With all of the recent ads and articles, our team can’t wait to see the iPhone’s launch this Friday. We’ve been poring over its technical specs (Safari and 320 x 480 resolution!) and everyone here is wondering, “Does it work with meebo?”
We’ve heard rumors that a few people (primarily lucky developers and journalists) have managed to steal an early glimpse of the iPhone. And even though Apple is only a few miles down the road in Cupertino, they are pretty good at making sure that people like us can’t walk through their doors and ask nicely to borrow one for an afternoon or two.
We’re bubbling over with anticipation and we’d love to settle our internal bets on whether meebo works on the iPhone. And if not, hey! we’d appreciate the opportunity to give it a shot! We’re guessing that someone in the meebo community probably has access to one and if so, we’ll happily offer tshirts, stickers, sneak previews, blog credit, and I’ll happily bake a batch of my homemade ginger cookies to support the team’s meebo mobile initiative.
If ginger cookies sound tempting and you happen to be one of the lucky few with an iPhone who wouldn’t mind sparing it for a few hours, please let us know! You can reach us via email at iphone at meebo dot com. You’ll have the team’s overwhelming gratitude and you are welcome to join in on the fun while we roll up our Safari debugging sleeves.
Take Care!
-Elaine

I’ll have one Friday (as well many) hopefully.
June 25th, 2007 at 2:56 am
Oh my, meebo on iphone… ^___^ I don’t have one but I want to know too. I say it could work. In fact it will work. You guys could probably make it work on an abacus.
=^-^=
Stay cool!
June 25th, 2007 at 3:30 am
It’s really impressive what we have come up with these past 10 years isn’t it? I saw the iphone and I was like wow. I can’t afford it yet though.

I think you mean you’ve been poring over them.
Long live Meebo!
June 25th, 2007 at 4:21 am
Well, seeing as how the iPhone is based off a mobile version of OS X
Maybe it’ll work? I don’t have a mac so I wouldn’t know if meebo works on safari or not, but hopefully, if it doesn’t, I’ll install firefox just to use meebo…
GAH! what’s next? a meebo client for phones?! (hopefully
)
June 25th, 2007 at 5:27 am
why dont u just contact the apple people?
June 25th, 2007 at 5:30 am
My friends and I were just talking about this over the weekend. One works at the Apple Store, and currently has a Blackberry from his “day job” and we were wondering if any web-based IM service would work on them. Meebo’s our favorite, so get hoppin’!
June 25th, 2007 at 5:46 am
I would guess that if it works on Safari (for Mac or PC), then it’ll work on the iPhone.
Now that Apple has released Safari for PC, you can test it with that, even if you don’t have a Mac.
June 25th, 2007 at 5:48 am
I assume you know about the BarCamp for iPhone…

Why dont u just call the apple peeps and ask them
June 25th, 2007 at 5:54 am
does meebo work on any cell phone?
June 25th, 2007 at 6:01 am
cool
June 25th, 2007 at 6:21 am
hey.. I have a Nokia N93 and it’s got a browser based on Safari’s KHTML rendering (http://www.symbian-freak.com/reviews/n93/n93_review_07.htm) . I don’t know how it is comparable to iPhone’s Safari but meebo doesn’t work on my phone. I’m not trying to say that meebo’s not going to be working on the iPhone but If you can make meebo work on my mobile.. that would be superb…
Meebo rocks.. !
June 25th, 2007 at 6:27 am
Hi! Um.. I think that itll work because Steave Jobs (Apple’s CEO) says in his keynote at http://www.apple.com/iphone/ that it will work with ANY website!!!!!
June 25th, 2007 at 6:35 am
I got one, but I’m way over here in Africa, how can I reach you guys. Some guy shoves it out from Dubai the other day….
June 25th, 2007 at 6:36 am
Yeah meebo on iPhone would be cool, but what about Meebo on the nintendo DS with it’s new browser?
June 25th, 2007 at 6:40 am
wat is een Iphone..?
June 25th, 2007 at 6:40 am
I’m pregnant!
June 25th, 2007 at 6:46 am
meebo works with safari (i’m using it right now!).
safari works with iphone.
meebo works with iphone.
that, my friends, is pure logic.
June 25th, 2007 at 6:54 am
I am concerned that iPhone will want to corral us into using their SMS feature at a nickel a pop (or an extra $5/month or whatever it is). Could it be possible that meebo will be actively blocked in order to inflate this useless cost center?
June 25th, 2007 at 7:18 am
Well there are a few way you can figure out how the Iphone is going to work. First off it has to work with the Mac. If it works with the Mac it will most likely be a unix / Linux based operating system. So if Meebo works on a Linux based phone then it should work on the Iphone. Remember Apple does not like to work that hard. They like to wrap existing items in pretty shells and then throw all their dollars into their advertising campaigns. Hype = Profit!!! Remember the Iphone has not even been tested or and the reviews I have read are from people reading the spec sheets. Even so people will be lined up at the door to get one.
Take a look at the following products and see if they do not look familiar:

Thanks All

Well i hope you all have cingular/ATT…because they got a lock on it for awile. Not too impressed with Apple’s “walled garden” approach with the software…basically if they dont make it, it will never happen on the iphone. Makes me all the happier i kept my Treo 700 wx. Love my 3rd party apps! Like Novii Remote, PIM Birthdays, ect….
But myself i try to avoid products w/lowercase 1st letters….so i dont have an iPod (creative zen 30G + fm tuner!), iPhone, iCar, or iHome and never will….but you guys have fun with it and whatever Mr. Jobbs decides you can have on it….
June 25th, 2007 at 7:28 am
welll…..
the iPhone will feature Safari
and like emily said, ,meebo works on safari…
maybe you could make a lower resolution version… wouldn’t the boxes and stuff come out madd big?
i know you can zoom out.. but not everyone can see that well!!!
love meebo so u should do it.
for the fans… for the fans.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:30 am
Meebo works in the test application, just needs shrinking.
I think that meebo needs to develop an interface for just the iphone, its easy to encorp if you guys coded meebo OOP.
http://iphone.borrowadollar.com/interface/
June 25th, 2007 at 7:58 am
hey.. I have a Nokia 6070and it’s got a browser based on Safari’s KHTML rendering (http://www.symbian-freak.com/reviews/6070/6070review_07.htm) . I don’t know how it is comparable to iPhone’s Safari but meebo doesn’t work on my phone. Dearest Emily,
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice (ie., pure logic);
In practice, there is (ie., unanticipated factors).

Does meebo work with the Wii Opera Browser?
June 25th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Hey. There is an iPhone simulator for Mac OS X already out. It’s freeware.
http://www.freemacware.com/iphone-simulator/
June 25th, 2007 at 9:48 am
i know you asked about the iPhone but is anything developing for other smart/pda phones and meebo? For example, I know someone up there mentioned blackberry, i’m about to go out and get the HTC Mogul – 6800 w/ Sprint, a lot of people I know have Treo’s – Palm OS & other windows mobile based phones. I can probably get on meebo thru the web browser but it’d be so much cooler to d/l a program meebo.
just wondering and dropping my two cents
June 25th, 2007 at 10:46 am
i havent, but it will definatley work becuz the safari in the iPhone isnt watered down, it delivers true internet as u’ll see it on a computer, so it will work, im getting one on friday, if it doesnt work for some reason, then maybe u guys can make some type of application to work on the iPhone, or possibly a widget!
June 25th, 2007 at 10:47 am
It would be lovely if you got this excited over the thousands of Palm Treo users you probably already have.
June 25th, 2007 at 10:48 am
OH EM GEE.
i’ll be getting an iPhone on Friday.
and i’m almost sure that meebo will work on it, because it works on ANY website.
:]
June 25th, 2007 at 10:51 am
umm really the iphone isnt gunna be tht great most hand held video gameing systems can do all of the stuff the iphone can except for calling so really its not gonna be worth the money
June 25th, 2007 at 11:02 am
hi whats yore name r you a grail or boy
June 25th, 2007 at 12:08 pm
I’m confused about the sudden interest in the iPhone. It’s been stated several times by forum moderators that there is no interest in developing Meebo for mobile devices. It’s for desktop PC use only, etc. etc.
Meebo doesn’t work on the Wii, DS, Opera Mini for mobile phones, and any other “portable” device, but suddenly Meebo devs want to know if it works on iPhone? Bah!
June 25th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
who cares
June 25th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
yah actually meebo does work on iphone…… its sooo coool can access it anywere and everywere!!!!! amazing! i got an iphone before it came out… actually my dad got it for me through connections with the owner of apple!!
June 25th, 2007 at 1:02 pm
Who cares? The iPhone offers not much more than what other phone manufacturers currently have. I have no interest in ever getting an iPhone. If I need to IM someone guess what? My phone lets me do that. I can IM or txt message from it.
June 25th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
8 Million people have a Wii, with many more to come, the fix is as simple as an ENTER button and you wont do it.
But you start fawning over a yet to be owned by a single person phone?
June 25th, 2007 at 1:40 pm
The short answer: No.
June 25th, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Seems like our friends over at meebo are trying to jump on the iPhone bandwagon and become an “iPhone Application Provider” overnight. Maybe if this happens they can get a 3rd round of financing to put a bandaid on that horrendous burn rate Sigh.
Would this be a bad time to ask how meebo plans to make any money as a result of making its web site iPhone-compliant?
June 25th, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Would this be a bad time to ask how meebo plans to make any money as a result of making its web site iPhone-compliant?
The internet is not about making money, it is about separating venture capitlist from their money, offering IPO’s with no potential revenue source and then getting out with a few million in the bank.

