Update (5/17): classic.meebo.com has been updated to the previous release, feel free to use if you’re still having trouble logging in. Thanks for being patient with us!
“I’m in PopSugar!”
“I’m in Simpsons!“
“Oh wow, did you see how many people are in the The Almost room?”
What are we talking about? Refresh your browsers! Clear your caches… We’ve got meebo rooms!
Some of you may have noticed some new graphics sprinkling our front page, as well as the spiffy new bottom bar when you login. We are very happy and proud (and altogether very tired and excited) to present to you the result of months of hard work…
meebo rooms is a neat new product that allows you to connect to other meebo users, friends, and visitors to websites. Think of them as chatrooms, on steroids!
Unlike traditional chatrooms however, we’ve built in a feature that enables you to create a room, add it to you buddylist (to receive notifications even when you’re not in the room), and here’s the kicker… embed the same room on your personal profiles and websites, just like meebo me!
What else have we got in store you ask? Media! We listened to you carefully, brought you all in for user studies, and called many more of you on the phone. We know that lots of you love watching YouTube, MetaCafe, and browsing through Flickr. We’ve incorporated the ability to watch your favorite URLs with your friends, all at once! Got a great link that you found on Digg? Paste it in your room and voila, it’s now shared.
And as an added bonus, we’ve got some awesome partners lined up to help us fill our initial rooms with media. Drum roll please… We’ve got Blip.tv, Capitol Music Group’s Capitol Records and Virgin Records, CNET, CollegeHumor, Flixster, (let me take a breath…) GameTrailers.com, Jive Records, NBC Universal, Pop Sugar, (oooh, more!!!) Popular Mechanics, RockYou, Veoh, Us Weekly’s Us TV, and finally VIBE Magazine.
You might have also noticed, after browsing through the rooms, that we’ve added video advertisements and a sign-off ad. Just like any other meebo feature, we’re testing the waters and experimenting with the best ways to integrate revenue generating properties into the service, in a non-intrusive way of course =p. For those of you old-schoolers who still love IE5.5, please continue to use http://classic.meebo.com, unfortunately the new rooms feature doesn’t play well with older versions.
I’m psyched and pumped that we’ve finally pushed meebo rooms live. When my finger hit the “enter” key to release to the final server just a mere 5 minutes ago, the team went crazy. We’ve worked many many hours, eaten a lot of take-out, and watched hundreds of videos to bring this to all of you and we hope you try it out and let us know what you think. Be wary of bugs, we know rooms will be buggy and we appreciate your patience as we iron out all the kinks. It’s a great leap for the entire team and we’d love to get your feedback!
cheers,
sandy

Hi guys,
Looks good, sounds exciting but I can’t see any of my contact list anymore!
Where do I post bugs?
May 14th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
now thats innovation! keep it going guys, all the best.
May 14th, 2007 at 10:04 pm
u guys are great! one thing that i enjoy most was reading your post when i log in!
May 14th, 2007 at 10:22 pm
Hey Chickitty,
If you’re seeing a blank contact list, that’s probably just from the switchover to the new release. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies, restarting your browser, and then loading up meebo.com again. (Go to the top menu, and choose Tools then Options to delete your internet files/cache.) That should clear everything up. Send an email if you’re still running into trouble though!
If you’re still running into trouble, please send an email to comments@meebo.com — we’ll be monitoring all bugs and other comments there!

Thats Fantastic!
Fantástico! (in Brazillian Portuguese)
May 14th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Guys, this looks real neat! Congrats!
Does this also mean that we are close to getting audio/ video chat in meebo now? Would love to do away with the IMs completely if this happens.
May 14th, 2007 at 11:11 pm
too many bugs. cannot see my contact list, can only see one category – offline. the strings at the bottom bar say “undefined”. totally unusable for me, I cannot see online contact even after refreshing the cache and the cookies.
will send a mail to comments@meebo.com with the image.
May 14th, 2007 at 11:28 pm
little bit slow at beginning.. but great features….
c00olllll ^_^
May 14th, 2007 at 11:34 pm
That’s a great thing you did out there!
I admit that I haven’t tried it so far but I’ll revert with my first impression!
It’s a great thing you’re doing your best to make us charmed when using meebo!
Thanks guys and good luck in the future!
May 14th, 2007 at 11:39 pm
It’s apparent that a lot of work went into making the rooms work. Really cool that we can now group people from different IMs into the same room. What I’ve been trying to figure out, though, is how to delete friends from the room? Or is there a “no kick off” policy? Is it meant to be that once a friend logs in, only that friend has the ability to remove themself, or have the room initiator ban them?
May 14th, 2007 at 11:45 pm
Quite nifty, thanks for all the hard work. I am a big fan of your application, and am glad you provide such an awesome community. Good to see you guys are finding ways of building revenue, would hate to see you all go away. A small suggestion if I may, would be to enumerate the number of people in a room, if it is public, on the find more rooms popup, maybe between the description, and the posted media. Again thanks for the site.

You Kats and Chix, like google, have out done yourselves again with meebo rooms. Great Job. I can’t begin to tell you how awesome they are. I have already met 3 people with similar interests that I would have otherwise never have met.
I love how any foul words get replaced with *’s. Great addition. Can’t thank you enough for that one. Only downside i’ve seen is with guest accounts. Many of the im’s I’ve gotten have been sexual solicitaions…grrr. Personal MeeboChat rooms are awesome.
Again keep up the good work. Your all doing a superfantastyk job!!!

May 15th, 2007 at 12:44 am
I can’t see all the online buddy only offline, why???
May 15th, 2007 at 12:54 am
“Hey it’s me again” – now that i’ve tried manually to add my friends (who are online but aren’t displayed AT ALL), and tried to chat with them, i noticed that all the chat windows are BLANK. And every chatroom is blank too.
You people ruined meebo! Boohoo!
May 15th, 2007 at 12:55 am
GUYS EMPTY YOUR CACHE AND RE-OPEN BROWSERS BEFORE YOU TRY THE NEW MEEBO. TRY THIS BEFORE YOU POST PROBLEMS.THANKS.

this is very good site for chatting…bye
May 15th, 2007 at 1:23 am
Sometimes I wish meebo could just stay simple. Now that its a whole massive thousand load of chat rooms its going to get picked up by the people at work and get blocked on the network. *sigh* I know innovation is all important…. but still.
May 15th, 2007 at 1:28 am
What if i cannot flush my cache – because of usage restrictions by the administrator?
How do i get meebo to work then?
Or am i just completely …ed?
I agree with Jules – for everyone’s benefit, meebo should have stayed simple.
May 15th, 2007 at 1:41 am
OS: WinXp v.5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp1_gdr.070227-2254 : Service Pack 2)
Browser: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
(through a corporate proxy)
Same exact problem as pkspks:
- only shows Offline contact list, the Online contacts simply disappear (even after clearing cache and cookies and restarting Firefox)
- “undefined” links at the bottom
- some Online contacts appear in the Offlinelist…
I’m gonna send a screenshot by mail…
Please please please correct it!
(and it’s a bit slower to load than the previous version, which was somewhat slow on certain computers)
May 15th, 2007 at 1:45 am
I wish I could move the bar at the bottom to relocate it at the top,.
May 15th, 2007 at 1:46 am
Wow, great work guys. I love it!
May 15th, 2007 at 1:49 am
why reinvent irc all the time?
it would be cool if meebo rooms would be allowed to be used for irc chatrooms
May 15th, 2007 at 2:42 am
Cool! Really cool! But your servers seem a bit stressed… at the moment…
May 15th, 2007 at 2:45 am
nice but seems slow to load now. i hope this is just a temporary slowdown.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:49 am
Really cool, but when I tried to create a room, it was hang, and after reconnect, i found that I lost all my logs. Pls check the problem!
May 15th, 2007 at 2:50 am
I tink meebo is cool but there is no facility to allow u 2 transfer data between users like MSN. So if u incorporate this in meebo then this will add the final touch 2 meebo.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:06 am
Hi,

