Sascha was the first to ask us about this week’s faux meebo Super Bowl ad. First off, we have to give credit where credit is due. If you were scratching your head after watching our video, you probably haven’t seen either of these: the original 1997 VW Golf video or the spoof 1998 Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer version. SannaSK got it right – this was definitely an homage effort — a parody of a parody (and a slightly sneaky way to get out our “we’re hiring” message).
Yah, I know… we didn’t expect anyone to really remember these. But the song is catchy, I happen to own a five-year-old VW Jetta, and we were willing to do anything that involved making a really large pirate emoticon (a big thanks to Jason over at goodplastics.com).
So don’t worry, we’re not quitting our day jobs
A few funny things… we had about three hours to make the film in total (Sandy’s landlord raised her rent so she needed the afternoon to go roof hunting). I got outbid twice on eBay before finally scoring that skeleton toy. We took the passenger shots by using masking tape and rubber bands to strap the camcorder to the passenger window and driving with the door open. Because the door was wide open, we did most of the filming over by Shoreline where we were pretty sure we wouldn’t get ticketed.
Speaking of getting ticketed, did you see the shot where we drive over the bridge? We really, really weren’t supposed to be there – turns out that’s a pedestrian bridge and the woman was surprised when we snuck up behind her. Emily over at DFJ gave us a few suggestions and one was an alternative ending that involved Sandy and me picking up Seth and then dropping him off on a curb once we realized he was stinky. However, Seth’s not really stinky and he was running around supplying the meebo crew with Quizno’s sandwiches.
Hope you enjoyed our quirky ad (don’t forget to check out the others too) and, for the football fans out there, we wish your team good luck this Sunday. For the big game, I’m heading down to Jersey’s to get some cheesesteaks and huddle around the big screen with the crowd.
Oh, and no emoticons were harmed in the production of this film ![]()
Take Care!
-Elaine

I recommend this short movie which mocks Kim Jong Il and his special agents for buying Hennessy XO abroad :=)
The full 30-minute movie can be watched and downloaded (in WMV or Flash format) at:

I completely loved it when I saw it. I couldn’t stop laughing the first time around. I was like “oh no, not again” at the beginning, but it grew on me.
Kudos to the work on it. Looks like some great improv filming skills (the passenger side views) paid off.
Later,
Daniel

Here I sit having said YUP to covering the IT department on the weekend for one of Am-z-n.com’s sites for 10.5 hours while attempting to do a shift flip to nights then back to days. Yawns…
That was pretty cool actually, it was nice way to start out the day (night) seeing 2 people actually driving around smiling… with a hint of comedy.
That reminds me of the time I put a life-sized pink panther seat-belted in my passenger seat and drove around… or parked in front of a McDonald’s DT window and placing him in the drivers seat with a placard on the dash reading “Adding some Color and Expression to life…”
While inside eating I enjoyed the heads turning, fingers pointing and the smiles flowing… as customers inside and out as well as passers by noticed and enjoyed.
Now as for those stars in the car I can only imagine what kind of laughter those two generate in the office. Great job on not cracking up totally in front of the cam, I know it’s hard to do especially when having fun and trying to keep a straight face.
Can I adopt you all as my remote IT team ??? lol
February 4th, 2007 at 5:13 pm
What? Stop lying! Of COURSE I have an alter ego.
February 4th, 2007 at 6:53 pm

Gawd dhamn…

I remember two VW commercials from awhile ago…”Da da da” by Trio and “Pink Moon” by Nick Drake were burned into my min dway back then. I think you guys did a good job for what you had to do it with and for the amount of time to do it in. Too bad I can’t leave my current job to help Meebo out. Maybe later when I come home.

say hi to my friends
February 5th, 2007 at 12:16 am
Awesome-ist commercials, hehe. I\’d love to be part of the Meebo team and all, but as of right now, a novice programmer wouldn\’t qualify for any of the positions. I love the challenge that you guys posted last week and can\’t wait for more. Well, keep up the good work!!
February 5th, 2007 at 1:12 am
I get it now. Homage.

That’s impressive – driving a proper car! Not only is it a VW, but it’s got proper gears! But surely you are too young to remember the Casio VL-Tone ? Can I make a ring-tone of your version for my web site?
