We just celebrated our 2nd-year birthday with a little party up in San Francisco. The whole team has been working around the clock so it was nice to get some entertainment (Guitar Hero!) and finger food. It was really great to see so many of the folks who’ve helped us along the way as we’ve built meebo. Now, we promised we’d let you all in on our little birthday surprise, so here it is!
We’re super excited to debut applications inside meebo! Just click on that shiny new rocket ship icon in any IM window and then select which app you want to launch with your buddy. The first type of application we’re showcasing? Drumroll please… Voice and video chat.
So many of you have asked for this feature from day one and now you can video/audio call (TokBox), voice chat (Pudding Media), and group voice call (TalkShoe) on meebo, plus you can even create your own live TV show (UStream) to share with your friends!
Why stop there? There are so many cool applications you can dream up to connect people live! Play games? Go shopping? Watch TV? Find restaurants? They’re all coming soon and we know we can’t possibly code all the neat ideas out there, so we thought, why not open it up to all of you? We’re opening our doors and letting meebo applications be open for anyone to develop! Got an idea? Just visit http://www.meebo.com/platform and you can learn about the meebo platform API, obtain a unique key, and get access to a starter kit to help you build and test your application in meebo.com. JavaScript or Flash, it’s your choice.
When we were all thinking about how to describe our platform, we thought of a great phrase that represents the synchronous and live nature of meebo applications:
“I want to ______ with you.”
I have no idea what you all will come up with, but I bet it’ll be pretty creative! On November 27, we’re hosting another Lunch 2.0 at meebo, followed by an all-day and all-night dev camp for users, interested developers, and potential partners. If you’re far, far away from Mountain View, we’ll offer “virtual office hours” to connect remote developers with the meebo team via video and audio calls. Stay tuned for more details…
As always, we can’t wait to hear your feedback on all of this new stuff! We did our best to squash every bug that came up in the last few weeks, but if you find one (or two, or three), it would be so awesome if you emailed us at comments at meebo dot com or left us a message in the forum. We’ll definitely be working on getting things solid over the next few weeks to get ready for even more fun stuff showing up behind that cool rocket ship.
Can’t wait to hear what you think!
cheers,
sandy

[...] On its second anniversary Meebo rolled out APIs for developers to write applications that leverage its Web-based instant messaging service. For starters, external applications built in Javascript or Flash include TokBox video/audio calling, Pudding Media’s voice chat, and TalkShoe group voice call and live streaming via Ustream. Other applications in the works include games, a restaurant finder, shopping and other activities that can take advantage of buddy lists, according the company blog. [...]

*I* think…and I have already voiced these thoughts in an email to comments@meebo.com…that you guys need to get your basic functionality — ie, interactive text messaging — working and working RIGHT, before you start adding “whiz bang golly gee” features like voice and video. Your system is so defective right now that it DISCOURAGES USE for anything but the most frivoulous of purposes!
In that email, I detailed just a few of the functionality impairments and performance issues which currently make the system unusable for any serious purpose, but got back a ridiculously vague and inexplicit reply, which addressed the detailed points I raised by saying, basically, “Yeah, we know we’ve got problems, and we are working on them”, and nothing else.
The person who replies was yuie@meebo.com. I have already replied to him or her, stating my dissatisfaction with the reply.
RS
PS In my original email I went so far as to offer to HELP with the process of identifiying and correcting problems, but that offer was not even mentioned in the reply.

Sandy,
Since I’m now officially a senior citizen (55) I don’t really cotton to the direct approach of “I want to _____ with you.” So, how about, “May I have this Meebo Tango?” (or whatever you end up calling it).

I don’t have a rocket ship icon, either. Tried logging off and on. Checked both an MSN chat window and my “room” window. Using the latest Firefox and Vista.
October 30th, 2007 at 10:41 am
hey guys, I would just like to say that I love what ya’ll are doing.. great jobs all around.. I use meebo because my msn and aim messengers dont work, and almost prefer it over the originals- I love the idea of a web-based messenger system and ya’ll do a wonderful job..
October 30th, 2007 at 11:06 am
i don’t know if this is the correct place to list these, but thought i’d report the following issues:
1) Messages do not get sent, if you’re singed into an msn account as “invisible”.
2) Work on integrating meebo firefox-addon with “rocket” is required.

October 30th, 2007 at 4:00 pm
I was testing out the new features last night, and I saw the feature, “Group Voice Call” And got rather excited over the fact someone had finally thought up a group voice chat in an IM client. Only to find that it requires a phone, which a number of my friends cannot use/do not have the ability of longdistance. I am hoping that perhaps in the days to come that the Rocket Ship will come to feature a voice conference tool, for us people who want to be able to multi-voice chat with our friends. (Same as group chat?) Also, there was a bit of sound quality problem with the Voice Chat feature, my friend said I sounded like I was echoing, and he sounded very far away. So we switched to the real MSN live messenger, to see if that would fix anything, and we both came in crystal clear.
I adore using Meebo for my MSN friends. And I will be sticking around with the service for as long as I possibly can. Hoping for more features soon, maybe even games we can invite our friends to, as well as play solo? ^^
October 30th, 2007 at 4:02 pm
Hey this is a very great idea! The way how the applications are integrated. Maybe i will make some little apps soon. If I understood right these apps could be used from the non-meebioicians over a webinterface like the meeborooms, right? so keep up the -good- _great_ work!!

Its a great Idea to have applications.. but allot of users who will start webcam or voice will usually not go to the website when you Launch the application.
I thought that when you launch the application it asks to view their webcam via Windows live messenger or yahoo.. but all it does it is link you.. Is what I thought ever going to be possible.. this is one reason why I have not moved to the Mac yet.. as I can not do voice/ Webcam with my Clients.
Please get back to me.

meebo is now lagging more than ever before and i’m really not enjoying it. i have to hit letters a thousand times for them to appear yet every othr instant messagong program works just fine… and i keep getting the pop-ups that say the script is causing my computer to run slow… idk, fix it? or at least make it the way it used to be, that was a little better.

I was excited to see the new applications yesterday and so I tried to do the voice chat. The sidebar and setup opened up just fine but the person I was talking to on the other side said he couldn’t hear anything, even after he did the setup himself. I couldn’t hear him either. Is there something I forgot to do? I looked around at all the buttons but didn’t see anything that said call..And he accepted my call.

Here are a few comments/questions
1] Group Voice Calling: Can people call from anywhere in the world for free?
2] Video Chat: Would be just great if we can have group video chat.
3] Video Chat: The video quality is much better on UStream.

In South Africa there is a service called mxit, that has proved to be very popular, especially amongst teenagers, with a far greater take up than facebook even! Although those stats are becoming less as facebook mobile is the way forward for this market.

I’ve been using Meebo for a while now and find it to be top notch but a few weeks ago I heard on the radio station about this new social network site thats supposed to be like the Walmart of the social network. Everything in one site… It has video chat, radio station, video (like you tube) and much more… The one feature that got my girlfriends attention was the dressing room where you can create outfits on a mannequin with top designer clothes.