(To developers: I personally apreciate the you guys the classic version as well, and keep up the good work!)
May 15th, 2007 at 3:51 am
Sorry guys, I found a bug, it may just be me though. If you post the url in chat for the meebo room that you are in, then the whole page freezes.
May 15th, 2007 at 4:08 am
I’d embeded the chatrooms and it helps a lot. The cool stuffs are the videos. Where can we post bugs if ever we found some?
Thank you guys….. Long live meebo!
May 15th, 2007 at 4:08 am
Really very nice. But we will need Moderators and the ability to add a Bot, which serves us !beer
May 15th, 2007 at 4:31 am
Great release.
You guys should consider posting a screencast to DemoMyApp.com.
Congrats again.

Great feature! but in just 15 minutes, i can see it already turning into a camfrog-esque cesspool of perverts and dirtbags making suggestive comments to anything they think might be female.
Might want to put a disclaimer…”you may be asked to ‘open brest’ by strangers from other nations.”
May 15th, 2007 at 5:25 am
Hi,
Its very ambitious project, but some how its too memory greedy , after new release my Fire Fox consumes 119380K , it kinda makes FF slow, I would guess it would be better if Rooms are optional and opens through a link or you should develop a windows client, this would really help as your original Idea of having a web-based chat client stand up in the crowd,
May 15th, 2007 at 5:25 am
this has caused me network interuption and meebo is my only means of connection
May 15th, 2007 at 5:31 am
i love yall
May 15th, 2007 at 5:45 am
Hey this sounds very cool! Can´t wait to try the new stuff.
But till now it looks great…congrats guys! Good work!
May 15th, 2007 at 5:47 am
I CANT SEE MY CONTACTS ANYMORE!
May 15th, 2007 at 5:51 am
Are you guys working to bring webcam support also? To broadcast ourself, all we need to do is to plug in a webcam and invite people. That would be really cool.
Oh btw, this is a real cool release. congrats!
May 15th, 2007 at 5:57 am
So this morning, I did my routine as usual…
Get coffee on the way to the office. Turn on the radio so I can listen to the morning talk show. Turn on the computer. Check my office mail. Open Gmail. Open Meebo.
Boy was I surprised to see this new little tool bar across the bottom of the screen! Meebo Rooms! How exciting! Immediately I began searching through the list of existing rooms – of course there are already a ton! I also created my own room for the city in which I live. If anyone cares to chat with someone on the East coast, that’s http://www.meebo.com/rooms/greensboronc haha
)
Anyway, it’s always exciting when new features come out, especially the ones that facilitate conversation among friends and also create ways to meet and chat with new people!
Keep up the good work! Long live Meebo!
-Rich

great work guys i really like it but as mentioned before my online list disappeared once
and why have some ppl another color as their nickname color?
May 15th, 2007 at 6:03 am

May 15th, 2007 at 6:07 am
I can not talk with anyone on my contact list. When they send a message it is just a white box with nothing in it and it only shows the people offline. Can you please help?
May 15th, 2007 at 6:12 am
i kinda don’t get it. i mean we already had group chats. i guess this is a feature for people who want to embed their chats into other websites? most ppl already have their client apps or else i tell them to use meebo.com as it is, so what’s the bfd?
sorry. i know you guys worked hard on this but it just seems to be the kind of thing microsoft adds to turn a good app into bloatware.
May 15th, 2007 at 6:21 am
Honestly, no offense intended: How is adding *chat rooms* considered a big upgrade? Aren’t chat rooms widely considered a waste of time? Outside of teenagers flirting with each other, and perhaps the random anonymous visitor who throws out an obscenity before quickly moving on, who uses them?
If you’re going to upgrade Meebo, why don’t you concentrate on adding features that will allow us to completely get rid of the other chat clients?
P.S. Isn’t there any way to completely turn off the chat room bar?
May 15th, 2007 at 6:39 am
I was also having the problem of an undefined logon. Just clear your cache, as noted in the blog.
May 15th, 2007 at 6:40 am
you guys really are an inspiration to some of us start ups… i spread the meebo word everywhere for you! You should have seen the day Yahoo brought out something similar and all the guys on TotalFark were saying “it’s called MEEBO, it’s been around forever…good job being a day late Yahoo” LOL!

You are all doing an excellent job at making some real innovations that separate yourselves from the other IM companies. Unfortunately, file transfer between peers is not available. Are there some technical details regarding JavaScript opening a file/save dialog that I am unaware of, or is the logistics of handling files by your servers too much of a load?
I’m really interested in the reasons why, and seeming that your posts can be extremely (I’m thusly glad) technical, I wonder why such a base feature cannot yet be implemented. Your team is exceptional, and your product is getting even better. File transfer, as a nearly de-facto standard for IM, still seems to be missing from your list of features.
Regardless, I love you and your team’s product, and encourage you to keep working on it. It’s getting better all the time !
Cheers,
tonehog
May 15th, 2007 at 7:07 am
I really like the new system, but the first thing I looked for when jumping into http://wwwl.meebo.com/user/nfriedly/room/ as a guest was a way to rename myself, but it wasn’t obvious.
Then I tried to send a message and it became very obvious, however the default name was still used on the first message
[10:03] guest955: hi
[10:03] Meebo Message: guest955 is now known as nate2
[10:03] nate2: …
Also, the timestamps here don’t show it, but the first line appears after I typed in my new name, but with my default name. Then the second and third lines appeared together after I typed the third line.
Oh, and I’ve been wanting /me support since forever…
May 15th, 2007 at 7:12 am
Hi there,
I´m not quite sure if I really like this new feature, coz I´m getting disconnections the whole day through. Has it something to do with the new chatrooms or do I have to blame the ICQ Network?
If it´s an ICQ issue, I think I´m really going to like the rooms, otherwise…
May 15th, 2007 at 7:14 am
Hello and thanks for the new cool features.
But I think we lost the ability to see if somebody has us on their buddy list when that user is offline. I even used meebo when I had access to msn just because it was easier to see if any of my contacts still has me on their buddy list. Now I only get a “User is offline” msg.
Please bring back that functionality
Regards…
May 15th, 2007 at 7:17 am
Wow! Y’all are amazing!
May 15th, 2007 at 7:17 am
New meebo won’t work in Firefox.
I tried clearing the Cache!
It works in IE.
Help!
Thanks.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:18 am
WOW! Meebo Rooms are GREAT fun… and you have to like the props like this one in Mediapost this am:
http://publications.mediapost.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=Articles.san&s=60350&Nid=30393&p=395620
I haven’t seen any of the bugs mentioned above… I seem to have my chat logs fine… and all of my online contacts are… well… online (if they’re supposed to be?). All good. Congrats on another very successful release.
That said… I have ONE minor suggestion: Moving the “your user name/password is incorrect” message to go into the same “block” as the login. Can’t TELL you how many times I’ve missed this… and seen other people miss this message…
Keep up the GREAT work.