June 25th, 2007 at 5:45 pm
Yes, you can open meebo on iPhone, and it’s awesome, you can enlarge those words so you can read easily, and no lag at all, viva safari.

June 25th, 2007 at 6:52 pm
I don’t have an I-phone. I have a Palm Treo 750 with windows CE, and meebo isn’t working with IE.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:14 pm
Not sure why everyone is so happy about the iPhone, Apple is as sad as Microsoft these days. They lie in their commercials, call things a PC when they mean Windows. My blackberry works great on the web and I don’t see why someone would want to use meebo on their phone. Granted I love meebo but just to jump on when I don’t want to install a messenger app. I’ve paid for trillian and for jivetalk for the blackberry, as keeping a webpage open would use up more battery than an app just for chat. With everything the iPhone is supposed to do I’m sure people will hate the battery life. Save yourself the money and get the clones that will work better and not force you to change all your software to iCrap.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
I emailed meebo about this before this post, They need a test device. Nobody should have one right now except for the testers and I know Apple doesn’t allow people leaking information. Meebo “should” work but they need to simply give it a new interface based on the touch interface and big touchable buttons. Can’t wait until friday and I will report how it goes.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:18 pm
i dont have an iphone but i want one really bad

June 25th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
I see no reason why this was posted in a blog to all meebo users. I could care less about the iphone, and I am sure their are many more.
June 25th, 2007 at 7:47 pm
can you make it work on blazer? the most crippled browser ever for palm os4? =) if you did, it would be quite a feat because theres not a good free instant messaging app out there.
June 25th, 2007 at 9:22 pm
I will hopefully have one too! a mobile-screen friendly meebo would be GREAT!!! I love meebo!
June 25th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
They say that it has support for ajax and web2.0 applications.. that apps like gmail gcalendar and other will work, why not meebo? cause of the javascripts? nah.. i think it’ll play just fine..
if not, you could always make a specific iPhone version for meeboers..!!
June 25th, 2007 at 11:21 pm
i got one cause my dad works for apple he is high up there in the food chain, and just so you know meebo does work
June 25th, 2007 at 11:22 pm
its kinda my dads but i’ve been using it
June 25th, 2007 at 11:37 pm
Your so cute
Well, im not going to buy an iPhone.
Im not a apple fanboy and never will buy anything because it got an half eaten apple on it.
I buy things because of specs. Not because its “in” to have an iPod or iPhone.
June 26th, 2007 at 1:20 am
hi, meebo should work without a prob on the new iphone. basically, it’s supposed to be the same safari on the iphone as on the mac. meebo works awesome on safari mac – and safari windows (beta). i wouldn’t worry too much
mmm half eaten apple… i’m hungry.
June 26th, 2007 at 3:18 am
“….everyone here is wondering, “Does it work with meebo?”” – why don’t you try it now?
I am sure that is why Apple has released Safari for windows. This is not to make every windows user drop IE/Opera/Firefox and use Safari. This to ensure, that you, as a developer of a site that might be of interest to iPhone-users, can modify you solution so that the experience on an iPhone will be swell
/Jacob
June 26th, 2007 at 3:37 am
The Iphone Will most likey work with meebo. Why wuoldnt it if u can get onto the internet the you most likely can use meebo, but like i have said earlier most handheld gamming systems can do almost all of what the Iphone can do most people are gonna buy it beacause of the touch screen my Blackberry does more. So its nothing new to the technoligical world and horribly over priced.
June 26th, 2007 at 4:26 am
I can only provide testing for the PlayStationPortable.
June 26th, 2007 at 4:42 am
I think meebo will be really slow on the iPhone. The gadget won’t have that much memory.
I access meebo through a citrix terminal (Wyse Winterm) and loading a new window is SOoooooooo slow. And Winterm’s running windows 2000 aren’t slow, on a gigabit network (to get to the server where the actual processes are running from) off of a 100mbit internet connection (lots of meebo bandwidth).
That bit has nothing to do with the iPhone i never tried accessing this site from a mobile, my phone has full fledged AIM, the thought never crossed my mind.

