My friend
Alfonso
December 12th, 2006 at 10:47 am
Love that widget! It was one fo the first things I added to our library’s internal blog. Yay meebo!
December 12th, 2006 at 11:10 am
Another librarian pushing the widget, here – they\\\’re springing up all over my university\\\’s subject librarian pages and blogs, and eventually may appear on our main Ask a Librarian site. I second the calls of other posters for a louder notification sound and archiving ability for conversations, and I\\\’ll add two more suggestions: 1) page pushing or new tab/window linking ability through the widget (to prevent users from copying/pasting web addresses and inadvertently navigating away) and 2) a longer holding time for offline messages. That said, meebo me widgets are great reference tools. Thanks for recognizing us librarians!
December 12th, 2006 at 11:22 am
hey meebo,
thanks very much for ur service. actually u are true. it is because of meebo tthat i am able to talk to my friends back in india online while i am studying in UK. my library where i have access to internet has blocked the messenger server. thank you very much. you hve been a real help to me. once again a very very very heart felt thank you to you guys. May God bless you.
December 12th, 2006 at 11:27 am
We use meebo at our library for IM reference. Our tech people love it because its web-based and no download’s required. Our patrons like it because its simple to use. Great work, thanks!!!
December 12th, 2006 at 11:35 am
I’m a librarian and I love Meebo! I’m a convert from Trillian, and I’ve been using IM to keep in touch with colleagues and patrons. A few of my colleagues and I are toying with the idea of embedding Meebome widgets into our outreach web pages…I’ve already got them on my personal blog and wiki. Thanks for providing a wonderful service that helps librarians maintain an air of humanism in an increasingly electronic, impersonal library/research environment!
December 12th, 2006 at 12:05 pm
I thought this said “Liberian love”, and wondered how many Liberians were actually using Meebo. But I use this while in the computer lab at school or in the library, since I cannot download any IMing client.
I even use it at home sometimes!
December 12th, 2006 at 12:43 pm
LOVE Meebo! I just use it for personal gain now, but I\’m working on introducing IM to our library\’s reference services, and I\’m teaching Meebo as part of a staff training class in January. I hate to contribute to the broken record, but if there was some way to record conversations….we live and breathe statistics, alas. Thank you so much for offering this product!
December 12th, 2006 at 1:05 pm
I love love love love Meebo! We use it as part of our reference services and it ROCKS! Thanks!
December 12th, 2006 at 1:10 pm

Would be great to sing in meebo and check the latest on my own language.
By suggesting that i’m also suggesting myself as a volunteer translator.
Great work you guy.
Keep it up.

I’m a librarian, and I love Meebo (and MeeboMe). We’re even thinking about switching from our yucky expensive product to MeeboMe at my place of work!
In case you haven’t seen it yet, here is a list of libraries using MeeboMe for reference services.

I’m a librarian too and I use Meebo for the personal convenience! I’d love for our academic library to use it so we could help out students in a quick chat without going through one of those burdensome, buggy programs written specially for virtual reference. Here’s a sad note though… our local public library system (I don’t work there) has their computers locked so tight that even Meebo won’t work! How’d they manage that??
December 12th, 2006 at 3:44 pm
the library i work at has over 50 pc’s for people to use. most of the people just want to msg others, therefore i tell them to come to meebo. it is a great tool and no downloading or config is needed
December 12th, 2006 at 4:38 pm
Meebo is great. My library is currently looking into using it to answer students’ research questions via the library’s website. Although I absolutely agree that stats and archiving would be great enhancements, I think the bigger issue is the having our users inadvertently navigate away from the IM session (by pasting a link or choosing a tab from our website template) and losing contact with the librarian. For those of you who are currently using Meebo in a library setting, how do you get around this issue?
Thanks Meebo and thanks to anyone who can explain how not to lose users when using the widget.
- Joe

Just wanted to let you know that meebo became extremely helpful to me today because our library (University of Massachusetts Amherst) uses it so we can get in contact with them easier. I thought it was funny that the one day I use it, there’s a blog post about it!

December 12th, 2006 at 8:46 pm
Meebo reaches its omnipresent and most of us (users all over the globe) expect a little peace of mind everywhere we want to go and use meebo. May I request that you device an application embedded to meebo\’s site a anti-keylogger? Like the one being used in e-gold.com (SRK application) or anything better than this would help. Ty!

I can’t believe it took this long for someone to write about meebo being used in libraries! I have been using it in our school’s library and labs for as long as I have been a user, for the same locked-down reason. It is a wonderful thing your team has done. Now that I think about it, I don’t even have any of the clients on my computer anymore. Strictly meebo!

really nice and simple interface and makes chatting during a boring communication class possible
MANY FRANKSS!
December 13th, 2006 at 9:11 am
It’s also great on college campuses where public and office computers are blocked from downloading anything. I used to use AIMExpress because of this, but then it got VERY flaky and would often sign me off after an idle time of about three minutes. Then my fiance found out about meebo trough CPU magazine and I use it every day I don’t have my own laptop here. Meebo’s also great for the variety of IM services you can log into with it. Mori called it ” basically an online Trillian.” Kudos and much much love for doing this!!

From a fellow reference librarian for Twinsburg Public Library.
Our library has enjoyed the service very much. We are trying to get the word spread of our online reference service, since we haven’t had much of a response. Yet, the service is wonderful and a great tool for our patrons.
Thanks again,

since u mention about the launch, here is something I have awayys wondered about Meebo…did u guys actually depend on just word of mouth for this huge popularity?…I mean did it rreally get passed by just some mails to famly and friends? I know a lot of new products depend a lot on sending blog invites etc to popularize ther softwares…did that help u guys?…I am marketing person and hence the interest:-)…can u help me unravel the mystery?

It would be nice if the Meebome widget allowed users to logi into their own IM accounts on AOL IM insteadof requring them to use a Meebo account. It means I have to have a website open instead of using the AOL IM client that I already have open. I am a librarian and have been using IM for many years as a way to reach our users.

Well done, it’s great that you managed to capture such a great market – and even by mistake. It’s fantastic when your application is able to have such a great impact, even when it was unplanned or unexpected. Librarians are, indeed, in the need for this kind of application and Meebo has worked really well in delivering the goods. Well done.