I’m using FireFox, and I’m getting a log of disconnects.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:25 am
Honestly I can’t believe the number of bugs in this release. Just unexcusable. Worse part is everyone is just praising you guys. “Congrats on another very successful release”…if this is how you define very successful then I don’t think you guys need to be making any more changes.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:26 am
I can’t see my contacts anymore. I don’t care about rooms, I just want it plain and simple. Stop bloating the software… I just got disconnected (this has never happened before). If you want to make some money put some ads on the desktop part of the old version.
If this isn’t fixed soon I’ll be looking for another solution.
You provide a great service, don’t screw it up.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:28 am
Also, why do you think chat rooms are a huge upgrade? Chat rooms are a waste of time.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:30 am
Hi, newly introduced rooms are very useful..thanks for the new feature..anyways i’m getting a signout problem with gtalk account in meebo. It is disconnecting frequently about 10minutes…Ok Thanks again guys..
May 15th, 2007 at 7:31 am
You screwed up the buddy list I cant see my online contacts. Fix it for FireFox. The damn site was fine before who really cares about chat rooms not like there isnt enough of those already online.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:32 am
Great. I mean, I don’t really need a chatroom, but it’s a nice feature in case I do need one.
So when will Meebo work with Opera?
May 15th, 2007 at 7:36 am
I’d also like to note the fact that clearing my cache and cookies and restarting my browser only further screwed up my web browsing, since I use my cookies and cache all the time. Meebo STILL refuses to work.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:39 am
Hi, there. Im Brazilian, and I like Meebo very much.
But since rooms was activate in the portal, I Didn’t see my friends in the list.
I hope that this problem will be corrected very soon.

May 15th, 2007 at 7:40 am
Can one permanently remove this room feature thing and the room banner, these are features I AM NOT, nor would I ever be interested in, like many of the posts I use Firefox, don’t have to many issues I cant resolve, mainly right click and remove
If you want someone that has used meebo for a long time contact me via 415-843-0194
Remember the programming principle KISS (Keep It Simple .. .) this is not simple, you have now wasted a few moments of my time every time I choose to use Meebo.
May 15th, 2007 at 7:43 am
YouTube, MetaCafe ! GREAT !!!
But how about DailyMotion ?
http://www.dailymotion.com
Please give us that !!!
May 15th, 2007 at 7:45 am
this could be the beginning of the end. please give us an option to disable this and other subsequent useless features completely. things like this effectively take away the simplicity and minimalism that was once the most attractive thing about meebo.
May 15th, 2007 at 8:02 am
launch is over hyped.
May 15th, 2007 at 8:07 am
I use meebo as a place where I can IM my friends. That’s all I want meebo for. I want a simple fast site that works 99.3% of the time or better. I don’t have the paitence to wait around for the bugs of a new release to be fixed. I’ll go somewhere else that works. I’m not one of the ignorant that think Google is the only search engine, AIM is the only IM protocol, and Meebo is the only chat site out there.
Quite frankly, I think the new features suck. Who cares if you can show video or whatever in a chat room? I really don’t like that bottom bar, it really dosn’t belong in the formerly clean looking meebo. Feature bloat makes software go from awesome to usless very quickly. Yes, it gives you developers something to do, but do I really need anything other than a IM client that works all the time, every time?
What was the motivation for this? What is the goal of Meebo? To provide as many services as possible? To become the next big thing? Where is this going? Don’t become an isolated self-driven community of coders, driven by internal forces. (a.k.a. Microsoft) Remember the users.
May 15th, 2007 at 8:11 am
The only problem is that when I log in to my msn everyone seems to be offline and its impossible not to have 1 person online… hope you can solve this problem. but its amazing to see all the new things you have done! CONGRATS AND KEEP THE GOOD WORK!
May 15th, 2007 at 8:13 am
Cool feature and great work.
One request. Can I clear the contents of the chat window?
Also I think there is a problem getting Google videos to load into the media player. It only works if the room is reloaded (using Firefox 2.0.0.3). Keep up the good work
May 15th, 2007 at 8:16 am
Very nice feature, I’ve been looking for good web-based chat room software for a while. I would like to request better moderation options, including:
- Being able to “promote” other users to moderate chat rooms.
- Being able to ban and UNBAN users
May 15th, 2007 at 8:18 am
One more thing. Why do people say “great work, awesome!” and then say that something dosn’t work? Uh, if it dosn’t work, it’s not great work. Are the masses so easily dazzled by new features that they overlook the loss of functionalty and stability? (wait, windoze XP, Vista, IE 7, uh, yeah I guess they do)
Is there a way to get rid of my chat room? And the bar thing at the bottom?
May 15th, 2007 at 8:24 am
If I accidentally remove a ‘Room’ from my buddy list; How can I add it back?
May 15th, 2007 at 8:25 am
Having problems seeing who is ‘on line’ this morning. Are there problems?

Hey guys, I love meebo. What I espeically love about it is how clean and easy it is. there isn’t a bunch of pointless clutter everywhere, it’s just messenging. That is the single greatest reason why meebo is better than all of it’s client-server counterparts…. that said, today it got a little worse. New features that I don’t want cluttering up what was a very nice interface…. I guess I would offer two points: 1, at some point you have to stop developing and 2, if you think you’re not at part 1 yet, at least let me turn this stuff off with an easy to find button.
May 15th, 2007 at 8:41 am
Great but:
– It’s a little bit too cluttered.
– When logging in using Firefox, I get a blank contact list.
In my opinion, not a good thing for meebo.