Im not to sure about the whlole Iphone concept. Think about this. My phone cant even with stand a charge for a whole day and thats the same with most phones. Now for the Iphone you can listen to music access the web and more. That battery wont last long at all.
June 26th, 2007 at 6:14 am

GINGER COOKIES ! I don’t even believe that anyone here has seen the major focus here. This sweet lady is going to bake us some wonderful ginger cookies. …………Well, there was a prerequisite, but I’m just disappointed I can’t smell them in the kitchen! Unfortunately I can’t go out to my AT&T and get one yet (I got layed offa’ work). Elaine- will you write me when they’re ready?
June 26th, 2007 at 6:45 am
well iphone is like a mini computer and it has safari
i myself use safari version 1.3.2
and the iphone has a more advanced one so if i can use meebo it should also be able to
June 26th, 2007 at 7:13 am
Why do you guys even have these????? It’s really stupid!!!!!!!!!
June 26th, 2007 at 7:49 am
how about getting it to work on any of the smartphones that are already on the market, what happened to your treo love?
June 26th, 2007 at 8:03 am
People who have the logic that just because Safari works on their PC/Mac means that it’s going to work on the iPhone is false pretense. Most web browsers on mobile phones are dumbed down to be able to run smoothly for a mobile CPU. I have an 8525 which has an Internet Exporer web browser, and it does NOT work with meebo (sure wish it did though!) This is most likely because the dumbed down versions of browsers can’t handle AJAX or other complexed web scripting, which should be the same case for iPhone. The only major thing that Apple advertises on their browser is “rich HTML” support, which really means you can open up web pages – plain and simple. If someone gets an iPhone and it works, I’d like to see it. But I still wouldn’t buy one though. Their decision to put EDGE instead of 3G was bad planning in my opinion. I use my phone to browse the web from my laptop, and it closely rivals that of a broadband connection, as well as mobile content downloading very quickly. A 1MB file will take around 2-3 seconds on average.
On another note, I have told all my friends and co-workers to use meebo rather than installing IM clients on their machines, which can hinder performance on systems. I am a big fan of meebo, and if I could have meebo work for Internet Explorer Moblie, I would have it on 24/7/365! Keep up the good work meebo folks!
June 26th, 2007 at 8:04 am
DeAnza is that little road, and you gotta eat at the Outback there… Service is top notch.. (and there is this cute bartender with a new hairdue…. grrrr) hehehehe.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:18 am
why the iphone in particular? there are many mobile phones out there, and the rest of us aren’t getting any preferential treatment.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:36 am
The first thing I’ll do when my store gets the iPhone demos up is test out Meebo.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:38 am
I am still waiting for you to make it compatible with the nintendo wii.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:40 am
BIG E: Google Maps works on the iPhone, which at least *suggests* that they have Ajax-ish capability there, as does the whole bait-and-switch schtick of “we don’t have an SDK, but just write Web 2.0 applications!”
As for why the iPhone in particular, because it’s making a whole lot of noise and that’s going to attract a lot of attention. Welcome to the modern marketing world, Hilla!
I’m considering an iPhone, and I’d sure like some way to do IMs with it. An iPhone-customized version of Meebo would be a swell thing, although I recognize it’ll be some work. (I don’t think the standard version of Meebo will look particularly good on the iPhone even if it does work, but we’ll see.)
June 26th, 2007 at 8:42 am
Will there be mobile friendly version of the page? Although there is full-page browsing, I don’t think it will be great without a bit of modification for smaller screens.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:44 am
What I want to know is whether or not meebo works with the Nintendo DS browser.
Considering there’s no issues with the Wii browser, I’m not to worried…
June 26th, 2007 at 10:57 am
From my recent experience with a touch-screen machine in an airport, I’m going to guess REALLY NOT. Meebo is not real friendly to the touchscreen experience. But, who knows.