The meebo rooms are a great idea, but the general chat rooms are so 1990’s. I just went in yellowroom for a second to check it out, and it’s filled with under-20 rude, immature people flinging insults. Been there, done that. Moving on.
May 15th, 2007 at 8:52 am
I have a question, like to talk,
May 15th, 2007 at 8:57 am
congrats! all that take-out has paid off;p
May 15th, 2007 at 9:02 am
Blank Contact List: through corporate proxy, its great that it works in IE but I have a mac,
also the bottom bar is undefined in every browser
Cleared Cache and Cookies
Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Then I went and tried it in:
Safari Version 2.0.4 (419.3)
And then I tried:
Camino Version 2007022813 (1.0.4)
All three browsers yield no result and now I am aimless at work, also sending this via email.
May 15th, 2007 at 9:04 am
I saw the rooms thing and clicked around a bit only to ask myself “why?”
To me, it seems like misplaced development time, I do however see how it could be profitable but it just doesnt seem to fit “meebo”
Meebo is an IM application, so why tie all these new features into a chat room? I think it would have been a better idea to make “widgets” like a video player, flickr viewer, etc that are freestanding so rather than having to make a room you could just put an “insert media” button somewhere that could invoke any one of the widgets to show content to one or many friends.
It just seems like you are focusing on the wrong thing, the chat window is completely pointless yet it takes up most of the screen real estate. All I want is to watch a Popular Mechanics video and I have to be distracted by:
[09:02] vivekian: has joined the room
[09:02] raymerayme: oi oi oi
[09:02] chad_rainey: has left the room
[09:02] alan: has joined the room
[09:02] mrhughmac: has left the room
[09:02] guest6970: bonjour
[09:02] nirlenechagas: has joined the room
[09:02] ravenclub: has joined the room
[09:02] raymerayme: aloha
[09:02] Aspan: has left the room
[09:02] hunk: has joined the room
Anyway, I applaud you guys for trying to get out of the IM box I just think you have handcuffed yourselves with the chat room stuff. Good luck!
May 15th, 2007 at 9:04 am
I cleared my cache. I restarted my browser. When I go to meebo.com Firefox (2.0.0.3) just goes into a loop & never loads the page. So I can’t even tell if the chat room feature is worthwhile.
May 15th, 2007 at 9:06 am
Oh and one more thing, when are we going to get an Apollo Meebo application, that would make my day!
May 15th, 2007 at 9:07 am
buuu, is too slow!
if i don´t like the popup of room??? what can i do?
thnxs guys!

I have a combination question-suggestion for future Meebo Rooms development, particularly in the realm of increasing Meebo’s use-ability on a variety of web communities.
In particular, on many web communities members have established account identities that they may want to continue to use while chatting on an embedded Meebo Room. Would it be possible to develop Meebo Rooms such that site administrators could link member account sessions to their site’s particular Meebo Room(s). For example, members signed into a forum that head over to the Meebo Room could find that their default nickname is their account name rather than “guest user eight million.”
I could envision a number of other branching features connected to such integrations. For example, the ability to limit “guest” chat (i.e. not logged into meebo chats) only to users logged into that given site, or the ability to associate further site-specific account information with identification within the Meebo Room. Meebo could find itself in the business of providing top-notch community chat opportunities for a broad swath of sites… perhaps even sites willing to pay for extra customization.
What do you think? Feasible or far out?
May 15th, 2007 at 9:21 am
i am using the latest firefox and the meebo page loads instantly for me. could be some folk don’t have some things configured right? at any rate……..meebo is my main chat client and i she works well for me. my buddy list is there and everything like it should be. thanx again meebo team for more innovation and toys. take care, wrongway

Wow…that was weird! I got kicked off for one moment last night, I log back on and all the sudden I’ve got this THING at the bottom of my screen with it’s “Featured room”…I’m like WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!?!? I try it and IT IS SO FREEING COOL!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
May 15th, 2007 at 9:52 am
How do I invite someone into my room? Is there a Meebo rooms FAQ or how-to? I enjoy Meebo alot; just feeling like an idiot now…

May 15th, 2007 at 10:07 am
Chatrooms on steroids hmm? Sounds great.
May 15th, 2007 at 10:12 am
Excellent stuff! One really really small thing – I switched to the Green skin today, and the bottom few pixels across the new bottom bar are still Blue.
May 15th, 2007 at 10:12 am
First good work thinking of a brand new feature and implementing it.
Now for the critique….
1. I don’t like the clutter. Is there a way of hiding and unhiding the bottom bar?
2. Why are the chatroom groups on the top of my buddy list. Can i make them alphabetically arranged as the rest of the groups? Or at least have the ability to move them down?
3. You provide the classic classic meebo on classic.meebo.com and you have the current meebo as well. Is there a way of gettign the intermediate meebo (which is the latest meebo as of May 13th 2007).
4. My gmail and msn keeps getting disconnected.
5. I would have liked to have features such as file xfer, voice/video and other common IM features before ability for multimedia chat.
I’ll try to post more information about the chat feature as I begin to use it more.
May 15th, 2007 at 10:15 am
Love this new chat!!
Its awesome!
Although I have already experianced a few glitches from the rooms I created, its still a great communication tool.
Keep up the good work!
May 15th, 2007 at 10:23 am
Not bad, I probably won’t use the features a whole lot but it will rock for the gaming groups I am in, since we are all over the nation
May 15th, 2007 at 10:28 am
Looks nice. I look forward to the repair of the network interruptions. Every time the “Featured Room” shifts, or if someone logs in or out on my contact lists, there are pauses. And I keep getting dumped off of GChat and MSN.
Good work though. Meebo’s still the best thing out there, and it’s great that you’re always adding features.
May 15th, 2007 at 10:30 am
i only see my offline contacts as well..
May 15th, 2007 at 10:35 am
Love the rooms stuff at the bottom, but with my green backround, I can’t see the white text. Is there an easy way to change that or alert the default font color?
You guys rock! Keep up the good work
May 15th, 2007 at 10:35 am
is it me or did it just break functionality in firefox 2.0.0.3 on win xp?
May 15th, 2007 at 10:51 am
I don’t know how to get help from this system, but after this upgrade some of my buddies are missing and the rest all appear offline. I am on Safari on a Mac, so should I just chalk this up to Macdudes get screwed?
I will try to be patient, but I am already having to go to the original services to keep my contacts. Very dangerous situation if that happens to a lot of your customers. Never want them to get used to NOT using meebo.
May 15th, 2007 at 10:52 am
I get error message, abort script and no contacts in Firefox. I get error message, abort script and can not send messages or get chat rooms in IE
What gives!!?!?
May 15th, 2007 at 11:00 am
So if your having problems with Firefox
log out of Meebo
go to Tools>Clear Private Data>Cache (although I just selected all)>Clear Private Data
then restart Firefox
Meebo should now work again, worked for me.
May 15th, 2007 at 11:09 am
Very cool features!
I just don’t like HOW the media is implemented into the rooms. I can’t resize a chat window to make it really small because the lower input box disappears. The media is taking up too much space…
What do you think of a Mac-like approach? Don’t put the slider inside of the window but let it slide outwards. The window content needn’t change anymore. I think that approach is an improvement for people who don’t have too much space on their screen. 15.4″ notebook just isn’t as big as a 23″ desktop monitor

I think these changes are nice, but today my computer is giving me nasty messages about a script off this page slowing down my computer’s performance and I keep getting disconnected. :/
May 15th, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Okay i have a question for you guys.
Why the hell is my meebo account all screwed up?
It doesn’t show the people who are online and when people im me it does not show what they write. It only shows the name on the top of the im box and the entire thing on the inside is white.
Please can someone help me?
Or fix ti for me becuase it is really getting annoying and i need to use Meebo to beable to comunicate with my freinds and family back home.
May 15th, 2007 at 12:21 pm
Hey guys, normally i dont mind any updates you do cuz i think that theyre great~! BUTTTTTTTT i have to say i really really hate this newest update
there is no longer a chat history available if i close and reopen a buddys IM window.. that was my favorite part about meebo cuz i always close the windows by accident.. now if i missed something.. i would never know~! and is there a way to close the chatroom window? its obstructive :\ and i noticed the roll over function on the buddy lists have changed too.. its now a white background rather than a translucent one.. i guess i can get used to that
but please please please bring back that chat history thing (i dont even know if im calling it the right thing) cuz it was my all time favorite function of meebo
thanks guys

May 15th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
Is there a way to RENAME a room that I have created?
I think there was some sort of a “network interruption” while I was creating the room, so it came out as simply, “brucewagner’s room”.
But I would like the name to be: “The Bruce Wagner Show – brucewagner.com”
Any way to change the name now that it has been created?
May 15th, 2007 at 12:45 pm
Bruce: Right click on the room name in your buddy list and choose Rename Room.

i have a question? why the meebo istant message wont work..well it will let me log in but it wont let you chat!
May 15th, 2007 at 1:08 pm
Thanks for answering, Neil.
But, unfortunately, I tried that already. It does not work.
It allows me to rename the Room, but as soon as I press Enter… It reverts back to the old original name….
Also — even if that worked — is that a system-wide name change…. or only a name change on MY buddy list…?
May 15th, 2007 at 1:10 pm
How many people here are planning to add a CHATROOM to your own web site, blog page, myspace profile page, etc….?
May 15th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Bruce: How about companies that already run official forums for customers to meet and discuss non-software products? Very useful feature, IMO, just needs more moderation options to move from “good” to “amazing”.
May 15th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
um, i don’t see any worthwhile added features. Rooms. OK, what else? How about skype connectivity? How about webcam? File transfer?
May 15th, 2007 at 1:32 pm
Chat Rooms YAY!!…..now all of a sudden people that quit Yahoo chat rooms 10 years ago will come back and chat….or will they??
Its nice to improve upon decade old offerings…..but can we have some real new innovative features……I have a lot of respect for you guys but come on…..and with all the hype you built about hard work and the money u raised…..this is all I get?
May 15th, 2007 at 1:47 pm
I think we should keep meebo the samee….or have 2 different types of meebos that we can go to…and yes the chat rooms are a great idea
May 15th, 2007 at 1:55 pm
I think we sould keep meebo, because it is great!!!!!!
May 15th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
There’s already a room pre-created for my account, which I configured further—yet when I’m logged in and in that room it shows me as a “Guest” not a Member. I created another room for my band, configured it, am logged into meebo and again, when I click that room to open it, I’m listed as a “Guest”, not a Member. How do I specify who is a Member of my room? How do I make myself a Member of my own room?
May 15th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
ok i have a question people… please help me!
so i have my own room… and ive put some videoclips in it… well some of the clips dont work and i have no idea how to delete them! please help me! if you kno the answer to my problem it would be much appreciated if you could im me at megabucks2114. thank you!!

May 15th, 2007 at 2:19 pm
in addition, even if i know the buddy’s name, on firefox, i can’t even send them a message because when i click the IM anyone button, it comes up with a completely blank window.
i liked meebo a whole lot better yesterday
May 15th, 2007 at 2:21 pm
well that’s good, didn’t put my first comment on here at all..
basically, with firefox, my buddy list shows none of my online buddies, or groups
and with the latest version of IE for windows 2000 i can’t even reach the meebo page because it decides to continually refresh.
i don’t care about rooms, i want to use meebo for talking to people i know, who were on my buddy list
May 15th, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Oddly enough, Opera is the only browser that i can get to work, and it has some of the worst AJAX reading i have ever seen.
Netscape just crashes and quits.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:28 pm
I like the new chat feature, but I do not get a notification sound when someone joins the chat room so I am missing alot of people because I don’t keep it up on my screen all the time.
May 15th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Hi.. G’Job! G’Job!
I like so much the new feature. I had a post on my blog about that.. Check this out (em português) http://lenouveaux.blogspot.com/2007/05/meebo-rooms.html
May 15th, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Gah! The new features are good but it is incompatible behind work proxys and firewalls… The classic.meebo.com disconnects randomly… Please update the classic.meebo.com to the release before this one… If i am not able to use the previous release anymore I think I am going to have to abandon meebo… :\
May 15th, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Its definitely an impressive feature, and I applaud you all on your hard work. I understand how the coding, database and server management can get tedious especially with large projects like this.
Still, visiting any of the rooms I cant help but be reminded of the era of AOL chatrooms. I can only cringe remembering the bots that infested those and can only hope that doesn’t come to haunt your new feature.
I’m sure many will love and enjoy these rooms, I personally don’t have any use for them but I congratulate you on this next step and can only wish you the best.
Good luck
May 15th, 2007 at 2:40 pm
holy toledo, the ‘instant’ was taken out of my IM today – so slooooowwww
May 15th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Um…. it just keeps loading and reloading when i try to open it- especially annoying since it’s my homepage. cleared the cache and opened a new browser window. i’m using firefox 2.0.0.3. I really like your product, but it doesn’t really seem to be working. little help?
May 15th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Good Job!
May 15th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
yes i agree… i liked meebo a LOT better yesterday =/
May 15th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
I love meebo, and I thought this was a great idea — what a full featured chat room product!
I entered an obscure band’s room, left for a few hours, and came back. By the time I had, I had no less than four IMs from random people in the room asking my asl. What is wrong with the interwebs? Meebo Rooms has been up for less than a day and it’s already getting AOL’d!
May 15th, 2007 at 2:52 pm
I’ve been having problems with Meebo ALL DAY since the update. I can’t send any messages with MSN, always get “Meebo Message: Unable to send message to “. Google Talk also gets disconnected all the time.
I tried reconnecting, clearing my browser cache, rebooting, nothing helps. MSN sometimes has problems like that but usually it goes away after a page refresh, not today. It sucks. People see me online and can send me messages, but I can’t respond. Definitely a Meebo problem, not MSN.
Please fix it!
May 15th, 2007 at 2:53 pm
once again… can you update your classic meebo to the one before this launch? that would help bunches!
May 15th, 2007 at 3:00 pm
awesome site.. it’s like all-in-one Apps.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
The added rooms are a really great feature! I do have one complaint though….
I really can’t stand people “asl-ing” me as soon as i log into a room. There is no way for me to block them either? I think guests shouldn’t be able to message meebo members outside of the room they are in….
May 15th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
So I finally spent some times in the rooms and the biggest changes I want to see:
1) Make an easy way to get rid of media once it’s uploaded. Tubgirl has been sitting in the media tray and I’m not sure how to flag it to get rid of it.
2) Have an option to turn off censoring in chat. Some people really don’t mind the swearing.
May 15th, 2007 at 3:30 pm
I use the diceroller a lot, because I play roleplaying games on Meebo (it’s really great to have something here at the Uni). But now, I can no longer see the results I get. I’m not sure if it’s because of the updates, but I expect so, I’ve never had this problem before.
Strange thing is, I can still see the results of other people’s rolls, and they can still see mine, I just can’t see my own.
I’ve tried clearing my cache and starting meebo after that, but to no effect. Any way to resolve this?