June 26th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
forget iPhone… iPods will only rip music into their own format… and why ot focus on a REAL phone like the HTC Excalibur (aka T-Mobile Dash) that will play MP3’s in nearly any format and is a truly functional phone that runs on Windows Mobile 6… why not find a way for meebo to function on a phone that exists and is already VERY popular?
iPhone… too proprietary for me… like its mama the iPod… why fall for the “fad factor” when you can have a truly functional device without being tied to their silly “platform”?
June 26th, 2007 at 2:58 pm
you rock keep up the good work!
June 26th, 2007 at 4:48 pm
meebo sucks
June 26th, 2007 at 4:51 pm

OMG!! CANT WAIT!! HOPE YALL GET TO GET A LIL SNEEK PEEK
June 26th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
I read a review that says it’s not compatible with java and flash, if that matters.
June 26th, 2007 at 8:41 pm
meebo should work on the iphone ,
beacuse the core engine of the Safari Used is the same
So rendering should be almost the same
i asked my friend whos got an iphone to review and he said it has the same user agent as the MAC version so there shouldnt be any problem
but i think the bigger issue is meebo doesnt work with any other mobile browser beacuse of the ajax and even in iphone it would be diffiult to use it with the thumb recogniniton
So why dont you guys work on a java midilet version of the site as their is no other proper IM service available for mobile phones
Gmail has already done the same
Cheers and Keep rocking ,
manu

Maybe you could try IPhoney http://www.marketcircle.com/iphoney/ . It’s a tool which imitates an IPhone on your computer.

Problem Area
I did not how to contact you on what I see as a bug now.
I use a meebo me widget. The problem is whenever someones tries to contact me thru those widgets, they fail to work and get disconnected. And I am given a message, “the message could not be sent”
Even after I logged into two separate windows. from the same machine..
June 27th, 2007 at 7:29 am
To whoever was complaining about Apple’s “closed garden” approach to iPhone software development — I think this may REALLY be because they’re afraid of Voice over IP.
With an unlimited data plan from AT&T on the iPhone, someone could theoretically code a VoIP app for it, allowing unlimited voice usage without counting against any of your minutes. This would screw AT&T out of being able to sell anyone on anything but the cheapest voice plan on iPhones. By restricting development to web-only apps, Apple effectively ensures you can’t add VoIP to the iPhone.

Tom W, that makes sense. I’ve seen some phones with Windows Mobile that were able to have Skype on them, so if you had a data plan, you could just make and receive calls using Skype.
But, I don’t think there would be enough people doing that for them to be losing any money really. People with families, would still need a family plan to cover multiple phones…so AT&T is still getting the monthly bill.
What your saying is the risk of going over the monthly minutes limit is less if someone was using a VoIP service, which is probably true. But not enough people would use it for it to matter. And people already pay the bill with the amount of minutes they do get, so AT&T wouldn’t care too much that one customer isn’t going over the limit.
And I’m sure they didn’t close the development because of that. They wanted to make it secure without a bunch of badly written iPhone apps littering the main screen.
June 27th, 2007 at 11:45 am
Ashok and Tom W, you can run Skype on Windows Mobile Phones, here’s proof: http://www.skype.com/download/skype/mobile/screenshots_wm.html

“if th iphone has safari then meebo will work.”
well, not exactly. If a site uses Flash or Java, then it won’t work. When Jobs said “any site”, he didn’t ay 3rd party plugins, like Flash and Java. I don’t know if Meebo uses either of those, or some other 3rd party plugin..but just Safari compatible doesn’t mean instant success.
June 27th, 2007 at 2:47 pm
[...] we want the real deal!” I think the existence of Meebo makes this a virtual non-issue. Early reports claim that it will work because the iPhone’s browser is reported to be a full version [...]

June 27th, 2007 at 11:48 pm
I’ve tried it, it doesn’t work very well for a number of reasons, but with some tweaking it should work.
Yes, iPhone’s Safari is *essentially* the same as Mac OS X Safari, but not identical. A couple problems:
1) The iPhone has a much slower processor than a standard desktop computer. Sorry, but Meebo is pretty bloated for a JavaScript web app.
2) There are some limits imposed by iPhone’s Safari, which were discussed at WWDC but I cannot talk about here.
3) The user interface is totally different than traditional mouse and keyboard desktop apps. Again, more details from WWDC I can’t discuss.
Regarding Google Maps on the iPhone: it’s a special application that uses the Google Maps API, not the same app located at maps.google.com.