May 15th, 2007 at 4:36 pm
This is frustrating. As a follow-up to my previous comment I have still not been successful to get MSN working. It logs on, I can see who is on, people can write me messages, but I cannot respond, always get the same stupid error message, and after a while I usually get some other MSN error from Meebo.
Since unfortunately most of my contacts are on MSN and I cannot use the MSN stand-alone messenger behind my company firewall, after this update Meebo has effectively become useless for me, which is sad, because I have been a loyal user since the very beginning.
If these issues cannot get resolved anytime soon I will have to check out some of your competitors in this space, maybe they have MSN working reliably.
May 15th, 2007 at 4:41 pm
Another follow-up: It works fine if I DON’T log into my Meebo account but use my MSN credentials directly. Tried it now three times back and forth. MSN works fine when not using the Meebo account, but inside my Meebo account it doesn’t work and gives me the error message. Reproducible in both IE6 and Firefox 2.0.
Also, it would be nice to have some other way to submit bugs/problems, as I’m 75% sure nobody is ever going to read this comment.
May 15th, 2007 at 5:06 pm
i was wondering if you were allowed to see webcam threw meebo…
May 15th, 2007 at 5:07 pm
Wow… you’ve guys have done great.
I’m not sure if this is already here, but I don’t see it.
But quick suggestion you should make it so you can make moderators in your chatroom for when you go away people can still watch over…
Also… does click Flag Inappropriate remove it from your chat? If not I think you (Host) should be able to remove images from the list.

Thank you guys for the Meebo update – Sandy, thank you very much for the advice on clearing my firefox cache, that did the trick! To the above poster who had trouble seeing the chat history, mine is working fine (thankfully, as I also love that feature!), not sure if something might have changed in your settings. I’m looking forward to checking out some rooms! Congrats Meebo programmers and all who helped work on this new update!

I am a meebo fan from China. I like everything about meebo, your ads, your story, etc. To me, your story is something like a miracle!
You may know that QQ of Tencent is the most popular IM server in China, I wonder if you can add QQ here, so that more and more chinese users can use meebo. As far as I know most chinese users use both MSN and QQ, I myself is an example. MSN is for daily work and QQ for entertainment.
Actually IM port is forbidden in many Chinese companies especially enterprises, Meebo could be very popular in such companies as a website port is enough for them. No need to install any software, no need to worry about the monitoring, isn’t it wonderful?
I am looking forward to logging on QQ one day by meebo! I am sure you will win almost all chinese IM users by the day you successfully release a meebo version with QQ! By the way, imtata of China provide similar service with Meebo, both QQ and MSN are available!
Wish you a great success!

I’m a meebo from Oregon! Your IM is better than anything I have ever tried. This works with a lot of email and IM types. So yours is better than the ones i have tried.

i can login without any problems, but after about 20-50mins (dont really know how long), when i try to send a message to a contact, it pops up a message to the effect of “your logon password is incorrect or you have logged on from another location”. At that point, the browser freezes up for around 10secs, then i had to login again.
my environment: windows server 2003 standard edition SP1, ie7 rtm with all security patches uptodate, running from behind an office firewall (that’s the reason why i m using meebo). i have included meebo.com in my trusted sites list.

Hi,
I think the rooms are still buggy, kept logging me out.
But a good innovative idea, but i think it’d be a good optional feature for now tho (i.e. I’d like to disable it in preferences until it becomes more stable.. )

Hi i’m from mexico city, a just wanna tell you that all my partners at work and I are having problems with your new meebo relase, the problem is that we can use meebo just for 10 o 15 minutes and then it get disconected, so a try at home with a huge bandwith and then boooom the same!!! please fix it i love it, just for your information we’re using firefox 2.0 in both linux and windows.
Congratulations for your excelent work.
May 15th, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Wow, good job. this is a very good way to advertise without putting up banners and pop ups. this is genius.
some suggestions.
more rooms should be pre made to allow people to post what they want. just as an observation, alot of people are using this as almost a dating service, putting up their myspaces and such. this would also alleviate some of the random websites that are part of say rock climbing.
good job
May 15th, 2007 at 9:36 pm
When we login using firefox (2.0), there is a bug which is showing UNDEFINED word in the bottom panel and when you log off.
But if I login using IE7 there is no such word …. it is showing me correct wording.
May 15th, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Awesome, Awesome, Awesome!!!!! I was indeed a good jo done. Kudos to the team. Agreeing to what Jonathan mentioned, there should me more pre-defined rooms. Moreover, anonymous access to rooms is allowed, as i can see.
This means people can use chat names like Guest123 or something. It would be better if we can restrict it to the actual alias of the user. Its just a suggetsion, though.
In all, Great Effort!!!! Congratulations!!!

May 16th, 2007 at 12:05 am
Can you PLEASE add an option to permanently remove meebo rooms? As if the old loading time wasn’t long enough, Meebo now takes twice the amount of time to load and I have switched back to using individual IM clients just because of this.
May 16th, 2007 at 1:06 am
I suggest having tab completion in meebo rooms for users in the room. For example, if you wanted to type:
BobFredMan: how’s it going?
you could type Bob-[TAB] and it would complete the rest of the name.
I believe mIRC has this feature.
Also, a kick option rather than just ban would be nice. I don’t know if this has already been suggested.
May 16th, 2007 at 1:22 am
This is something i didn’t need.
I am getting some disconnection and what for? Nothing.
I mean, please give us people the possibility to have the 13 may version of meebo instead of the actual if you just want to stick to this chatrooms feature.
And by the way the “rename chat” is not working, there is no possibility to permanently DELETE a chatroom you created, and no way to delete a media you shared.

Hi,
First of all thank you for your effort on the upgrade. I have not tried the chatrooms yet but when I tried to rename my chatroom, the name did not change. I right clicked and selected ‘Rename’ and typed in the new name and clicked ‘Enter’ but it still did not change. Help!
May 16th, 2007 at 3:41 am
The “pop out on one side of the window” media slider thing I mentioned before (think of Mac OS X sliders which can be “dragged” out of one side of the window) would be great for normal IM as well, I think, although I myself didn’t benefit from that feature very much.
May 16th, 2007 at 4:32 am
a whole group of my msn contacts is missing!
everythimg else is just fine.
I’ve cleared history, cookies, temperary files… but its still the same
even on classic version
May 16th, 2007 at 4:38 am
Oh, how I love you guys! Thanks for the push.
May 16th, 2007 at 4:45 am
if we could register nicknames (like irc) in certain chatrooms, I would want this on my website. however if I placed this on my website right now, staff members are impersonated and made fun of, goatse links are posted, and nothing can be done about it because the ban feature is very easily worked around with a proxy. in fact, the ban system didn’t even do anything on most users.
it i also to cluttered, we don’t want a giant list of featured rooms at the bottom and a list of all the rooms we’ve ever been in on the right. a few links “your rooms”, “recent rooms”, and “”browse rooms” and “”search rooms” would be sufficient. the clutter is not an improvement, the old simplicity was very nice.
great feature, but unfinished.
May 16th, 2007 at 5:20 am
The new version of meebo looks great, thanks guys for your hard work. I did expect there would be some bugs, as I am having problems logging in and then when I do log in after a while I get an error message saying that I cannot connect and that I may be logged on somewhere else as well. I thought switching to classic meebo would resolve this but i still have the same issue, clearing the cache only seems to resolve the issue temporarily. Thanks
May 16th, 2007 at 5:56 am
I want to second Alice’s request and ask that you add QQ support to Meebo. Gaim/Pidgin folded OpenQQ into their client and now I can use QQ on my home computer. But I would love to have it in Meebo. (QQ is the biggest IM client in China. Think of that, a billion new users
And I don’t care much for the rooms feature, but like Nathan Friedly says you might as well add /me support while you’re at it
May 16th, 2007 at 7:35 am
Hi,
In the previous version, message history for that session is displayed in the message panel while chatting. But now it is gone. I don’t want to enable the “Save my IM history to view later”. Will this feature going to be available again?
Thanks,