Ummm.. take some of your own advice: JavaScript DOES work on the iPhone with a few caveats (note to dumbasses: NOT “IPHONE”, “Iphone” or any other variant)
Pleeeeeeaaaase Meebo, I have one request. Don’t make it so easy for stupid kids who see the blog posts when they login to Meebo to post comments! You’ll cut down on a ton of the noise if you just took that “comments” link out.

June 29th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Actually, you can converse if someone sends you a message first. I can’t seem to double click a contact to initiate a conversation. Just add a button to the profile page to launch a conversation and you’ll be good.
June 29th, 2007 at 9:57 pm
So it dosen’t quite work, But I think its fixable.
June 30th, 2007 at 12:45 am
The other two have it right, it loads but there is no way to double click on a contact. It would also help greatly to have the windows resized for the iPhone. There really needs to be an IM client for the iphone. Badly. IM as the sidekick’s killer app and while the iPhone has a lot going for it, a good I’m client would do very well methinks.
June 30th, 2007 at 10:23 am
From what I could tell, there was no way to select buddies, and no way to open conversation windows with them.
I tried IMing myself from my PC and it opened a conversation window, but there was no way to actually send the message you type because of a missing send button.
June 30th, 2007 at 10:58 am
A message window can be opened with the new chat button up at the top, but then you have to type in the username that you want to message.
However, I had the same problem with not being able to actually send messages. Put a send button on there and I’ll definitely use it
June 30th, 2007 at 11:14 am
Meebo doesn’t work properly with iphone. You can log into your account but you can not open up chat windows. Your friends list shows up on the right side as with all other IM accounts you have i.e. yahoo im, AIM however you can’t open up a chat window with anyone on your friends list. This was tested using wifi. By the way, WIFI is very zippy and Edge sucks
June 30th, 2007 at 11:44 am
[...] Apple discussions list has someone unable to hit enter and thus send an IM, and the comments on the meebo blog indicate a problem double clicking. It sounds like the meebo people want to make it work [...]
June 30th, 2007 at 3:13 pm
It doesn’t seem to work reliably. I can’t seem to start a chat from the iPhone. But if one is already open (I think if a buddy initiates it,) it works kind of good.
I think if you made a special portal with a tuned Ajax widget, it could work very well.
June 30th, 2007 at 6:02 pm
I’m just going along with everyone else to encourage the meebo team to make it work with the iphone! I have one and i’m looking forward to using meebo with it! Yay for meebo!
Chris
June 30th, 2007 at 6:34 pm
As a new iPhone owner, let me echo the others – get Meebo working on my iPhone, and you’ve got a loyal user right here!
June 30th, 2007 at 7:35 pm
what ya need…
1) a button or link next to a contact name to initiate a chat session window
2) a button or link on an open conversation to actually send a message (as iPhone must not send an actual enter command, only a carriage return)
3) iphone does not recognize mousemove events, so we can’t drag and drop in safari on our lovely devices… therefore you might want to check against our user agent and perhaps arrange our windows kindly
June 30th, 2007 at 9:38 pm
hi, i have an iphone and meebo works fine with one exception, there is no way to send messages, when you click in an area to send enter text, the keyboard popsup, so the return button actualy performs a carriage return, it does not send a message, and do to the lack of a send key built into meebo, there is no way to actually send anything. I have successfully logged in and whatnot obviously however. There was also a problem i noticed with creating a custom away message. I understand that meebo is not responsible for covering instant messaging for the iPhone, but i would love if these minor issues could be resolved, seeing as the iPhone lacks instant messaging, i think you folks at meebo should jump all over the situation and go for the “Meebo is one of the only ways to instant message with the iPhone” route.
So in conclusion i would love to see a send key on the messaging window atleast if the user is using an iPhone and at best all the time. THANK YOU
tristan
June 30th, 2007 at 10:14 pm
It appears as if some people were actually able to find a way to send a message using the iPhone. I can’t figure it out. If anyone has done it please let me know how.
Thanks,
Jonas
July 1st, 2007 at 7:07 am
meebo.com is hostile to iphone because you cannot double click or right click on an iphone. must have single click buttons for initating all chat and other functions. also, ippone can’t mouse drag, so the windows cant be moved or resized. there needs to be a SMALL iphone skin/personality for iphone…. otherwise, iphone users will have to scroll over miles and miles of screen area to get over the 1024 x 10,240 pixel screen that meebo wants to create for chat (which is massive overkill for a chat window… I mean… c’mon)
July 1st, 2007 at 1:33 pm
I’d really just like a send button. I can deal with everything else. I just really want to be able to IM since w/out 10 minute limits…
July 1st, 2007 at 2:20 pm
I think to have proper meebo iphone support, it’ll take a few hours of coding to make it work right.. but it’ll be well worth it!
July 1st, 2007 at 6:47 pm
please please please make meebo work with iPhone. love it but the SMS IM is killing me.
The people above are correct about needing some links for actions done with the mouse and the enter key. Version sized for the smaller screen would be ideal, but i’ll scroll if i have to.
Love your product. Keep up the good work.
July 1st, 2007 at 7:21 pm
The iphone is really cool. And meebo does seem to show up just fine even when using ATT’s slow edge network. All I need is a SEND button. Thats all I need and meebo will work. PLEASE MAKE A SEND BUTTON
July 2nd, 2007 at 6:00 am
Yes a send button, I beg of thee! I would LOVE to use Meebo and it may be our only option at this point. Double clicking a contact or meebo room doesn’t seem to work so an open button on the contacts/meebo rooms and a send button in the chat windows/meebo rooms should make everything work perfectly. Thanks so much for caring about those of us who got our Rev A iPhones! Meebo is the only chat program I use. You guys rock!
July 2nd, 2007 at 8:02 am
I have an iPhone. I was able to open Meebo, open a chat, type a message…
However, as with the other users above, I could not send the message. The return button on the keypad simply starts a new paragraph within the message window.
July 2nd, 2007 at 8:17 am
I can open a window TO chat only if I use the chat button on the buddy list window and manually add the buddy along with the IM client but I can’t click on a buddy and start typing.
July 2nd, 2007 at 9:11 am
yes meebo does not work on the iphone… theres no actual way to select a person and send them a msg. but the page does load.
it would be great if a better interface was made specifically for the iphone. maybe some concept of tabs or panes. the current multi-im box interface may be a little clunky for the smaller screen.
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:11 pm
Another vote for iPhone support – you guys rule!
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:33 pm
Meebo locks up my iPhone resetting it to the main screen
July 2nd, 2007 at 4:09 pm
I’m leaving this comment from my iPhone. It’s fantastic, except for the lack of IM support. If the issues disscussed here were fixed in a separate iPhone page that would be awesome. Thank you already for the great site, I love using it on desktops, I hope soon I will be able to use it really anywhere.
July 2nd, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Actually, I just had a better idea. What if you just checked the user agent to see if whoever that’s trying to log in get’s a slightly diffrent page. Ive done this many a time on sites I’ve made. It’ very easy to do in php and javascript both. Thanks!
July 3rd, 2007 at 10:50 am
I’ve managed to open up a chat window but it crashed.
July 3rd, 2007 at 1:57 pm
I’ve been able to login to meebo. I haven’t tried chatting to anybody initially, I had a chat window from somebody else.
I was able to type messages, and return sent the message appropriately.
The biggest problem I had that after a few messages I was unable to scroll up in the chat window to see previous chat detail.
July 3rd, 2007 at 11:19 pm
Nope. It locks up for me as well. I I trust the Meebo developers to make a iPhone compatible version. =)

http://mashable.com/2007/07/03/meebo-iphone/
July 4th, 2007 at 5:28 pm
I was able to use meebo without problems. Single click on a buddy brings up the chat window with them. To send the message, simply click the “Go” button on the iPhone keyboard. (The text input window is just like any other form, so “Go” submits the text, effectively sending the message).
The interface isn’t perfectly, but you are able to easily scroll back and forth between the Buddy List and the open chats. You cannot move the chat windows around, but they open staggered by default so you can select each one (selecting a window, correctly brings it to the front).
I think the only thing that is needed is a dedicated iPhone interface that makes it even more user friendly.
Hope others get it working on their iPhones in the mean time.
July 4th, 2007 at 11:53 pm
Hi Elain – if you haven’t gotten a hold of the iphone then let me know. I have a friend that spent five our waiting in line last week for one. I will play around to see if I can MEEBO on it.
Hope to catch you again at Santana Row
July 5th, 2007 at 7:08 am
All,
Meebo works just fine on my iPhone. I can Send and Receive IM’s.
I only have one problem… I’m using Jabber.. and there is no sound when sending or receiving messages.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
Jay.
July 5th, 2007 at 9:07 am
it works, not well..but its better then nothing right now..
July 5th, 2007 at 10:48 am
While the meedo site loads it is not possibie to initiate a conversation.
Also if you pop the buddy list out in to its own window – it does not get scroll bars so you can’t scroll down through your list of buddies.
A case of so near and yet so far. Meebo could well work very soon with a few tweaks. Best of luck guys!
July 5th, 2007 at 4:44 pm
Meebo could get a lot of attention by having the first beta IM client customized for the iPhone. Please do it!
July 5th, 2007 at 8:36 pm
barely works with the iPhone interface – it really needs to be tailored to the iPhone screen for us to have a workable chat client. Thanks for looking into it!