I really dont know whether this is going to be read by any of the meebo team or not.Its my first comment I am posting.Congratulations Meebo for your rooms.I just cant stop appreciating your efforts.Meebo in itself is such good.In my workplace all messengers jabbers are blocked. Thanks to meebo I use everything in one window teasing my office mates. The thing I was missing using meebo was I was able to chat to my friends in my contact list, but I was not able to chat in chat rooms.Yesterday made my day when I saw rooms in Meebo. You have made my dream true. I am enjoying every bit of it.I dont know why this rooms are disabled today.Hope this will be solved pretty soon.Once again congratulations on your efforts.Keep rocking.Never seen s team as hard working and dedicated as you.

To further secure your IM environment, links should appear in text and not active links. Make the user go through the extra step of copying and pasting a link in their browser, maybe they can use this time to really consider if they want to visit the link.
Just my 2 cents…
Thanks.
May 16th, 2007 at 11:47 am
Wow! Chat rooms! and Instant Messaging!! Uh, wait, this feels just like AOL from nearly a decade ago. Can you guys maybe come up with an original feature–something to wow us? I mean, seriously, the fact that it took you this long just to copy the decade old version of AOL is rather lame. And I have a question: You claim to have written all your stuff on the client side from scratch. Why is it when I un-obfuscate your code, I see dojo everywhere and the code from ajax im (a free im client written in javascript). Did you guys invent dojo and the “ajax im” package? Or did you take it, tweak it and then claim it as original work?
May 16th, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Okay, It was working fine this morning until it disconnected me. Upon logging back in, to find my entire buddy list erased. I hope this is something on Meebo’s side, and that it did not in fact delete my entire buddy list. I have really important contacts in there that are not easy to replace. Anyone else having this problem. I will check my buddy list when I get home.

Cool feature, just wish you would have prepared for the launch a little better. Meebo has been disconnecting me randomly all day. At one point, meebo was redirecting to your sorry.meebo.com site, and was completely down.
Uptime is important to a lot of people.

Hi meebo ppl!!!
Congrats for one more great job.
I would like to suggest to this room featured could be turned off.
I don´t want to use the classic mode and I dont want these heavy duty script running everytime I log on my meebo.
People should have the option to choose if they want to see it or not.

This message will probably get lost in the mix. I wonder if anyone will ever read it.
Unnecessary fluff.
What happened to the unadulterated goodness that filled my simple needs? The meebo I fell in love with? The meebo I got all my friends to use?
Maybe it is because of my connection issues, even over broadband, but I am not satisfied with the changes in release 24. It was too dramatic of a change. Release 23 was almost perfect. Some things needed to be addressed, for the user’s sake.
One gripe with Meebo.
Other clients, on the AJAX client and other downloaded client display text the way the user would change it. One gripe about Instant Message communication that I have is that you cannot get proper sense-stress, like you can in vocal conversations. But you can capitalize you text, aka. screaming (SCREAMING!). This is the easiest way to relay stress on words, especially in Meebo. In other clients, you can make certain words bold, change the color of text, italicize, underline, etc. Meebo makes this harder to do. While people from these clients can send you stressed words, you can reply your WHOLE statement in bold, italics, underlined, changed font, color, etc.
I have not really used the new chat. I have used the old one. It had some flaws, generally in message lag. Also, no logging chats sessions? So although afraid of the future, I am willing to stand by what the future offers. Progress and change work hand in hand.
Fact or fiction?
Rumor has it: Windows Mobile users may be able to use meebo in the near future. Is it true? I would be estatic! Imagine using meebo on my phone. What fun!
If anyone at meebo reads this, please email me. You have my email address, I have no need to post it. And I am generally always on my meebo!

I found out that I can actually remove the defaulted ‘room’ from my list of group so that’s gone. I can also click on the double arrow on the bottom bar and hide all the rooms list so now my meebo is almost looking back to normal.
May 17th, 2007 at 4:53 am
Rooms are dumb. IRC type rooms is 1995 technology… Mind as well just call them #channels … Way to go on the scientific breakthrough meebo team!
Please get rid of them or don’t shove them in our faces as soon as we log in to the web interface..
May 17th, 2007 at 5:56 am
I really like the new idea of the MeeboRooms, but people is being all bitchy about them, sadly enough. Everyone please remember you can use classic.meebo.com, and that’s all, no Rooms for you, so stop bitching and ranting about the new feature!
Keep up the good work Meebo Team! Don’t let these loosers discourage you!
May 17th, 2007 at 6:14 am
Hello,
The last update is interesting. I think the rooms idea is very creative, and could be very useful on many levels from chatting to meet new people, a way to communicate with friends/family, and especially for business needs. For example, imagine creating a room for a support desk, a customer sends in a question. The entire support staff would be notified that a message is sent, and the first available rep could talk to them. This would be useful even for interdepartmental communication.
I look forward to trying this feature out, but I would love to see the ability to create a “room” without the videos. Although the videos are nice to play with, it would be nice to keep a clean look for less social chatting purposes.
May 17th, 2007 at 6:17 am
How do i get bac in to my chatromm?
May 17th, 2007 at 8:07 am
I’m a bread and butter kind of guy. I prefer plain and simple. I don’t suppose you guys would be able to include the ability to *disable* any of the features you implemented, could you? I’d rather not have the roooms menu increasing the amount of memory, bandwidth, and processor time that meebo already uses.
May 17th, 2007 at 8:26 am
I think that the Moderator (Creator) should be able to remove media… EVEN IF IT IS NOT OFFENSIVE…. just because it is not appropriate for that particular chat room….

will there be a meebo mobile site for windows mobile (wm6) / (smartphones w/ free wifi conenctions?) so we dont have to pay for internet services just to use aim msn icq etc..
May 17th, 2007 at 9:13 am
In the Meebo Rooms, I’d like to see this feature:
The room’s Creator (moderator) should have an auto-announce feature…. so that whenever the FIRST person enters the room… (i.e. when it goes from 0 participants to 1 participant)… In other words, when they enter an EMPTY room…
“Hello! Welcome! I have just been notified that you’re here. Hang in there, and give me a minute or two. I’ll join you as soon as I can, if possible.”
THEN…. the system could (OPTIONALLY) immediately notify me that someone is in my chat room by:
Email and/or
SMS text message and/or
automated phone call ?
(my options)
This would encourage people to stay in the room…
Then, when the next person joins, and there are already two people conversing (me & the first person), the third person is 100 times more likely to stay and converse… etc, etc, etc.
This way, if I WANT to encourage conversation and participation in my chat room… I can… much more effectively.
Even better… Allow me to add a short list of 2 or 3 people who would be notified each time my chat room goes from 0 participants to 1 participant… This would increase the chances — even more — that one of us would be able to respond and greet the newly arriving person.
Nothing is a bigger bore & turn-off than an empty room…