July 11th, 2007 at 7:12 am
I tried meebo on the iPhone last night.
Here are the results:
Yes, I can load and log in.
Yes, I can initiate a conversation (on Yahoo at least. It was late at night and none of my AIM contacts were online).
Yes, the JavaScripts appear to run.
NO, I could not drag the conversation window around, because the iPhone’s Safari has no concept of dragging objects inside a Web page.
NO, I could not launch the conversation into a separate Safari window, because iPhone’s Safari blocks popup windows.
Here are some suggestions to alleviate those problems:
1) Make conversation windows tabbed. That would mean rewriting a little javascript to enable that as a preference and allow a chat window to contain multiple chats.
2) enable a preference to allow a tabbed window fill most of the real estate horizontally on the page. This would make meebo work more smoothly with iPhone’s zoom feature (and be useful for non-iPhone users as well).
Seems to me those two simple changes would make Meebo’s interface work smashingly with iPhone.

Meebo not working on my iPhone, I can’t log in. After entering meebo login and submitting I get a strangely formatted page that says “You have signed off. To resume your session, select ‘Reconnect’” and there’s a big orange Reconnect button. ALSO, below that and offset to the right, is a smaller blue Sign On button. Clicking either the Reconnect or Sign On button just makes Safari spin endlessly.
September 21st, 2007 at 10:45 am
Also, the user agent on the iPod touch is slightly different from the iPhone’s and I cant get the iPhone specific page. The new iPod touch user agent is:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A100a Safari/419.3
Just thought you might like to know if you havent worked on it already

I was having problems with Windows Live Messenger connecting through my company’s firewall, and a collegue told me about meebo. Of course, since I love my iPhone except for the lack of iChat, the first thing I did after seen meebo on the pc was to open it on my iPhone. It works great, even over the ATT Edge network when not connected to a WiFi hotspot. Everything is formatted perfectly, and you can even see the other person typing! Thanks SO much, Meebo! ATT and Apple, failure to provide features your customers demand for the sake of profit will lead to things like…. the PC! (didn’t we already learn that lesson?)

SO hapy I can use meebo on my iPhone though. Thanks guys.

Hello! I love the service SO much, and now have an icon for it on my iPhone home screen. : )
But I was wondering if there was any way to hide the offline buddies?
Thanks!
January 16th, 2008 at 11:11 am
Thanx for meebo on iPhone. This is, without a doubt, the best phone I’ve owned and meebo makes it that much closer to being perfect.
The only thing I would ask for, if I could be so bold, is a way to hide offline users. I look at iGoogle for mobile as an example of hiding and displaying information on the iPhone.
Something like that as part of the meebo interface would be fantastic… and then Apple can keep iChat for iPhone… I’d have my IM client of choice.
Thanx again for the work you’ve put into this!

hey man i love your site.. your friend michael told me you were looking for a new way to earn some extra income online.
i own an awesome website where you can make money online..most our users are making like 20-50 bucks a day.. with minimal work.. its pretty simple to do.. its actually so easy to do you won’t believe ill actually pay you to do it.. and its 100% free to sign up and try.
another positive about my site unlike all the other sites.. i will pay you out daily.. so you earn 5 bucks in the first 5 minutes you work on my site.. request a payout and i will pay you out right then.. i guarantee no other sites like mine will pay out daily multiple times..
i’d be glad to help you.. if you sign up..

One thing I don’t like about meebo so far on the itouch is that you are unable to scroll up on your chat with your buddies. Overall, love it but please fix the chat scroll problem.