Good feature, want to suggest some improvements.
1) After searching for rooms, I found that there was too much visual real estate wasted on the photo. This makes it hard to label one’s room with even a simple descriptor, because after just a few words it trails off into the unknown land of the ellipses. Perhaps a big photo is appropriate for featured rooms, but for user-created rooms it seems a bit much. I’d suggest a different (scrolling up-down only) layout allowing for more real estate for the descriptions.
2) There should be a browse feature listing all available public rooms.
3) after implementing a browse feature, there should be fixed room tags, such as
- gaming
- computer help
- celebrities
- sports
these should be accessible when anyone sets up their own room via checkbox buttons, and then after the checkbox there should be 3 blank checkboxes for users to input their own tags. Then when people browse, there can be a left sidebar with the fixed tags, and let’s say the top 10 popular user-generated tags as well, which would be clickable and which would each accordingly filter the displayed rooms.
May 17th, 2007 at 9:56 am
Two more suggestions for Meebo….
(1) I would like to see a button that would TILE all of my currently non-minimized chat windows… so that I could easily see the full chat windows of about 6 or 8 chats at the same time, plus my full buddy list — all at the same time without overlapping.
(2) A hot key to TAB between each open chat-window and chat-room… (similar to what Alt-Tab does in Windows)
May 17th, 2007 at 10:26 am
yea i like the new rooms. only problem is that now when i scroll my buddy list i can only see a part of people’s profiles. i have cleared my cache and it still doesn’t work. please help. thx
May 17th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
This is a really great idea and people are meeting new friends though it but…we could really use some more ways to keep out unwanted visitors. It makes some of the publicised rooms no fun to be in when you have a bunch of idiots running around shouting “ASL PLZ” and “U ALL SUCK LOLZ”

Great site…
I have been using the meebo rooms a lot and love the news site. I wanted to make a couple of suggestions though…
It would be great if the host of the room had some more options–like the ability to regulate the media that’s contributed. (i.e., websites end up in the media box, but aren’t always appropriate to the room)
Also, when a person enters a room, they can see the conversation up to several lines prior to them entering. While this is very useful, the room host could have the option of clearing the history or just beginning the history upon a guest’s arrival.

Yay Meebo!!!
May 18th, 2007 at 4:36 am
I like very much meebo. Becuase it helps me to meet with new people. But now I am think about some social activities like Global Warming. You know what is global warming and its effects. I am read this blog and I am very impress with this blog.
May 18th, 2007 at 7:11 am
Meebo is doing well
Your “update entries” are very boring and dry!
May 18th, 2007 at 7:35 am
Hey, I love Meebo, but I like the classic better. The best thing about it is that it is small and tight and nondescript. Please leave us with the classic.meebo.com, as that was a great idea for those of us that do not need any more bells and whistles.
great job, thank you!
May 18th, 2007 at 7:41 am
maybe i overlooked it, but I’d like to see an option wher you can delete media without flagging it inappropriate.
Another option would be to turn it off all together.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:18 am
It’d be cool if I could delete the chat log of my embedded chat room.
May 18th, 2007 at 8:36 am
anyway i have to stay home and be sick what would you do in the past time
May 18th, 2007 at 8:54 am
Rooms are cool, but Meebo kicks me out every once in a while.
So momentarily I switched to classic.
Big love from Chile!
PD: To help relieve global warming, everyone can plant a tree. Or two.
May 18th, 2007 at 10:14 am
may I just say comments r 4 stuff on da meebo blogs not 2 chat and fite lopsy do
May 18th, 2007 at 10:17 am
Good job so far….. only issue I see so far is the mix of every possible language on the chat. it’s overwhelming!
that said…. the whole thing is an excellent idea!
May 18th, 2007 at 10:47 am
did any 1 listen 2 me ???????????
May 18th, 2007 at 11:11 am
I can’t use the new version to talk to anyone on MSN. Meebo reports the message couldn’t be delivered.
May 18th, 2007 at 11:45 am
Hi i am testing

May 18th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
add a function that allows video chatting, or allows you to see when skype contacts are online, and youv’e cornered the messenging caht market. My complete uselessness with programming menas I have no idea if this is possible, but if it is, then it would be gold. Great site guys, have been recommennding to all my freinds.
Cheers Marcus

meebo is best idea
May 20th, 2007 at 8:46 am

May 20th, 2007 at 11:54 am
umm i just made a meebo todayy can u make profiles like on aim?
May 21st, 2007 at 6:35 am
I’m fully aware that this whole chatroom toolbars thing -as it looks from my perspective, even if it’s the next best thing since sliced bread- is very important and cool to the meebo fans, but I fail to see the point. Yeah, it’s cool, but anyway.
I use meebo because it’s a cool fast simple web based replacement for gaim, not because of all the wondrous gizmos attached to it, and I don’t think anyone who comes here does.
Yeah, it’s cool, but I’m pretty sure there’s other bigger and dirtier batch of things to make that could seriously improve the main service, like a widgetish means of transporting files between two users.

Was wondering when it would be available to change my display name on ICQ
Thanks for the wonderful product!!!
May 21st, 2007 at 2:24 pm
I love the rooms, but wonder how I can clear out the transcripts of what people have said yesterday and the days before. Also – how do I get rid of the video clips that people have sent to the room??
Thanks!
May 21st, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Some issues I’d like to see addressed in future updates:
1. The ability to delete a video from the line up
2. The ability to be a moderator of a room, and be the only one able to post videos, etc. Basically, give the creator or the ability to control it more.
3. The ability to upload a custom icon for the room, and avatar/icons for users as well.

should be able to clear/delete what was said earlier. someone got on mine and put some ____. anyone know how to clear?
May 24th, 2007 at 12:35 am
The meebo rooms feat is cool, too bad there is no filtering whatsoever when people are posting link that is going to be shown on the slideshow. Some people just irresponsibly posting offensive sites, like porn sites and that really annoys me. A filtering feat is so much needed I think. Anyway, kudos for you guys for making such a great software! I use this regularly when I’m using campus’ computers

I help run a portion of the online advertising of a growing video site. The site has a great mix of funny videos and entertaining videos for everyone.
Anyway, I am writing to you because I have recently viewed your site and am impressed with all of the helpful information. Your site has the potential of reaching out to a wide range of people! I would like to request to have our site posted on your site, by way of paid contextual link advertisement. Let me know how much it would cost me to have my link placed on your main page, or other related internal pages.
I’d be delighted to receive a follow up from you. Please contact me at your earliest convenience so we can further discuss this interesting business opportunity.
